McCain: An "Honorable" Person Launches His Political Career From Home Of "Unrepentant Terrorist"

The proprietor of this blog going to keep hitting this point until it becomes a media meme or until he gets carted away by men in white uniforms, whichever comes first.

This afternoon, John McCain described Barack Obama as "very honorable," suggesting that his criticism of Obama was confined to their "differences."

Later this same afternoon, the McCain campaign, hitting Obama for his ties to former Weatherman William Ayres, charged that Obama "chose to launch his political career at the home of an unrepentant terrorist" and said Obama had defended "his long association with a man who says he didn't bomb enough U.S. targets."

So McCain thinks these are the things an "honorable" person does, apparently.

On the other hand, McCain himself wouldn't approve of his own campaign's message about Obama and Ayers and has been forced by external events to wage a vicious and negative campaign against his own wishes. So there's nothing to see here. Sorry to have wasted your time.

you are golden with the men in white uniform comment Greg. Really thanks for pushing this.

Snarky!

It's simple Greg.

McCain says Obama is honorable, but has bad judgement. Bad judgement lead him to Ayers, Rezko, Wright and blah blah blah blah.

This is all about the judgement game for McCain now.

And McCain had the "judgement" to endorse war.

Parry and riposte.

Unfortunately, the Biden pick (which I generally approve of) weakens that argument.

I hear what you're saying, but I disagree in that at least Biden has laid out rational plans as to how to get from A to B rather than staying in Iraq just to stay there, which is what McCain appears to be advocating.

And what do you say about McCan't judgement?

What does it matter? It's not about what I think its about what's going on with the message war.

I'm trying to point out that there is ZERO contradiction in what McCain is saying. And to save Greg from scary men in white uniforms.

McCain said exactly the same thing about patriotism. Obama is patriotic, he loves his country, he just has bad judgement. He is very honorable, but his bad judgement constantly leads him in the company of bad people.

McCain is very consistent now that Schmidt is writing his talking points.

well..a classic side step of my question...just wanted your opinion on Mccan't's judgement since you are a profond critic of Obama. You are such a fair and balanced kinda guy.

You are such a fair and balanced kinda guy.

Actually, I've found Lalo to be quite thoughtful and civilized.  He deals in ideas and hardly ever turns his disagreement into personal attacks.  Very refreshing.

McCain's judgment? Oh! golden. One hundred percent. 5 by 5. Excellent.

Seriously, McCain's judgment is portrayed as multifaceted. He's ready to lead, but cannot control errant individuals in his campaign. He considers Obama unpatriotic, then patriotic but with bad decisions and sleazy friends. He considers it a blessing to dump his wife for an heiress to start his political career. He's ok with endless war and endless costs and endless American deaths, but says Obama will raise your taxes.

I can go on and on, but to me his positions remind me of that Rubik's cube knockoff, the Alexander Star:

After the convention, it might be a good idea to have Biden attempt to debate his "friend John McCain" and "Republican Nominee John McCain," cause those Two Johns would have a lot to talk about. There isn't a single issue they couldn't debate.

Whatever Ayres is, he's definetly a douche bag. Obama says he's denounced his crimes, has he denounced him as a person? I certainly would have. Ayers was a son of privilege who slummed as a radical and used his family connections to get out of trouble (like Cindy and her pill problem)

You go, Greg!

... until he gets carted away by men in white uniforms...

Bellevue or Central Islip?

Keep hitting hard, Greg. Show him the real definition of "honorable"

I'll watch your back as many here will too.

PD: Jack Cafferty, you're awesome! The only good thing on CNN today. Why he isn't in Denver? Come on!

On the other hand, McCain himself wouldn't approve of his own campaign's message about Obama and Ayers and has been forced by external events to wage a vicious and negative campaign against his own wishes.

I wonder if we will be able to extend that logic into the McCain presidency itself after he is sworn in next year.

"Yes, the unprovoked invasion of Lithuania last night is unconscionable. But this shouldn't reflect badly on President McCain, because we can assume he would not approve of his administration's actions..."

"And anyway, he was a POW so he can't be held responsible."

McCain does not speak for the McCain campaign!!

He's a POW, what's the big deal?

Obama to DOJ: Block terrorist ad

"Alea iacta est", the Rubicon has been crossed.

Third party 527's have to advocate a legislative issue. This group is simply smearing Obama like the youtube ads, which is illegal. Of course they get to run the ad, get increased publicity from the lawsuit and will plead ignorance after the election and get nothing.

Obama has to publicize and attack Simmons. Have a boycott of any of his companies, and call him out as a Big Pharm Special Interest who wants McCain to get elected because he'll keep the status quo in health care, which allowed Simmons to make his billions while senior citizens have to choose between getting their meds or eating for that week.

I think Chelsea Clinton has an unusual opportunity to unite the party. When she introduces her mother, she should look into the camera and say, Senator McCain, when I was 18 years old, during an extremely emotional time in my life, you told a very insulting joke about me, which now produces 336,000 results on google. Are you man enough to apologize to my mother, my father, Janet Reno and Me?"

Ouch! I forgot about that one! It is time to get our Bops in on McCain. http://www.bop-o-rama.com That joke was quite nasty.

It does beg the question of whether Obama should get into a "judgment" tit for tat with McCain. Right now, listening to snipets from Iowa and the Biden speech, it would seem they going for the "Out of Touch" attack.

For instance, his judgment let him to the Keating 5. Don't know how effective this would be.

That's exactly right. This is the judgement versus the out-of-touch message battle.

McCain talks out of both sides of his mouth

Well, in another example of his good judgment, I think we can all agree that Obama made the correct choice when he decided not to limit himself to public financing.

I second that. Given what he's up against he'll going to need every dollar to his disposal.

The surogates need to hammer this point home whenever they get the chance.

Obama needs to make his youth a strength. The Ayers thing gives him a chance to go right at age/generational change thing. He was in elementary school when Ayers was a terrorist. He was in elementary school when McCain was in Vietnam. The future is now, the future will be the story of your children and mine. Let's talk about the future and leave the past behind. Place McCain in the past. Focus on our agenda (do we have an agenda? Last I heard Nancy was drilling for oil? Is that it? Oh, well I will hope we find an agenda for the future lying around someplace).

Today we learned that John McCain will do away with any ethical consideration, will break any word he gives, will employ any means to get into the White House. The founding spirit of America means nothing to him. We, the people, have to be focused and steady in our reply ...

I'd like to see an ad with an ordinary person talking about how dental care for their family takes up 10% of their annual income, and John McCain wants to talk about the 1960s and arugula while his swiftboating friends want to talk about someone Obama has met who did bad stuff 40 years ago when Obama was a kid?

Do they really think we're this stupid?

(Idea for ad thanks to the $2600 I'm going to shell out next week for routine dental care. I mean, seriously, that's fucked up, and they want me to forget about that and focus on 40 years ago? That's batshit insane!)

Obama has been justly criticized for his ties to former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers, who in 1995 hosted a campaign event for Obama and in 2001 gave him a $200 contribution. The two have also served together on the board of a foundation. When their connection became known, McCain minced no words: "I think not only a repudiation but an apology for ever having anything to do with an unrepentant terrorist is due the American people." What McCain didn't mention is that he has his own Bill Ayers -- in the form of G. Gordon Liddy. Now a conservative radio talk-show host, Liddy spent more than 4 years in prison for his role in the 1972 Watergate burglary. That was just one element of what Liddy did, and proposed to do, in a secret White House effort to subvert the Constitution. Far from repudiating him, McCain has embraced him.

How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be. In 1998, Liddy's home was the site of a McCain fundraiser. Over the years, he has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns -- including $1,000 this year.

Last November, McCain went on his radio show. Liddy greeted him as "an old friend," and McCain sounded like one. "I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family," he gushed. "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

The Liddy association and his pledge not to swiftboat need to be combined into an ad with a line going to right to the heart of his claims to be a "straight talker".

Liddy committed a treasonous crime against American democracy and McCain says he's proud of him. Liddy told extremists to aim for the head of law enforcement officers because they wear body armor and McCain says he's proud of him.

I also believe there is a case where McCain praised abortion clinic bombers, but don't have a source for this.

After the conventions are over, McCain is going to have to rely increasingly on 527 ads. If they are effectively shunted to ground by that time, he's going to be dangerously close to SOL. I think it's important for Obama/Biden to educate voters on how to identify a 527 (no candidate approval, for one thing) and who's paying for them.

Keep hammering.

user-pic

Repeated from an earlier thread, because I thought it should not die in anonymity (YMMV):

Damn if I didn't just have an idea for an ad that would be the ultimate kick in the nuts. Don't know how it would go in total, but it would include this idea:

"It's no wonder John McCain would prefer to talk about an unpopular war that happened 40 years ago...because then he doesn't have to talk about the unpopular war going on right now that he wants to continue for at least another 5 years."

In one fell swoop, it makes talking about "POW! POW!" a negative and hangs Iraq around his neck.

Keep fighting the good fight.

If anyone reports on this, I'm betting it won't be the Censored-BS network.

Thank you Greg!

To me it is of a piece with saying Obama would rather lose a war than lose an election. Hey, do you think it "opens the door" to reexamining the Bush charges as to whether McCain was a traitor in Vietnam or do we have to give McCain yet another pass because he was a "courageous" POW?

Re: the McCain POW "Pass"... Perhaps there should be an effort to tell the story of Duke Cunningham everytime that McCain/Hero stuff comes up. Even heros can be disgraceful. Duke was disgraceful. So is John McCain.

BARACK!! FIGHT GODDAMMIT!! WAKE UP!! Don't stop punching McCain in the mouth!! Don't waste this opportunity!! This is politics; it's visceral!! Fight with a happy heart and strong spirit Barack!!

Stop talking unity. We're unified now and One Nation against George Bush and the GOP.

Now LEAD this force in a goddamn fight!! Let's attack and score some f#cking points against these criminals.

McCain in a truthful moment... Senator Obama is an honorable man and well he didn't say that he himself is right? Pretty straightforward puts the contrast right out there.

Funny coming from a man who "supposedly" is the Manchurian Candidate.

I read it on http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/

So it must be true!
