Obama Campaign: Someone With "Zero Foreign Policy Experience" Is "Heartbeat Away From Presidency"
Obama campaign spokesperson Bill Burton blasts out a statement on McCain's pick of Sarah Palin as Veep, and it's a direct hit:
"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same."
By any reasonable measure, the choice of someone as back-up commander-in-chief who has two years of experience running a small-population state should render McCain's primary campaign argument -- that Obama's alleged lack of commander-in-chief readiness is too risky in a dangerous world -- not just moot, but a running joke among political reporters and pundits alike.

I don't care how many times Obama has been elected to office: he won an intensive primary fair and square. That makes him meritorious. The choice of Palin is a slap in the face to those who believe in meritocracy. The GOP has conducted an all-out assault on affirmative action for decades, but in the end the party is now supporting an affirmative action choice. It is kidding itself if it wants the American public to believe that it is the party of meritocracy. It has managed to out-left the left with a choice that comes down to identity politics. We can spin it all we like to make it about energy and "values" but it's identity politics plain and simple.

I think I understand…McCain is going all in on the pity vote.
Q. Sen. McCain, how come you are so out of touch that you don’t know how many houses you own?
A. I was a POW.
Q. Gov. Palin, is it true that you want to overturn Roe v Wade and believe in Creationism?
A. I have a Down’s Syndrome Child.
The entire debate prep for these two will be how many ways can you deflect questions with these two answers.
It’s a no-brainer.

You know what this is? This is McCain's Paris Hilton Argument: Round 2.
This is him saying, "Well, if you think Obama is experienced, then I guess you won't mind if I pick this little hottie". He's daring anyone to challenge her readiness, but he'll say that Obama isn't ready either, so what's the difference.
The Democrats have to challenge her. They have to do it respectfully, but incessantly. While Obama is 'inexperienced' compared to McCain, he's been on the national scene showing his judgement and competence. The American public has been measuring his readiness and ability for a full year now on a national level. Now McCain is introducing a former beauty pageant contestant with a thin resume, and saying, "b-b-but Obama..."
Watch out for this one. At it's very core, it reeks of misogyny. But there's an edge to it. This isn't so much about Hillary and her supporters as it is about Obama, and trying to define him. The cynicism of this pick is shocking, but surprisingly subtle. We can't be afraid of kneecapping her.

She pulled the change line. Now McCain is a catalyst for change, rather than a train for experience? Riight.
Not to mention she set up their campaign from this day forward as a reformist ticket. Against corruption? Keating Five, anybody?

"as much if not more"
Yeah right. Obama has run a $500,000,000 organization that has employed tens of thousands and cooridinated several hundred thousand for about 18 months or so -- and has done so with a skill that is noteworthy even to political veterans. Palin has run Alaska (population smaller than Memphis, TN) for about the same length of time. Obama has been in public service at a national level for nearly four years, and at the state level of one of the largest (in population) states in the Union for eight years before that. That is 12 years of public service at a high level. Palin had a political patornage seat on a utilities commission for less than 24 months before her AK Governor gig started and was in government in a small town (population 6715 according to its website) for a few years before that. Nice try.

"Obama has run a $500,000,000 organization that has employed tens of thousands and cooridinated several hundred thousand for about 18 months or so..." I think if he'd been the CEO of Microsoft we'd had known about it. He's "run" nothing. He's sat on a couple of boards (that he'd like ust to forget about because of who he served with) and headed a committee in the Senate that never held a hearing...you guys keep trying to boost eachother up...you're gonna need it.

I'm more interested in judgement and integrity than "experience". I think it was defined most clearly when it was pointed out that Cheney is a very experienced political hand, more experience really than anyone running for President. Why isn't he running, why was there no outcry from the GOP faithful to have the VP run, as is customary? Too old? He's younger than McCain.
Experience doesn't automatically equate to good leadership or sound judgement. What matters more is integrity and intelligence. McCain has sold out and flip-flopped (remember when that mattered so much?) on so many issues to get the nomination that he's shown a distinct absence of integrity. His choice of Palin shows a lack of judgement at best and a dangerous cynicism at worst.

Not only is the selection of an inexperienced beauty queen as VP an insult to women, given the number of republican women with actual competence, it also reveals something about McCain. He needs to have someone much weaker than himself in the #2 spot. (Hi Cindy!) That's insecurity. It is a deep character flaw with this guy. It needs to be shown to the world.

A women who looks and sounds like a secretary, with an experience record that makes Obama look like a long time Washington veteran, with a charisma... well, no charisma. Honestly, are we been punk'd here? Is this the person who'll take over in the case McCain, a 73 year old cancer survivor, suddenly dies, will take the highest office of the land?
Ladies and gentlemen, the choice is clearer than ever... I stand more sure than before by my previous comment. A landslide is now possible. The gods are smiling at us. Given that Senator McCain's two main talking points, reasons why we should choose him over Senator Obama, have been experience and judgment, this would seem to take those arguments off the table.
I guess the new one will be "I have a woman on my ticket!". Gov. Palin may have just given us a hint of another one; in her speech this morning, she referred to Senator McCain as "John F. McCain".

Tom Ridge would have been trouble. He was the best option.
Hillary's voters will not be attracted to a pro-life interloper who has not struggled, and has zero cred fighting for a woman's right to manage her own health.
This was a dumb pick. Campaigns are about narratives, and plopping this twinky in at the last minute makes a mockery of the GOP's argument that Obama is too inexperienced.
Add the trooper scandel (what's in the water in Alaska?) and this is just a horribly stupid pick. But she shore does make a nice couch cozy for McCain, dudn't she?
Her kids are named Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig.
No Ridge? No problem! Biden will debark her in debate.

This is McCain's first presidential decision? A 72 year old candidate who has had cancer twice selects someone with zero foreign affairs experience. I'm flabbergasted at how bad of a decision this is.
She sounded like she was running for city council in her Minnie Mouse voice, but as bad as she was she managed to out do McCain, who gave possibly the worse speaking performance by a presidential candidate ever...ever. This is the weakest ticket I have ever seen in my entire life.
I was insulted that Palin compared herself to Hillary. Little miss "soccer mom" is definitely no Hillary Clinton.
This election is officially over. The GOP just looks completely desperate and empty.

Dumb, dumb move by the Obama campaign to mock the fact that she came from a small town. Fox News is already hitting them for it; if the MSM and/or McCain campaign really pick that up and run with it, it could have shades of Bittergate.

Don't be stupid. They didn't mock her for being from a small town. They mocked her because her only prior experience was being mayor of a small town.
Fox is just doing the necessary "We're at war with Eastasia, we've always been at war with Eastasia" mental adjustment necessary now that McCain's decided experience isn't important.
August 29, 2008 1:30 PM | Reply | Permalink
No. Not many people pay attention to Fox anymore, and those that do are almost exclusively the unwavering GOP supporters. No independents watch it. Check the ratings and demos.
Fox will spin it for their idiot echo chamber residents, but everyone else in the universe will read it exactly the way the Obama camp said it: it's not about "being from a small town," as you put it. It's about being mayor of that town, and now governor of one of the "smallest" states, being her only "experience." Quote in case you want to read it again:
"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency."
Nobody but dead-enders will even try to spin that into anything but what it is. It's way too simple a statement.

I wish the dems could successfully present the foreign policy issue in terms of experience _and_ knowledge. Let's sit Palin down for a quick pop-quiz: what is the difference between Sunni and Shia? etc.
Obama has spent nearly two years building up a foreign policy advising team. There is a solid infrastructure in place. Also, he has carefully studied and thought about central foreign policy issues. He has an excellent knowledge of the Middle East. This has to count for something. I think we make a mistake if we lump Palin and Obama together on issues of 'experience.'

Andrea Mitchell compared the Biden-Palin debate as a possible replay of Clinton-Lazio during hillary's Senate run.
She overlooks Biden's natural charm when he needs to turn it on, as opposed to Lazio, who was dumb as a brick and couldn't charm his own mother.
What type of drugs are they passing out over at MSNBC?
Oh, and I concur with everyone - this was a cheap, dumb panic move by McCain, and Palin brings nothing but a bit of appeal to the Wingnut Base.

I didn't see it but I suspect she meant Obama as Hillary and Palin as Lazio. Which would be about right since Lazio came off as a fratboy idiot and Hillary came off as cool and professional.

I think the net effect of this will be a significant rise in Hillary's stock. Ironically, McCain's selection of a woman in attempt to co-opt disaffected Hillary supporters, is going to give Hillary more power in the Obama camp going forward. Obama is going to need her more now. I don't necessarily like that, but I think that is how it will play out.

While I'm appalled at the transparency of this tactic, I ask ya'll please please please do not underestimate the power of it. Writing Palin off as hokey, small-town, out of touch, or inexperienced will not help Obama's campaign. Especially due to her popularity among blue-collar voters. Biden is going to have his hands full battling her for their votes. We will be painted as misogynists if we don't use the kid gloves here. Judging by even MSNBC's reporting right after her acceptance speech, she'll be a media darling. This is where the ground campaign and issues attacks are more and more vital. This is McCain's version of a rope-a-dope, and I pray we don't fall for it.

McCain has totally undermined the central message of his campaign, while also taking identity politics and cynical pandering to a whole new low. While Obama picked a VP that would make his ticket and the country stronger, and provide for an able president if something were to happen to him, John McCain chose winning a political campaign above what is best for this country. It is reckless, and putting a true amateur a heartbeat (or stroke) away from controlling the country puts the country in danger. His campaign is over:
http://www.thepersonalispolitical.com/2008/08/mccains-shocking-choice-for-vp-sarah.html
Not to mention it is incredibly offensive to women, and to Sarah Palin herself, for McCain to have picked his VP solely on gender, and fully expecting women all over the country to support him because of her gender. Its shameless. Politics at its worst.

Clueless to the concept of irony the Oilbama team is trying to attack Palin’s “paltry” experience. They did this with a straight face. Did anyone think to check Barack Obama’s resume? As the media starts asking questions of Palin, which they have refused to ask of Oilbama, the discrepancy will become apparent and Oilbama will
find himself in the spotlight. If the standard applies to Palin it must apply to Oilbama, Palin actually knows something about balancing a budget, getting the streets fixed, getting the trash picked up, and going after corrupt politicians and lobbyists.
Oilbama? Hell, he funneled money to the likes of Tony Rezko and did nothing to ensure that constituents in his district living in sub-standard housing were protected. And Barack’s one foray into “management” as the lackey of Bill Ayers on the Annenberg Challenge will be shown to have been a corrupt, insider trading scheme in which he helped steer money to cronies and ignored genuine education reform. That’s why is campaign is fighting so viciously to keep the media from looking at that part of his cuddling with unrepentant terrorist, Bill Ayers.

What's fun about this is that the Republican campaign probably thought they'd steal some of Obama's fire and damp down the strong positive message from last night by crowding the same news cycle space with this announcement. Once everybody gets over their first few seconds of incredulity, it only makes Obama and his ticket that much more astounding and formidable. In an effort to steal fire they self-immolate - it's not a distraction in their favor; it reinforces the perception of Obama's obvious superiority.

My take on the Palin VP pick is that it's another major example of how "unstable" McCain has become. He spends months attacking Obama for not being experienced enough and then chooses a totally inexperienced person for his VP running mate. Along with being more evidence that McCain's a flip-flopper it strongly suggests he's an "unstable" geezer on the verge of flipping out.

For a woman to buy into stereotypes is most offensive especially as I am pretty sure you pride yourself as a feminist.
A little respect for an opponent might be a good start.. how abt really listening and practising what Obama has to say ...like respect for an opposing point of view and people who have a different belief system.
That's what I hate most about this new democratic alliance...those who don't agree with us must be stupid ,uneducated or orrupt..intolerance..that used to be the bushies .

I have seen so much hypocrisy on these blogs today.
It is quite shocking, actually.
Going after Sarah Palin in this way is the first mistake the Obama campaign made related to this.
"Zero" is immediately offensive to women everywhere. She is a mother of 5, for one. The "Zero" is already being taken out of context and will be used just like Obama uses the silly $5 million comment and the 100 year comment.
You would think that the Obama campaign would be smarter than to use language like that.
Get ready, because Palin's acceptance speech will go something like this:
"Barack Obama says I have ZERO experience...
Well let's examine that, shall we?
How many businesses has Barack Obama run? ZERO
How many cities has Barack Obama run? ZERO
How many states has Barack Obama run? ZERO
How many corrupt politicians has Barack Obama taken down? ZERO
How many meetings did Barack Obama convene on Afghanistan? ZERO
How many pieces of major legislation has Barack Obama authored since arriving in the US Senate? ZERO
How many times did Barack Obama visit Iraq in 2007? ZERO
How many times did Barack Obama visit Iraq in 2006? ZERO
How many times did Barack Obama visit Iraq in 2005? ZERO
How many times did Barack Obama visit Afghanistan before this July? ZERO
How many children has Barack Obama raised while holding Executive Office of any kind? ZERO
How many Executive Positions has Barack Obama ever held? ZERO.
...so who has ZERO experience Senator Obama?"
you see how this is going to go...
It will be quite effective. We stepped in it big time...

McCain always bragging about his wonderful life story (remember Keating 5, his bad language noted 22 times and his complete lack of caring concern for his first wife) and Palin with her far right Church experience. Gonna be an interesting run up to the election. I trust Ms. Palin has he slapping hand handy.
