Election Central Morning Roundup

Tonight: Hillary's Big Speech
Hillary Clinton will be giving her much-anticipated convention speech tonight, in which she rallies her own supporters to Barack Obama's candidacy. Expect Hillary to talk about the values her campaign stood for, and how Barack Obama will uphold those ideals and John McCain opposes them -- but expect the press to scrutinize it endlessly for some sort of hidden message or insufficient enthusiasm.

Obama In Missouri Today
Barack Obama is in Kansas City today, with an event scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. ET. Obama is touring targeted swing states before he officially accepts the Democratic nomination in Denver -- he was in Iowa yesterday, is in Missouri today, and will be in Montana tomorrow.

McCain In Arizona And California Today
John McCain is campaigning today in states that aren't expected to be closely contested. First he's addressing the American Legion convention in Phoenix, Arizona, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, and then he will travel to California, with a scheduled arrival in San Diego at 8:45 ET.

Ex-Hillary Delegate Turned McCain Supporter: McCain Is For Roe!
At an RNC-sponsored press conference yesterday, former Hillary delegate turned McCain commercial star Debra Bartoshevich claimed it would be okay if McCain became president because he's against overturning Roe v. Wade. In fact, McCain has said multiple times during this campaign that he wants Roe overturned, and she cited a 1999 quote that he's been running away from ever since he first said it.

Some Hillary Supporters To Leave Convention Before Obama Speaks
The Washington Post reports that several top Hillary Clinton advisers will not be staying in Denver for Barack Obama's Thursday night speech -- not exactly a sign of enthusiastic support for Obama. Most notably, Terry McAuliffe will be leaving Denver after Bill Clinton speaks on Wednesday.

Feds: Man Arrested For Threatening Obama Did Not Pose Credible Threat
Authorities say a heavily-armed man arrested in the Denver area on suspicion of making threats against Barack Obama is not a cause for serious concern. "We're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado," said U.S. Attorney Troy Eid.

The RNC facilitated Debra Bartoshevich's statements about McCain and Roe v. Wade? Wow. For a minute there, this sounded like a reverse version of Operation Chaos. Maybe she was a Trojan horse.

Take that info to every conservative blog as proof that "John McCain wants to kill unborn babies!!!" Be sure and use all-caps often.

user-pic

Bartoshevich is obviously deluding herself into believing in a fantasy that despite all that John McCain has said and done in his career, including tons of votes in Congress and campaign promises, he's somehow not really pro-life and just pretending to be. Well, I've got news for her. McCain is going to appoint Alitos and Scalias, and among other legal outcomes that she almost certainly disfavors, they are going to drastically curtail a woman's right to choose, which she does not support.

Just ignore her.

user-pic

Even better, somebody who can get her contact info should get the truth to her. Imagine if she were on the news testifying as to how McCain's campaign lied to her face to get her support.

What I'd really like to see is an enterprising reporter dig deeper into her past. Which primaries has she voted in? How did she wind up as a Clinton delegate? Any dirt out there on her? She's made herself a public figure; if someone wants to look into what preceded that, seems like fair play to me...

Of the roughly 300 million people in this country I'd guess 280 million are deluding themselves about something significant, and usually it's more of a platform of delusion. Slap some makeup on it and shove it in front of a camera and it screams, but it's everywhere.

Wow... what a journalistic piece of turd that WaPo article is. It's all about people who can't stick around for Obama's speech because they have other things they need to do in their life - like business and their child's wedding.

An absolute disgrace of a story that further confirms how much of a MSM media only story this "Hillary dissenters" topic is.

Not only is the WApo article..a piece of shyt but so is this EC roundup...did you notice how 3 of the 6 headers have Hillary in them?

What the hell...can't TPM find any news to write about that does not focus on Hillary?

This is completely disgusting. If people were acting like Democrats then we would see this site focused on Obama.

They would have followed up with Michelle and the kids and had news about them.

They would follow up with the McCaskill kids or the family Obama was with in MO last night.

Instead this is just a Clintonfest!

Unbeliiiiievable.

Obama is having his speech in Invesco for that very reason..so he does not have to worry about all those idiots in the WaPo article. Who don't want to demonstrate support for his candidacy or maybe all of those folks are actually scalping their tickets on ebay!!

Yup. Greg & Eric, the Hillary shills, cannot get over her. Y'day, it was all about Mcinsane, the clintons' bff.

HILLARY IS EXCELLENT NEWS!! FOR MCCAIN!!!

!!!JohnSidneyMcmanymansionsMENTUM™!!!!

WaPo's article is phase one of the Republican strategy:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/08/lets-preempt-the-msm-bounce-sp.php#comments

1) Distract, interrupt, and create chaos and noise during the DNC convention. This is to prevent attention on the DNC message, both pos and neg.

2) Afterwards, trumpet how shocked they are that there's not a 50 point bounce.

WaPo = Good GOP soldiers

Channeling Russert: This convention comes down to three things: Hillary, Hillary, Hillary.

Would she want it any other way?

http://pufferfish.typepad.com/

Shame on you TPM!! SHAME on you!!
Why do you have a front page headline of Michelle with Hillary's WORDS!!!

Why is the focus on Hillary? Don't you think you will have lots to write about her after HER speech tonight?

Why in the world is she quoted today when Michelle said FAR more than that?

The quote for your headline should be ...Vote your HOPES not your FEARS

or

Stop Doubting and START DREAMING!!!

that was the essence of Michelle Obama's speech.

TPM is becoming like the mainstream media by parroting Clinton talking points.

This election is about the Obama's not the Clintons.

Hillary LOST..start treating her like the loser.
She was not the keynote speaker her words are not the essence of what is going on.

TPM ..you can do better than the traditional media. We EXPECT more from you.

Change the headline. Focus forward!!

The Clintons are toast.

The Obama's are the sunrise for the party.

Hillary is DONE.

Move on.

Give Michelle respect for being GRACIOUS enough to acknowledge Hillary but do NOT make Hillary the focal point of her speech because she was NOT!!

ugggh!

Hey, vicissitudes, TPM has always been fond of HRC. Most of the readers seem to lean Obama, but Greg and osh have a soft spot for HRC in their hearts. No biggie. Their motives are clearly not he same as the MSM -- which actually loathes Hillary but enjoys the Clinton drama.

Observer2, I well know the history of this site and there unabashed focus on all things HILL during the primarys Kleefield and Sargent were totally biased. If the headlines could be skewed to Hillarys talking points they were! I have been posting at this site since before it was changed to this piece of techno crap thread where there is no longer cogent analysis and just a troll fest.

HowEVER, I have hope that with prodding and feedback Sargent, Kleefield and Marshall will notice how they are not focused on the Obama campaign and if they truly are Democrats and want to win back the WhiteHouse they will focus on a far more meaningful role..which is to cover the Obama talking points UNLIKE the MSM. This focus on Hill and Bill is OUT. TPM needs to be progressive and focus on the new leader in the party. Stop with all these divisive ruckus rousing headers that show our party as divided. Ignore the Clinton whiners and their manaical supporters.

This is a biggie. TPM hearts not only have to be in the right place but so does their journalism. They should be in the business of showing that we are a party united not divided. The focus should be on stories that demonstrated the Obama's have the same values as the rest of America. Covering the Clinton talking points and their bitter sore loser antics is completely the WRONG take.

It is not even as if they have to work that hard to do it. The McCaskill family offered lots of verbage, so did Kennedy's speech and Michelle's.
Instead they focused the entire thing on Hillarys sore loser comments.

This site should be telling folks how those votes did not mean diddly and emphasizing how far more people voted for Obama and focusing on how poorly the campaign was wrong. The focus should be on how awesome and strategic Obama was and what a phenomenal campaign he ran, what a great visionary and leader he is. It should be an Obamafest!! Not a Clinton 'catharis' of mewing, and whinning, and kvetching about the loser!!

This site should be about the OPPONENTS not the sore losers in the Democratic party who no longer have jobs because they backed the wrong horse. Which is why they are leavign the convention..they no longer have a power base. They are locked out of the inner circle. Obama has taken the reins. What we need are stories out Of the Obama camp.

But..nooooo...this site wants to focus on all things Clinton!!

It's a BIG forsnookin deal!! BFSD

Sadly, TPM's coverage is shaped by a realistic model of what this convention is trying to achieve.

This convention is, actually, largely about trying to get former Hillary supporters on board. We don't need to persuade ourselves, and we're not going to persuade Republicans. The largest audience of people we *could* get -- but haven't yet gotten -- are Hillary supporters.

I loved Michelle's speech, I thought it was fabulous. If you want the sort of generalized coverage you describe, you can get it elsewhere. TPM is giving us coverage informed by a slightly savvier model of what counts as "success" in this context.

Alex, where the hell do you think that 'generalized' coverage you describe is at? Huh?

No one in the mainstram media is covering anything but the Clintons and their whining and gripping..just like TPM-EC is doing!

What are you watching to think the focus is on the Obama's and not the Clintons? The only snippet MSM is playing of Michelle's speech is the HRC quote!! For pete's sake..why in the world is TPM-EC reporting the same as them? WTF?!

By the way, I don't like that context either. I'm *tired* of hearing from Clinton delegates. But it truly is the electoral context we're operating in.

Alex,
Could you please provide some context and clarity on what you mean by savvier success model?
I have been posting at this site for over 3 years and this new model is anything but savvier and more successful..unless you call having a trollhitfest, success? Is that it? Success is defined by how many trolls come out to post on a thread?
You are savvier if you come up with points to discuss that attract idiots, morons, and imbeciles?
You have threads which endleessly repeat the talkingpoints the sore losers are whinning about?

Wow. If, so. I for one do not beleive following the senseless nonsensical memes is all that savvy. I have another word for it...ignorance.

I agree that the tone on comment threads is a problem. But I don't feel inclined to blame the TPM writers themselves for that problem.

Ummm, well until this site was converted to the 'savvier model' you characterize it as, there was not this overpopulation of trolls, to drive up hits.
This was a thoughtful site, where folks had real discussions.
Trolls learned quickly they were unwelcome and moved on.
Not now.
This site was a former 5thAve Manhattan penthouse and now it is subsidized housing in terms of the trolls it attracts.

So again, I ask you what did you mean by 'savvier success' model?

First, let's get the quote right.

"TPM is giving us coverage informed by a slightly savvier model of what counts as 'success' in this context."

I mean electoral success. I.e, TPM's coverage is not trying to make us happy by repeating the Democratic message, or by highlighting the things that we think "ought" to matter. It is shaped by -- what I consider -- a savvy understanding of the electoral obstacles Obama actually faces. Thus the emphasis on the Clintons. I don't like it, but it's a reality.

I don't know exactly how you got the idea that I'm talking about the redesign of TPM Cafe. In any case, I've been reading TPM since 2003, and I understand what you're saying. I hope they clean the place up after the election, perhaps by instituting a more stringent form of moderation. Otherwise I'll probably take off for DKos.

So let me understand something Alex..you think that the savvy thing to do is to cover the opponent in his own party rather than the one who is running against him for President?

How in the world is that savvy? What in the world makes that a success model? It seems to simply be a parroting of the mainstream media. We can hear this same tired Clinton/Hillary meme repeatedly on MSNBC, CNN, and Fox...so how in the world is it savvy?

What would be savvy is to take the fight to McCain to ignore the Clinton drama and focus on the candidate we want to take back the White House.
All this Clinton psychobabbledrama gains us NOTHING. It is endless, meaningless chatter that takes away the focus from the true candidate.

As far as for making us happy and repeating the Democratic message goes...that is precisely what TPM is doing...only thing is it is the Clintons message and it is not making us happy.

We need the message to be about the GOP vs. the Democrats not the Dems vs. Dems.

There is nothing savvy about internecine warfare...zilch..it is the old divide and conquer. What is worse is that we have supposedly Democrats focused on infighting as if that is 'savvy news' content?

Puhleeeeze. It is nothing but the crap guaranteed and engineered for a Democratic loss in the general. To think that TPM is does not understand that because they are savvy success model is outrageous.

I expect more from TPM..and that does not mean making me happy. It does mean providing cogent thoughtful analysis that focuses the Democrats on winning not on constantly repeating some LOSERS talking points specifically geared to ensure the nominees lost.

The Clintons are keeping the campaign 'off message' right along with the GOP and Talking Points Memo is happily following and regurgitating this stuff as if it is 'savvy news' for a successful model in the blogosphere?

Give. Me. A. Break.

David Axelrod has one job. Josh Marshall has another. They're not the same job.

There's a place for message discipline. There's also a place for candid analysis. I come to TPM for the latter.

As someone who voted for Clinton in the primary, all I can say is, give it a rest. Give it a rest! Obama is the nominee and we're all behind him, excpet some random (racist?) loons.

I think you're right about the fact that the vast majority of HRC supporters are behind Barack. I hope people who feel the way you do will engage the media to help clear the air.

user-pic

TPM,

Who gives a crap about McCain's 3am ad. Why is that at the top? This is the Democratic week. Please put up some pro-Dem stuff at the top of the page.

user-pic

Why aren't we hearing about threats made against McCain or Bush or Cheney? Geez people! You seem to be doing your level best to scare the voters once again.

As for Hillary supporters not hanging around for Obama's speech -- Ask Hillary WHY NOT?

user-pic

Why not? Maybe because they can see all the need to on the TV? Maybe because they've already had a chance to meet privately with everyone they want to in the earlier days of the convention? Maybe because Obama has a well-(wo)manned ship about to set sail without them?

My gawd, is anybody sorry to see Terry go?

user-pic

I will be glad when all this clinton melodrama is over. Hopefully in a couple of weeks we'll be focusing on the election and not the latest clinton bs. Amazing. We heard nothing about the clintons from 2000 through the war votes up until the clintons made a play this year and since then it has been 24/7 the clintons. Why didn't they jump up and down on the war vote and get press then? Why didn't the clintons do anything in the senate for 8 years? I am soooooo sick and tired of the 24/7 clinton bull. Please let it end!!!!

"Ex-Hillary Delegate Turned McCain Supporter: McCain Is For Roe!
At an RNC-sponsored press conference yesterday, former Hillary delegate turned McCain commercial star Debra Bartoshevich claimed it would be okay if McCain became president because he's against overturning Roe v. Wade. In fact, McCain has said multiple times during this campaign that he wants Roe overturned, and she cited a 1999 quote that he's been running away from ever since he first said it."

Is McCain making secret promises to betray the pro-lifers and christian right???

That would be news.

But I think this slick, slippery chameleon McCain will say and do anything to get elected.

Who'd've thought McAuliffe would turn out to be such a numbskull?

In fairness to Terry, the Barack speech is a tough ticket. He probably couldn't get in.

Ditto Bill.

Terry McAuliffe is a giant douchebag, as he proved over and over in the months of May and June.

Yesterday was the day before Hillary's big speech.

Today is the day of Hillary's big speech.

Tomorrow will be the day after Hillary's big speech. (Also the day of Bill's big speech.)

Have we left anything out?

BINGO!!
Thank you for saying it so succinctly.

I'd like to know what Hillary's role would be at an Obama inauguration. There really should be some tribute to Clinton greatness there. Maybe he could be sworn in on Hillary's book?

user-pic

Funny. I still have a visual of the secret service carting her away from the podium on inauguration day and her kicking and screaming that she really won or was president or some such nonsense.

Did anyone ELSE notice how the reports are downplaying the threat to Obama's life?

The reporter says the people had bullet proof vest and that the guy's friends said he wanted to kill Obama and that they had rifles, sniper scope and meth in the car as well as 'ties' to white supremacists. Yet the reporter says the authorities do not think this is an organized threat?

WTF?
Does anyone recall how the black guys in Florida were treated as terrorists despite not knowing where to find the Middle East on the map..they were called TERRORISTS!

But these guys are not 'thought' to be organized white supremacists, despite being caught in Denver with guns, meth and bullet proof vests and TELLING the police that the guy wanted to kill Obama!!

OMG!!

I couldn't believe my ears listening to this reporter downplayed all the KNOWN facts!! Not speculation but actually statements and evidence were being poooh pahhed...

This is outrageous.

user-pic

That florida situation was beyond absurd. Those guys couldn't blow up a balloon. A fed operative rounds up a bunch of homeless guys by promising them money and food and then calls them terrorists. Pathetic.

By the way, I'm actually glad that the reporter down played the threat. We are all worried as it is. It's not necessary to play up a threat. Also, playing up the threat is not a good idea in general I believe. As long as it was stopped is all I care about.

MichaelA,
I agree that it is dangerous to focus on it. I have so many concerns as most Americans who were born before the 60s do.

What struck me though was the contrast between the black TERRORISTS which was as you rightly described ABSURD yet ...white supremacists acts are 'not serious'?!!! C'mon..it is the hypocrisy of it all.

The reporter could have said they are focused and always alert but 'not serious'?

Are we suppose to be idiots about bulletproof vests, sniper scopes, rifles and METH? If that is something that 'is not serious'...what the hell would be?
How coincidental that they are in Denver, not all staying at the same hotel, either?

Please I do not work for the secret service, but those details in no one make me think 'not serious' UNLIKE that completely bogus situation in FL, where the authorities provided the guys with everything to make them look like terrorists.

This is a serious threat and it should not be pooh pahhed.

or maybe...whitesupremacists are such a box of dumbrocks that they are foolish enough to beleive the authorities aren't on to them?

It wouldn't surprise me if these guys are found to be from Arkansas, either.

user-pic

I do get your point and don't mean to undercut it.

Incidentally on the florida thing, that should have been a non-issue with no media and probably shouldn't have occurred in the first place. The king manufactured the threat and then played up the threat for political purposes. Talk about disgusting.

user-pic

Wingers are hoping with all their might that the Clintons will upstage Obama at the convention. The always-GOP Chicago Tribune puts the idiot columnist John Kass on the front page (he's usually on p.2) with his take on how the Clintons will try to steal the show and encourage HRC's supporters to vote for Johnny Rotten. Then the editorial page has yet another cartoon by Ramirez of Bill and Hillary stealing the show, with the hapless Obama in the distance waving his arms.
They're hoping for this because M'Cain's got nothing beyond POW POW POW and it gives them the chance to rail on about Bill again.

Which is why Obama is going to give his speech in a larger arena. No matter what happens he is going to upstage the Clintons.

Hey, a bit off topic, but there's some lovely background on DKos about Harold Simmons, the Ayers ad funder and former swiftboater.

http://dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/26/8426/07134/757/574867

If there's ever a guy who deserved having his dirty laundry aired, it's Harold. Especially since it's quite relevant to the question of where the money is coming from.

Where's the coverage of Cindy McCain being banished to a fact-finding trip to Georgia?? We're sorry, Cindy won't be able to address the republican convention because she is out of the country on national business.

McCain's folks must have pictured the contrast between Cindy (Miss Buffalo Chip) and Michelle (Miss America) and decided to get the little lady out of town. Fast!

Cindy rushed to Georgia because she heard there was a great deal on a condo over there.

Yeah, you are right Bronto...but they sure covered it well...the talking point is she went to Georgia to 'assess the civilian casualties' now that sure makes her sound like a FirstLady doesn't it...without the sniper fire of course...maybe she will confront a Russian tank instead with her fragile wrist in a sling!!

Cindy is a dope fiend..on a dope run is the real truth.

They'll probably claim she was detained by the South Ossetians while she searched for victims.

One Family -- Two POWs -- Wow!

Michelle's comment about Clinton showed unity so I have no problem with TPM trying to push unity when the entire media is doing the GOP's job of pushing discord among the Democrats.

For every fanatical Clinton supporter, there are thousands of Clinton supporters who plan to support Obama. But the fanatics make a more interesting story.

If Hillary is really serious about rallying her supporters to Obama, and I believe that she is, she needs to do a commercial for Obama.

user-pic

Yep, and above all else she should tell her supporters to knock it off and get behind obama. She won't though, because she likes to feed the drama and want's to undercut obama. It's 2012 or bust. She is feeding these people as opposed to shutting them down. It would be a very simple task.

If the campaign wants her to do a commercial for Obama, they'll ask her and she'll do it. EOS.

"The Washington Post reports that several top Hillary Clinton advisers will not be staying in Denver for Barack Obama's Thursday night speech --not exactly a sign of enthusiastic support for Obama. Most notably, Terry McAuliffe will be leaving Denver after Bill Clinton speaks on Wednesday."

Yet another example of careless "reporting," creating the impression of many when the post is about...10 people??

More accurate writing:

...several top Hillary Clinton advisers will not be staying in Denver for Barack Obama's Thursday night speech...not exactly a sign of enthusiastic support for Obama AMONG CLINTON'S TOP AIDES."

There. That's better. Even accurate given the larger context of the post.

But: Why accuracy and precision when crap, gossip and bs is so much more fun?

You are dead on.

The whole article was about Clinton Top Aides.

They could have even said they are no longer part of the power inner circle, since the Clintons are no longer the powerbrokers in the Dem party.

If someone wanted to do a good story...they would compare and contrast what happened when the 'outsider southernerClintons' came to power in the Dem party and all the folks that walked out on their convention.

They should cover how this is a real changing of the guard and a generational shift, just like WJC was ..he was the first babyboomer President.

It was a cultural and generatinal shift in the powerbase in DC when the Clintons came to town.

It is no different with the Obama's...the Clintons should be shown to have evolved into just the sorts they pushed off the center stage when Bill became the nominee.

Everyone recalls all their young upstarts, like Stepinfetchinopoulos, DeeDeeMeyers, Caraville etc.

The press simply refuses to focus on the Obamas and how their ascendancy is the same tug of war with the power status quo.

It is new lion vs. old lion...in the DC crowd.

You're making a good point here, Vic. There are people who have their noses out of joint, because w/ Obama in the Oval Houses, their Days in the Sun are officially over. And that applies not only to political advisors and certain lobbyists, but to certain pundits, journalists and MSM Talking Heads.

A good catch Philip. I hear Joe, the douchebag is in trouble over his drunken brawl in today's show @ NBC. May be, Greg and Eric can audition for his job? They will be a walk-in. They are that good.

I hear Joe, the douchebag is in trouble over his drunken brawl in today's show @ NBC.

What? Can you elaborate?

hillary advisers = bunch of whining babies

I really am tired of hearing about the Clintons. Nobody cares about them except the MSM trying to keep the "controversy" going for their ratings. Its really pathetic when you turn to CNN and they mention there name every 5 seconds.

Some Hillary Supporters To Leave Convention Before Obama Speaks

This whole thing is much ado about nothing. It's only a very tiny percentage of hard-core Hillary lunatics who are doing this and it's being fueled by the MSM which loves anything that hints of conflict. The Dems are a lot more together than the Repugs, who are threatening to bolt if McSame picks a pro-choice VP nominee.

And if its assholes like McAuliffe who are leaving Denver before Thursday, good riddance!

user-pic

Don't count on the media to stop pushing the "tensions" and "controversy". Since the GOP made this stuff, the media will continue to report it because "tensions" and "controversy" sell copy drive up ratings.

Also I agree with Viss. These men who planned the kill Barack Obama should be labelled terrorists. But I'm sure they won't. When Timothy McVie and Terry Nicohls pulled off the Oklahoma City bombing it was and is still described as the worst case of domestic terrorism ever but Nichols and McVie have never been call terrrorists.

user-pic

Updating their resumes, maybe?

user-pic

I'd be very happy with Terry McAuliffe being away from the convention if it would mean he was away from any cameras. Like, until after November (or forever...)

But I doubt we're that lucky.

Dean is pimping Hillary's speech tonight. Supposedly she really rises to the occasion.
