Hillary To Headline Second Night Of Convention
The DNC's committee for the convention announces the dates of two key speakers at the big event: Michelle Obama, and Hillary. From the release:
Monday August 25th's headline prime-time speaker will be Michelle Obama.Senator Hillary Clinton, who is a champion for working families and one of the most effective and empathetic voices in the country today, will be the headline prime-time speaker on Tuesday August 26th.
The headline prime-time speaker on Wednesday August 27th will be Barack Obama's Vice Presidential nominee.
Not that this was in any doubt at all, but this would appear to confirm that Hillary is definitely not Veep. Reports have it that Bill will speak on Wednesday, too.

Not that this was in doubt, but this would appear to confirm that Hillary is definitely not Veep.
By the posts and comments swirling around here on TPM in the past week, you might've thought otherwise.
Though I've known this since the day Obama clinched the nomination, and am in complete agreement with you, Greg.

Add the leaked memos from the Clinton camp during the dog days of August and I think we can expect in the upcoming week for the MSM to spend way to much time on the Clintons.

Darn tootin!
Maybe this is Obama's plan that this be their last hoorah.
Maybe he is big enough and humble enough to know that he does not need to have the convention focus on him being the nominee..but that once he kicks off his speech at Invesco..it will be HIS party and he WILL be President.
Gotta have lots of regard for how big he is being in the face of tremendous scheming, lieing, manipulating and all sorts of backstabbing manuevers.
I think Obama would be more than a match for Putin. Unlike George Dubya who is nothing but Putins pawn with his talk of 'seeing the mans soul' what kind of New Age pap was that? Now Putin is showing his true soul and Bush is doing nothing but sitting on the sidelines and watching Putin regain control of the oil pipeline so he can line up with Iran,
And dumbass McCain is as big of a dolt as Butch with the same daddy complex...both of them are family failures unable to live up to the family name, so they choose to make asses of themselves just to get attention.
ugh..my country...the mases are asses...
sigh

It's still not enough for the Clintonites and PUMAs. The only thing that would satisfy these wackadoos is for Obama to say "here, Hillary. You can have my nomination. It was your turn. Sorry for cutting in line. Forgive me? Pretty please?"

Perhaps he'll make BILL Clinton his VP choice. That way we can have the Supreme Court involved again.

I pity the poor VP choice because Bill is an almost impossible act to follow, and you know he's going to go out of his way to show up the VP choice.
Any word on the keynote address? I'm hoping Ted Kennedy is well enough to give it. It was reported that he taped a video in case he wasn't well enough, but I don't think they'd have a keynote via video.

Bill is hard to follow only because he doesn't know how to STFU.
Have the hook ready. He doesn't know when to stop.

Not only that, but recently his speeches have been, shall we say, unguided missiles?

Wasn't this Hillary-on-Tues announced over a week ago? Same with the "This has been instructive, talking to myself" comment. I read that line long, long ago. Wasn't that leaked soon after the NH primary?

meanwhile, a ploufe email says the VP announcement is coming very soon. Is the VP announcement Obama's plan to keep attention away from McCain while on vacation?

What email? I haven't heard about this!

There's an email coming sooner, or later.
Sign up to get the word before the media. Maybe even before TPM -- but I'm sure they've signed up as well.

Not just an email..you can sign up to receive the announcement on text...send VP to 62262 if you want to be the first to hear about it on text.

Not likely. He's due back Thursday I believe, and I assume will make his announcement the following Monday or Tuesday, so we're probably a week away yet.

"Coming soon" is actually "between now and the convention."
Good to have the email that Barack will announce his veep via text message, though. Keeps the buzz on our side.

"Senator Hillary Clinton, who is a champion for working families and one of the most effective and empathetic voices in the country today, will be the headline prime-time speaker on Tuesday August 26th."
Sorry but this description of Hillary made me choke... talk about sugar coated bs.
Whatever... let her talk and get it over with...
Hopefully Bill will be introducting the VP and I am sure with Senator Obama's help his VP will have a great speech to offer.

If you really think about it..it must be gettin under Bill's skin that he WILL introduce the Veep and it isn't Hill?! lol, lol, Bill is seething. He knows he has to be gracious and do his part for party unity and appear to help the party win even if he is dragging his heels, kicking and screaming the whole darn time.
Pretty smart move on Obama's part.

The question is, can he stay on topic? Recently, he's prone to say whatever he's really thinking, which is both a blast of fresh air (honesty, really?!) and a potential land mine:
"and now, without further ado, I introduce the new bastard candidate for vice president, Senator Evan Bayh. Um, what did I just say?"
Hold on to your hats!

Obama to announce his VP choice via email and text - http://twitter.com/BarackObama/statuses/883563719
I assume he'll have an official unveiling as well, probably a second before the person takes the stage they'll hit "send" to text and email in bulk...
I don't think there is any way he can possibly keep this secret until his unveiling because all the main players will be virtually stalked to know their whereabouts at all times in order to try and break the story.

This was probably released because McCain will get a lot of "Who is his VP?" coverage the next couple of days because he is touring Pennsylvania with Tom Ridge.
August 10, 2008 9:52 PM | Reply | Permalink
An argument, I think, for the announcement actually *being* made via e-mail and text. Probably at the same time announcing a joint appearance early the following day. Would that cut down the coverage of the joint appearance? Not really, I'd think. And I get the feeling that Obama really HATES the idea of being scooped. - So odd and unusual it's unlikely, but wouldn't be the first odd and unlikely thing he's done. And just likely enough we'll all (including the press) be checking our e-mails frequently.

Sorry -- in case it's unclear I meant the fact that the press will be all over prospective VPs and their travel arrangements.

Could you repeat that? It is unclear Elizabeth2..are you saying the press will be looking at folks schedule so as to scoop Obama based on who is on his schedule..or what?

Hillary should skip this convention and prepare to face McCain in 2012.
Obama should have front and center his friend, confidant, and supporter John Edwards. Edwards slimed Hillary all during the Campaign, along with Oilbama, and the two are sexist peas in a pod. Oilbama needs to stand behind someone in his past, he has already thrown so many under the bus, and Edwards shares all of Oilbama"s views and should be front and center to continue shilling for the scumbag that is Barack Oilbama.

Hill will have Bill at herside and he is slimier than Edwards. Bill didn't tell Hillary, he denied it and she was public humiliated as FIRST Lady. Did you forget that he had a trail of women into the WH as well. You know Gennifer Flowers who was his Rielle Hunter?
Please Obama having the Clintons periord after their complete national disgrace of the Presidency at the convention says a helluva lot. Edwards is a lot better than Bill. At least Edwards won tons of money as a personal injury lawyer for injured victims. Clinton has not done a darn thing for the poor other than through children and families off welfare to appease the GOP. He left them to starve.

Good. This will let in sink in for everyone. I thought I will have a remote sense of Clinton nostalgia- but not really. Infact, I'm worried if Bill will pull a rabbit or two out of his hat.
Halprin by the way, as Josh Marshall reports, is playing demented Nostradamus.

I think it is smart of the Obama campaign to have sent the email. This email should be reported on the news tomorrow, that will make the media talking for nothing, since they don't have a clue...

While I agree that Hillary Clinton is not the likely VP choice, I don't for a second believe this DNC press release is evidence of that -- if Obama were to choose here, it really wouldn't be that hard to find someone else for the big speech and Tuesday -- changing the speaking line-up isn't really that difficult, is it?
And besides, then Wednesday could be Bill introducing Hillary as VP -- not going to happen, but reading a DNC press release for VP tea leaves is definitely over analyzing.

Sure. And why couldn't she speak twice? Big speech Tuesday, short acceptance speech Wednesday after Bill puts her name in nomination for VP. Then they can burn the building down. Obama is going outdoors for his acceptance speech anyway.

I am with you on this one, Terje. I also think it vanishingly unlikely that Sen Clinton might be chosen as Sen Obama's running mate, but I fail to see how the fact that she has a prominent slot on Tues makes it either more or less likely that she could be the VP nominee. There is no law that says that a candidate cannot speak twice. Besides, everyone keeps positing that this or that "leak" is a "headfake" (first Kaine, then Bayh, etc). If it is possible to think that the day spent campaigning in Indiana with Sen Bayh is a "fake" meant to throw the press off the trail of the real nominee, why is it not possible that the Tues convention slot is not a "fake" meant to do the same?

I find myself asking, the guy is so far ahead in the intangibles (e.g. expected turnout), maybe he could still win even if he picked her?
It would disappoint many, energize Republicans, contradict his change message, but it would bring out a lot of women who chirp "I just like Hillary, it's hard to say exactly why."
What this would do to the Rush Limbaugh culture is too awful to imagine, though. And to me, if I were Obama, I would do almost anything to avoid having Bill at the breakfast table. I might rather lose! Besides, if it were going to be Hillary, the Clintons would know it by now and Bill wouldn't be such a niggling shit when asked whether or not Obama was qualified.

I can't understand the pundits that think Hillary and Bill want to sabotage Obama's nomination, so they can run again in 4 years. I can believe they do not have their heart in a win for him and are pissed off because he twarted her effort to take the WH, but blow it up so they can come back in 4 years? I don't buy it. If they scuttle this nomination and let the Republicans take the WH, she will have to run as an Independent Democrat with Joe Lieberman in 4 years. Her name will be mud in the party, if not already!
August 11, 2008 10:31 AM | Reply | Permalink
I don't understand what you don't understand. Bill is *already* doing this. Didn't you see in an interview the other day he couldn't bring himself to say Obama was qualified? Should be a simple enough question, no? And Hillary wants her name put in nomination and for her nutheads to have a "catharsis" at the convention (and maybe get herself nominated by some fluke or artfulness once her name is in there). What was that shit at the building museum, when she as the loser called Obama "my oponent?" Wasn't that enough catharsis for her creepy supporters?
Right now she is "negotiating" about having all this negative misbehavior included in *Obama's* convention. Why would she be "negotiating" if her purpose was not self-serving and hostile? Or maybe you can explain why she isn't simply SUPPORTING THE NOMINEE????

Anyone have any idea why the candidate's wife is getting a big speaking position? I don't remember anything like that in the past and it makes no sense now.
August 11, 2008 10:38 AM | Reply | Permalink
Sure, it's cuz she's so very special and all, and also her Mutant Army of Wounded Women need (more) "catharsis" as she says. I.E., the convention needs to be about her. Her and Bill. And fuck the election.
I kindly hope that the above is of help, and please do not hesitate to call upon me if I may provide further assistance.

Worst possible choice.
It occurs to me that, assuming Hillary's current polling numbers (OMG, out-polling Obama against McCain!!!!!!!!!!!) are not manufactured, which they undoubtedly are,
that The Hillary has spent several months comfortably out of the GOP crosshairs, while Obama has been the target of the Hillary-designed kitchen sink?
The Clintons have enough baggage to sink several campaigns. But Hillary has no intention of settling for second place. She's campaigning for 2012. Hell, she and Bill and their "supporters" are almost certainly still working for a roll call nomination, and damn the Democratic party, and, for that matter, the country.
If Obama loses this one the Clintons and their DLC will be three for three - they and the corporate establishment that owns them will have undermined the 2000, 2004, and 2008 campaigns.
When this is over, I hope the Clintons, merely by being themselves, will have achieved the irrelevance they deserve.
