Group To Ask Justice Department To Probe McCain's Bundlers
This is interesting: A good government group is set to ask the Justice Department to open a criminal investigation into the two big McCain stories of recent days -- the bundled contributions from Hess executives, and the bundling by Harry Sargeant, the guy who raised cash for McCain from a host of unlikely donors.
The request, which will be made on Monday by Campaign Money Watch, which first flagged the Hess story to us, raises at least the possibility that such a probe could be initiated during the campaign. Barring that, it could keep the stories going in the press a bit.
David Donnelly of Campaign Money Watch confirms to me that they'll make the formal request on Monday, and MoveOn also is demanding a Federal probe in an email that just went out to supporters. Donnelly says that his group's request is being triggered by McCain's letter to the donors whose contributions had been bundled by Sargeant.
Donnelly said that the letter, which advised the donors of the legal ins-and-outs of such contributions, didn't go far enough in trying to determine what had happened.
"What he didn't say was, `Tell us who was responsible for giving you money to give to me, and we'll urge the authorities to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law,'" Donnelly said. "The letter raises the question, 'Is the McCain campaign covering for his bundlers?'"
Asked why Sargeant, whose company holds a huge contract to deliver fuel to military bases in Iraq, merited an investigation, Donnelly said: "An executive from a company that has a billion dollar contract to deliver oil to U.S. bases in Iraq possibly violated election law to funnel contributions to McCain. We think that warrants an investigation."
And on the Hess matter, Donnelly said: "An office manager for an oil company that stands to gain millions in profits from offshore drillingmakes donations for the first time this cycle to McCain, and did it at the same time nine other Hess donors do. That's worth an investigation."
Stay tuned for the next installment.

Actually, this is the biggest story of the day. It should be anyway to get public pressure on the issue.

Too true, I'm afraid - for now anyway.
I agree with everyone who has said: Obama picked a good week to vacation.
Still, Greggy - it's an investigation and you and Erik had a lot to do with this.

Lalo, you're going to have to get in line.
I have Mr. Tena, and then there is the man up in Chimayo who told me two weeks ago that if it was 200 years ago, he'd ride down from the mountains on his horse and steal me.

Obama better be making sure his house is in complete order, because you know the GOP will look for anything to be able to point and say "See, he did it too."

Personally, I prefer this make the news on Monday, when they make the request.
This weekend will be Edwardsapalooza, get it out of their systems. Then they can discuss all these lobbyists McCain is addicted to.
Great work, TPM!

The McCain campaign is not exactly returning the $50K in questionable contributions. Instead it is leaving it to the donors of those contributions to admit that they made contributions in violation of federal law. Here is the McCain letter being sent out to those donors, courtesy of the Washington Post
Yeah, that's the ticket. Let the donors 'fess up
without the campaign having to do any independent investigation.

Finally as the great DemBillc has pointed out all along since the beginning of this campiagn, in his astonishly horrible vote in 2005, Barack Obama chose to side with his lobbyist benefactors over the American people, when he voted FOR the Bush-Cheney Energy bill. Of course Hillary Clinton or John McCain voted against the bill. DemBillC has said repeatedly that he would never vote for Oilbama since he proved he is in the pocket of Big Oil by voting for the worst Energy Bill in History crafted by Dick Cheney and Oil Lobbyists. That alone is reason enough to not nominate Barack Obama. When push comes to shove, Oilbama always sides with same old money men. If every American voter knew that Barack Oilbama voted with Dick Cheney and George Bush on energy and profiteering for big energy companies, they would dump this pretender of Change and Hope. Oilbama is more full of shit than GW Bush. Of course they are both ex Alchoholic Coke heads.

That's the bill that imposed a net increase in taxes on oil companies and dedicated the most money ever to alternative energy right? Sounds pretty good to me. Why don't you like that bill?

McCain has been circumventing campaign finance law from Day One. There's no way this will go anywhere.

Great, glad to see that campaign contributions will be investigated.
Now, will this include the contributions to the Obama campaign from various Middle East folks, Gaza strip, Hamas folks, and other terrorists and terrorist sympathizers?
I know there is a group working on that as well so hopefully all is investigated at the same time and we can let the American people make decisions after the results of all investigations become public.
Thanks for the update! :)

The first rule of politics; don't break a law you cosponsored. First it was McBush's bait and switch on accepting a long based on public funds he never took and now it's the bundler's. I can see why so many Rethuglicans even hate McBush because he is the most sanctimonious a-hole in Congress.
McBush's life has been about doing it wrong first and then being sorry for it.

If McCain is helping to shield his bundlers with illegal contributions and Bush was having falsified documents drawn up to prove his case for war, we should take these instances and consider them like people who break into cars to steal stereos or other such things. These type of criminals might break into ten cars in a night. When they are caught they are charged with one crime, but it stands to reason that these thieves have committed many more crimes than the ones they are being charged. With politicians when a crime is discovered, it should be considered that the crime the politician is caught doing is probably only one of a larger list of crimes perpetrated. We need to take back the word conspiracy and assume that these crimes are common place. The word has come to be associated with mental illness rather than its proper place as a word which describes what happens more often than not in politics and in general when there is a lot of money or power to be had. We need to reverse engineer the history of corruption since Reagan was put into office and make sure similar crimes do not happen again by taking legislative measures. Why didn't Bill Clinton find the people in government who were selling crac k in black neighborhoods to raise money for the Contras? Why was Noriega completely shut up? Do we really believe that this guy committed suicide in the anthrax case?

I can't believe that Amy Silverman's profile of McMajorShit published in the Phoenix New Times News on August 7th has sunk beneath the waves so quickly. It reads as being balanced and presents him in a DEVASTATING light. She has a longtime perspective on his career centering in Arizona and has covered his activities for nearly three decades from Phoenix. After reading it, one understands why the Nancy Reagan endorsement last month was such an ICY affair. Apparently, the lady in red loathes him. It was all political expediency.

Yes, yes BUT, the poster just wanted to mouth off, never mind the facts. People have tried and tried to muck Obama and it simply has no basis. In fact, in my own case in purchasing a condo, I got several upgrades just by dickering with the company that built them. A discount is not a bribe, It is called getting the best deal I coul.d get. Hmmm, imagine if some Republican came to audit my finances, grrr he would report me for getting a discount on the purchase of extras. Prolly he had similar deals when he nought stuff. Seems normal to me. But you know Republicans, they like THEIR deals, they hate other deals. All purchase dickeringdeals are ok.
