Obama Camp To Hit McCain Hard In Ohio On Job-Killing Deal
The Obama campaign signaled today that they'll be making a major issue of job losses in the big swing state of Ohio -- and aggressively tying John McCain and his campaign manager Rick Davis directly to the problems hurting voters there.
Earlier today the Obama campaign released a radio ad to run in the Cincinnati area, regarding the closure of a DHL facility in Wilmington. "It was McCain who used his influence in the Senate to help foreign-owned DHL buy a U.S. company and gain control over the jobs that are now on the chopping block in Ohio," the ad said.
The issue at hand involves Davis' work back in 2003, when he successfully lobbied Congress -- winning McCain's support -- to approve a buyout of Airborne Express by DHL. Five years later, DHL is planning to shut down the old Airborne Express hub in Wilmington, which would lead to the loss of 8,000 jobs.
On a conference call with reporters earlier today, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe made it clear that he thinks this issue will be haunting McCain's efforts to win this state: "His appearances in Ohio were completely overshadowed by this. And by November 4 in the Cincinnati and Dayton markets this is something that is going to be known by every voter in this area."
Plouffe also sees an opening to chip away at John McCain's clean image. "He was there a month ago in this community and was asked a question about this DHL issue and did not say one word about his role in this or the role of his campaign manager," Plouffe said. "That is the furthest thing from straight talk that we can imagine."
The McCain campaign has been trying to portray Obama as "grand" and out of touch with working folks because he's a "celebrity." The Obama campaign has its response: McCain's own campaign manager profited directly off lobbying that led to a job-killing deal in your state. Which will carry the day?

Goody - this is exactly what he should do.
And this is a really good post, among a whole bunch of them you've put up, Erik.

Good. Hammer them daily in Ohio from now until November.
I'll bet Plouffe has been looking for an issue to eviscerate McCain with. Looks like he's found one.

And get this ad on the air throughout Ohio - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_I6GXfDUSM&e
Worth noting, the questioner in the town hall is Mary Houghtaling, the same woman who was on the McCain conference call calling "Shame on Obama" for exploiting the town and pleading with Obama to take down his attack ad. I bet she'll doubly love this ad if it ever makes it to air.

That ad is powerful. The Ohio Democrats need to seek donations to get it on the air.

Also very telling that McCain mentioned "straight talk" three times in his response to the town hall question and never admitted that he had a part in it.
So much for straight talk, Johnny.

Now doesn't this issue and the TV/radio pieces instantly render the "celebrity" ads to be so nakedly trite, meaningless and (actually) forgotten? McCain has a career full of these types of cynical deals.
It looks like Obama's camp knows how to hold their fire until the enemy presents a big fat open target. The art of political war. McCain's "straight shooting" reputation will be in tatters in a few weeks.
August 8, 2008 6:52 PM | Reply | Permalink
I think this is precisely the kind of strategy Obama needs to be enacting, and I couldn't be happier that he's doing it. If certain people were complaining about Obama not hitting McCain hard enough, I think they just got the response they were looking for.
August 8, 2008 6:55 PM | Reply | Permalink
Me too. Call me naive but I'm still fully not convinced the "celebrity" crap the McLame camp is banking on is effective.
McLame is a gift which keeps giving. It's a poster child for history of questionable and filthy dealings. From infedilities to lobbyists to bundlers to gaffes to war profiteers, McFilthy has so many weaklings.
No point in defending the "celebrity" rhetoric when Obama can attack McLame on other fronts.
August 8, 2008 7:04 PM | Reply | Permalink
I agree entirely. I haven't seen anything to solidly make the case that the "celebrity" attack is effective, and I've said as much in numerous posts.

I agree with you and I really think we may be on the verge of seeing some of that crap brought up again - in the press.
I can't imagine that ads that attack Obama for being popular can possibly be that effective - they might work for people who were already not going to vote for him -
otherwise, I think the whole thing is silly.

I agree. There's not solid evidence to indicate that the "Celebrity" ads have made a solid impact on Obama's numbers. The race has always been close and probably will be close to the end.

The last statement indicates my approval.
Even if I previously indicated that the strategy is fine, this is a serious and valid issue to attack McCain. This is not character assassination, but a demonstration of who's McCain really is going to favor in case he's elected.
Also, the fact that the same person that asked the question in the town hall is the person who responded in name of the McCain's campaign means two things: Or they're trying to be ironic (yeah, right) or they're starting to use the Bush tactic of putting only loyalists to ask the questions.
(On a previous town hall, there was a female questioner who identified herself as opposed to McCain policies. I think it was on NH or Maine).

An excellent bludgeon issue to use against McSame, and unlike McBush's attacks, this one is totally legitimate.
In combination with the other job losses in Ohio, and given the sea change in the Ohio political landscape that took place in 2006, I stand by my prediction that Obama will win Ohio, and with it, the 2008 election.

This may be the item that tips OH (which has been moving slowly to Obama) firmly into the Obama camp. Some points.
This is the type of issue which is perfect for radio, but it requires a large buy that gets inserted into the subconscious. One of my friends is a long-time Democratic media consultant who is a firm believer that a well-done radio ad has a much longer-lasting impact if it is able to create a mental image--but that requires repetition as well as clever crafting. He said that he often will be in an area where he did a campaign a few years prior and will mention he did the media for X. The person will say what a great TV ad it was and describe visuals--it was, however, a radio ad. TV can have a big, immediate impact but it is not as long lasting in most instances. By doing radio, they are making this last and can come back to it in late October and revive the memory.
This is also a great radio play because the Olympics starts tonight and a TV ad on this gets drowned out and would seem inappropriate. Obama's Olympic ad strikes the right tone--and, ironically, the working hands Obama spot subliminally reinforces, or plays off, the radio ad. Home run.
The other important aspect is the political geography of OH. The Wilmington area (i.e., the surrounding counties) is where Republicans have to run up large margins to offset Cleveland and other cities. Democrats won statewide by large margins in 2006 because they reduced the margins in this (and similar) areas and carried some of them. This has the potential to destroy the base vote McCain has to have to win OH. McCain is absolutuely guilty on this one and folks who are loosing their jobs so that his campaign manager can make big bucks as a lobbyist tend to get pissed off and stay that way. Since McCain cannot win without OH, this election may be in the process of being decided in August.
This also destroys the McCain image/narrative/myth/memory as being "above tawdry politics." Will it be this big? Time will tell but expect panic from McCain--they may be scum but they are not stupid. The sliming of Obama will increase exponentially. The problem is that doing it during the Olympics can backfire on McCain. The timing is just pefect for Obama.

I'm pleased.
McCain's vulnerability is counterintuitive. He's a liar. I noticed it during the GOP debates, particularly regarding his attacks on Romney.
There's a theme to Obama's attacks, and it doesn't have anything to do with "jobs". They believe (as I do) that McCain's a liar, and they think they can prove it.
Liberals will really enjoy this, I'll bet.
They're going after him on his perceived strength, which is "straight talk".
As I said, I'm very, very pleased with that decision.

It seems to me that the "rope-a-dope" strategy mentioned on the main page by one of the commenters seems to be in effect here, or at the very least a patience on the part of the Obama campaign. While John McCain wastes more money trying a tactic that has a big chance of failing, the Obama campaign quietly sits by and takes some minor hits until it sees a huge opening, something that will IMMEDIATELY have a large impact and resonate with voters.
Maybe we can refer to it using the old military term "fire superiority". McCain may fire more, but Obama fires more accurately.

I can't believe that Amy Silverman's major profile of McMajorShit published in the Phoenix New Times News on August 7th has sunk beneath the waves so quickly. It reads as being balanced and presents him in a DEVASTATING light. She has a longtime perspective on his career centering in Arizona and has covered his activities for nearly three decades from Phoenix. After reading it, one understands why the Nancy Reagan endorsement last month was such an ICY affair. Apparently, the lady in red loathes him. It was all political expediency.

That whole incident she describes where he sets up the new Democratic governor and then says, "I'll do anything to embarrass a Democrat" really puts the lie to this idea that's circulating now -- i.e., that this negative campaigning is somehow offensive to him and is really being perpetrated by his staff. Right. Because McCain is an honorable man. Honor? Its all in how you define it, I guess.
