Obama Camp Unveils "Buy American, Vote Obama" Campaign

The Obama camp is pushing a new theme in Pennsylvania tomorrow -- it's called the "Buy American, Vote Obama" campaign.

Here's the new logo, to be unveiled tomorrow and to appear on stickers and flyers in select towns around the state:

According to an Obama aide, the new effort dovetails with a renewed push by the Obama team in Pennsylvania to poke fun at John McCain's recent claim that he would rather hear the roar of "50,000 Harleys" than the cheering of 200,000 Berliners.

As the Obama camp was quick to point out, McCain opposed legislation that would have forced the U.S. government to buy American-made motorcycles.

The Obama camp's push on the issue includes running this recent ad, which was running in the York market and mocks McCain's Harley quote while pointing out McCain's position on American-made bikes, in two new markets in Pennsylvania beginning tomorrow -- the Pittsburgh and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre markets.

Obama's Pennsylvania campaign, the aide says, will be hitting the ground this weekend in around five towns around the state with stickers and flyers bearing the above "Buy American, Vote Obama" logo.

The events will feature a few dozen actual Harley riders for Obama that have been recruited for the weekend's events.

"Harley riders aren't typically supportive of Democratic candidates," the aide says. "But we're making a play for them by saying that Obama's economic policies are the true patriotic ones."

If "Buy American, Vote Obama" catches on, it could conceivably be unveiled in other battlegrounds.

It's yet another sign of the Obama camp's efforts to turn the attacks on his patriotism on their head by arguing that McCain is the one who's anti-American-worker. Such arguments have had mixed success, but with the economy topping the list of voter concerns, it's possible that they will land on fertile ground in the struggling industrial battleground states.

i'm torn with that logo. he should look to put an american flag on there somewhere.

this seems a little bit separatist to me, but whatever.

HEY
McCain Ad Response 2 Obama’s DHL Ad

noun + verb + "celebrity"

I think this logo is suppose to resemble the Harley logo

user-pic

It looks like all those Depression and WWII agency logo's to me.

I just think the idea of buying only American is a bit weird. We are a global economy, I like foreign cars, I like the "idea" of free trade. I dont think Obama should be pushing as American only agenda, don't want to start trade wars with other countries.

I don't get it...

Let me explain this to you. McCain has been questioning Obama's patriotism, and his "American" nature in the "Country First" ads.

Obama is seeking to undercut that by painting McCain as someone who cares more about foreign interests than about Americans by voting to move American jobs overseas, and having lobbyists on his team that work for brutal dictators and foreign nations.

Can I get it as a sticker?

Do you know what an American Flyer is? The logo is a play on that "little red wagon that could" theme. True Americana. The logo also resembles the sweeping wings of freedom that many biker rider embrace. Take a look at some old nostalgic motorbikes... like indians, etc.

That is the best I can do, but I do feel the effect of what the logo is trying to portray. It takes you back to a simpler time when you can just "go" on your bike.

I do!!...I remember those little wooden airplanes that came in different cereal boxes! We also had PF Flyer sneakers..they were the RAGE.

Oh, I love the logo. And drive a vintage motorcycle myself and totally get that part. But beyond a cool new logo, I'm not entirely sure of the effectiveness of the message.

I like this---it's a very good tack to take.

I like it too.

I think that it should run in Wisconsin as well where they make Harleys!

We need to win Wisconsin

Obama will win Wisconsin. Count on it.

Wisconsin Policy Research Institute
"Senator Barack Obama holds a 44% to 38% lead in Wisconsin over Senator John McCain in the presidential race. Senator Obama leads the race primarily because of a combination of the most important issues on the minds of voters and the impact of President Bush and the voter’s view about the direction of the country. The two issues that voters felt personally were most important to them were the economy and creating jobs (24%), and dealing with the war in Iraq (12%). On these issues Senator Obama had large leads. On the economy, Obama led Senator McCain by a 62% to 20% margin. On dealing with the war in Iraq his lead was 66% to 22%. Another issue that was frequently mentioned was improving education, where Senator Obama’s lead was 73% to 10%."

Alrighty now!!

I just don't get why OH is not as responsive as WI..but then OH is nothing but KY and W.VA south of Cincinatti and to the East..guess that's why.
But the economics of both are similiar.

user-pic

apologies, comments were disabled for a sec.

Yeah, an American flag would help, but the slogan is great.

user-pic

The BigO logo is a stylized American flag.

I like the logo a lot--very reminiscent of '50s and '60s-era designs (you know, when American industry was king), which is probably what they were going for. Though Obama's name is easy to miss.

It somewhat looks like American Eagle too...like the wings on the Harley imitate, as well.

at first it looked a bit like the mini cooper logo to me

user-pic

Wow, that logo is very, erm, 'goatse-esque'. Like really, a lot.

Other then the logo, I'm not sure if it makes too much sense. I mean, I know McCain is from Panama, but frankly I'm not sure if it makes that much sense for the government to only purchase stuff made in the U.S.

And obviously, swing voters will make the goatse connection.

I think it's more about urging consumers to buy buy more American products. The Government, I think, comes in with investing more in American consumer infrastructure. Though I could be wrong... And I definitely feel like I'm over-complicating things...

Yeah, that's how I originally read it. I was like, "well, John McCain is an American too."

If he's targeting the idea that McCain favors sending jobs overseas and not buying American-made motorcycles, then I think that's a lot to convey in a logo.

The ambiguity can serve a purpose too, though. The visual connects "Barack Obama" and "American," ostensibly in the context of this specific issue. Suggestive but not defensive.

user-pic

I like it. Smack him around, damn the consequences.

http://strategy08.wordpress.com

Yeah, that logo, even with all the explanation, still confuses the hell out of me. I guess if PA voters get it, it doesn't matter if it makes sense to us.

Don't know why, but it kind of reminds me of the old Civil Defense logo.

Hm. I dunno. I'm skeptical of how well this will do. I'd like to give out-and-out praise to it, and I'm glad he's making a play in this way, but I don't know how successful it will be. We'll have to wait and see.

Still, I love the logo. It really jumps out at you. I hope it catches on, especially with the rising concern of bad Chinese products.

the message being to vote for obama is to buy an american. frames his patriotism in face of "world celebrity, he's from Indonesia" stuff. not bad.

*scratches head* yeah.. i dunno about this one. and the logo looks like those little pins that Delta Airlines used to hand out.

yeah now that i think about it, it does

Sounds and looks interesting.

A take on the GOP's "Uber-americanism".

At least, this guys are first on originality.

This is clearly a sign that they're going to hit the McCains hard on the InBev deal.

I get it, but it's a little hokey! Reminds me of the Commander and Chief logo they came up with a while back. Although, I wouldn't mind having a sticker of both of them. Guess I'll make one!

I'm sure you'll be able to get this as a sticker, assuming it doesn't blow up in their face like the seal.

That'll work. Hit McCain where it hurts.

The Obamas sure as hell better drive American-made vehicles.

Ugh, seriously...

Barack drives a Chrysler 300C.

Scratch that, he sold his 300C and got a Ford Escape Hybrid. What a communist.

I bet he likes smelling his farts. Frickin' elitists.

I don't think he drives anything at this point. Secret Service does the driving and you can be rest assured that they push American steel.

user-pic

The first thing I thought of is that it looks like a compact disc.

Lunch bucket/Union towns will eat this up. It could make an effective bumper sticker in states like Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania etc.

Just like McCain's "Country First" it implies the negative, in this case McCain doesn't support buying American. Of course this campaign will be backed up with ads targeting McCain outsourcing American jobs.

I don't know how this all fits in with his "One World" European tour though.

user-pic

The Obamas do drive American-made vehicles.

I like the idea.

What does American made mean anymore? Ford owns Jaguar and Volvo..Chrysler is owned by Daimler-Benz and who is GM in bed with?

Two quick responses:

1) I like it.

2) If BSLev is reading this thread, does this help to allay your concerns about Obama's commitment to Labor?

I haven't been following this aforementioned commenter's concerns(trolling), but Obama was a co-sponsor of the EFCA. I don't know how much more pro-worker, pro-labor you can get.

Goodness, I would never call BSLev a troll. He had elsewhere expressed concern that Sen Obama's support for the EFCA would be merely perfunctory, not enthusiastic if such support came at a political cost. I am no more privy to Sen Obama's thoughts than anyone else here, but this sort of campaign slant at least counts (to my mind at any rate) as making the right sort of noises. It is reminiscent of Speaker Gephardt (at least I think) and we could not ask for more than another Gephardt.

user-pic

Wow, well this is a first. I've never been called a troll by someone who admits to not having even read what I wrote! :)

I'm delighted that Senator Obama is one of the 47 Senate co-sponsors of EFCA tennisball. I continue to be concerned that initiatives such as EFCA are not a priority for the coalition that launched Senator Obama to victory over Senator Clinton. We had an interesting discussion about that on here the other day, and I don't think I was accused of trolling! In any event, if you are interested in EFCA, go to NYSBA.org, register for the NYS Bar Labor Law Section's fall conference in Cooperstown, New York to be held the weekend of September 19, and sign up to hear me present the union side of the EFCA debate to my fellow members of the Bar. You can even point out that Senator Obama is a co-sponsor of the legislation, and I'll yield the floor to you for as long as you like, but you'll have to go by a name other than tennisball. :) Peace.

Sorry! I don't comment much here, so many apologizes!

I follow EFCA issues closely, and the smear campaign right now is a little concerning for down ticket close races.

user-pic

No need to be sorry friend. Have a good one.

user-pic

I am absolutely delighted with this Buy American campaign Greg. I think this, more than anything I've seen, is how Senator Obama wins the election. This is a theme he should be hammering from now until November.

I am glad he is hitting him where it hurt. The Republican Party are anti-American. They've outsource all our jobs to China. I am glad Obama is hitting him pretty hard

Yes!

Obama needs to outAMERICAN McCain.

if this is about who is more America than let the America the beautiful games and O Beautiful for spacious skies begin...

Obama should put Ray Charles America the Beautiful in rotation for all events.

He should pass out all types of Americana trinkets and let folks like Coca-Cola, and Schwinn and ModelT's in the shape of the Obama emblem for the crowds to wave.

Out do McCain on being American!
Standing up for America.
Keeping jobs in America.
This is OUR country and OUR moment...let's take it back from the oil barons and lobbyists that McCain is a sperm receptacle for.

Good thing most of you naysayers aren't advising this campaign. This is an incredibly smart tactic to work on the white, lower-middle income moderate union vote. There is certainly a nationalistic undertone, which Dems have avoided like the plague, but the Obama campaign can hit McCain hard and fast with it, tying him to shipping jobs overseas and giving huge tax breaks to the wealthy corporations that do it.

It's certainly not considered the highroad, but they're playing on a sentiment that Republicans have won in every election. Dems finally needed to address it.

This will play well among low information voters...Obama should continue to hit him hard.

"Buy Georgian or any other country that will pay us, Vote McCain"

"Harley riders aren't typically supportive of Democratic candidates," the aide says...

Yeah, they're disproportionally macho @SSholes. Which is why I ride a big '73 Honda.

'74 Honda here.

Got my eye on an old Bonnie, though.

And I'm born and raised in Milwaukee (and currently live and work here). I can't stand Harleys.

The message is about the fact that McBushSame supports foreign interest: Remember the tank deal for the military, then you have the DHL deal, and now you have the Harley...

So any strategy linking McBushSame to anti-american deal is good strategy...

Very retro and all-American. He needs his name bigger. Buy American! Vote Obama! Yes We Can!

It's a plus for Obama if the political discourse turns to jobs because McCain really just offers the trickle down economics that put us in the mess.

It's a plus for Obama if the political discourse turns to jobs because McCain really just offers the trickle down economics that put us in the mess.

user-pic

"Middle Class First" and "Buy American, vote Obama!"

Great slogans that Obama can expand on in which he will be the champion of the middle class and that he will give tax breaks to American companies who keep jobs in the United States.

Obama should claim "America First" as a slogan, one-upping McCain's "Country First". Hell go a step further and make McCain's slogan a question - "McCain: Which Country First?".

Excuse me while I clean the coffee off my keyboard.

If you were to take a poll of names that sound American my guess is Obama or Soetoro comes out at or near the bottom. Probably wouldn't even be on the list.

Buy Irish, vote Goldstein
Buy French, vote Sakimoto
Buy Chinese, vote Gonzalez.
Buy American, vote Obama.

Bwahahaha. This is the most tone deaf slogan I could imagine.

Well hello there. Come here often?

All of those names and backgrounds make up the population of the United States, of course.

Obama is a perfect name for a US citizen, and it will become THE representative name in November.

I like it, they need to add some American flags though on either side, and better yet -- does this mean some NATIONAL "Buy American" ads are on the way?

Aww-man I hope so! As many American and Barack Obama ads as possible -- I'm thinking that must be the next series of Olympic ads.

Hit McSame where it hurts, and force him to explain free-trade to the low-information voter. That is a real hard sell.

Good luck to Obama-Soetoro in trying to convince undecideds that he's more American, more pro-American than John McCain.

Interesting that Obama's name is so tiny. Design focus group no doubt. It's almost the size of a boilerplate disclaimer.

That is interesting. You like to Party?

How cute. Take a number and get in line.

Yeah, numbers, math - awesome. I like to party, too. I'm no Fred Flintstone, but I can make your Bedrock if you know what i'm sayin'.

Just to be sure, I'm taking Budweiser, which is now Belgian off my shopping list.

Obama has to keep this a localized campaign, as it will not play nearly as well outside of the rust belt.

Kind of reminds me of the Harley logo,Maybe a little too much.Hope there isn't a frivolous lawsuit around the corner for the Obama campaign. But that's just me.

user-pic

I don't think Obama's name is printed large enough in the design to be seen. I can see "Buy American" but I can hardly see Barack Obama. I'd like to see "Obama" the same size font as Buy American.

It...looks like an old 45 rpm record label.

Obama's back from vacation. Here's to the end of the free ride McCain has been enjoying the last week.

I'd like to see Obama's campaign reacting within the hour to each new commercial or wacky statement; and I also want the Obama crew to originate some of the campaign dialog instead of waiting for McCain's crew to continue their inventions unabated.

Obviously this is just playing to low information voters, but still...

One of the things that always annoyed me while in the Coast Guard was that we could not buy the best equipment, instead we always had to buy from a US company.

user-pic

Can someone please explain how Obama reconciles his rightful contempt for ignorant, English-only, xenophobic Americans with his own nationalist, protectionist, Buy American rhetoric, that is, admittedly, disingenuous, and equally loathsome.

This message that plays to the fears of those clinging to their guns and religion is reinforced by the use a Depression-era union logo like the one below:

http://www.gasolinealleyantiques.com/images/Historical%20Page/radio1.JPG

Great logo, in my opinion.

I agree that the design itself is a stylized American flag. All red, white and blue. It doesn't need to be that blatant to get the point across. The classic feel of it really touches on American sentimentality about the "good old days" when gas was affordable and everyone drove a Chevy. Perfect for the targeted demographic.

I also think it's good that his name is so small. It's a subtle a way to fight back allegations of self-righteousness that have been floating around. It makes the message more about America and less about Obama. It also makes the overall statement more ambiguous, allowing voters to decide on the message. It can be read as "Obama is American, buy him" (which sort of implies that McCain isn't American), "Buy American products AND vote for Obama," or what was probably intended, "Obama supports American products and jobs, vote for him." Great use of messaging in design.

Trouble is
Buying American
Means NOT BUYING
Hussein...
On one hand we have a
CryptoIslamoTerrorist
Married to an America Hating Harpy
And on the other hand we have an honest to god
American Hero married to a beer heiress...
Only ObaBots think
Community Organizer equals
Hanoi Hilton survivor.

But hey, you suck ObaAss
and you're gonna choke on ObaShit.

It's about time that 'Buy American' came back into our minds. We are WAY out of balance. It's not in the least bit separatist... it's taking care of ourselves, and keeping our money here when we need it, supporing American companies that provide jobs to Americans.

Bravo Obama!

The logo is nice--it doesn't need any more blatant American flag qualities beyond red/white/blue. It certainly is nostalgic, reminiscent of logos of well-known American companies and 45 rpm records.

As to "buying American", Obama was born in Hawaii--then as now a United State of America--not some exotic port-of-call like Panama, no matter what Cokie Roberts may say.

I'm sorry, but I think the logo is a dumb idea. I thought we were done with logos after the presidential seal flap.

Not only that, but this is all in answer to something McCain said. Obama needs to get ahead of the curve and command the news cycle again. I can see the headline: "Obama unveils new logo." And McCain's response: "Logos don't create jobs."

I've printed off my own, which will go on the rear bumper of my US (and Canada) made '99 Ford Escort.

I do understand Glimmung's concerns about problems with the "Buy America" act, which have a lot of validity. However, it's not America's workers who choose to promote poor quality, obsolete designs, and off-shoring, but America's CEOs and their underlings.

If Americans don't buy American, then sooner or later we CAN'T buy American, and to a large extent, that has already happened. And if we won't buy American, why should anyone else?

Believe me (and if you knew my career you would), this is not xenophobia on my part.

This guy claims to be black but is it not true that he is half white (mother)and the other half a black muslim (male) that left his white mother.

If he was brought up in a typical white background, when did he become black and was mentored by whom? The reverend and other radicals. Time to wake up before we give the country away. Just an opinion with many questions.

I really do encourage you to read Dreams of My Father. It will give you so much insight into this man. He has such a consistent, self-aware frame of mind that you will see reflected in his approach to politics. I really think it will answer alot of your questions... or at least give you a more honest starting place about where he's coming from.

Plus it's a great read.

I could not be happier about this new direction in senator Obama's campaign. I was quite chagrined that neither candidate nor our "president" mentioned one word about buying American products as part of an American economic stimulus package. It is not protectionist or xenophobic to suggest that Americans buy their countrymen's wares in an effort to save an economy that appears to be fast approaching a tipping point from which there will be no return.

Sam Walton, originally made his money by offering mostly American products at a discount. That was a different era, when phrases like made in Japan generally meant poor quality. If there was a retail department store that sold nothing but American products I would gladly do most of my shopping there. I hardly think that I am alone in that respect. I make an effort to to buy American products whenever possible. Once upon a time we had a choice between buying a pack of American-made T-shirts for five dollars, or imported T-shirts of a similar quality for $3.50. This option is no longer available to us. I'm not sure of the reason, but I assume the retailer made more money on the lower-priced article than the more expensive, American-made product. Wal-Mart was instrumental in forcing Rubbermaid out of business in Ohio. Not because they couldn't make a profit but because they couldn't make a large enough profit for Sam Walton's greedy progeny.

I'm not saying that we should restrict foreign imports. But there is no reason not to use the bully pulpit of the presidency, or candidacy for that matter, to promote American products. How can we ever expect to export products to other countries when we won't even promote them in our own?

We have a national dairy month. We have a national Black history month. We probably have a national left-handed redhaired stepchild month. All designed to raise awareness of a product or a problem; why don't we now Institute a national buy American products month. Our trade deficit hurts our national economy. Shouldn't an economic stimulus package, stimulate our economy, not China's.

How many manufacturing jobs do you suppose, left the United States of America so that the Waltons could trade in Sam's old pickup truck (American-made) for their fleet of luxury vehicles.

A new definition of American-made is no doubt necessary. I naïvely purchased a lot of clothing from the Marianas thinking that I was putting Americans to work. If "Made in America" was not an important imprimatur, Jack Abramoff and company would not have spent so much money and political capital to hoodwink so many Americans.

Barack Obama should do everything possible to attach his name to an American campaign of putting Americans to work by Americans buying American. You can't say American enough times when fighting the party that has already usurped the word patriot (even though it is a complete misnomer when referring to the Republican Party).

Sure;

quote: "I ceased to advertize my mother's race when I was 12 or 13 when I began to suspect that by doing so I was ingratiating myself to whites"

"Ifound a solace in nursing a pervasive sense of grievanance and animosity against my mother's race"

"I will stand with the Muslims should the political winds shift in an ugly direction"

don't understand what's up with the two camps - Republicans and Democrats?

get the feeling like you are completely lost?

McCain moving in on democratic turf...Obama moving in on Republican turf?

It's done on purpose. Where right and wrong use to be a clear choice for the people of America depending on whose side you're on. Today you just don't know.

It's called mind control.

In today's world 3 things make or break decisions and actions of a nation, indeed nations.

Those in power, money, and the mass.

Those in power decide to do something with all that money they've got...and the mass allows them or not allow them -- depending on the information they get from - the media (bought by those in power).

Think of it - 1% of the American population holds more than 30% of the nations wealth - today probably alot more with every single American pumped for all he's go via his gas tank.

Believe me, the chaos and misery is intentionally caused....they are preparing the grounds for something much bigger to come - and with a little button pushing from the media, the American people will do exactly as expected of them - just like what they did for the invasion of Iraq.

RE: "Buy American". Keep a few points in mind.

First: Harley Davidson is NOT "American made". Go to your local Harley dealer and search all over the bike for the "Made in America" sticker.
I'll save you the time; It's not there. You'll find one on the old Honda Valkyrie (since discontinued).
The reason is that to have that sticker, a product must be 87% American products: Harleys are 84% American made, the rest comes from Mexico, et al.

Second Point: The "Wanna be's" that attend Sturgis are mostly, well, "wanna be's"; Week days they're just normal people ( doctors, lawyers, accountants, etc), on week ends they "dress-up" and play "Biker". Quite a few bring their "trailer queen" bikes in on trailers (or, even "air ship" them in) The "real Biker" (the 1%ers) generally don't vote and could care less who the President is.

Sorry for the "rant", but "back in the day" I was a "biker" (when Harley was American made"). Now days a Harley Davidson is just an expensive toy for "rich kids"; sub-standard quality at that!

The Sturgis crowd is going to vote Republican anyway
