McCain Campaign Raising Money Off ... Obama's Call For Keeping Tires Inflated

Weaker and weaker. As you may have heard, the GOP is having a grand old time today mocking Barack Obama for making the perfectly reasonable suggestion last week that one thing Americans can do to save energy is keeping their tires inflated.

Now -- we're not kidding -- the McCain campaign is actually trying to raise money off this. From McCain campaign manager Rick Davis' latest fundraising email...

John McCain says we need offshore oil drilling and we need it now. Senator Barack Obama has consistently opposed offshore drilling -- calling it a "gimmick." Senator Obama's solution to high gas prices is telling Americans to make sure their tires are inflated.

Today, I'm asking for your help in putting Senator Obama's "tire gauge" energy policy to the test. With an immediate donation of $25 or more, we will send you an "Obama Energy Plan" tire pressure gauge. Will simply inflating your tires reduce the financial burden of high gas prices on your wallet?

Is it really possible that this of all things will open Republican wallets? Jeez.

Of course, as the Obama campaign pointed out today, two prominent GOP Governors -- Arnold Schwarzenegger and Charlie Crist, a major McCain surrogate who's sometimes discussed as a Veep possibility -- have also both appealed to people to keep their tires inflated.

Meanwhile, Steve Benen deftly skewers the falsehood at the center of this latest GOP attack: The notion that keeping tires inflated constitutes Obama's entire energy policy. Comically weak stuff...

I think McCain blew his attack load last weak. Comically weak, indeed.

1st weak=week. groan!

user-pic

Heh.  What's funny is that keeping our tires properly inflated will do more to lower gas prices than allowing off-shore drilling.  I.e., a little bit is still more than zero.

user-pic

I suspect you may be right, this past week may have been McCain's high point of the election.

http://strategy08.wordpress.com

I think so too dansac...

user-pic

Hey, the Paris&Britney/"The One"/Blew Off the Troops weak ads appeared to work quite well for McCain. Never overestimate the low info voters - ie, most voters. This plays right into the "out of touch"/elitist theme that McCain is pushing right now. How many folks (other than mechanics/care salespeople, who already know the deal) will bother to actually do a bit of fact checking to discover that, yes, keeping your tires properly inflated can, in fact, improve mileage?

Most people, especially people suqeezed by high gas prices, already know about keeping your tires inflated. It's Owning an Automobile 101.

So McCain is pro wrong tire pressure?

Maybe he's against regular oil changes with correct viscosity oil, too.

New Mccain slogan: "Don't Read Your Owner's Manual!"

user-pic

I guess I'm a little confused: Obama is elitist, nothing more than a pop star, a stranger, who knows enough about the nuts and bolts of gas mileage that he's suggesting the same thing that NASCAR did?

Huh?

Oh, and all the handwringing and jitters that are going on are now creeping into the political mainstream...Ben Smith refers to it today in his blog.

Interesting how concern can become it's own story, isn't it? Can be used for, and for bad.

good n bad that is. ;)

user-pic

Look out for the NASCAR backlash, Johnny!

Tires are the Rodney Dangerfield of the automotive world. Even though they're the only component of the car that actually touches the pavement, tires "get no respect." [...] With escalating fuel prices, the time is now for drivers to focus on simple things like proper tire pressure to maximize tire performance and increase fuel economy.

http://www.nascar.com/2006/auto/07/25/tires/

I'm actually pretty convinced that this is going to backfire. If you work on your own car, this is probably something you keep an eye on and its also something that comes up every summer. Local news here has the "Tips for coping with high gas prices" every week or so now and the number one way is keeping tires properly inflated. I feel like this is going to come off as awfully condescending.

Geez...The answer to Obama's question last week really is YES

Paris and Britney were the best they can bring.

Honestly though, this rather neatly crystalizes what is at stake in this election. On the one side, we have a candidate offering a real (albeit tedious and prosaic) solution to a problem, on the other side we have a candidate indulging in a magic thinking and inviting voters to join him in his happy delusions. If the electorate really decides to vote for McCain because they like the idea of magical solutions to real-world problems more than the modest inconvenience of the real-world work of practical conservation, then we will deserve the fiasco that will ensue (or continue, as the case may be).

Hi. I followed your link from the other post. It's like these guys are competing in different elections! We'll see which tactic will connect most with the American voter.

"Fiasco" rather understates it. When the oil runs out (with no alternatives in place), all kinds of bad shit will happen: war, starvation, economic chaos -- pretty much the end of the world as we know it, and no one will feel fine if that tune comes up on the hit parade.

I don't know that we "deserve" the fiasco, but we sure will get it.

They're trying to frame it as if Obama said "to heck with everything else, just inflate your tires and there will be no energy crisis", when Obama was saying "every little bit helps at this stage of the crisis". Obama just has to make sure that it isn't pushed that this was his only solution and if he can do that, let McCain run this all he likes.

This attack would be an automatic loser and embarrassment if the MSM didn't simply echo McCain talking points.

I really hope McCain runs an ad on this though, because any car guy you talk to will tell you that proper tire pressure, tune-ups and overall car care will noticeably effect your gas mileage.

And I thought part of the GOP base was "car guys".

Sadly, magical solutions are part of the American culture. How much money do consumers spend on fad diets? Certainly, many are hoping that global warming, social security, and the energy crisis will take car of themselves.

I am reminded of the Bush press conference in which it was stated that Americans won't have to sacrifice anything while the country wages war in the Middle East - yet more Republican magic.

user-pic

Here's the thing about the traditional GOP - it used to be dominated by very rich people - it kind of changed hands over to the Religious Right, actually, during Bush's time - although the wealthy love his tax cuts. Under Bush, the GOP started alienating quite a few of the very rich who got nervous over the economy and the size of the deficit. That is the traditional GOP base and they've lost a lot of those people. Those people who aren't stupid woke up and they saw: a war they don't like, the economy going sideways and a deficit that is really panic-inducing. Those are the old Repugs who now are not voting Repug - and there are a bunch of them and some of them don't admit that.

The GOP isn't raising money this time, period. They are in trouble financially - amost of the reports have been candid about that. A few come in and muddy the waters with spikes in donations here and there. But if you pull back a little bit and look at the big picture - the GOP knows it is in terrible trouble. The GOP candidates are not raising money like they used to.

Anyone who listens to McLame's bullshit and gives him money for it has to be one of the GOP's core: low information voter.

I think that part of the McCain strategy involves getting the Obama campaign to erupt in anger over their little nit picks and infantile attacks. Then they can say, "Do you want an angry black man in the Oval Office?"

I think that the Obama campaign should congratulate McCain on taking the intiative to send their supporters pressure gauges and cite Arnold and Bill as proponents of Barack's recommendation.

Finally, one thing that Obama used to do very well in the early part of the primaries (and doesn't do as well now) is to use opponents' words against them. He has become less deft at it now.

I think it's a wakeup call to liberals who have been sitting on their hands complacently or stewing over Obama's various stances.

As the past few weeks has made clear, McCain is no mdoerate. He's a classic GOP rigthwing thug. Everything progressives hold dear is doomed under Bush III.

Take home message: get to work!

user-pic

Co-sign.

Maybe McCain should promise to send them a barrell of sweet light crude from the magical offshore drilling wells he's proposing. Or a barrell of nuclear waste from the 40+ nuclear power plants he's proposing.

Are these fools watching Obama's energy speech? He's killing that tire gauge mess and discussing details you'd never hear from McCain.

Obama says no foreign oil in 10 years!

user-pic

For years people asked why Bush didn't take advantage of the worlds support after 9/11 by asking people to conserve their energy consumption, join a community service, join the military - instead he told people to "go shopping".

Just as during the depression, Americans were asked to conserve sugar - Obama asks Americans to not only save them selves money, but to help to curb the need for foreign oil - by airing their tires on the their cars.

A minor step - but a valid one.

user-pic

You'd think the "conservation is a virtue" GOP would like a suggestion like this that doesn't cost taxpayer money...

user-pic

"Conservation" as a virtue flew right out the window the minute Commander Coocoo Bananas stepped across the threshold of the Oval Office.

That's why a lot of traditional old line Repugs aren't voting Repug anymore - though a lot of them will not admit that.

My God, Obama's energy speech is mesmerizing. He got all up in McCain's ass with no vaseline.

If the GOP thought energy independence was going to be their thing this election, they got another thing coming.

==He got all up in McCain's ass with no vaseline.==

Aaaaah! I just got out of the shower from your last comment! Back in I go. Must get picture out of head.....

That was my reaction as well. As a literary device, that particular turn of phrase did little to win me over to the author's point of view. Very gross...

Yeah, MO Voter! We could use more thoughtful comments- like yours :)

Glad you liked Obama's speech though, Michael.

You are, as ever, too kind, dear Joseph. It is always a pleasure to converse with both yourself and Tena.

user-pic

O Missouri - are you really that faint of heart?

I thought it was well put, myself.

But everyone knows by now how I tend to use words. ;)

Oh, I like me some trash talking too. Call me crazy but McCain's lubed up ass offends my gay sensibilities! :)

It takes all sorts to make the world go round (or so my grandmother tells me). I am glad that the scatological works for some, but I am afraid that I really am as feeble as all that. Suffice it to say, however, I will live to tell the tale.

LOL. Just as funny as the last one.

...and donate!!

And if you have a vulnerable incumbent Republican senator- do everything you can to get them out of there, as well!

....can be used for good, or for bad. I typed "good", I really did. what the...?!

Apparently, the reply button means nothing today.

Just ignore the above.

user-pic

So are "Tire Gauges" the "Purple Heart Band-Aids" this time around?

When Obama is asked about this, he should simply say that he hopes those that receive them use them... and maybe his campaign should consider sending them out as well. Remind reporters that it does work and to use the plublicity to educate the public.

user-pic

Exactly right. Have his campaign hand them out.

Thanks, Rick Davis! Great idea!

There is no way they're going to run with this attack, I'm betting that it was already dropped.

$25 for a pressure gauge? Are they nice ones? Because I need one.

The Nascar crowd will love this.. With the Chase for the Cup heating up, White Men at the track will get a 'revv' out of it.

Half of Nascar is racing and the other half is tires and tire pressure. This thing will play to the appropriate market..

What are you talking about?

Any NASCAR fan knows that Obama's comment was reasonable. It seems to me that McCain is trying to find a way to signal to every demographic that he is, somehow, actually dumber than Bush.

Ah, McCainanites. :)

Stop and look at this pitch: They're requesting funds with the promise of a free gift. A gift that has their competitor's name emblazoned on it. (if i could post the pic from the email... it's priceless). A joke predicated on a demonstrably false assertion that even those receiving will have forgotten about by the time they actually ship.

This works as an illustrative device on so many levels I can scarcely keep track. Anyone who manages to get their hands on one - this will be EBay gold in under 100 days ;)

user-pic

Welcome back!

And that's a good point. People will be walking around with "Obama" priming them nonconsiously....good job for our side, Rick Davis!

Agreed :) If I wasn't aware of Davis' history, I'd consider their Keystone Candidate schtick a sign of some sort of insurgency within McCain's camp, lol.

Ok, if this is marketed to the Nascar crowd, do you really think seeing his face every time i check my pressure is going to subliminally woe them over?

For the target demographic, at best it will give them a chuckle.. At worst(dealing from the bottom of deck) Obama's picture will stir up fear and resentment with white men.

Excepting that it's being "marketed" to anyone and everyone on McCain's listservs: this is loose shot, not a bullet, and demos don't apply in any sort of rigid sense. From a marketing standpoint, everything beyond the name on the device is temporal (and lest I gave the impression - Obama's likeness does not appear - just his name) and relies on an all-too-flimsy conceptual basis to even work in the intended context. You're left with what it is the first time you see it without the 2-paragraph explanation that accompanies it: a tire gauge that says Obama on it. In exchange for a donation to McCain.

Reading in anything beyond that is pure Tea-Leaf territory, and giving Davis & Co. far more credit than they deserve. It's the sort of root message management blunder that would be considered Actionable in any other circumstance/enterprise: far too easy to flip into a message to the effect of McCain can't raise money on his own name, so he's adopted his competitor's branding. In Simpson's Parlance, Senator McCain = "Sorny" or "Panaphonics" in this case.

The context being what is it, however - I'm hoping it gives rise to calls for Davis & Co to see a raise ;)

The NASCAR 'crowd' knows that Obama's comments were true and that regular maintenance can dramatically improve your mileage.

It seems to me like this is marketed towards "the complete idiot" crowd. In other words, the media and right-wing bloggers.

Hey, a month ago, I bought a new tire gauge and pulled out the old air compressor to make sure all my tires are inflated correctly.

Why? To improve fuel efficiency in the face of rising gasoline prices.

OBTW, you can get a fancy gauge at WalMart for way under $25.

Barack should say, "Hey, everybody who brought your tire gauge, hold 'em up! That's what I'm talking about. Use one of these and you will save money and help reduce our dependence on foreign oil. Thanks for bringing those."

The problem that McCain has after launching the attacks is that he can't go back to issues. What he is going to do? His plan on energy is drill, drill, drill and the nuclear option will cause him some problems (the waste disposal issue). The Obama ad today is good because he attacks McCain on issues. It is not just offensive, but the right offensive.

The national polls are irrelevant now, it's about the states and the ground game (organization) that eventually decides this election.

P.D.: In the Lansins speech, he mention the creation of more "Union Jobs". This is not coincidence, just look the WashPost poll today. The unions could be a tipping point in places like Michigan and Ohio. He must use that.

It's Lansing. My apologies to that town.

McCain: Big Oil First

user-pic

Big Oil First is right.

I hope the subject of the post above this one makes it into the MSM -

That speech was frickin' brilliant. Do yourself a favor and try to watch it.

Obama should take the bait and invite AAA experts to debunk GOPs argument

user-pic

Prime Obama from today's speech:

"What Senator McCain neglected to mention was that during those thirty years, he was in Washington for twenty-six of them. And in all that time, he did little to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. He voted against increased fuel efficiency standards and opposed legislation that included tax credits for more efficient cars. He voted against renewable sources of energy. Against clean biofuels. Against solar power. Against wind power. Against an energy bill that – while far from perfect – represented the largest investment in renewable sources of energy in the history of this country. So when Senator McCain talks about the failure of politicians in Washington to do anything about our energy crisis, it’s important to remember that he’s been a part of that failure."

Makes the whole tire gauge thing look even more stupid and petty.

Yes, but will MSM cover this? Who is going to point this out to folks who do not follow the minutae of the campaing?

You might want to ask your State representative energy conservation? How much gas, oil and electricity we could save, if we sent illegal aliens packing.
We cannot keep up the demand for it right now! Oil! Diversity Alliance for Sustainable America.(earthtimes) stated in it's article that if the U.S. grants amnesty and gives citizenship to 12 to 30 million illegal migrants already here, as McCain, Obama and the majority of Democrats propose.

That all those naturalized citizens could possibly add 120 million U.S. and foreign-born relatives to the U.S., in the next 20 years whom all will CONSUME MAJOR ENERGY. Does the American people need to escalate the 315 million plus population, the census estimates we have now? To a new total of 435 million?

The executive director of (DASA) admitted "Proposal to reduce energy costs in the U.S. will not work unless we also simultaneously curb U.S. population growth by reducing immigration and curbing teen pregnancies." Severing the illegal immigration occupation and deporting those already here is a good start, but not the complete solution to this serious energy problem that cannot be reversed.

Unless another Nikola Tesla, an underrated genius of the 19th century invents a some new form of energy, we will be reliant on fossil fuels for years to come? Clean coal, geothermal, eco-fuel and of course wind power and solar. The latter is energy that is a perpetual source of unimaginable power that knows no bounds.

I swear the man thinks he is running for class president and not POTUS. And if that's not bad enough, he's proven that his age really is a factor. Did anyone catch his non answer (literally) to the question from the audience down in Panama City? He is simply not up to the task.

"He is simply not up to the task"

That may be true, but his new (Rove disciples) campaign staff is up to the task of tearing down Obama. They take some little thing he says every day, blow it up, get the media to talk about it, and then move on to the next one. It doesn't make any difference whether they are true, false, silly or whatever. The low information voters, who are nervous about the guy who doesn't look like the pole on the currency, buy into it.

I thought Obama had set up a counterattack operation, but I haven't seen much sign of it. Instead Obama seems to think he can debunk the McCain attack machine with sweet reason. But the McCain attack is not about reason or truth or intelligence. The ony way to counter it is to go after McCain just as hard as his campaign goes after Obama. Every time he makes one of his gaffes, hit him hard. Remind people about dumping his first wife for a multi-millionaire trophy wife; remind people about his terrible temper; remaind people about all his flip flops in order to win the Republican niomination; etc, etc. In other words make people afraid of McCain having his finger on the nucler button.

Here are my thoughts on the counterattack thing.

1. Hardly anyone is paying attention right now. They have all the material they need to fire back in their own time.

2. Have some faith. Far be it for me to second guess the campaign that just took down the Clinton dynasty. They have a plan.

3. These folks would make excellent fishermen or hunters. They have a lot more patience than I have to give their opponents enough rope to hang themselves with. You don't think that McCains mud slinging won't have an impact on his negatives?? It's hard to watch but very effective.

I don't think that's necessarily true, especially for younger car owners. I don't know why I'm supposed to do half the things my manual tells me to do, and if I'm strapped for time or money, I might choose to skimp on some things. We don't live in a world where everyone's dad taught him how to change the oil. Not anymore.

Oh, and speaking of raising $ -- it's Obama's birthday today, and many people are donating to the campaign.
Here's the page at Daily Kos

Or here's Barack Obama's website

...if you've got any money burning a hole in your pocket.

So, the Obama campaign drops the Oil commercial and then leaks the Hess scoop to TPM.

Which shows that they probably have something cooking for a counter-punch to the "celebrity meme" - a big oil sell-out or something like that.

What I want to know is how he can deliver the knock-out without opening himself to the flip-flopper charge on FISA/Drilling and the Bush/Cheney bill.

Hmm, there you go with those paranoid conspiracy theories. Did you forget to take your lithium this morning?

didn't the old guy just admonish everyone to wear their sunscreen? DNC should send out bottles of 30spf labeled "McCain's Healthcare Plan."

If McCain wants to make an issue out of this, Obama's campaign should pull out the numbers to show how pointless McCain's push for offshore drilling is:

If everyone in the US properly inflated their tires it would save around 20 billion gallons of fuel per year, every year.

In contrast, opening every square mile of offshore areas to drilling would produce 2 billion gallons of oil per year, starting in 2020 (according to the Department of Energy's optimistic estimate).

Ain't just McCain. At the Fancy Farm Picnic political speech-off this weekend in Kentucky, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell spent his entire time saying Barack Hussein's energy plan was to inflate your tires.

He even had props - gas pumps with "Republican Plan to Drill Now - $2.49 per gallon" "Barack Hussein Plan to Raise Prices Gradually - $7.49 per gallon."

McConnell's an ass, but this is catching on.

I heard Obama has already reached decision on his VP pick. Is it going to be Evan Bayh? This is going to be a winning combination in the whole Mid West (Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, and Ohio)

I think it's a real possibility. Bayh is a Clinton golden boy as well, and was very likely Hillary's VP pick should she have won the nomination.

Bayh has been running for president his whole life, so the belief is is that he's squeaky clean, almost to the point of being too clean (have some fun for crissakes).

It's too bad this story got buried. Hopefully there is an attack ad using it tomorrow.

user-pic

THAT'S BRILLIANT!!!

That's the best gimmick that Obama could do! Hand them out all over the place, no charge, show up at the campaign stop or at a 'obamaenergyplan.com' website!

Picture the speech:

"And while my opponent is proposing answers that may help the American consumer in a few DECADES, I am proud to help people reduce their gas consumption TODAY! Come to my website and see what I propose to do about our energy problem!"

Obama is on the right track calling for Americans to keep tires properly inflated.

Americans CAN do something about the energy crisis. With everyone working together to solve the problem, even something that seems little, like proper tire inflation, can grow to a savings of $ 14 billion a year, which doesn’t seem small at all.

Tires will stay properly inflated even longer with high-purity nitrogen.

High-purity nitrogen is more stable than compressed air. This allows tires to stay properly inflated longer and leads to increased gas mileage, improved tire life and reduced carbon emissions. High-purity nitrogen also can provide a safer ride, with better handing and stability.

PurigeN98TM high-purity nitrogen guarantees results. Check us out at: www.purigen98.com/bluegas.htm
