New McCain Spanish Ad: Obama Is A "Celebridad"
Looks like McCain's efforts to paint Obama as a "celebrity" have now gone bilingual! Here's the new Spanish-language McCain radio spot that dubs Obama a "celebridad":
"No hay duda que Barack Obama es alguien popular, una celebridad que dice lo indicado," the announcer says. "Pero hara lo correcto?"
Wow -- this makes two McCain ads in one day pushing the "celeb" smear. The ad will run in "key states," according to the McCain campaign's press release.
And here's the new Obama ad that will run during the Olympics, written to project the same sort of optimism about America that any patriotic sports fan should feel while watching the main program:

I'm tired of McLame celebrity crap, and I don't know how it will play among Hispanics. But I sure love Obama's Olympics ad. Brilliant, hopeful and addresses the most important issue of the day- jobs and economy- in a optimistic way.

Another counterad (similar to what I posted a couple of days back)...I really think that Senator McCain is just jealous.
OPENING VISUAL: Black Screen
VOICEOVER: We know what’s eating up John McCain
FADE OLD VISUAL AND SWITCH NEW VISUAL: Select clips of Sen. McCain hosting SNL, appearing in Wedding Crashers, and guesting in “24”
VOICEOVER: He was supposed to be “The Celebrity”. He was supposed to be “The One”. He was supposed to be the candidate who could draw tens of thousands of people and get them “Fired Up and Ready to Go”.
FADE OLD VISUAL AND SWITCH NEW VISUAL: Speech of Sen. McCain showing green background
VOICEOVER: Instead he gets lukewarm reception from people wherever he speaks
FADE OLD VISUAL AND SWITCH NEW VISUAL: Senator McCain embracing President Bush. In the screen, show all the failed policies of President Bush that Senator McCain has embraced.
VOICEOVER: But that is the natural consequence when he embraced the policies of President Bush that have failed the American people
FADE OLD VISUAL AND SWITCH NEW VISUAL: Select footage of Senator Obama’s speeches in Oregon and Berlin. In the screen, show policies of Senator Obama that differ from Senator McCain and President Bush
VOICEOVER: (after several second of showing footage of the speeches)…Senator McCain, Jealous Much?

This should be set to "Send In The Clowns", or even better, get John Legend or someone to sing it, and change "clowns" to "clown."
Isn't it rich?
Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clown.
Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around,
One who can't move.
Where is the clown?
Send in the clown.
Here's already here...

Greg, celebrity is the least harmful aspect of this ad. It goes on and on about Obama taxing people who earn as little as $42K and about taxes for the elderly and for the sale of one's home. It then asks if we are ready for change that leaves little change in our pockets. It's very negative and deceitful, celebrity framing aside.

In an effort to counter this celebrity garbage, I once again implore Obama to adopt Dos Equis' "Most Interesting Man in the World" ads.
Barack Obama, on bowling --
"No."
"Stay thirsty, my friends."

For someone who purports to represent a Border state in the US Senate, McCain's ignorance of hispanic culture (okay, Mexican if we need to be specific) is stunning.
Put simply, anyone who has the slightest understanding of how border/mexican politics work knows how laughable it is that he's trying to score points by labeling him a 'celebrity.' Ever been to a Carne Asada, Walnuts?
All I have to say to McCain is, no mames guey.

...but he's not running out of material:
"America is …, uh, is no longer, uh … what it could be, what it once was. And I say to myself, I don’t want that future for my children."
I can't wait for the uh...um....der-der-der...debates.

This is good and along the lines of the way Obama should respond to all of this celebrity crap. I would probably take out the multiple references to The One, as this may already have negative connotations (which cannot be flipped at this point).

Are these commercials even going to resonate in the Hispanic community? Is being a celebrity considered as negative? I really have no idea.

The notion of celebrity being a negative in Latin American culture is a clueless projection by his campaign of anglosaxon puritanical modesty.
The lies about taxation, however, are troubling.

The celebrity ads aren't just silly, they're self-defeating for John McCain. "OMG, our opponent is really popular, and we're not so much". Of course they're trying to set the stage for what's going to happen in Denver in a few weeks, but what's happening is McCain is just coming across as petty and jealous. The ads reflect much more poorly on him than they do Obama.
Plus I starting to get that same feeling I got during the primaries when Clinton's camp overextended themselves going on attack against Obama. Personally, I welcome these types of ads in all the "key states" they choose to run them in.

Not so sure about that. The ads play to people's envy -- the Karl Rove line about Obama being "“the guy at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette that stands against the wall and makes snide comments about everyone who passes by." Never mind that it's false, it gets Joe Sixpack jealous of Obama. He was the popular guy in tenth grade. Or sixth. And you weren't. So you're jealous. And it all happens at a subconscious level. That's why it works. You don't vote for someone you're envious of.

To you and me, maybe. But to non-Democrat, non-political junkies? Again, not so sure.

I can't believe the weasel still ran for President knowing that story was out there. I don't think McCain will touch this story though, other GOPers might, but it shouldn't effect the Presidential election unless Obama is asked about Edwards' endorsement.

What a freaking idiot. Keep it in your pants. I am thoroughly disgusted by his behavior, perhaps it strikes home as I had an aunt who died of cancer and my uncle was there for her, every second of every day, hand and foot, after they got the 6 month diagnosis.

This is really bad for the Democrats. Why can't they keep their penus in their pant? Geesh!!! Obama was going to use Elizabeth for the campaign during the fall, now, John Edward just blew that opportunity.
I feel for Elizabeth, though. Mr pretty boy is just another Bill Clinton

On a personal level, I wouldn't want to push that, because she's had a lot of devastating things happen to her. But if she chose to go forward with working toward a Democratic victory, nothing that has come out thus far would force Obama to distance himself or his campaign from her.

I think their strategy is this: they are trying to pre-empt Obama's conventional speech because they know the crowd will be so overwhelming and energize.
In other words, they are creating a narrative for Obama to work into it. The more people shout his name at the convention, the more McCain will want low information voters to remember that celebrity Ad. McCain’s campaign is basically setting expectation with the hope the Media Talking heads will buy into it come Convention time. Let me guess, the first person to buy into it will be CNN Gloria Burger, follow by CBS clowns and ABC

Well you know who else was a celebrity? Selena.
In So.Texas they practically worship her, still - and I bet they'd even vote for her if she wasn't dead.
August 8, 2008 3:05 PM | Reply | Permalink
...again, Selena had talent...the point of the ad was that Paris and Brittney were talentless (and hence Barack), unless you count over exposure as talent.

There's a pretty big difference between 5th from the bottom of your class, and President of the Harvard Law Review. If you were so inclined, you could make a pretty decent case that Obama has a hell of a lot more "talent" in his left foot than McCain has in his whole being.
August 8, 2008 3:18 PM | Reply | Permalink
does it take talent to crash planes? I guess you have to know how to take off.
August 8, 2008 3:32 PM | Reply | Permalink
As of course is McCain despite his numerous celebrity appearances on SNL, the Daily Show, a movie, etc. Plus his staggering wealth, rich family, six homes...
It is really no contest at all as to who the talentless celebrity is. Games, set and match to McCain on that!
Of course the funny part is that McCain has to use to two skanky Republicans (Hilton and Spears) in his own ad! LOL! That speaks volumes.

I'm a latina and not that we're monoliths are anything but at least in my home country (Brasil) being a celeb (hell who are we kidding, Barack is a rock star) is a damn good thing.
August 8, 2008 3:10 PM | Reply | Permalink
Hispanics have a different take on celebrities.
In fact, some of the Latin Americans former and current presidents behave as celebrity. The best example of this is Hugo Chavez of Venezuela.
I won't think the celebrity tag will stick in this crowd.
PD: I personally think that Chavez is the biggest douchebag on the planet. Eventually that's something I explain in a more detailed manner.
But the Mccain's ads have found a problem today with the Olympics, the Russia-Georgia war and now the Edwards affair; that the attention they wanted won't be be there this time around.

Finally as the great DemBillc has pointed out all along since the beginning of this campiagn in 2005, Barack Obama chose to side with his lobbyist benefactors over the American people, and that he voted FOR the Bush-Cheney Energy bill. Hillary Clinton or John McCain voted against the bill. DemBillC has said repeatedly that he would never vote for Oilbama since he proved he is in the pocket of Big Oil.
That alone is reason enough to not nominate Barack Obama. When push comes to shove, Oilbama always sides with same old money men. If every American voter knew that Barack Oilbama voted with Dick Cheney and George Bush on energy and profiteering for big energy companies, they would dump this pretender of Change and Hope.
