Obama Himself Unleashes Broad Populist Attack On McCain
John McCain's number-of-houses gaffe may well be remembered as an important turning point in the campaign. It's a moment Dems have been waiting for that is serving as a catalyst for a much more intense and unified populist attack on McCain coming from many corners, particularly Barack Obama himself.
On the trail today, Obama unleashed a fusillade of populist criticism of McCain, weaving together a number of different recent gaffes or quotes from McCain or his surrogates:
Among the various points hit on by Obama: McCain's claim awhile back that we've made great economic progress; McCain's (possibly tongue-in-cheek) claim that $5 million is the threshold for richness; Phil Gramm's claim that we've become a "nation of whiners"; and of course the houses gaffe.
Separately, the Obama campaign is apparently planning to deploy surrogates in at least 16 states to press the "houses" attack.
This gift is four-fold: It allows the Obama campaign to reclaim the offensive after a far-too-defensive stretch. It energizes rank-and-file Dems who had been hand-wringing about what they saw as Obama's unwillingness to get tougher with McCain.
It gives Obama the opening he needed to sound a more aggressive populist tone that until now he'd left to others. And it shifts the focus away from national security politics, where McCain was making clear gains, on to domestic economic issues, which are paramount in the minds of voters.

This is going to be soooo much fun!

Obama should take a line something like this: being rich is totally fine, but you cannot take it for granted (anyone who forgets how many houses they have reeks of this). You've got to realize that you were able to get where you are because America is a magical place that allows people to achieve great things regardless of their background and socioeconomic standing. Then he can use that either to jump off on autobiographical elements or on how McCain's economic policies put at risk that dream.
Much more eloquently than I put it, naturally.

I think he should also tie this--and McCain's failure to pay taxes for four years on one of those houses--to McCain calling Americans who are facing foreclosure "irresponsible."
Or maybe, "how can he keep track of the economy when he can't keep track of his seven houses?"

Oh brother, original. By the way sfc, ready to retract your continual lie about offshore drilling. Any facts to challenge the king's EIA. According to the Energy Information Administration regarding offshore drilling:
The projections in the OCS access case indicate that access to the Pacific, Atlantic, and eastern Gulf regions would not have a significant impact on domestic crude oil and natural gas production or prices before 2030. Leasing would begin no sooner than 2012, and production would not be expected to start before 2017. Total domestic production of crude oil from 2012 through 2030 in the OCS access case is projected to be 1.6 percent higher than in the reference case, and 3 percent higher in 2030 alone, at 5.6 million barrels per day. For the lower 48 OCS, annual crude oil production in 2030 is projected to be 7 percent higher—2.4 million barrels per day in the OCS access case compared with 2.2 million barrels per day in the reference case (Figure 20). Because oil prices are determined on the international market, however, any impact on average wellhead prices is expected to be insignificant.
http://www.eia.doe.gov/oiaf/aeo/otheranalysis/ongr.html
Anything sfc? Anything? Huge impact on prices, not and by 2030 allegedly, when india and china will be sucking up oil like there is no tomorrow. A horrible lie to confuse the american people.

Going national is nothing. They need to stop doing hit and run and actually stick to a message and hammer it home. Low information voters don't refresh TPM/Kos/etc repeatedly and those are the people this message needs to get to and will only get to them by sticking to it.
The surrogates is a good start. Hopefully they can keep it up.

I think they need to do a rebuttal to the Paris ads wherein they use McCain on McCain - over and over again on several issues... the birth control/viagra tape (where he doesn't want to give a straight talk answer), and on through a whole list of economic issues; and finally catching McCain as the "hothead" on issues of peace and war (the Georgia issues).
Personally, I don't think McCain is a befuddled as he is plainly dishonest - just clams-up or plays BS when a Hard Question comes at him. Put the Trust Issue right back in his lap??

NIce, but Obama's presentation is a bit too similar to the oft criticized "talking paragraphs" issued by his campaign.
The style is still too desultory and peripatetic - pick a couple of points and hammer away, giving details and move on. The catalog of the McCain campaign's missteps, leading to the "who's he talking to," answer, "the rich" seems a bit opaque to me.
I think the question should be "who isn't he talking to?" m When Obama the "great progress quote" and Gramm's gaffe should be delivered like bullets should go on to talk about how the people in the audience know they're working harder for less, discussing the cost of insurance, gas, groceries, etc. Tie the gaffes into real world problems, strengthening both Obama's empathy - he understands how and why people suffer in this economy - and the sense that McCain is out of touch.
I'm glad to see the campaign finally realizes they need to get more aggressive with their deeply flawed opponent; maybe my criticisms are a bit off base as the tape is spiced together. I'd just like to see the campaign take McCain's constant gaffes - as well as his more carefully considered policy positions - and use them as ways to talk about Barack's understanding of the everyday struggles of the great majority of Americans.

Moreover, Obama could use his recent populist criticisms to play up the fact that he is a "self-made man." No one can possibly argue with this, and, as it's one of the most powerful ideas in American folklore, he should organize his image as a candidate around it. The biographical sketches during the convention could really hammer this home, and I can't image that isn't going to be part of what we see next week.
Much as McCain has used his POW background to his advantage (the trigger-happy theme could help with this), Obama should portray his story as one out of Horatio Alger, contrasting it with his opponents life of privilege and mediocre accomplishment.

I have been thinking about this and I wonder if it could be done something like this.
Sen. Clinton found her voice near the end of the campaign, when she stopped worrying about getting elected, about what would poll better and started speaking from her heart. That is the Hillary Clinton I am asking to be my vice-President. I am asking Hillary Clinton the 6-year Senator to run with me, not Hillary Clinton the former First Lady.
The key would be to try and seperate her as much as possible from Bill Clinton. Other wise we'll get the "Third Clinton Term" to match out "third Bush Term".
She can't be held accountable for Bill Clinton's decisions as President. She has to be framed as her own woman. Of course there would still be Bill Clinton issues that would have to be answered - the Library donor list, the ME business dealings. She might be able to skate on the Presidential pardons.

McCain just plays dumb. He pretends he doesn't know, he says he'll have his people get back. He's done this repeatedly with other issues, like his surrogates character attacks or Corsi's book.

Loving that Obama is on the attack. Greg's last line worries me though. I agree that McCain has made gains in the area of national security, but that does not mean that we should try to shift the focus to domestic issues and avoid foreign policy. Honestly, McCain's economic policies will be a question mark, mostly because he doesn't seem to have any sort of grasp on the complicated issues. But he has clearly outlined his "tough guy", "Us vs. Them" foreign policy that Josh has so often said is perilously demented. Obama's team needs to ride herd and get a unified Democratic message to point out just how dangerous a McCain presidency would be. The facts are there. We need leadership and discipline and persistence to pound that message home with the American people. Truth is on our side. Obama and his surragates shoudl be out there every day talking about McCain's vision for Cold War 2.0, "bomb bomb bomb bom Iran", and his plethora of jingoist rhetoric post-9/11 (mostly directed at Iraq) without any evidence.

Lates Fox Poll:
Obama is extending lead from 41 to 40% to 42% to 39%
Most importantly:
Obama inspires black Republicans to switch parties
Obama not just inspiring black voters to register, but also to abandon the Republican Party
Overall, Florida now has nearly 1.1 million black Democrats, compared to just under 64,000 black Republicans. Louisiana has about 704,000 black Democrats and 26,000 black Republicans, and North Carolina has more than 1 million black Democrats and just under 44,000 black Republicans.
Three other states — Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina — track voter registration by race, but voters don't register with parties. Each has seen large increases in black registration over recent seven-month periods, Georgia by almost 123,000, South Carolina by 43,198 Alabama by 20,844.
This is why even if McWar has made some progress in August, look at what is happening behind the scene
And when the poll suggest that McWar get 20% of the black vote in Indiana, or Florida, you really have to wonder...

Are you people insane? What evidence do you have that the house thing is gaining any traction? I can't count the number of times I've come here and seen you all declaring how "devastating" something is going to be for McCain. You really think if Obama says something that pleases you, then the voters at large will respond the same way.
I used to work in advertising, and it was a common occurrence to have people submit ideas for commercials. No idea of the long term strategy or messaging, just whatever they thought was clever. From reading this thread its clear that politics is like running a sports team; everyone thinks they can do it.
This is the one that killed me: "What does it mean to have a network of online commentators whose analysis of a campaign is constant and immediate?" Do you really think these guys who have been running campaigns for years in places like Chicago really give a shit about the advice from a bunch of bloviating commenters who think they're qualified to give campaign adbice because they comment a lot on blogs? The level of self regard and self congratulation never ceases to amaze me at this circle jerk.
I still think Obama's going to win, but he was pathetic in that clip. You're congratulating him for using ridicule? Ridicule implies at least a dollop of humor. That was dry as toast. I don't suppose any of you noticed there wasn't a single applause break during that entire clip. Obama can't say anything without getting applause breaks. Yeah, he really got McCain alright.

(closeup on Obama making phone gesture with little finger and forefinger over right ear as he mouths "Call me.")
. . . "but then it came to me. What would it be like if Senator McCain actually wanted to start talking about the issues facing us all in 2008 America and beyond?"
(Looks at camera)
"What do you think? Wouldn't that be refreshing and interesting? Tell me what you think."
