New Obama Ad Hits McCain, But With Lighthearted Touch
The Obama campaign goes up with a lighthearted negative spot hitting McCain on the economy:
The ad is set to the old Sam Cooke tune "Wonderful World," and features a singer belting out the lyrics "I'm not up on the economy...don't know much about industry...really can't explain the price of gas...or what has happened to the middle class."
In a fun little twist, the ad shows the infamous hug between McCain and George W. Bush, set to these lyrics: "If I could be just like you...what a wonderful world it would be."
The Obama campaign last week launched a series of brutal hits on McCain on the economy, and the new spot suggests that Camp Obama chose a lighter approach in order to keep up the economic criticism of McCain without trampling on the positive messages that will be emanating from the Dem convention for the next four days.
The campaign says the ad is airing in battleground states, but it's unclear as yet whether the ad will run in the 18 states that the Obama camp had been running ads in. Reports last week indicated that the Obama camp planned to go dark in some GOP-leaning states during the convention. More on this when we know it.

I just love it when they show the picture of Grampy Golddigger McCain (aka Mr. Cindy McCain) dry humping Bush's leg. It's a thing of beauty.
I also like the picture of Mr Cindy McCain and Bush holding a birthday cake while New Orleans drowns, but the context of that pic is a little harder to explain.

Watching Cspan now and he is having a rally at Central Phoenix High School.
He brought in Daddy Yankee who endorsed him.
Daddy Yankee. Also known as El Cartel. Who sings a song called "Gasolina" that is about sex and some pretty outlandishly lude content. Wow.

Or better in Spanish: El viejo esta jodido!

I read somewhere--cannot remember where now--that Nancy Pelosi and others specifically said this convention was not going to be just a happy love fest and solely about branding Obama-Biden. They were going to talk about everything that Bush has done and tie McCain in there. So this is not going to be a replay of 2004. I wish I could remember where I read that to supply the link. Will try to find it.

You know, at first I liked it, but I am already in obama's corner. It seems like the ad would play well with people already for obama. I have to agree with mcgltch. They should have made it more hard hitting and not with a sing songy song. The song kind of takes away from the message.
Obama needs to tailor his ads to the people on the fence or leaning mcbush. I still think that its time to get the daisy ad out there. Maybe they can do a daisy ad concerning the economy. Get more serious, because "these are the stakes."

cute and clever is fine but i like the ad because it has the two most important ingredients that ought to be in EVERY ad against mccain:
1. the 'i don't understand economics' quote and
2. the big goofy bush hug pic.
that image and that quote should just be repeated over and over and over and over and over.
August 25, 2008 10:14 AM | Reply | Permalink
You hit the nail on the head!
Hammering home the quote about the economy is HUGE, especially since it has (inexplicably!) replaced Iraq as the #1 concern of voters (at least according to the MSM it has).
And if a picture speaks a thousand words then "the hug" picture speaks volumes. Just like the repugs do, repeat the message over and over and over until it's the MAIN thing people think of when they see McDumbass.

I think ridicule of McCain, sprinkled in - not a steady diet of it - is a highly effective tool. A steady stream of aggressive attack against him will wear on the public very quickly. The best attack ad I have ever seen.
Most attack ads have some serious voice-over telling us how awful the other person is. It's not really something you want to hear and after a short time you tend to tune them out, because they are annoying.
This is 30 seconds of a much beloved song, sung sweetly, something you won't mind hearing again and again. Who wouldn't like short interlude of Sam Cooke (or Simon and Garfunkle who did a great cover) in the midst of angry political chatter?
At the same time when you listen to the words, as you will because most probably know the words of the original and subconsciously would sing along, you hear a mockingly devastating put down of McCain's economic ignorance. Then to top it all off, the huggy bear photo in all its glory.
The downside? No McCain supporter or operative, and especially John McCain himself, will ever want to hear this song again.

This is an old song from the 1950 that would be perfect to parody as John McCain mansions are shown in the background:
THIS OL' HOUSE
This ole house once knew his children
This ole house once knew his wife
This ole house was home and comfort
As they fought the storms of life
This old house once rang with laughter
This old house heard many shouts
Now he trembles in the darkness
When the lightnin' walks about
Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer
Ain't a-gonna need this house no more
Ain't got time to fix the shingles
Ain't got time to fix the floor
Ain't got time to oil the hinges
Nor to mend the window-pane
Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer
He's a-gettin' ready to meet the saints
This ole house is a-gettin' shaky
This ole house is a-gettin' old
This ole house lets in the rain
This ole house lets in the cold
Oh his knees are-a gettin' chilly
But he feel no fear or pain
'Cause he sees an angel peekin'
Through a broken window-pane
This ole house is afraid of thunder
This ole house is afraid of storms
This ole house just groans and trembles
When the night wind flings its arms
This ole house is a-gettin' feeble
This old house is a-needin' paint
Just like him it's tuckered out
But he's a-gettin' ready to meet the saints
Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer
Ain't a-gonna need this house no more
Ain't got time to fix the shingles
Ain't got time to fix the floor
Ain't got time to oil the hinges
Nor to mend the window-pane
Ain't a-gonna need this house no longer
He's a-gettin' ready to meet the saints
