Tonight: Hillary's Big Speech
Hillary Clinton will be giving her much-anticipated convention speech tonight, in which she rallies her own supporters to Barack Obama's candidacy. Expect Hillary to talk about the values her campaign stood for, and how Barack Obama will uphold those ideals and John McCain opposes them -- but expect the press to scrutinize it endlessly for some sort of hidden message or insufficient enthusiasm.
Obama In Missouri Today
Barack Obama is in Kansas City today, with an event scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. ET. Obama is touring targeted swing states before he officially accepts the Democratic nomination in Denver -- he was in Iowa yesterday, is in Missouri today, and will be in Montana tomorrow.
McCain In Arizona And California Today
John McCain is campaigning today in states that aren't expected to be closely contested. First he's addressing the American Legion convention in Phoenix, Arizona, scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, and then he will travel to California, with a scheduled arrival in San Diego at 8:45 ET.
Ex-Hillary Delegate Turned McCain Supporter: McCain Is For Roe!
At an RNC-sponsored press conference yesterday, former Hillary delegate turned McCain commercial star Debra Bartoshevich claimed it would be okay if McCain became president because he's against overturning Roe v. Wade. In fact, McCain has said multiple times during this campaign that he wants Roe overturned, and she cited a 1999 quote that he's been running away from ever since he first said it.
Some Hillary Supporters To Leave Convention Before Obama Speaks
The Washington Post reports that several top Hillary Clinton advisers will not be staying in Denver for Barack Obama's Thursday night speech -- not exactly a sign of enthusiastic support for Obama. Most notably, Terry McAuliffe will be leaving Denver after Bill Clinton speaks on Wednesday.
Feds: Man Arrested For Threatening Obama Did Not Pose Credible Threat
Authorities say a heavily-armed man arrested in the Denver area on suspicion of making threats against Barack Obama is not a cause for serious concern. "We're absolutely confident there is no credible threat to the candidate, the Democratic National Convention, or the people of Colorado," said U.S. Attorney Troy Eid.
The RNC facilitated Debra Bartoshevich's statements about McCain and Roe v. Wade? Wow. For a minute there, this sounded like a reverse version of Operation Chaos. Maybe she was a Trojan horse.

Bartoshevich is obviously deluding herself into believing in a fantasy that despite all that John McCain has said and done in his career, including tons of votes in Congress and campaign promises, he's somehow not really pro-life and just pretending to be. Well, I've got news for her. McCain is going to appoint Alitos and Scalias, and among other legal outcomes that she almost certainly disfavors, they are going to drastically curtail a woman's right to choose, which she does not support.

Observer2, I well know the history of this site and there unabashed focus on all things HILL during the primarys Kleefield and Sargent were totally biased. If the headlines could be skewed to Hillarys talking points they were! I have been posting at this site since before it was changed to this piece of techno crap thread where there is no longer cogent analysis and just a troll fest.
HowEVER, I have hope that with prodding and feedback Sargent, Kleefield and Marshall will notice how they are not focused on the Obama campaign and if they truly are Democrats and want to win back the WhiteHouse they will focus on a far more meaningful role..which is to cover the Obama talking points UNLIKE the MSM. This focus on Hill and Bill is OUT. TPM needs to be progressive and focus on the new leader in the party. Stop with all these divisive ruckus rousing headers that show our party as divided. Ignore the Clinton whiners and their manaical supporters.
This is a biggie. TPM hearts not only have to be in the right place but so does their journalism. They should be in the business of showing that we are a party united not divided. The focus should be on stories that demonstrated the Obama's have the same values as the rest of America. Covering the Clinton talking points and their bitter sore loser antics is completely the WRONG take.
It is not even as if they have to work that hard to do it. The McCaskill family offered lots of verbage, so did Kennedy's speech and Michelle's.
Instead they focused the entire thing on Hillarys sore loser comments.
This site should be telling folks how those votes did not mean diddly and emphasizing how far more people voted for Obama and focusing on how poorly the campaign was wrong. The focus should be on how awesome and strategic Obama was and what a phenomenal campaign he ran, what a great visionary and leader he is. It should be an Obamafest!! Not a Clinton 'catharis' of mewing, and whinning, and kvetching about the loser!!
This site should be about the OPPONENTS not the sore losers in the Democratic party who no longer have jobs because they backed the wrong horse. Sadly, TPM's coverage is shaped by a realistic model of what this convention is trying to achieve.
This convention is, actually, largely about trying to get former Hillary supporters on board. We don't need to persuade ourselves, and we're not going to persuade Republicans. The largest audience of people we *could* get -- but haven't yet gotten -- are Hillary supporters.
I loved Michelle's speech, I thought it was fabulous. If you want the sort of generalized coverage you describe, you can get it elsewhere. TPM is giving us coverage informed by a slightly savvier model of what counts as "success" in this context.

First, let's get the quote right.

I mean electoral success. I.e, TPM's coverage is not trying to make us happy by repeating the Democratic message, or by highlighting the things that we think "ought" to matter. It is shaped by -- what I consider -- a savvy understanding of the electoral obstacles Obama actually faces. Thus the emphasis on the Clintons. I don't like it, but it's a reality.
I don't know exactly how you got the idea that I'm talking about the redesign of TPM Cafe. In any case, I've been reading TPM since 2003, and I understand what you're saying. I hope they clean the place up after the election, perhaps by instituting a more stringent form of moderation. Otherwise I'll probably take off for DKos.

What would be savvy is to take the fight to McCain to ignore the Clinton drama and focus on the candidate we want to take back the White House.

Did anyone ELSE notice how the reports are downplaying the threat to Obama's life?
The reporter says the people had bullet proof vest and that the guy's friends said he wanted to kill Obama and that they had rifles, sniper scope and meth in the car as well as 'ties' to white supremacists. Yet the reporter says the authorities do not think this is an organized threat?
WTF?
Does anyone recall how the black guys in Florida were treated as terrorists despite not knowing where to find the Middle East on the map..they were called TERRORISTS!
But these guys are not 'thought' to be organized white supremacists, despite being caught in Denver with guns, meth and bullet proof vests and TELLING the police that the guy wanted to kill Obama!!

By the way, I'm actually glad that the reporter down played the threat. We are all worried as it is. It's not necessary to play up a threat. Also, playing up the threat is not a good idea in general I believe. As long as it was stopped is all I care about.

You are dead on.
The whole article was about Clinton Top Aides.
They could have even said they are no longer part of the power inner circle, since the Clintons are no longer the powerbrokers in the Dem party.
If someone wanted to do a good story...they would compare and contrast what happened when the 'outsider southernerClintons' came to power in the Dem party and all the folks that walked out on their convention.
They should cover how this is a real changing of the guard and a generational shift, just like WJC was ..he was the first babyboomer President.
It was a cultural and generatinal shift in the powerbase in DC when the Clintons came to town.
It is no different with the Obama's...the Clintons should be shown to have evolved into just the sorts they pushed off the center stage when Bill became the nominee.
Everyone recalls all their young upstarts, like Stepinfetchinopoulos, DeeDeeMeyers, Caraville etc.
The press simply refuses to focus on the Obamas and how their ascendancy is the same tug of war with the power status quo.

You're making a good point here, Vic. There are people who have their noses out of joint, because w/ Obama in the Oval Houses, their Days in the Sun are officially over. And that applies not only to political advisors and certain lobbyists, but to certain pundits, journalists and MSM Talking Heads.

This whole thing is much ado about nothing. It's only a very tiny percentage of hard-core Hillary lunatics who are doing this and it's being fueled by the MSM which loves anything that hints of conflict. The Dems are a lot more together than the Repugs, who are threatening to bolt if McSame picks a pro-choice VP nominee.

Don't count on the media to stop pushing the "tensions" and "controversy". Since the GOP made this stuff, the media will continue to report it because "tensions" and "controversy" sell copy drive up ratings.
Also I agree with Viss. These men who planned the kill Barack Obama should be labelled terrorists. But I'm sure they won't. When Timothy McVie and Terry Nicohls pulled off the Oklahoma City bombing it was and is still described as the worst case of domestic terrorism ever but Nichols and McVie have never been call terrrorists.
