New McCain Ad Evokes Hillary 3 A.M. Spot, Says Hillary Was "Right"
On the day that Hillary's set to address the Dem convention, the McCain campaign goes up on the air with a new spot that evokes her most controversial ad hitting Obama -- the 3 A.M. spot:
McCain's ad opens with the Hillary spot's 3 A.M. question and segues into a montage of images reminding you that it's a dangerous world out there. It then airs footage of Hillary delivering her now-infamous line about McCain's "lifetime of experience" and her claim that all Obama brings to the commander-in-chief's desk is a 2002 speech.
"Hillary's right. John McCain for President," the spot says, in an apparent effort to hint that she thinks McCain is the better pick (she has, of course, repeatedly endorsed Obama).
The McCain camp is trying to keep Dem division alive and well by evoking two of her harshest primary criticisms of Obama right on the eve of what is likely to prove her highest-profile pitch to embittered supporters that the time has come to get behind the Dem nominee. Full script after the jump.
CLINTON AD: It's 3 a.m. and your children are safe and asleep.Who do you want answering the phone?
ANNCR: Uncertainty. Dangerous aggression.
Rogue nations.
Radicalism.
HILLARY CLINTON: I know Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience that he will bring to the White House.
And, Senator Obama has a speech he gave in 2002.
ANNCR: Hillary's right. John McCain for President.
JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approve this message.

I think they are making a mistake with these ads. Tonight's speech isn't as much as about what she says. but how she delivers it. The more McCain makes Hillary a tool of the RNC, the more they are motivating her to sell her support of Obama to the country.

Talk about an "I told you so" moment for all of us who felt she crossed a line when she said McCain is more qualified than Obama to be Commander-in-Chief.
Greg, I know you've been defending her against a lot of accusations, and I don't buy any of the conspiracy theories, but that moment from the primaries was and remains unforgivable.

I guess tonight we will find out whether she realizes that she crossed the line. My feeling is that, with the heat of the primary in past, she does. I expect her to try and lessen the damage as much as she can.

With huge swaths of the party thinking she is trying to game the system so she can run in 2012 what choice does she have?
I think this PUMA thing (if you believe it is real, and not just a creation of the GOP and the media) is going to backfire dramatically.
If, God forbid, Obama loses one of the prime naratives as to why will be because of sabotage by the Clinton camp. That will totally destroy her future chances as a Presidential candidate.

I disagree. I think she is planning on giving an endorsement, although a tepid one and doing the bare minimum required of her.
Four years from now, she thinks (probably correctly) that people will forget 2008.

You are probably right about what they think, but political junkies will NOT forget.
The fact that SNL and late night commedians have been pushing the 2012 narative means it will stick in many peoples memory.

Thanks, Hill. We knew that was going to come back in an ad and here it is. Which is why her speech tonight is so important. She needs to bludgeon McCain - and owes as much to her party. It could be argued this is the most important speech for the Dems during this convention. Gulp.

And doesn't campaign on weekends and blames his love of ABBA on his time as a POW?
PS - ABBA didn't get together until 1972. Unless the Vietcong played ABBA at max volume as a torture method (it would work on me) there is no way McCain's status as a POW has any tie into his love of bad music.

As McCain and his campaign continue to harp on what HRC said during a heated primary it becomes more of a reflection on Clinton than it does on Obama.
Whether McCain realizes it or not, he is presenting a 2008 version of the "I was for it, before I voted against it" ad, only this time it's starring HRC. For a candidate supposedly seeking to appeal to Clinton supporters, maligning Clinton's character is probably not the way to go about it.

This could be a world-class trap for McMansions.
The question is, will Hillary pull the lever on him tonight? McCain's basically daring her (and, by extension, the Big Dog) to blast him.
Note that Mark Warner is tonight's keynote speaker. But Warner doesn't do bludgeoning, so he's going to pretty much be positive in his remarks.
However, a keynoter usually ends the evening. Not tonight. Hillary goes on AFTER Warner. I think she's going to use that prime-time opening to drop the hammer on Senator 894.

So why hasn't she dropped it yet? She's had all summer and nothing particularly powerful has come out of her mouth.

My guess is that this is aimed squarely at the media. And to try and rile up anxiety amongst Democrats (specifically Obama supporters).

The more of these ads he puts out, the more I have to question whether he's actually going to pick Romney as VP candidate. Surely they look THAT far ahead .................... but maybe not.
Good question BobFred2 - as someone else on this board suggested, the networks should adopt some policy re: how much they play these ads - reflecting 1) how much money the campaign is actually sinking into them and 2) how much time they gave the opponent's ad if it's a responsive one. Hopefully they make some effort at fairness on the main channels, which is all that many (most?) people see.

So uhmm...who still thinks her staying in past Feb. 19th was a good idea?
August 26, 2008 8:34 AM | Reply | Permalink
Feb 6th. She should have dropped out then, but I'm willing to be a Clinton, move the goalpost and agree that the 19th should have been the last day of her campaign.
Frankly, I'm not expecting much of anything from her tonight. I'm sure tonight's speech will be a repeat of her June speech. She knew that her words would be used by the GOP in ads, yet she still went out and showed her ass. Then, managed to get all huffy about not being a serious VP contender, making all these demands about how much honor she should get at what was supposed to be her coronation...I will shocked if she did more than shake a finger at McCain. The Clintons seem to be loving all that negative attention they were getting yesterday.

I'm guessing she'll give about 20 minutes. I don't know if I can hold my breath that long waiting for a harsh attack on McCain and/or a steel-spined exaltation of Obama.

no big surprises here!!! mccain has effectively given obama a boon...this mischaracterization is no longer about obama, it is about HRC...can he villify her anymore? geesh!!!
the wimpy dems, could easily turn mitt romney against mccain also...he said equally damaging things...HRC is not VP and neither is Mitt R, so both should be fair game...i pray for the day Dems develop real cajones.....I am still young, so I am hopeful that day will come soon...hopefully tonight!

Can we take it to the bank that most of the Hillary Holdouts will look at this crap and be hideously offended?
August 26, 2008 8:45 AM | Reply | Permalink
I don't think they will be offended. I think they will say, "McCain is right." I hope they make a bee-line for the Republican party, because this is one of those "cut off your nose" moments. Let the bloodshed begin.
And to das3002, a lot of us sounded the warning and were attacked vociferously, and sometimes viciously, for doing so. Seems that the chickens have come home to roost.

To me the question is how hard and effectively does Hilary attack McCain. Or will it be just an afterthought in a speech that is centered on herself and the grievances of her supporters. Is she a Victim or is she a Democrat?

What Hillary said she said, in today's world you can not take it back. The damage is done.
The Democrats need to aggressively set the agenda. Attack, attack, attack. They can not allow the age-old republican tactic continue unchecked. The only way to neutralize the Hillary damage (and it seems she gave the Republicans many opportunities to run similar ads to the 3 a.m. ad) is to put the McCain people on the defensive. We need John McCain responding to Senator Obama ads. We need the news clips to be all Senator Obama initiatives - not McCain.
On a slightly different note - Lyndon Johnson used to say, "I don't care what you say about me, just mention my name." How does this philosophy work in today’s world when John McCain ads use Senator Obama's name more than his own in his ads?

Thats why I am glad the Dem convention is first because a excitement and buzz threshold will be set and the Rep have to meet or cross that excitement threshold or else their convention will be a dud.
Plus with McCain attacking during the convention, it gives BO camp a marker to guide them in what works and what wont for next week attack ads against McCain during their convention.
All McCain has is Hillary's primary comments. I think BO campaign is going to do something bigger to totally upstage McCain next week.

Ugh. The first part of the ad is so heavy-handed with its ominousness that it almost undermines the bite of the second part -- Hillary's quote.
But sadly, not quite. That quote should never have been authorized, and should never have been waged.
I hope she kicks his butt tonight.

Billary's whole plan is, and has always been, to make sure McCain would win the White House should Hillary not be the Dem nominee.
Her nutty PUMA whack jobs are of the same mindset, and she will continue to signal them that she wants them to stay home in November.
That the Dems are still in the thrall of this sicko couple speaks volumes about a cowardly generation.

Hillary is retreating to fight another day.
Tonight she will offer an endorsement. But in reality it is her first shot in her run against President McCain. Obama is irrelevant at this point.
August 26, 2008 10:25 AM | Reply | Permalink
McCain is blowing all his good Clinton stuff now. And he's doing it in a way that gives Hillary a huge opening -- during a highly anticipated free platform -- to rebut John McCain with force. Basically, McCain is giving Clinton a perfect opening to reunite the Democratic party if she chooses. He's almost daring her.
I know they're trying to limit Obama's post-convention bounce, but they're really playing into a trap here using Clinton this much right before she's scheduled to give her big speech. If anything, they're forcing Clinton's hand and making her rebuke McCain forcefully.
If this is the type of nuance and strategy that we can expect from a potential McCain administration, Putin is going to run circles around these guys.

McCain just took the 3AM ad to a WHOLE new level invoking actual video of war (tanks and missiles) to scare people into voting for him. Despicable.
August 26, 2008 10:51 AM | Reply | Permalink
These ads would have been playing from now until November if Hillary was chosen as Obama's running mate. However the GOP is blowing this wad now because they just want to keep sowing the seeds of dissent during the convention, hoping to cause a situation between dead-enders and Obama during his speech.
The GOP is essentially killing two birds with one stone here, because if they can use Hillary to help take down Obama, they're effectively ending any shot Clinton has in 2012 and destroying the Clinton legacy within the Democratic party.
