New GOP Ad: Was Hillary Right About Obama's Experience?
The Republican National Committee sharpens its efforts to sow division among Dems on the eve of the Dem convention, releasing a new, hard-hitting ad that uses footage of Hillary delivering one of her harshest attacks on Obama's inexperience during the primary.
"Senator McCain will bring a lifetime of experience to the campaign," Hillary says in the primary footage aired in the ad. "I will bring a lifetime of experience. Senator Obama will bring a speech he gave in 2002."
"Now Americans must ask ourselves, Should we elect the most inexperienced presidential candidate of our times?" the ad's narrator continues. "Or was she right?"
When Hillary said this stuff it was widely predicted -- accurately, it turns out -- that it would be used against Obama. The RNC, apparently, held off on using this particular footage until the start of the Dem convention, in the belief that they will be effective in sowing more division.
Late Update: Vid added above.

You know what this is? This is the campaign the GOP had ready to run if Hillary had been chosen running mate. They just tweaked it is all.

It's a great ad. Why the Obama camp wasn't out ahead of this completely predictable campaign of anti-Obama Hillary ads, I have no idea. Maybe they're busy making another funny song about McCain not knowing much about the economy.
And is it just me or are the Republicans winning the propaganda war here by the virtue of simply creating and releasing just an ungodly number more ads than Obama and the Dems. Since Biden was announced, this is at least the fifth ad they've released, whereas Obama has released the Sam Cooke song. It just seems to me like there's no urgency to the Obama campaign.

You are correct, but with the Dem convention dominating the news this week much of it will go unheard.

Unfortunately, I think it will. The media is enthralled by the "Clintons and Obamas hate each other" story line. So, anything that focuses on dissension/highlights any inkling of party division will get much more press than it should.

Do you have an idea they could get ahead of ad that uses someone's actual words. The only way I can think of is if they had Hillary in ad saying I said this on this day, and I was wrong. Don't think she would do it.

They could have cut an ad with Hillary talking about how great Obama is, definitely. That's an easy one.
August 25, 2008 11:35 AM | Reply | Permalink
And that ad will come from what she says at the convention.

True, but they already have more than enough for a 30 second ad.
August 25, 2008 11:39 AM | Reply | Permalink
Do you really think this ad will sway anybody? Republicans hate Hillary and it will make no difference to her supporters who (a) are already backing Obama and (b) those who will never back him.
Besides, McCain and the RNC aren't even running these ads. They're just releasing them to the media to drive the "Hillary v. Obama" narrative and the media, always looking for a negative story, is eating it up.
August 25, 2008 11:46 AM | Reply | Permalink
I haven't seen all of her speeches, but what I have seen has her attacking McCain but when it comes to Obama it's in the weak vein of "we need to elect Obama." To counter this we need Hillary saying "Obama is the CIC this country needs." If that's out there, then yeah put it out there.

Don't blame Obama's campaign or the RNC. Hillary's the one who's keeping all of this alive...she has one shot left, her speech, to convince eveyone she's behind Obama (and not with a knife in her hand).

The GOP is doing the Dems a favor: by painting Hillary this way, she will be under tremendous pressure to do more than pay lip service to party unity.
Actually, the tag line about "lack of experience" is amusing.
Remind me exactly what Bill Clinton had done in foreign policy before running in 1992? Arkansas isn't exactly the epicenter of the country in technology nor culture.
Of course, people will cry: but look how much he was able to accomplish because he was smart!
To which I will reply: Exactly. And so will Obama.

Really, I think a lot of the Hillary dead-ender/PUMA stuff is way overblown vis a vis their actual numbers and hold on reality. (Seriously. The people that I've seen who represent PUMAs seem truly unhinged. They make themselves too easy to dismiss.) CNN and the rest are breathless over "divided" party drama because well--that sells.
IMO, she could be far more pro-active in shutting this type of thing down. Now that there's an actual commercial featuring this bunk, however, this more pressure on her, without a doubt.

Had Hillary been selected as running mate, it would have been ads like this, as Jonze noted (they already put out the Joe Biden version, PLUS "The ticket appears to be in the wrong order", PLUS, "If Obama couldn't stand up to the Clintons, how can we expect him to stand up to ?", PLUS Marc Rich, BJs, Clinton's post-presidential lobbying, etc, etc, etc, etc.
All the howling on the right about Obama not picking Hillary or Kaine or Sebelius or Bayh is because those are EXACTLY the people they wanted him to pick. All they can come up with re: Biden is that he puts his foot in his mouth sometimes. And they're scared as hell about his attack dog abilities and appeal to older, working class folks. The only other folks who may have worried them more are Mark Warner and Jim Webb, and both took themselves out of the running early. I'm not saying Biden is the perfect pick, but of those available, I'm betting he's the last guy the wingers wanted Obama to pick.
Had he picked Hillary - and I remain convinced she had no interest in the job - the attacks would have been much worse.

Let me tell you some things.
First, anyone can sue anyone for any amount-- all it takes is a name, a pulse, and the filing fee. Second, when you take a public position on the merits of a well-publicized jury award in a personal injury lawsuit, you need to be more than a Hannity-style knee-jerk schmuck. For your own sake, you should have some facts to support your ideology.

If you want to talk about how focusing on the fact that McCain is so out of touch with the economy in the US that he can't even be bothered to remember that he owns at least 7 homes is dangerous territory for Obama, I'll see if I can dig up Mark Halperin's email address.

A new Obama ad uses the classic Sam Cooke song "Wonderful World" (with altered lyrics) to show that McCain doesn't "know much" about the economy and would continue the policies of the Bush administration. The closing line: "Do we really want four more years of the same tune?" The ad begins airing today on national cable in battleground states.

Hillary's response (From Politico's Ben Smith):
"I'm Hillary Clinton and I do not approve that message," Clinton tells the New York delegation of McCain's ad that features her old criticism of Obama.
Clinton says Democrats are gathered in Denver for a "clear and specific purpose and that is to elect Barack Obama President of the United States," my colleague Amie Parnes reports.
"Now I ask each and every one of you to work as hard for Obama as you worked for me," she said.
I want to see that line (say it by herself) in an ad ASAP!
Also this little jewel from FiveThirtyEight.com:
"...it also tosses a big softball to Hillary Clinton, who will speak to a national audience on Tuesday. The risk to the Republicans can be summarized in five words: "Shame on You, John McCain". A finger-wagging, how-dare-you moment by either of the Clintons at the convention -- but especially Hillary -- could be both effective and therapeutic, especially when coupled with a reminder that McCain voted against measures like SCHIP (and voted to impeach her husband)."
Go ahead. Discuss.

These ads do nothing more than to remind Obama supporters why they did not vote for Hillery Clinton. This campaign of Division will hurt Hillery if she ever runs for President again. Her supporters have ruined her chances of ever being President. It takes all of the Democrats to put Hillery in the White house, I think they may have forgotten that one little fact. They had better pray that Obama wins, if Hillery is ever to get a chance of being this country's first woman president.

#1 Whether or not Hillary's campaign said it, it's still the truth and it would have been used in any case. It isn't a lie that Hillary made up - it's the truth that his supporters refused to accept. If anything, Hillary went too easy on Obama, which accounts for the way his campaign has completely fallen apart under heavy fire from McCain.
#2 Even Joe Biden said the same thing - that Obama was not ready to be president. So why not blame him for giving McCain the idea? Because the Hillary haters can never resist blaming her for all of Obama's shortcomings as a candidate.
#3 Obama had a duty to unite the party. If he had chosen her as VP, what she said in the primaries would no longer have the same effect. But Obama failed in his duty, and snubbed half of all Democratic voters that supported her. His own actions are what make the charge of political inexperience valid. That's why most Americans will judge him to be too immature to unite his own party, let alone unite America.
