MoveOn Starts Sinking Cash Into Congressional Races

MoveOn is starting to put money into ads in the Congressional races for the first time this cycle, pumping a series of radio ads into the districts of six House Republicans.

The spots, which MoveOn just sent over to us, hammer each GOPer for taking money from Big Oil and backing offshore drilling. The ads describe drilling as a "gimmick," adding: "We wouldn't see a drop of oil from offshore drilling for at least ten years. By then, who knows what prices will be."

You can view a list of the targeted GOPers and listen to the ads here.

The GOP appears to be hanging on to an advantage in polls on this issue, so the more we see of efforts like this to persuade people that the drilling "solution" is a sham, the better.

do we know how long it takes to sway public opinion when it comes to matters of energy policy?

The majority of America wants offshore drilling and connecting Republicans to that is supposed to be a bad thing?

Oh let me guess, MoveOn and Nancy Pelosi are going to sway public opinion by November?

The Dems are doing everything they can to lose.

the majority of americans are facing an economic crisis which does not allow them to take a long view when it comes to energy policy. we have elected individuals to serve us and our interests and to do so with a level of expertise to best guide our country in a positive way.

the democrats, climatologists, geologists, and many other scientists agree with with the energy crisis we're facing, offshore drilling will not solve it. even the bush administration's energy department noted that the effects of the drilling proposals on the table won't have any effect until at least the year 2030, and even then the effect will be minimal. the gop and the oil companies believe that drilling for oil is the best solution.

unfortunately, many people have been inundated with falsehoods about the "benefits" of offshore drilling that they do not realize that offshore drilling only benefits oil companies and not american consumers or our environment.

perhaps you can consider that for a moment before.

The majority of America wants offshore drilling and connecting Republicans to that is supposed to be a bad thing?

Wrong. The majority want relief from current prices at the gas station because falsely believe that more off shore drilling would instantly help that cause.

Come are election day, these same people will be voting with their wallets, which will be empty due to 8 years of inept Republican leadership.

Democrats aren't doing everything they can to lose, but MoveOn.org certainly seems to be. I can't help but point out that it's detrimental to their own cause to run those ads here in Texas. Stupid move.

Perhaps they'll be a little motivated to actually help Democrats win next time around.

"We wouldn't see a drop of oil from offshore drilling for at least ten years. By then, who knows what prices will be."

"Who knows what prices will be" in ten years? That's either remarkably stupid or blatantly disingenuous. Does anyone - anyone - seriously think that oil prices will drop over the next ten years? Does MoveOn seriously think that telling people future oil prices are uncertain will diminish anyone's support for ramping up domestic oil drilling? The instability of oil prices is one of the primary justifications for drilling in the first place!

I predict that this ad will do Democratic candidates very little good. Passing a compromise energy plan, on the other hand...

"we have elected individuals to serve us and our interests and to do so with a level of expertise to best guide our country in a positive way."

Right. And come November, some of those elected individuals in congress will be Republicans headed to Washington alongside John McCain instead of the Dem landslide we were looking at a couple months ago.

What is it worth if we don't win in the first place?

The Dems once again are in a position of having to convince some stupid fucks that the Republicans are wrong about a very simple issue backed by a disciplined GOP message that they already believe in. Why the hell can't we be the ones who appeal to the lowest common denominator instead of liberal nerds on TPM?

If Democrats help perpetuate the lie that we can drill our way to lower gas prices, how would they differ from Republicans?

Most of us out here at the gas pump are smart enough to know that gas prices happen to be going down despite no new drilling.

We aren't as stupid as you and the Republicans think we are.

"The majority want relief from current prices at the gas station because falsely believe that more off shore drilling would instantly help that cause."

I don't care if they falsely believe it, they still believe it. So let's back the Gang of Ten Bipartisan Energy Plan and take the big GOP marketing strategy away from them.

These cocksuckers are effectively turning this election into a referendum on Obama and the Dem congress instead of Bush and the Repubs who controlled congress for a decade before 2006. It's preposterous, and this drilling shit helps. Let's neutralize it now and accept limited drilling where the states have the ultimate say instead of being forced to educate a country full of idiots.

THOSE POSTS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE RESPONSES! WTF!
