Mystery Deepens Around McCain Bundler
The New York Times has elaborated on the story of Harry Sargeant, the McCain bundler who has collected some interesting donations from people who are either apolitical or actually profess to be against McCain. They uncovered an interesting new angle -- and in the process seem to have missed a bigger point.
It appears, however, that Mr. Sargeant, the finance chairman of the Florida Republican Party and the part-owner of a major oil trading firm, International Oil Trading Company, did not actually solicit the donations from the Abdullahs and their friends. That task fell to a longtime business partner, Mustafa Abu Naba'a. Mr. Sargeant said in an interview that he has known Mr. Abu Naba'a for more than a decade and has worked with him on commercial ventures, including a contract with the Pentagon to supply fuel to the military in Iraq.
The point they failed to notice: That same contract to provide fuel for US troops in Iraq has been the subject of a lawsuit against Sargeant and Naba'a, coming from a business partner who is himself the brother-in-law of the King of Jordan. Their partner alleges that they shut him out of his rightful share of the profit after he arranged for the Jordanian government to only allow them in, despite having failed to give the lowest bid.
In other words, Sargeant and Naba'a are being sued for allegedly bilking their business partner out of his take on the deal.

But, but, but... Tony Rezko... William Ayers!!!

Erik, are you on the all new TPM graveyard shift? :)

Kudos to Eric. He gets up early to post the TPM EC Roundup by 9 a.m. and stays up late, much to the delight of us West Coast readers.
Eric, you're blessed. If you've got a job you enjoy, you won't have to work a day in your life!

Old sayings: If you want to see if a stick is crooked, put a straight stick next to it. Obama will take care of that one.
And there is no more powerful disinfectant in politics than exposure to light. Thanks, Erik, and TPM, once again a step ahead of the corporate media.

When a reporter finds that one of those $9000 contributers is a homeless man sleeping on park benches, I suppose then the newsmedia will jump on it. They will do an in depth interview of the homeless man about why Obama is uppity.
Has anyone else reached the logical conclusion from all of these stories? By that I mean, the media theme about McCain being an honorable man just isn't true. When do we face the fact that he is anything but honorable? Or does being a POW confer permanent honorableness to someone?

Or perhaps one of those donors was FDR's dog Fala.
As I recall, Fala does mind when things are said about her.

Of course not, hoppy. If the dem candidate had been a POW, there would be gnashing of teeth from the media about how fit for offce that Democrat was to serve.

It took this story for me to reach that conclusion? I don't think so.
Let's see ... the blackhawk heli followed visit to the safe Iraqi market, the blantant violation of campaign finance laws, the one degree of separation from Ahmed Chalabi, the "uppity" dog whistle campaigning, the boot licking of the "agents of intolerance", the mockery of Obama's suggestions for energy savings, the Keating 5, the contradiction between voting for and against Bush 90% of the time, somehow simultaneously, the offering of his wife for a striptease, the BBQs at the ranch with the journos, the unoffered tax returns of his wife ...
Hadn't been honorable in some time.

...and dumping his wife and kids in Jacksonville, running off to Arizona to marry his chippy and run for the seat of a brand new jerrymandered congressional district, and then opposing same-sex marriage because family is the cornerstone of civilization.

One of the donors, who gave $9200 between himself and his wife, said McCain is worse than Bush. He does not intend to vote for McCain. Why would a small business owner give that kind of money to someone he doesn't intend to vote for? This stinks to high heaven.

I mean, what mystery could there be about yet another McSame blunder? Kept me scratching my head for awhile.

I agree with several folks here... why is this not news?
A possible (pronounced 'probable') scandal involving a candidate (for president, no less) and his money.
The MSM loved the William Jefferson (D-La) story when investigators found that cash in his freezer. This is much worse, right?
I thought that this was the kind of story that you would wall-to-wall coverage on CNN, MSNBC, and the networks (not Fox, of course).

Maybe one problem is that this is pretty convoluted. I mean, for the story to break, they would have to split the screen in two: a flow chart on one side while the anchor on the other side explained it.
As was said yesterday, the media is lazy. They'd rather cover Tyra playing Michelle.

I notice the only fundraising story that has any traction is the story that Obama has raised $112 million of his contributions from contributors of $1,000 or more proving he is just like McCain. Of course, he has raised over $225 million from smaller contributors, a sea change in the financing, but that isn't news. It doesn't fit the narrative.
This story doesn't fit the media narrative either. For guys like Jake Tapper and the rest, John McCain is an honorable man. He would never employ crooks in his fundraising activities. No story here. Move along.

Great posts. Too bad the MSM won't actually share any of the details. I can predict that Wolf Blitzer after reviewing the lawsuit and the facts in the case will say something like, "There may be some issues with one of John McCain's bundlers. We'll give you just enough info to keep you from channel surfing away when the commercial for treatment of painful rectal itch comes on. Stay tuned all you sheep out there. The Wolfman will be right back with more shitty coverage."

I get the impression the MSM is going lite on the Old, Grey-haired Guy cause if did their job and really investigated these odd problems that keep popping up, the repugs wouldn't have a candidate when their convention opens.

And if I may point out (as I have done a few times here and there), he was shot down not because he was spreading rose petals over Vietnam! He is no hero! He should be thankful that they let him out.
And when will the media link his failure to remember names of places, times, sequences of events, etc., to the possibility that this man might be becoming senile? Even Paris Hilton missed that one!

Obama's problem isn't with McCain, its with the MSM who can't say the name "McCain" without adding "maverick."
McCain is less a maverick than many Democrats, people like Sen Ben Nelson of Neb who votes against the party more than McCain ever did.
Aren't the 40 or 50 Blue Dog Democrats in the House also mavericks?
Its not only the maverick issue, its the whole tone of how they report on the candidates. Obama gets more air time, but much of it is negative.

I think we need to get over the "why's the media not jumping on this?" Sadly, the field of journalism has become entertainment; the rich, corporate owners of the media have a horse in this race. Actually two_ they will attract more attention (read sales) if the race is perceived to be close, so they say it is close and they flat out want Republicans because they make the rich media moguls richer. The fourth estate is a myth; it was sold to become a country club. Members Only.

Obviously, you've uncovered some very nasty business here. As a Florida resident, the part that most concerns me is that said bundler is the finance chairman for the Florida Republican Party. I've been feeling awfully helpless here in NW Florida trying to promote the Obama campaign. Full coverage of this story in Florida papers and TV would sure help, but I don't expect it to happen.
Anyhow, thanks for all TPM's good investigative work.

This all reminds me of those intricate Al Qaeda fundraising networks.
Indeed, can there be any doubt that John McCain is now the Al Qaeda Candidate? He certainly seems hell bent on playing into their hands:
