New Obama Ad In Nevada Attacks McCain On Yucca Mountain
The Obama campaign has a new negative spot airing in the perennial swing state of Nevada, hammering John McCain on the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository. The ad warns Nevadans that John McCain is in favor of opening the repository in their state -- even though he'd be against nuclear waste being brought through his own home state:

Obama Arrives In Hawaii
Barack Obama and his family have arrived in Hawaii for their week-long vacation. Although the trip will be mostly rest and relaxation for the candidate, he did greet supporters at a rally to welcome his arrival: "I'm going to go bodysurfing at an undisclosed location."

McCain In Nevada Today
John McCain will be in Nevada today -- the same state where the Obama people are on the air attacking him -- giving an address to the Disabled American Veterans convention in Las Vegas. The speech is scheduled to begin at 4:45 p.m.

Obama: McCain's Pro-Bush Agenda Goes Against "Country First" Slogan
Barack Obama recorded this week's Democratic rebuttal to the president's weekly radio address -- the first time he has done so as the presumptive nominee for president. Obama used the speech to go after John McCain: "Senator McCain talks about putting our country first, but he is running for a third term of the very same policies that have set our country back. We can't afford to take that chance."

McCain: Obama Is Like "A Big Summer Blockbuster"
John McCain upped the rhetoric in his campaign's efforts to paint Barack obama as a vapid celebrity, using this line in his weekly radio address: "Taking in my opponent's performances is a little like watching a big summer blockbuster, and an hour in realizing that all the best scenes were in the trailer you saw last fall."

Poll: Dem Ahead For Missouri Governor's Race
A new Rasmussen poll of the Missouri gubernatorial race shows Democratic nominee Jay Nixon, the long-serving state attorney general, significantly ahead of Congressman Kenny Hulshof, the Republican nominee. The numbers: Nixon 53%, Hulshof 42%.

Edwards: Photo Of Man With Baby Might Be Me
During his interview yesterday with ABC News, John Edwards did not rule out the possibility that he is the man in the National Enquirer's blurry photograph of a man holding a baby -- alleged by the tabloid to be his own baby with Rielle Hunter. But Edwards said the photo doesn't necessarily mean anything: "Do you know how many pictures have been taken of me holding children in the last three years? I mean it happens all the time."

Interesting that Obama is targeting his attack ads to specific States, while going largely positive in National buys.

Targeted one state ads could be really effective.

I do wish the ad would have asked "What does John McCain plan to do with the nuclear waste from the 45 new Nuclear Power Plants his energy plan calls for.

heck yeah its going to be effective, because mainly people in nevada are going to care about this, not someone in New York, even though Im sure they are great environmentalist.

McCain's "maverek" anti-spending means he's opposed lots and lots of local projects that probably mean a lot the people in those states.

McCain: Obama Is Like "A Big Summer Blockbuster"

Ouch, McCain really has him on the ropes now.

Yeah, we all know how America hates popular movies.

Ya, Americans realy hate a blockbuster!

Just a summer Blockbuster!! In your dreams (McCain's) baby!! I think that what McCain was really trying to say is that he experiences Obama like the alien in the blockbuster "The Alien," but he couldn't bring himself to say it. Be afraid, John, be very afraid.

Speaking of John, there are ways to emphasize just how vapid he has become, which Obama can't do directly, but we here on the web can.

Everything this rat writes is correct, and it is so cute! I hear you can cook too...

I can't for the life of me work myself into the panic attack that seems to come so easily to some around here

I suspect McCain's current ads are so lacking in substance that even low-information voters realize it. The ads will only resonate with people who have already decided to vote against Obama. Net gain for McCain, zero.

Take 2 Xanax and call me in the morning

By doing targeted negative ads in specific states, while keeping a nationally positive message, Obama could actually get away with a lot more attack ads, because if he had one targeted attack ad for every swing state, each of those states would only see one attack ad and then the largely positive national ads, and non-swing Staters would only see the national buys.

Whereas the McCain campaign doing negative national buys gets painted as the negative attack candidate and eventually the negative ads will probably lose certain bite or effectiveness.

The Yucca ad is actually pretty poorly done.

I know many don't want to talk about it, but Edwards is still lying about something. First rule of a PR disaster is get everything out at once.

It will be interesting to see what charges McCain makes towards Obama while visiting the Disabled Vets. McCain's record here could really be challenged as well if he wants to start mudslinging.

I noticed that during the credible parts of the interview his gaze was steady. During the parts where he seemed to be hedging... regarding the photos with the baby or payments having been made, he started blinking rapidly. Pretty bad poker face, actually.

I still don't think it has any relevance to the general, though.

True, it's a gamble, but it could work.

Jeez,

Are you always this pessimistic about everything or just politics. Dude don't be a Debbier-Downer.

Note to TPM: McCain doesn't have a weekly radio address. He's got a press release that he records as an MP3 file and sends to the press that he calls a "weekly radio address" and then you parrot it.

Radio is particular form of communication. If TPM can distinguish between a web-only ad and a TV ad you should be able to distinguish between a radio address and an audio file. They are not the same.

McCain calls his recording a "weekly radio address" to make himself seem more Presidential. Why do you play along?

user-pic

And why does all the media play along?

Isn't it a bit "presumptuous" for McCain to be having "weekly radio addresses"?

You mean compared to putting your name on a faux presidential seal?

The Republican Senate committee have no problem doing it.

They were not talking about McCain's "weekly raidio adress". The were talking about the presidents.

I actually think that this is good politics by the Obama campaign. As Hilary Clinton and Al Gore and everyone else knows, you win the presidency by the electoral college, i.e. individual states. You do not win by the popular vote which is what the national polls essentially measure.

Bye targeting states specifically, obama is truly using a 50 state strategy. While McCain is busy releasing national ads (when most people agree that most voters aren't really paying attention). But what do people pay attention to, their local news, newspaper. Many people read their local newspaper daily, but they may not watch national news as much. By specifically targeting states Obama is putting the issues in the context of what should be important to the voter.

user-pic

Interesting approach by the Obama campaign on using positive ads for National buys unless they are counterattack ads and the actual ATTACK ads are more for local issues.

Remember all politics are local.

I would like to see Obama run attack ads in Pennyslvania and Florida attacking McCain on privatizing social security. He should start running them this week since it is the anniversary of social security and McCain will be in Pennsylvania on Monday with Tom Ridge.

Do you think Tom Ridge is a potential running mate?

Ridge has no chance whatsoever. He's pro-choice.

user-pic

Tom Ridge is pro-choice so I am not sure if conservatives will like that at all.

My in-laws are very pro-life and Republican. If Tom Ridge is on the ticket, they won't be voting for McCain.

Obama:  McCain's Pro-Bush Agenda Goes Against "Country First" Slogan

But it's totally resonant with his Countrywide First agenda.  Damn whiners!

McLame is getting restless day by day, scrambling for news. He has to come up with a attention grabbing "quip" to stay in the news.

He doesn't have shit, no plan or vision. McLame is even not good at attack strategy. Blockbuster- I wonder how many normal people would be worried about Obama now.

Jon Stewart had a great opening segment this past Wednesday that is worth checking out(though I don't know if this direct link will work)-

It's amazing how new off-shore drilling can now be producing oil within months according to the McCain, surrogates and bought and paid for talking heads.

It's amazing how new off-shore drilling can now be producing oil within months...

I'm surprised that nobody picked up on the bullshit part of the Paris Hilton two-way energy strategy.  She said that drilling would cover near-term needs.  Dumb bunny.  That's not hot!

RE: Yucca Mountain Ad

THAT is what I want to see from Obama. The new radio ad in Ohio is smokin', too. These ads and more like them will put McGoo on the defensive and might inspire that 4-alarm temper tantrum we know is coming.

Keep 'em coming, Barack.

Since we're talking about attack ads, here is a couple web ads from the Dems -

McCain the Big Oil puppet - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VMfcOIegcs&e

McCain's unbiased advisers - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3SDA3cbsdY&e

I like that first ad scene with all the gas oil industry signs on the White House lawn and the background chorus chanting Four more Years! Four More Years!

I think that scene along is worth a gazillion bucks just running it endlessly over and over. Like that annoying Head ON commercial.

Sometimes repetition is good.

Privatization of Social Security is good but we have better:

John McCain said "Social Security is a disgrace." he is against our repaying the prior generation for what they gave us and against our wanting our parents and grandparents to be secure.

I call upon all those who oppose a national medical plan and social security to do without them. I have yet to hear of any conservative sending their social security back to the government.

Most of the post 65 that say they have private medical plans only have supplemental plans - that rely on Medicare. Without it their premiums would be in the thousands of dollars.

I suppose it's better to be a "summer blockbuster" rather than a "bust" at the box office??

But, it seems to me that any state that wants nuclear power should have to vote to store the waste somewhere in their state. They should be educated to the dangers. If they cannot find a suitable place to store it, they should not ask someone else to hide it for them.

Insanity has been defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Why should anyone expect anything to be different with McCain than with Bush? Or maybe they like what has happened to our country under Bush??

I absolutely agree that nuclear waste should have to be kept in the state it was produced in. And if it's not safe enough to do so, then they shouldn't have a nuclear facility there either.

I REALLY want somebody to put McCain on the spot with his 45 new nuclear power plant promise as part of his energy policy - "Sen. McCain what do you plan to do with all the nuclear waste coming from these new plants?"

Perfect timing might be during one of the debates.

I REALLY want somebody to put McCain on the spot with his 45 new nuclear power plant promise as part of his energy policy

I said something similar the first time McCain unveiled his "45 new nuke plants" plan...

Obama could land a wicked blow here by simply asking McCain to list the 45 cities where he plans to build these nuke facilities.

I'm sure Obama's people have thought of this. It is an opening the size of Shaun Hannity's mouth.

so Obama is batman? I'll take that.

According to conservative pundits, Bush is Batman. Obama is the filmic world he exists in.

But it's a stupid swipe. Batman and Wall-E were hits, Pineapple Express doing crazy numbers, the counter programming (Mamma Mia, Kit Kittredge, Sisterhood 2, SATC) have performed well, and even some of the arthouse films are getting notice and it's not even September. There have been an unusual number of quality movies this summer for a variety of audiences.

Even not-so-good movies (Hancock) made money.

BAD BAD analogy.

Obama is the summer schlock-buster. McCain is the summer schlock-sucker.

The Joker was the draw.

Obama = The Joker.

Okeydokey.

McCain 08 is like Tomb Raider: Pandora's Box. You think, "what the hell, it's summer and it can't possibly be worse than the original, right?" and then it is.

And McCain probably baby-sat The Mummy.

well, he is older than Frankenstein, or something...

Not really, when you consider that we saw McCain's "trailer" back in 2000. And that was when he really had something to say rather than using Character Assassination as his platform.

Nobody wants a whiner as their President, and that's about all McCain has to offer at this point in the race.

Well, if McCain likes the summer blockbuster metaphor, Obama is The Dark Knight and McCain could be The Love Guru, but that comparison would be too insulting to poor Mike Myers.

PD: To David Gregory, just stop it.
Don't even try it. That's not journalism, friend.
It's a Edwards' personal issue and that's it.

It's people like Gregory who give imbeciles a bad name. If he says it's a problem, Obama has nothing to worry about.

Senator McCain accepted the New Orleans / Google offer to Debate, Why did not Oilbama?
Could it be because he can’t debate without teleprompters? Or maybe because he doesn’t know his own policies! Does he even have any of his own policies? Is he still borrowing them from Hillary? Is it because he keeps flipping and flopping everyday? What ever the reason, it isn’t a good one I am sure! Oilbama is too chickenshit to debate.

Hey, that's clever; you took "oil" and "Obama" and made...

No, I'm just kidding.

lulz

The only good thing to come of this Edwards mess is that he shared the stage with Oilbama when he endorsed him. Thank god he did not endorse Hillary. Edwards is just another typical scumbag Oilbama supporter who stands by Oilbama's vote for Dick Cheneys Big Oil Energy Bill.

Why not, BillC? I am sure your Hillary and Bill have more affinity for the Edwards Family, than previously thought. After all both families know about being the kanoodler and the kanoodlee.

I suspect that image, Obama & Edwards, will start re-appearing soon.

That's about all McCain and the GOP can do without royally stepping in it themselves. Here's hoping they overplay their hand.

I'm waiting to see the press go after McCain over his secrect fling next.

"The only good thing to come of this Edwards mess is that he shared the stage with Oilbama when he endorsed him. Thank god he did not endorse Hillary."

The clumsy desperation occasionally shown by Hillary dead-enders literally knows no bounds - the one good thing to come out of this Edwards mess is that it opens the door for intellectual knuckle-draggers such as yourself to publicly embarrass themselves. Shut the fuck up jackass.

DumbBillC (see what I did there, pretty damn clever of me) is only trying to pit Obama supporters against Clinton supporters as pathetically obvious as he is about it. Typical GOP flamethrower troll.

I see the Republicans trolls are out...geez, I am surprised that after the Ohio debacle, and the Sargeant story, Mcbushsame has still some supporters...
What is it going to take for them to pack their bags?

Yeah, this thread topic is a drag.

I think this would be a better topic:
http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/08/obamas_olympic_ad_on_energy.php

A summer blockbuster? Sure. How about Star Wars? Show that one in a movie theater anywhere, anytime, and you'd fill the place.

I can't believe that Amy Silverman's profile of McMajorShit published in the Phoenix New Times News on August 7th has sunk beneath the waves so quickly. It reads as being balanced and presents him in a DEVASTATING light. She has a longtime perspective on his career centering in Arizona and has covered his activities for nearly three decades from Phoenix. After reading it, one understands why the Nancy Reagan endorsement last month was such an ICY affair. Apparently, the lady in red loathes him. It was all political expediency.

Please distribute widely!

Typical loser Obamabots who cheered madly with glee when Edwards endorsed Oilbama are now desperately trying to link Edwards to everyone else, proving to be the most transparent of losers.

It's funny, Jon Stewart remarked about the same thing (the bad poker face) when McCain was meeting with the Dalai Lama. Said he was like a kid at a rest home, he looked so uncomfortable.
