New Obama Ad Keeps Hitting McCain's Link To Ohio Job-Killing Deal
Mark Halperin has a new Obama ad that the campaign hasn't publicly released, in which Team Obama stays true to its promise to keep hammering John McCain over a local issue in Ohio: The likely closure of a shipping hub that was bought by DHL in 2003 with the help of lobbyist and current McCain campaign manager Rick Davis -- as well as McCain himself.
The announcer says that "thousands of Ohio jobs are at risk" thanks to McCain, along with statements by average Ohioans talking about the threat they're facing. "It's tough times, when it's a foreign entity coming in and sucker punching us," one man says. "That's how this felt."
The word "foreign" occurs three times in this ad -- perhaps an effort to turn the GOP's attacks on Obama's supposed un-Americanness on their head by hitting Republican trade policy as anti-American-worker.
Watch the ad here.

They're definitely ramping up the level of attack.
Once we get past the convention, I'll wager that we'll see the Obama we've been waiting for.
McCain is not going to know what hit him.

Depends on the polls. If he stays stable or gains a bit after the convention then I would guess that his current level of attack will stay the same. If he takes a dip, he will be more forceful.

Best part of that ad - tying McCain's campaign manager to the loss of Ohio jobs.
Run that sucker every day in Ohio.

If Obama can keep at it, this one single issue had swing OH our way, and keep McLame running all over the place.
This hits right at home.

Is anyone watching Hardball right now? OMG, the Clintonites are on defending the position as to way they are not voting for BO. It is hilarious.
The host, is really showing them the stupidity of their decision. this is soo funny.

The segment is over now, but there was this lady on from PUMA who said that her group's issue is not with BO, but with the DNC. Essentially, they are blaming the DNC leadership for Hillary not being the nominee.

I just saw that. Schuster kicked ass. They looked like ridiculous fools with all of this talk about how the DNC rigged the election for Obama. Ridiculous.

That was soo good. I just loved "I don't know he's in Hawaii". I'll have to use that next time I can't think of anything to say. Shuster was good - really got right on them. $500.00 to McCain huh? And only $50,000 wow - I thought they had millions. Even though their bone was with the DNC they won't vote for Obama ever. They both sounded rather silly. Fun to watch. Thanks for the link.

This ad is way way too xenophobic to come from a Democrat. Can't he hit McCain on economic issues without playing up fears of "foreign entities"?
August 14, 2008 7:22 PM | Reply | Permalink
No.
August 14, 2008 7:28 PM | Reply | Permalink
Well that's depressing, because "foreign entities" aren't the problem here, the problem is John McCain.
All this ad does is play up an antagonism between US voters and people overseas, which is very not-Obama. He should be playing up the necessary antagonism between US voters and John McCain's disastrous economic policies.
"Foreign entities" doesn't need to factor into it; that's just straight Republican-style xenophobia/racism.
August 14, 2008 7:43 PM | Reply | Permalink
The words foreign entities does not need to be front and center but the concept does. McCain sold out workers from Ohio for the benefit of a foreign company. That message will play with blue collar voters. It also directly contradicts McCain's bs "Country First" slogan.
It is not like Obama is painting all things foreign with the same brush, nor is he fear mongering. The ad is simply stating the facts, supplemented with commentary by local workers.

Countrywide First!

Yes, I agree. The problem IS McCain and 8 years of Republican rule. Obama needs to really push the "DAMAGE McCain and the Republican party has done" theme - loss of jobs, loss of prestige, huge debt/deficits, damage to economy, education, infrastructure, Constitution, on and on ad nauseum. This Democratic 2008 theme ought to be "it's the Republicans, stupid."

Hitting McCain non-stop in Ohio for the DHL deal, hit him from now to the election in Nevada for his 45 new Nuclear Reactors Energy plan and his support of the Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste repository.
All politics are local. Find a local issue in each swing state that you can hammer McCain on and do it from now to November 4th.

The PUMA woman must have been on drugs, she was so incoherent..
Thanks nulook23 for the link. this is a great ad.
I wish this will be used by the Obama camp nation wide.
I think DHL deal is going to sink McBushSame in Ohio. I think for Nevada they need to use the Nuclear waste story.

I like the Obama approach right now. General election ads are positive and says what Obama plans to do for the country and then in individual states negative ads that are taylor made for that state such as DHL ad for Ohio, McCain doesn't know how bad the economy is for Indiana, Yucca Mountain for Nevada, Harleys for Wisconsin, etc.
Interesting strategy and it just might work...

That's just the start, state oriented ads can REALLY hit home when they are that specific.

brilliant ad...i get a little cranky when i hear anything negative about foreigners, but this was not over the top..so long as he doesnt continue on some "blame the foreigners" tirade....
country first my big back toe!! keep the local ads coming obama..they are sucker punching mccain where it hurts.....

This is a great ad because:
It clearly demonstrates just how desperate the Lawn Jockey in Chief has become.
It runs counter to many of Hussein's supposed "virtues", for example the appeal to American xenophobia.
It depends upon lies and supposition to make its point and thus is easily knocked back.
Meanwhile Hussein goes on proving what an ineffectual ButtBoy he really is.
And American will not elect a ButtBoy to the Oval Office.
Remember the fantasy that the more people got to know Hussein then the better he did?
Well the end of the primaries disproved that lie.
And now we see the same dynamic playing out for the GE.
Not the White House but a Crack House for Loser Hussein and Shaniqua!
