Obama Hits McCain With Two New Attack Ads

In keeping with its pattern of running under-the-radar negative ads in key states without releasing them to the national press, Obama is up with this spot in Nevada attacking McCain for favoring the storage of nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain.

Meanwhile, at a time when leading Dems are pressing Obama to sharpen up his economic message, he also is up on the air with a new spot painting McCain as out of touch. The spot features a now-infamous GOP-primary quote from McCain: "We've had a pretty good prosperous time with low unemployment and low inflation."

Unclear where this one is running. (Both ads via Politico.)

It's working. No problem.

We're just stunned.

"If you don't want nuclear waste here, you don't want John McCain."

Ouch.

:-)

We're just stunned.

Or perhaps just pinin' for the fjords...

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the second add is being run in Indiana, more specifically eastern Indiana. The part that borders on Ohio.

Nice Nevada ad.

I think the targeted state ads are a brilliant strategy.

Next up: Colorado!

I think so too HR. Got a feeling its going to be a big couple of weeks for us starting today.

The same technique but the water issue.

That's a winner.

Didn't you see that Romney has already announced that McCain doesn't speak for the McCain campaign on the water issue?

http://www.denverpost.com/ci_10248512?source=rss

Now that that's been cleared up, the MSM will now get back to concentrating on who's bringing the potato salad to the next BBQ.

haha, pathetic.

The water compact ad should have been up yesterday.

Agreed.

I third that.

user-pic

Please, PLEASE let McCain's choice for VP be Romney...

Question: are you still doing the daily round-ups?

I think the roundups are for the weekends.

They had been doing them during the week too, until yesterday.

user-pic

I think Eric had been doing them.  Regular as clockwork -- just before 9 a.m. ET.

But I haven't seen any posts from him lately.  I'd guess he's been on vacation.  But I see he's got a post up just now.  So maybe this regular feature will make a comeback soon.

Welcome back, Eric.  We missed ya!

The second ad I've seen running in New Hampshire, not sure about any other states.

user-pic

The second ad is very good too - they need to come up with more like this. Make it clear that McCain is clueless on how bad the economy is and how SCARY things seem to most folks. And scary is the word I hear people (not just Dems) using most often.

And "McCain, more of the same" is good - but how about something like "John McCain - he can't fix the economy if he doesn't understand how bad things have gotten" or "...if he won't even admit there's a problem." Whatever, but hit him really hard with it, over and over. The economy is the big issue Obama can pummel him with.

Specially with this little jewel on the Laura Ingram yesterday:

"...I still believe that the fundamentals of our economy are still strong..."

Don't take my word. Listen it yourselves:

(The quote is at the fifth minute of the call)

user-pic

Dude! That is funny as hell!!

"she voted for the VP slot before she voted against it!"

"that joke doesn't make any sense"

"FLIP! FLOP!"

I was dying over here.

I'm from the heartland
I won 2 elections from a GOP state
You also look like John Kerry
The spitting image
Uncanny

FU Douchebags....still laughing!

Come on guys, don't give it all away! Funniest thing I've seen all week.

Literally choked on the peach I was eating. Funniest thing this election cycle.

Just wanted to say Gerry Owens to you. being a ex cav. trooper myself. C trp 3/7

You don't have to be negative but it is a great idea to appeal to people's anger (not bitterness!).

All of us are just plain pissed off.

This is our time.

And what's Obama's plan for atomic energy? Oh, that's right...No atomic, no oil, no coal, suck it up pay $4.00 a gallon (plus the price increase that comes when he taxes the oil companies again) and hope we invent something soon...soon being 2030 or 2050 according to his web-page.
http://www.sciencecartoonsplus.com/pages/gallery.php

He actually does favor exploring nuclear energy, but the main issue is of where to store the nuclear waste. He does support clean coal technology. You should read Obama's energy plan instead of making these unfounded accusations.

user-pic

"However, before an expansion of nuclear power is
considered, key issues must be addressed including: security of nuclear fuel and waste, waste
storage, and proliferation. Barack Obama introduced legislation in the U.S. Senate to establish
guidelines for tracking, controlling and accounting for spent fuel at nuclear power plants. To
prevent international nuclear material from falling into terrorist hands abroad, Obama worked
closely with Sen. Dick Lugar (R‐IN) to strengthen international efforts to identify and stop the
smuggling of weapons of mass destruction. As president, Obama will make safeguarding nuclear
material both abroad and in the U.S. a top anti‐terrorism priority. In terms of waste storage,
Obama does not believe that Yucca Mountain is a suitable site. He will lead federal efforts to look
for safe, long‐term disposal solutions based on objective, scientific analysis. In the meantime,
Obama will develop requirements to ensure that the waste stored at current reactor sites is
contained using the most advanced dry‐cask storage technology available."

That's the part about hoping we invent something by 2030 or 2050...

I don't see "no atomic" in there anywhere.

The storage of nuclear waste is a huge issue. I don't want us to build new nuclear plants without having that resolved. It also presents a major security risk. Most of our nuclear plants here in the U.S. don't even have adequate security. I worry about one of those being taken over by terrorists.

user-pic

Study it for the next 20 years = No to Atomic energy

No, that's your interpretation of what he said.

user-pic

Nuclear Energy is just a front for McCain,...Republicans are not going to take the energy needs away from the coal industry in the next 10-20 years anyways,...especially when the USA is sitting on top of at least a 100 years supply of coal. Clean coal is the dem's plan,..there will be demonstration sites up and running in Obama's first term. New technology companies need the bucks to make progress and with Republicans, they'll never get it. I mean, think about it.....are Republicans going to hire the French to build and supply their nuclear needs? It's ridiculous,...who in America is going to want a nuclear plant in their backyard?

You are so right SFCWallace! Who cares about where to store the nuclear waste? I mean really, don't we have plenty of landfills around? Abandoned mineshafts? Indian reservations? ANWAR? Not a problem. And securing loose nuclear materials, c'mon. That's just a distraction from the REAL War on Terror, which we must wage on the battlefields and in the cities of Iraq. And Iran. And Georgia. Keep speakin' the truth, brother!

..republicans are reeling.

Fifty-state barakarate(tm) strategy.

It is a 'negative ad' IF it unjustly attacks the opponents condition or being or is about something that is not relavent to the race at hand. 'Negative ads' are about BS content, not tone and tenor.

It is contra-positional to ridducle the idiot's position of a subject.

Pointing out the specifics about how McIsane wants to kill us all . . . and use America as hs toilet is NOT negative advertising if the Obama campaign remains FACTUAL.

I feel like Obama has weathered the storm...McNero's money total is about get alot smaller, convention and VP bounce, DHL, water and Yucca will all slowly begin to eat away at McNero if Obama keeps hitting it.

If it is Biden McNero will face someone who will go toe to toe and deliver barbs that may make some repugs cringe. Then the repug convention a total mine field for McNero. Ghooliaini, the admin boys and unpredictable Huckabee...instead of a bounce he could get the backslap that Bush I got in 92.

All this and the ground game, just here in Mississippi is a prime example, now likely Obama wont win here but still I have seen zero, I repeat zero stickers for McNero here in the deepest of deep south. Obama?

Yep stickers, signs the works. Why is that ominous for McNero? Simple turn out enthusiasm. In 04 wedge issues cost Kerry the election, this year? Not so much. Yes Mcnero will get a similiar % of evangelicals, however, a % of a lower turnout is looking very likely.

So no, Obama wont win here but if the trend I read and hear occurs nationwide he will upset the apple cart in other places or at the very least cause McNero huge headaches that will cost him vital resources needed in swing states.

Finally the debates. The mere imagery will be shocking to many. I truly see an even bigger impact than JFK V Nixon. Will the actual words exchanged even matter? Lets face it low info voters see images and react. If they see ancient v new the spin mesiters can work up a rhetorical sweat and it wont matter what was said. I believe they will see this and will only the lips movement of old v new.

What makes me so confident? Gore v Bush II. Gore dominated in the policy exchanges, but Bush II looked upbeat and new...the trite I'd like to have a beer with that guy nonsense won. McNero frowns, gets angry (visibly) and fires off sarcastic barbs that dont sell well in a national audience. He will come across as old and bitter. This man does not have Reagan's zest. Obama can remain cool and calm beneath the radar. Make it about McNero so voters frame an image "old and bitter after what we jsut had?"

Lesser of two evils? Yep but if Obama can frame that in next month Dr Strangelove v Celeb. The Celeb will win.

The second ad is running in the St. Louis market.

That Yucca ad is very hard hitting. I might have said that it should have mentioned how McCain is talking about 45 new Nuclear plants in his Energy Policy, but I don't want to be negative.

Nuclear Waste should be keep in the State in which it is produced. If you can't safely store nuclear waste then it's probably not safe to have a nuclear plant either.

As has been mentioned, Obama needs to jump on the water issue in Colorado, and even tie it in with the Great Lakes States.

user-pic

Seriously SCFWalace,

I don't believe that Obama is progressive or magic BUT he is radically different from McInsane as Obama believes in government and McIsane has jumped onto the fascist plutocrats 'short-bus.

While your professed liberarian stances is more in line with Bob Barr, you should spend 15-20 minutes examining the oppositions' stances before tossing gernades. As a bright guy who believes so deeply in himself, you owe it to yourself. As an American citizen and a human being (I know that this goes against your grain to give a shit about anybody other than yourself), you owe a duty to society in general and an obligation to those who will follow us to be an informed voter and contribute to the greater good.

Obama has a website. His platforms are there once you get past the continous drum beat to contribute. Believe me there is plenty for you to be pissed off about in Obama's actual positions . . . You don't have to continue pulling stuff out your back-side.

user-pic

"Obama has a website. His platforms are there..." True and once you read through four pages of BS it = No to Atomic energy/No to drilling here/No to Coal/Tax big oil.

Right, and just skip that section on clean coal plants, like the one that just opened here in Indiana. That's pie-in-the-sky stuff.

What we need is atomic power, anywhere, anyhow, and more drilling everywhere. Anyone who looks beyond this summer's gas prices is just a Chicken Little!

user-pic

No, what's needed is "comprehensive" (say it with me). Work towards future technologies, but common sense stuff between now and then. Like using domestic supplies instead of foreign...increasing nuclear power... things we can do between now and 2030 or was it 2050?

user-pic

Had enough?

It remains a powerful question and I trust the Obama campaign will find lots of ways to ask it.

Nobody else caught the image of the child on the swing in the nuclear waste ad?! Yipes! For the millions of us that have seen the Terminator movies a few times, that image is a dead ringer for the one where the next sequence is a nuclear blast sweeping the playground and leaving a charred little skeleton in the swing that breaks up and fluffs away. Positively horrifying.

I have a hard time believing that the image was unintentional. Good for them! Not exactly on point, but definitely visceral.

I am now waiting for the draft ad, which McWar want to reinstate...
Maybe this should be done a couple of weeks just before the elections...

Parents and young voters will sure be happy about this. This will be a home run for Senator Obama!!!

user-pic

Thanks Greg.

This is good. The Obama campaign is on offense.
I like it. This is what Obama needs to do, and to me just where he chooses to attack McCain is not nearly as important as the idea that he's putting McCain on the defensive. I love they way that they use McCain's own words- it forces him into a "nuance" explanation.

Bravo.

I do think that every attack ad should have a counterpart positive message ad that draws the distinction between the two candidates, but thats just me.
