Poll: Obama, McCain Deadlocked In Virginia
The new SurveyUSA poll of Virginia gives John McCain a one-point edge in this state, confirming that this historically red state will be closely contested from now to November.
The numbers: McCain 48%, Obama 47%, with a ±3.9% margin of error. A month and a half ago, SurveyUSA gave Obama an insignificant lead of 49%-47%, and other recent polls have all given either candidate an insignificant lead.
From the internals: Obama attracts 37% of the white vote, five points ahead of John Kerry's showing among white voters here in 2004, when he lost the state by eight points overall.

That poll projects McCain getting 14% of the black vote. That is not even close to being possible.

McCain is not getting 14% of the black vote.

This is not credible, no way McBushSame gets 14% of the black vote...
In any case it simply confirms that Virginia is at play, and senator Obama has some good chances...
I wonder why it is so difficult to find some good polls these days.
And also, the other candidates are not mentioned...I wonder why?

Another interesting pair of numbers is that 47% of McCain supporter's say that they could change their mind, vs. 37% of Obama's.

Their last VA poll in June had McCain getting 25% of the black vote so at least it's an improvement. But yeah, even 14% is too high.
Note one thing - in June, the R/D/I breakdown was 31/43/23. This month, it's 32/37/25. With a 6% loss in Dem party ID this month, it's still a statistical tie. That ain't bad at all.
The youngest demo also dropped between June and today - 26% in June, 21% today. I don't know if that's undercounting the demo but black voters, at 19%, probably are being undercounted.
On the "could change mind question", 47% of McCain supporters answered in the affirmative v. 37% of Obama supporters. (they tied among the "mind made up" voters) Again, Obama holds a significant enthusiasm edge.
Finally, we don't know how they do their likely voter screen. They started with 900 voters, of which a little under 800 were registered. They got that down to 655 LVs. Some of those registered voters will likely be pulling the lever for Obama in the Fall.
This poll is far from bad news for Obama. If he wins the state, it will likely be by 1% or less. That's what most of the polls at this point are showing - a statistical tie.

I think the 14% is an indication that a large percentage of respondents lie just to mess with the polls. The confidence interval on all polls are pure BS because of this. I give surveys what they pay for. If they are willing to give some sort of compensation I make an effort, if they expect me to give them for free the raw material for their reports, then they can expect me not to answer them too seriously.

Virginia is still close. Good news.
I don't buy the 14% of black vote for McCain either.

Of course the 14% black voting for McCain is an outlier
August 11, 2008 2:04 PM | Reply | Permalink
Of course it is, that would be one person in seven. How does it happen, though? Are some of the McCain supporters falsely representing themselves as being black in order to skew the results?

MCCain will easily take Virginia, it was never in play. Finally being vetted by McCain people are starting to see Oilbama as a self-absorbed celebrity who ducks meetings with wounded American troops and wants to raise taxes. His vote for his buddy Dick Cheney's Energy Bill exposes him as in the pocket of Big Oil. And what’s the deal with Oilbama slipping to see his grandmother without his wife and children? The woman who really raised him gets to see him for an hour. She doesn’t see his children, her great-grandchildren, possibly the last time she might be able to see them. And the wife, Mlchelle, is AWOL. What is going on here? If this were any other candidate serious questions would be asked about how he treats his family, especially for a candidate whose campaign is based on the storyline of his extraordinary personal history. Is it Obama himself who doesn’t want his wife and children to see his grandmother, whom he dismissively called a “typical white person”? Or is it Michelle? Does she want nothing to do with the woman who raised her husband? Why does she keep her children away from their great-grandmother? Or does she cooperate with her husband in keeping them away?
Anyway you look at it exposes Oilbama as aboig time scumbag, like his buddy John Edwards.

"MCCain will easily take Virginia, it was never in play."
Thank God that you are in Massachusetts and I'm actually on the ground in Virginia - because now I can speak with absolute confidence when I say that you don't know what the fuck you're talking about.
"Finally being vetted by McCain people are starting to see Oilbama as a self-absorbed celebrity who ducks meetings with wounded American troops and wants to raise taxes."
You know you just steady stay losing when you regurgitate misleading attacks that have already been debunked by media hacks like Andrea Mitchell.
"And what’s the deal with Oilbama slipping to see his grandmother without his wife and children? The woman who really raised him gets to see him for an hour."
What the deal with you getting your inbred marching orders from Noquarters? Larry Johnson is a discredited smear merchant with a hair cut that makes him look like a pedophile version of Moe from "The Three Stooges". You are embarrassing yourself.

You ever notice how the Hillary dead-enders refer to Obama supporters as "cult members" yet they themselves almost always come off as a little bit (or very) loony, appear to believe every wacky conspiracy theory out there, and seem to have invested their lives in the electoral prospects of one woman?

So what do you guys think about McCain getting 14% of the black vote?
August 11, 2008 1:57 PM | Reply | Permalink
So everyone agrees that 14% of the AA vote for McCain is just silly. Afterall, according to the 2004 Exit Polls, W only got 11% of the AA vote.
But how do we know that the white vote numbers aren't also off?
Moreover, what about the likelihood that there are a number of racist whites who refuse to cooperate with any polling?
In the end, all we know is that VA has the potential to be a huge pick up for the Democrats and that McCain will have to spend resources here to keep the Commonwealth Red. By itself, that is good news.

Lots of crosstab fun in this one.
-McCain is not getting 14% of the A-A vote in Virginia. By comparison, Bush got 12% in 2000.
-Women are underrepresented. They were 54% in 2004, and just 51% here.
-Blacks are underrepresented. 21% in 2004, 19% here. It seems unlikely to me that their turnout (even relative) drops this election.
-The youth vote dropped 5% since the last time the state was polled. 26% to 21%.
There's another key element here- only 1% of men are listed as undecided, compared to 3% of women. Let's guess which way they'll break, considering how many people don't know McCain's strong pro-life record...

This is a good news for Obama. Virginia might go blue come November, especially, with the mention of another war with Russia. McCain will have to spend all his money in other to fend off Obama.
Again, this poll doesn't take into consideration the newly registered voters. This is a really good news.
Perosnally, i am tired of War and i have heard enough of war.

Yeah, I'd like to hear Obama start hammering McCain on his Russia response. When McCain goes for the typical "appeaser" response, Obama should ask the American people if they feel it's prudent to start threatening war with a nation that still possesses a few thousand nukes.

I reckon that will give him a few points. Then again, a war with Russia might bring the apocalypse so many religious nutjobs have been hoping for...

I am not sure any supporter of McCain would want to push the Edwards/Obama "family-values" angle too hard.
After all, McCain is an admitted cheater, who at age 40 dumped his crippled wife (who stood by him while he was a POW)and the mother of his children for a 24 year old beer heiress.
That whole thing about glass houses...

bottom line is virginia will be close.. Obama doesn't have to win VA to win the election but mccain DOES.
obama doesn't even have to win OH.
he can win with IA, NM, and CO which he is favored to win!
it would take a monumental collapse for him to not win all Kerry states

Still, it could be better if OH and VA turn blue.

I believe Obama is polling around 90%-95% A-A support in VA. Obama needs about 37% of white support and 90-95% Black support, plus the growing latino vote in VA, he can pull of a win.
August 11, 2008 2:33 PM | Reply | Permalink
It's not an outlier for Survey USA in Virginia.
Their last poll of the state (in late June) had McCain getting 24% of the A-A vote with A-A's being 18% of the projection.

I am not surprised no one has mentioned the imminent announcement of Mark Warner as Obama's VP and how that will affect the race in Virginia.
Another hint was dropped by Senator Sebelius today. The VP's address is entitled, "Securing America's Future". That's Mark Warner speak right there.
Should I put up a link to my seminal posting, "Obama's VP: Out of Sight, Out of Mind and Outrageously Obvious" and recount the numerous hints of recent weeks or are folks completely bored by my repeated assertions on this.

I don't even believe 14% of AAs with land lines who are already registered and fit the likely voter criteria. If you consider the fact that Obama has a massive organization working 24/7 to register and motivate new black voters, and roll in the fact that the 14% has got to be an extreme outlier, VA is looking good.
