Pelosi: Senate Dems Won't Need Lieberman After The Election
We now have a high-ranking Democrat openly saying Joe Lieberman should pay for his betrayal of the party once this election is over.
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Nancy Pelosi was asked about the Lieberman problem, in light of his recent comments implying that Barack Obama doesn't "put the country first."
"The Democrats in the Senate are in a tough spot. They have 51 votes. Joe Lieberman organizes with them," said Pelosi. "In 85 days or something, they will have five more Democrats -- they won't need him to make the majority. And it will be interesting to see what the leadership in the Senate, the Democratic leadership in the Senate, does at that point in terms of Joe Lieberman's chairmanship of his committee."

wowsers.
it's about time someone says SOMETHING about lieberman
it's good that speaker pelosi did, because reid is in too tough of a position to be able to say anything

Only 5 more Democratic Senators?
Can we please set our sights a little higher than that, Speaker Pelosi and other top Dems?
Presumably this has Dems winning NM, CO, VA, NH, AK, but we should be fighting like heck for Maine, Oregon, Minnesota, Maine, Mississippi, and North Carolina as well. Filibuster-proof majority has got to be our goal. How often do you even have a fighting chance of getting there?

This does not matter.
To Joe, after the election he wont need the Democrats.
The only thing he may care about (but I doubt it) would be removing him now.

Well said.
Don't wait.
Lieberman is dangerous now since he can pretend to be a Democrat. Call his bluff. Kick the a--hole out.
The GOP will wlecome him until they realize they disagree on social policy with him, and the fanatical rightwing won't tolerate that. Poor lil Joe will have no home.
August 13, 2008 7:00 PM | Reply | Permalink
That would be true if Joe were trying to fit in with the fanatical "social-issues" republicans. Those guys don't even like McCain much.
Lieberman has adopted the neocon viewpoint, so he will fit right in. I predict he would be either Secretary of Defense, or Secretary of State in a McCain administration. I hope I am never proved right or wrong.

This is such a wimpy threat. Lieberman knows he has no future after the election unless McCain wins, which is why he will do everything to defeat Obama.

would it be naive to say that in stating such a political reality, that it somewhat diminishes joe lieberman's role as a "bipartisan legislator" in the eyes of the general public?

Lieberman knows his political career is over if Obama wins the White House, which is why he's in so deep with the McCain Camp. He'll probably get to pick his cabinet post should McCain win, if Obama wins, he'll be marginalized to the point where the one high ranking Senator will be left with nothing. And then in four years time he loses his seat to Lamont in Connecticut.
August 13, 2008 6:47 PM | Reply | Permalink
The only thing I would add is that, rather than going down to defeat in an election against Lamont, Lieberman simply won't run, opting instead for "the opportunity" to spend more time with his family. Cowardly little so & so, that one.

They should not wait. Kick him out now. Before he uses his role as a "Democrat" to attack Obama at the RNC convention.

I've heard conflicting reports about whether or not the Senate would have to reorganize if Joe LieberSchmuck quit their caucus.
Anybody know for sure? That fact has to be central to any opinion about whether the Dems should do something about Holy Joe now.
August 13, 2008 7:05 PM | Reply | Permalink
They wouldn't have to reorganize if they stripped his chairmanship right now. The current agreement is in place and a new one will take its place in 1/09.

The Democrats have no self-respect. They should have kicked him out months ago. It's not like they needed his help to cave on FISA, war funding, etc.

You gotta admit though, he's got resolve.

They never needed him. They should have offered Olympia Snowe anything she wanted to flip to Independent. Instead Harry Reid and the rest of Club Stupid gave Joe Lieberman a standing ovation when he returned to the Senate -- after having pissed all over Connecticut Democrats.
Big, big suprise that he's pissing all over national Democrats now. NOT.

I think Pelosi's comment is a result of the heat she is getting from the base for her non performance, or at least the perception of it.
Lieberman knows his Senate career is over when his current term ends, he's looking for future employment.

Pelosi wants to talk tough now? i wonder if Cindy Sheann's garnering of enough signatures placing her on the ballot against Pelosi in San Fran has anything to do with Nancy's new found toughness?

Nope. Sheehan's only chance would have been to run against Pelosi in the Dem primary. Instead, she chose to run in the GE. That dropped her chances from slim to none.

Maybe Obama can find a nice diplomatic post for Joe once he is out of the Dem Caucus - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Democratic and Popular Republic of Algeria

Let's not be too rash trying to push Joe out of the Democratic Senate set-up just yet -- unless you want to see Congress come back and have the Senate confirm all of Bush's super-neo-con Judges for instance -- something Reid can prevent so long as he holds the leadership. As things stand now, Reid isn't going to confirm any of them, leaving the way open for a hoped for Obama administration to nominate decent judges. Reid is not going to allow a recess so that Bush can do recess appointments. Push out Lieberman, and this is what you would get. Wait till next year and between 55 and 60 Democrats in the Senate, and Joe has no leverage.

I used to think that Lieberman had a right to support McCain, even if he was still effectively a sitting Democrat. We all claim we want politicians who are honest with their intentions and beliefs, so it doesn't make sense, then, to fault the guy for going with his gut. I may not have liked what he was doing, but in some ways, the fact that he was fighting for his views was respectable.
But now I think he's an asshole. He's doing little more than smearing his pal's opponent. Contrast that to, say, Chuck Hagel. He has expressed his reservations about McCain's policies on national security, but he hasn't gone after his colleague in a reckless, pathetic manner.

All this after Joe pleaded with Obama to come to CT and support him while Ned Lamont was running against him io the DEM primary. Here is what Obama had to say in support of Joe.
...I know that some in the party have differences with Joe," Senator Obama said, all but silencing the crowd. "I'm going to go ahead and say it. It's the elephant in the room. And Joe and I don't agree on everything. But what I know is, Joe Lieberman's a man with a good heart, with a keen intellect, who cares about the working families of America."
Then, with applause beginning to build, he finished the thought: "I am absolutely certain that Connecticut's going to have the good sense to send Joe Lieberman back to the United States Senate." That time, people cheered loudly....

The notion that we need Lieberman to keep our all important majority in the Senate just shows more party cowardice. What has our Senate majority produced so far? What will Reid and Pelosi say after McCain wins the presidency with key help from Lieberman?
I've been fighting off the conclusion that the Democratic party will continue to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory until most of the party incumbents are OUT. We, as voters, need to stop threatening consequences that falls on deaf ears. We must SHOW them we are serious by voting these incumbents out.

Joe "ZELL" Lieberman. WHAT NEXT from this tool..er...uh...I mean fool.
What has John McCain promised Joe "ZELL" Lieberman, if he happens to become President? Attacking Iran, more economic or military aid to Israel at the expense of The Middle Class in America, the VP slot, or God forbid, Secretary of Defense in a McCain administration? God only knows.
As far as "Zell" Lieberman is concerned we can only hope that the senate ends up with 61 DEMOCRATS after this election, maybe then he will be able to be ignored and relieved of ALL committee responsibility. Because, it seems to me that he's spending a lot more time backing up McCain and correcting McCain mistakes, than he is being a Senator, and unless I missed something he's not running for President.
As a matter of fact, I make a motion that henceforth he be referred to as "ZELL LIEBERMAN", and even that might be too generous. He has turned his back on his country (USA?), his party and the people of the American Middle Class.

lieberman is a true patriot. of israel. he has endangered his own political career to uphold his inner beliefs. the belief that israel should be encouraged to persecute palestinians. the belief that the united states should join israel as an occupier of arab land. barack obama makes lieberman and militant zionists nervous. he spoke against the war in iraq. he proposes a timetable for departure. he has a muslim name. he has/had an angry pastor who questions americam militarism. john mccain on the other hand seems intent on matching still president bush's bellicosity. lieberman an israeli patriot is true to his convictions.

zell miller has no convictions other than his reelection. remember he was appointed to his first term. in 2004 he read the polls in the confedracy and said "me rather be a republican now". lieberman is different. he has risked everything to satisfy his personal racist hatred of arabs and persians. he did not choose to leave the party. he was kicked out. he will very likely lose his senate seat in time. i am sure he will do fine as an apac lobbyist.
