Election Central Morning Roundup
Did McCain Web Ad Paint Obama As The Antichrist?
The Wall St. Journal reports this morning that the new McCain Web ad likening Obama to a messianic figure could have a hidden message: Obama is the Antichrist! "There are way too many things to just be coincidence," said Dem consultant Eric Sapp, pointing to common imagery between the ad and the popular Left Behind novels.
Obama On Vacation
Barack Obama is taking time off the trail for a week-long vacation in Hawaii with his family, starting today. "During the middle of a campaign you are always worried about taking some time off - that's the nature of the job," Obama told reporters this week. "But you know I have been going pretty much straight for 18 months now."
Hillary Campaigning On Obama's Behalf Today
Hillary Clinton is hitting the campaign trail today on behalf of the absent Obama, and you can bet her performance will be scrutinized for any hint of insufficient enthusiasm as she rallies her own supporters to his cause. Hillary will be holding a rally in Las Vegas, scheduled to begin at 3:15 p.m. ET.
McCain In Iowa And Arkansas Today, Will Speak With Media
John McCain is making a stop today at the Iowa State Fair, courting voters in a perennial swing state that went narrowly for George W. Bush in 2004 but where polls currently have Barack Obama ahead. Later on he'll be in Rogers, Arkansas, where he'll hold a media availability scheduled for 5:20 p.m. ET.
Clinton Delegates' Role At Convention Still Being Mulled
Democrats are still sorting through what accommodations will be made at the convention for Hillary Clinton and her delegates. One Hillary supporter told the Washington Post that a full roll call to symbolically allow Hillary to receive votes is still seen as an important goal: "Moving beyond the convention, if they were not allowed to vote there would be a lot of resentment."
Freshman GOP Congressman Defeated In Primary
Freshman Republican Congressman David Davis of Tennessee, who won his primary in 2006 with only 22% in a very crowded field, lost his fight for a second term last night in a two-way race. With 100% of precincts reporting for this safe seat, local mayor and 2006 candidate Phil Roe has won by a margin of 500 votes out of about 51,000 cast.

Arghh...these delegates talking about Hillary and their "resentment."
At a certain point someone has to tell these people that it's about the issues and the millions of people at home and abroad who are going to be affected by them, not a personality contest.
You'd think that someone who made it to the point of delegate would understand that, but clearly you'd be wrong.

There has beem a concerted effort to create chaos at the convention by having dittohead delegates pose as Hillary Democrats.

"dittohead delegates" Uh, doesn't your party leadership appoint the delagates? I know at our district convention we had about 15 who were competeing to go and we selected 2 and one alternate...since we voted on it none of the "Bone head Ron Paul" nuts are going...

I don't really know how it works. But I do know here in Wisconsin we recently (and finally) stripped a Hillary delegate who had pledged to vote for McCain of her delegate status.
August 8, 2008 9:58 AM | Reply | Permalink
Our delagates are still "committed" to Mike Huckabee but he's already come out and told his delegates to back McCain, like Romney's...Hillary could end all the BS by coming out and saying that Obama is 'the' nominee and all of her delegates are released to vote for him...

No she cannot. For that to happen she would have to act like a grown up and that is clearly beyond her capabilities.

You already know what's going to happen. The McCain campaign will attack Obama for taking a vacation in beautiful Hawaii while Americans are struggling to afford gas and find jobs. He'll be called Elitist and his vacation will be tarnished as distasteful.
Then, next week, McCain will take a vacation, on his wife's private jet.

It sounds like Barack, Michelle and the girls are taking a family vacation. Is it Obama's fault that his family lives in Hawaii?
August 8, 2008 9:14 AM | Reply | Permalink
Exactly. Whenever anyone attacks his Hawaiian vacation just say that he's visiting his grandmother, ya know, who raised him after his father left.

Not at all...just responding to previous comments.. I guess we could actually go over each verse in Revelations and try to decide whether or not Obama is the antichrist....or we could roll our eyes and say "Please....has it really come to this?" which was my attempt with my reference to "The Omen." ...the one above was alluding to Obama's description of his own grandmother in his "can't we all just get along?" speech...

Someone mentions Obama and his extended family and you bring up the "typical white" comment. Someone mentions the antichrist and you point out that kid in the movie was white. It just seem noticable to me that on two different race-neutral topics you found a way to bring up the fact that Obama wasn't white.

Actually, someone suggested he use the "visiting his grandmother" line to diffuse any critcism of the Hawaii trip. My point was "you mean the grandmother he threw under the bus?" However, since I hate to use "threw under the bus" I tried to avoid it but get the point across with Obama's description of her. I guess I should've gone with the "under the bus" though cuz I would've ony used it once (instead of three times now).
August 8, 2008 9:49 AM | Reply | Permalink
Whether he threw her under the bus is debatable. I'm one of those who believe he was articulating the reality of a very complex situation in our society/culture as we try to hate the sin but love the sinner.

Me too. I have two very racist grandparents, but I love them as family. Such is America. Incidentally, there are no buses where they live.

I think Hillary's going to be great this week. I strongly prefer Obama as a candidate, and was deeply annoyed by some of her campaign's moves, but I think she is a policy-engaged patriot who cares about the country and knows what's at stake in November, and will go to the mat to help Obama get it done. I hope Obama's fans give her the unreserved cheers and thanks she deserves for doing this.

I certainly will if she does. So far all I have heard from her and her surrogates is how we have to show her the proper respect to earn her facing the reality that she lost. Respect is not given it is earned. She could earn mine at anytime by telling her deadender supporters to get with the program and stop whining.
Was seeing her slash and burn comments featured in McCain's last ad not enough to show her how destructive her behavior has been?

The right-wing finds Hillary irresistible. If she is really out front and center campaigning hard for Obama AND the media cover it, it might actually take some heat off him and give him a chance to relax. Just so long as he doesn't go wind-surfing...

I believe the Obama supporters will give credit to Hillary if credit is due ... however she has pulled some dirty punches, has definitely displayed openly that she is a poor loser and her husband is determined by all means to get a Clinton back in the White House ... This leaves a lot of people with very heavy doubts. I can only hope all people put the importance ans the needs of our country before a personality contest.

I think Obama's biggest challenge is the idea of change not McCain. He needs to convince people not that change is necessary (most of us know that it is) but that change will be real and lasting and beneficial and won't backfire and that he is the right person to bring it about.
We "believe" in change but are nevertheless afraid of it.
Change is hard. It requires work and more than a little courage. Like democracy itself, if we don't breathe life into it through vigilant action, it dies. It's just a really good idea. And nothing changes. It, in fact, gets worse.
Change is hard because it is very tempting to stay inside and close the doors and hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Someone else will take care of it. Uncle John will take care of it.
Only this day is different.
McCain and his merry band of power brokers (Frank's "Wrecking Crew")have ripped the roof off our homes and exposed us to the elements: poverty is real. Getting sick and not getting better is real. War war war is real and we're getting soaked.
McCain's gambit is to convince people that staying home in your shelterless house is better than going out and working with your neighbors to fix it. He wants us to close our eyes and pretend our way to a better life. Go shopping and don't worry so damn much. We're Americans. We do no wrong.
McCain needs us to, in effect, vote against our best interests because he has no platform.
Obama's challenge is to convince people that being awake is our only alternative and that our survival is in our own hands.
That's a big challenge and McCain's strategy is to undermie it.
But as long as Obama can set the tone of this campaign, Hawaii should not be a probelm. He used to live there afterall. And if Clinton is everything that she says she is and her supporters say she is, then we should have nothing to worry about when she takes the podium in his absence.
I remember the time when Obama just brushed off the jabs from Clinton like a little unsightly dandruff on his jacket.
He needs to do that with McCain because that's all it is.
Sorry this is so long.
Carry on.
