McCain Campaign Launches Direct Hit On Obama Over Ayers Ties

The McCain campaign has just seized on Obama's response to the third-party Ayers spot to launch a direct attack on Obama's ties to the former Weatherman.

From McCain spokesperson Brian Rogers:

"The fact that Barack Obama chose to launch his political career at the home of an unrepentant terrorist raises more questions about Senator Obama's judgment than any TV ad ever could. And the fact that he's launching his own Convention by defending his long association with a man who says he didn't bomb enough U.S. targets tells us more about Barack Obama than any of tonight's speeches will."

That's effectively an endorsement of the tactic used in the Swift-Boating Ayers spot (recall that McCain has said he wants a "civil" campaign but that he can't control such third-party activity).

It's also a gloves-off declaration that the McCain team will cheerfully do whatever it can to ensure that Ayers is an issue in the campaign.

G Gordon Liddy anyone?

Randy Scheunemann (who seems to have had a hand in every American foreign policy cock-up since 2001, although we all know him for being Chalabi's PR guy) would also work.

user-pic

Hell, do a whole series: 'John McCain's Friends'

Charlie Keating
Liddy
Schueneman
Charlie Black
Vicki Iseman
Hagee
Chalabi
The guy who bankrolled this ad

And there's probably a lot more where that came from.

I like it! McCain's list of Losers is certainly longer than Obama's! I mean, if we're gonna the guilt by association game, nothing can stink like a republican list of 'friends'!

user-pic

How about Oliver North?

But in August? And they aren't even trying to hide their connection to the swiftboating?

Isn't this really nothing more than a short term strategy? Have we learned nothing from the primary about short term versus long term thinking?

They're not distancing themselves from it because there has been absolutely ZERO backlash so far. The media does not call McCain on it, and the public does not seem to care.

The McCain camp will continue to directly voice this type of message because it will have more credibility as compared to a 527.

I know you're concerned, but seriously, this is a double edged sword for McCain. This kind of stuff has a short term boost for the attacker. But once you run out of these smears you have no more boosts left for the last week of the campaign. What do you do, run this again?

And look at what it does to McCain. His brand is in tatters. Maverick? Respectful campaign? Moderate? The anti-Rove?

Poof.

Gone.

I'm not actually concerned. I am glad McCain is doing this because it spurs Obama to get more aggressive.

I disagree with your assessment of his image hit though. His image will only be ruined if the MSM starts running stories like "McCain, Maverick No More?" and "McCain, Big Fat Liar?!"

Don't assume that. People form their opinions on their own. Exhibit A would be the public turning on Bush and the Iraq War long before the media did.

Undermining your brand is bad for a candidate. People already widely see McCain as running a dirty campaign. That hurts. And what happens is that these smears lose their punch after being repeated enough times.

And the answer is so obvious. "Obama was eight years old". It sounds funny. Easy to say. Makes McCain look petty and desperate.

Watch for a bounce for Obama.

I hope you are correct. However, adding to your Exhibit A, it took 6 years, 4000 dead soldiers and a craptastic economy for people to turn on Bush.

user-pic

Lather, repeat. Rove did it and it worked.

Yes it is indeed.

As I mentioned in the previous post, Obama should treat the 527s and the McCain campaign as one and the same. Voters should not see any distinction. Their slime is McCain's slime.

That's what they're doing. But $3mil buys you a good bit of slime.

user-pic

Hmmm, seems McCain's campaign is coordinating with his 'mad dog' 527s a little too closely, no?

user-pic

Nobody cares; that's what makes Obama's 527 stance so stupid.

user-pic

It does make it more difficult for sure. Like boxing with ankle weights while the other guy can dance around.

user-pic

"Dance" might be a bit strong in this case.

user-pic

heh heh. Ok, hobble around. Maybe the other guy isn't as spry as he used to be.

"Direct Hit on Obama"??

Eh, not so much.

Agreed. It's an attempt to smear Obama, not to mention an endorsement of the slimy swiftboaters, but a "hit"? Nah.

user-pic
And the fact that he's launching his own Convention by defending his long association with a man who says he didn't bomb enough U.S. targets tells us more about Barack Obama than any of tonight's speeches will."

WTF is he talking about? How is mentioning that John McCain is obsessed with the 60s the same as "defending his long association" (in itself a lie)?

I guess that they must not like the response ad of the Obama campaign.

And I guess that means we can expect more of the "John McCain keeps talking about Britney, Paris and the 1960s, while I'm trying to help out the average American...."

For once, I'd like to see Democrats push back hard, and mean, on this bullshit out of the Republicans.

user-pic

The '68 Democratic Convention has been a gift that has kept giving for 40-years. Why would they stop now.

I think we're in the middle of a paradigm shift, however. Much as the red-baiting that Clinton endured in 1992, this seems a bit stale. But Obama must fight it.

user-pic

"The fact that John McCain as an elected official aided a crook whose savings and loan ultimately cost America $160 billion raises more questions about McCain's judgment than a TV ad ever could."

http://strategy08.wordpress.com

Yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes yes.

As soon as the convention is over, it's time for a 30 second spot about the Keating Five. *And* McCain's more recent involvement with lobbyists. They should include a picture of Vicki Iseman to illustrate that involvement.

We don't have to allege any liaison -- she's just an example of another lobbyist who's had undue influence over him, while the needs of the American people are ignored. Let the f*****g MSM debate whether the picture is supposed to mean anything else.

user-pic

Word up.

The S & L scandal, although old, will be powerful. It directly corresponds to the current mortgage crisis that has cost homeowners a lot of capital.

I'm pretty confident that we're going to see this ad -- the Keating Five/lobbyist theme is too obvious for us not to use it. The only question is whether we do it in Sept or Oct.

Can't some enterprising young men and women put that ad together NOW? It could go VIRAL in 24 hours....

I would say at the convention. This is when it will be easiest to tie John to the Repubs and their lack of concern except for the wealthiest. And then just keep repeating through Nov K5, K5, K5 in everything else that is produced: "...and this is like the John involved in K5," "...this reminds me of K5"

user-pic

Why wouldn't they directly support the attack? This 527 group is a group made up of one person, that person answers to McCain. This isn't moveon.org for goodness sake.

This means WAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

user-pic

Maybe McCain's people think this has staying power, or are thinking of it as an introduction to the Rev. Wright attacks.

In any event, it gives the impression that his campaign is flailing away without a long range plan.

Democrats on MSM shows need to use stuff like this as evidence that McCain is lying - and I wouldn't shy away from using that word - when he says he's not questioning Obama's patriotism and would prefer to run an honest campaign centered around real issues.

user-pic

Such a strategy might not have much of a direct effect on voter preferences, but it could be a big positive if it shakes up the McCain character apologists in the MSM.

user-pic

"I'm not questioning McCain's patriotism when I say that he's a bald-faced liar. "

user-pic

we are facing serious challenges and this is a time for serious people and a serious debate. We need a debate thats as big as the challenges we face, not the same small, petty, he's corrupt because someone he served on a charity board did something really bad a long time ago.

John McCain is NOT PUTTING HIS COUNTRY first when he brings up a 60's radical who did horrible things when Obama was 8 years old and didn't know the man.

John McCain is putting himself and his ambition first.

Let's talk about issues, huh, Senator McCain? Let's talk about Iraq, and Afghanistan. Let's talk about the 200,000 homeless veterans. Let's talk about how to fix the health care system in this country. Let's talk about energy policy.

If you did that, then maybe i might buy into your rhetoric of "country first". But keep mentioning ayers, rezco and wright, and that's all that it will be: Rhetoric.

I like it but you need to work in at least one "housing" reference.

Yeah Greg, leave the clumsy hyperbole to Eric - "Direct Hit"? Come on..

To be fair, he may be referencing the source of the attack rather than the damage to the target.

user-pic

come on -- "direct hit" in the sense that the mccain campaign is pinning ayers directly to obama

My bad greg..

So you mean a Direct ATTACK?

That would be less confusing.

By the way, for those concerned about the Obama campaign's ability to launch effective attacks against McCain, this week's Economist piece on David Alexrod should give you some comfort:

Some Democrats worry that he is not prepared to hit John McCain hard enough. This seems unlikely. Mr Axelrod is a product of Chicago’s street-fighting school of politics. Ed Rollins, a veteran Republican strategist, puts him at the head of his list of “Guys I never want to see lobbing grenades at me again”.

link

I think Obama has a bunker full of ammunition and is just waiting for the right moment to take the shot.

user-pic

Obama needs to let Axelrod work his magic - it seems he's starting to do that as the housing gaffe was the first attack on McCain that wasn't in response to a McCain attack on Obama. We need more of this.

Well now the real McCain shows his face. Obama should continue to hit back but stick to the issues that voters care about.

If McCain wants to bring in associations then lets talk about Phil Gramm and his "Nation of whiners". Hit McCain's character by both his policies and his inability to take about issues that affect voters lives.

McCain has to make up his dirt. We don't.

user-pic

The truth is devastating - McLame is an awful person. He left his sick wife for his filthy rich "cunt" - he wants everyone to give him everything he wants because he spent 5 years in a Vietcong jail and that's the only criteria he uses to get what he wants: Be nice to me, I suffered.

Fuck McLame and fuck his billionaire buddies who are nothing more than Nazi filth.

McCain was a POW, he can say anything he wants.

McCain is Batman. POW. POW! POW!!!

user-pic

In my mind the funniest use of the POW excuse was when McCain defended his love of ABBA by with the POW defense. Basically McCain loved the music he knew before he was taken prisoner.

Why is this funny? ABBA didn't get together until 1972, long after McCain had crashed (another) plane.

user-pic

I like the idea of hitting him with Charles Keating. After all McCain was actually chastised by the Senate at the time. At the same time go after McCain's foreign policy judgment by linking him to Chalibi. Just poor it on. End the campaign with a rerun of the daisy ad.

I am not saying this with glee, but to put an end to the Rovettes. Force the Republicans to understand that scorched earth goes both ways.

Oh, man, I wish that would put an end to it.

Scorched earth only gets you more scorched earth. It doesn't ever "teach the other side a lesson." It just teaches them to shoot first, with a bigger gun. I think we're going to have to do it, but it sucks.

Just announced on MSNBC, Cindy McCain is going to Georgia as a tit for tat of Biden having gone.

user-pic

You are joking, aren't you?

That what you say seems even remotely plausible is a tribute to the demonic neocon ability to make up seem down to so many people.

He's not kidding. Cindy is going there to buy some more houses.

I'm sure that's not all. Private jet really is the only way to get around those cute little democratic start-ups.

user-pic

Yeah, but she is going to steal thier presecription drugs.

user-pic

By far the dumbest idea the McCain campaign has had yet.

OTOH, it's only August.

user-pic

You mean as in Atlanta, Georgia? Cindy McLame has no business in Ukraine - who the hell is she?

Here is how Obama should respond:

Last November, John McCain appeared on G. Gordon Liddy's talk show.

(McCain): "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."

So what principles and philosphies could these be?

G. Gordon Liddy was convicted for his role in the Watergate breakin in the 70's. Certainly breaking and entering isn't a very good principle.

(Liddy):"If the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms insists upon a firefight, give them a firefight. Just remember, they're wearing flak jackets and you're better off shooting for the head."

Is suggesting murdering a federal officer a great principle?

The question is, why is John McCain praising and anti-government radical? Why is John McCain willingly associating with this kind of radical?

Okay, I like that.

Seconded

user-pic

I really think that Obama knows he has a path to winning in November that doesn't involve living down in the gutter. When it comes to scumbag politics, Obama is a counter-puncher.

Sullivan's blog has an interesing bit - it seems that Obama's polling shows that a large number of Hillary supporters voters supposedly voting for McCain have no idea that McCain is anti-choice. So, does Obama spend his time and effort down in the gutter or does he make sure that he outlines to non-blogging, non-PUMA registered Hillary Democrats that McCain has a horrible voting record on women's rights?

It is a good day when your guy is leading for 4 months and his biggest challenge is to get people within his own party to vote for him.

I'm hoping that one of their main strategies during the Repub Convention is an ad focusing that John flipped on his previous battle to get the abortion platform changed, which currently says no abortion even for rape and incest. Now he's okay with it.

Why not do both? Let us not forget the lessons that Kerry taught us.

Btw, it is good that Obama did not hit first. But not that McCain is actively engaging in smear politics, Obama can attack and still be the good guy.

Sure the media won't see it that way at first, but then all Obama has to say is that he did not start the fight but he'll end it. Or better yet, have Biden say it. That has the added benefit of characterizing him as a scrappy fighter which should help with working class white voters.

Oops...

But NOW that McCain is actively engaging in smear politics...

I think it's time to Give Biden a couple of talking points re Keating 5, Lobbyists, G. Gordon Liddy and 'let 'er rip!' Sure, he'll probably have a few miscues, but the zingers man. the zingers!

'Obama was a little kid when this Ayers stuff happened. John went on Liddy's show AFTER he instructed people to take head shots at federal officers for pete's sake! [flash image of bullet hitting watermelon] Let's bring Libby out to Scranton and we'll show him a head shot!'

Hey TPM: Your headlines really suck.

Try this: After you have written your story (post or whatever you call it) let someone else read it and write the headline.

This recurring problem is a blemish on otherwise good work.

Well, they've now officially created all the cover we could ever want to totally unload on them and get no media blame for going negative--always a "problem" the MSM concern trolls liked to talk about.

I really think we have to keep it more or less positive for, oh, say, the next four days or so. However, hopefully, an opportune moment to go medieval on their asses will present itself soon after our convention is over.

But when? That's the question. Hmmmmm. Surely there is some event of some kind coming soon during which a powerful counterattack would be in order. Hmmm. Hmmm. Nothing's coming to mind. Help me out here.

Well, hmm, I'd say during their convention . . . as long as we don't do it the night Bush is speaking. We want everyone to tune in for *that* part.

Don't do it the night McCain is speaking either . . .

What we need is a Katrina ad.

Agreed.

user-pic

YES!

Liddy served 5.5 years in federal prison, how many years did Ayers serve?

Liddy's crime was a crime against democracy. Of course Liddy is probably a right wing hero.

And "direct hit" as in "you sunk my battleship" means McCain scored a decisive blow - at least that's what I was thinking when I clicked on the story.

Same here. The headline is rather misleading.

Well I read that as McCain is now directly engaging in smear politics instead of his more coded attacks.

Agreed. Can we change the headline?

"McCain campaign reiterates discredited Ayers ties"

user-pic

They'll say Ayers got off on a "technicality" so he never went to prison.
So did winger hero Oliver North.

If landing in Georgia involves avoiding sniper fire, I know someone Cindy can talk to.

http://pufferfish.typepad.com/

Check out Halperin's response to Obama's ad:

Ballsy: Hits McCain, even though the Ayers attack ad to which this is a response was run by an outside group.

Isn't he cute!?

If you translate that, it means "shit, this guy doesn't scare as easily as the last one."

When was the last time a Dem candidate was referred to as ballsy?

During the primaries, she was.

user-pic

Cute.

Watch out or you'll get Jesse Jackson all excited.

Yea and if McCain can't control the GOP message now, then how are any of his mavericky powers suppose to keep them in line if he becomes president. Seems to me that line of thought concedes that little would change if McCain gets into office.

Is there a reason so many of the ads on this site are anti-Obama? Is it just a coincidence?

Those ads are a Direct Hit on TPM readers!

time to hit McCain hard on

and Keating 5 - or as Ozzinny put it:

And 13 houses; not 7, not 8 - 13.

And calling his wife a "cunt" and by god, she dresses like one. Kind of wish Maureen Dowd would go off on that.

And BUSH

The timing here is the key of McCan't's running these absurb ads..they want to draw away from the DNC as much as possible..this ad...Hillary fantics bullshit...it's the goal to drive Obama supporters into a frenzy...change the story for the stupid pundits...and spend his money before he goes on public campaign funds...

I can hear Biden loading his gun and let's have the democratic party come out strong for Obama...

Timing is everything.

Time will bring us a lot of rope-a-McDope and, of course, barackarate!!

Someone needs to dig up some footage of McCain's Keating 5 testimony before Congress. I've heard it's a trainwreck.

My faith is that Obama's people have this stuff edited and ready to go. My guess - we'll see the first one on Day One of the Repub Convention.

I wasn't aware Obama "launched" his political career in the home of Ayers. I understand there was a small fund raiser there, but is that where he literally launched his political career? If not, then let's call them on it. Just as the Rezko-Obama house deal was in no way illegal, or even unethical.

And as I recall, they served together on two boards. We need some testimony from other board members as to why they chose to sit on the same board as this "terorrist".

Time for Obama to run the Hagee-McCain ads that can target the Catholic Vote :-)

rim-shot!

Nice. And then we can have Biden speaking as a Catholic: "I am pesonally disappointed in John when he sought out Hagee's endorsement. This is not the John I remember."

user-pic

Let Obama give a killer acceptance speech. One that comes out
gives details of what he wants to accomplish. Then, let's floood the airways with Ads asking why the McCain camp isn't telling the America exactly what McCain will do...And something that does work is telling the AMerican people that they're smart enough to know when they're being hoodwinked (since if you don't tell them, then they do let themselves be hoodwinked)"Where's The Beef, Senator". Don't whine, Obama....go directly to the public: Why won't John McCain tell you about his vision, his ideas, and specific about what he intends to do?

Of course I lose the crippled wife and whore myself to a rich floozy and run an incredibly ugly, morally bankrupt campaign! I was a POW!

...

Being a POW means never having to say you're sorry.

...

A POW is a POW is a POW.

...

O McCain, McCain! Wherefore art thou POW?

[...]

O, be some other name.
What's in a name? That which we call a POW
By any other name would smell as sweet;
So McCain would, were he not POW call'd.

user-pic

They won't mention Hagee....fear of Wright being raised again...though you just know it's coming. As well, on the other side, of clips of McCain unable to answer questions....etc etc. It's going to get nasty. But I still think that unless McCain switches tactics, use the line of attacking why McCain is relying on attack Ads. With the theme that he has nothing else to offer. And America can no longer afford a do nothing Presidency...etc etc.
Oh,yes, when is someone going to come out and flat out call McCain a LIAR over things he's said in Ads about Obama and taxes?

I'd have a Hagee ad ready but sitting on the shelf as a counter attack to Wright. If, when McCain plays that card, stick him like super glue to Hagee.

Man, the entire McCain camp peaked WAY too early. They didn't wait at all to unleash the heavy ammo, they just shot their biggest round now.

But, it's just so fucking lame! I laugh at these ads as their desperation just stinks to heaven.

Once again, McCain is proving to the American people
that he cannot sell himself at all; instead he tries to tear down the other guy hoping to get the "I'm not the other guy" vote. But it will fail.

user-pic

McNasty's premature ejaculation. He's gonna need some strong Viagra to keep it up until November.

I think they have to attack early, because we're ahead, and if we got too far ahead, the "inevitability" thing would kick in and smother them.

It doesn't seem to be a big risk right now. But as Ambinder is saying, all we really need is another 5% of registered Democrats to fall in line. That's pretty achievable.

http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/08/this_convention_really_is_abou.php

Why spend our time here complaining amongst ourselves? John McCain's senate office provides many ways to get a message directly to the man responsible for these smears.

He must not have been a very good pilot if the VC could shoot him down like that.

McCain just wants to be president, that's all.

Is McCain aware that he has serious personal problem the democrats will bring up?

VICKI
JANET LAURENCE-MCCAIN
CINDY'S HALF-SISTERS
KEATING FIVE
HAGEE
LOBBYIST CONNECTIONS TO TERRORIST

How can McCain put America first when he associates with the Iranian spy Ahmed Chalabi?

Ok, so conventional wisdom around here is jump as deep inthe mud as possible. May work. McCain has a lot to attack. Ultimately i think it does not work.

McCain has now committed himself fully to a nasty, personal, mocking campaign based on lies and perverse misrepresentations. Everything come out formthem flies directly inthe face of every representation McCain has ever made about runnig na campaign the American people could be proud of. he has permanently sullied his brand with this garbage.

So who can call him out on it. JOe Klein. I don;t think so. Chris mathews. Please.

If Obama does it then people will say he is whining, and not strong, etc....

In fact the one person who can call him out on it is Joe Biden.

Joe: I have known Senator McCain for 30 years. John McCain is a good friend of mine. He was an honorable decent man who really wanted our politics to live up to the seriousness of our national purpose. But you, Mr. candidate you are no John McCain. YOu have dishonoered everything you have worked for.

Well I'll leave the real words to Biden who can speak them from the heart better than I can make them up.

This is potentially a very powerful weapon.

Absolutely. In fact, Biden already started this line of attack in his introduction speech on Saturday. John McCain has betrayed his own principles by the way he had chosen to campaign and by aligning himself with people like Rove. I think we will hear a lot about this from Biden. And the beauty is, the more shit McCain throws - and you know he will throw a lot - the more the Biden attack will resonate.

Just to follow up -- there's a lawsuit now, and a letter-writing campaign coordinated by Obama-Biden '08.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0808/12816.html

This is a good sign. They're scared and resorting to extremely ridiculous arguments.

Well this sure got everyone in a tizzy. Clear your heads.

Probably the dumbest thing Obama could do in response to this would be to bring up McCain's associates. This is not the time. Trying to argue that the other guy is an even greater asshole than you are is a losing proposition.

This is one of the cases needing simply a fast, forceful, truthful rebuttal. You all seriously think the campaign has not planned for this way in advance?

Wonder if Obama knows any of those old '68 mayor Daly thugs?

I think Obama should put out an ad with a female Hillary supporter saying "After Hillary lost the nomination, my friends were talking about how we should send the Democrats a message and just go and vote for McCain. And I was getting all excited about it. Until I started looking at McCain's record -- anti-choice, pro-war, anti environment, more of the same failed Bush policies (etc., etc., etc., etc.). And I thought "is that really the kind of message I want to send?" And then I found out that on all these issue, Barack Obama's positions are exactly the same as Hillary's? Now when my friends come and ask me how I'm going to use my vote to send a message, I tell them: by voting for Barack Obama." And it should end with Barack onscreen saying "I'm Barack Obama" and Hillary should walk into the frame and say "and I'm Hillary Clinton. And we approve this message."

I think it is time to revisit the Keating Five, in big letters. While we are at it, the people of AZ claim that McCain has quite often voted for or earmarked things that actually benefited him personally. I think it is time for an account of this too. Jeezhus, the gloves are off and nothing should be out of bounds if this is where they want it to go.

user-pic

What needs to be said should be said during a debate. Obama needs to look McCain in the eye and tell him that he is a liar and we have already went through seven + years of having a liar in the White House. We cannot afford four more years of lying. Then leave it alone for the rest of the debate. The American public needs to hear this and it needs to be said by Obama to McCain's face. McCain will blow a gasket and the debate will be over for McCain. Perhaps the election for McCain will be over at that point. Needs to be done. Let's put an end to this bullshit. Think this is a civil race? Think again. Putting it in the context of "American's can not afford four more years of lying" is just stating the truth. "Nothing personal" you know.

user-pic

"A direct hit"?? Hyperbole is alive and well....

If this is a "direct hit" then we can all breathe easier.

Greg when did TPM hire the Weekly World News headline copy editor?

user-pic

Obama needs to state and perhaps run an ad informing voters of only one thing about these ads.

Let voters know they are factually false and ask voters to consider if it is acceptable for McCain to lie in this way and then ask them if they want to be lied to for another four years. Lied to in a way, just as Bush lied, that harms their families and the country.

Obama needs to hit hard on this because it is the fundamental feature of all the attack ads. They are all lies. Republicans can do no other because there is no truth that can be told that works in their favor.
