Dems Open Major Populist Offensive Over McCain's Houses Gaffe
The Democrats are going after John McCain over some choice quotes he gave in a Politico interview on the subject of wealth -- lines that could seriously undermine his attempts to cast Barack Obama as the man living a "grand" lifestyle.
The DNC is already blasting out to reporters two key comments. First, McCain was asked how many houses he owns. "I think -- I'll have my staff get to you," McCain said. "It's condominiums where -- I'll have them get to you."
Then there's McCain's ideas on the subject of what it means to be rich -- following up on his $5 million threshold from the Rick Warren interview and the arguments over what constitutes taxation of the wealthy.
"I define rich in other ways besides income," he said. "Some people are wealthy and rich in their lives and their children and their ability to educate them. Others are poor if they're billionaires."
From the DNC's release: "John McCain's Message to Working Families: Money -- Don't Worry About It -- You're Rich in Other Ways."
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, a top Obama surrogate and potential Veep, is already blasting away at McCain: "He couldn't count high enough apparently to even know how many houses he owns."
Surely these McCain quotes will get every bit as much attention as John Edwards' $400 haircut, right?
Late Update: Here's video of Tim Kaine this morning:

This looks like the first big screw up of the campaign. Thank you, doddering old man.

The branding must begin. Two simple points:
1) McCain is out of touch at home.
2) McCain is reckless abroad.
It's as simple as that, it's true, and it reminds you of a certain President we all know.

Not the first by a long shot, but a gaffe that they cannot counter.
Ford did not lose reelection because he pardoned Nixon, IMO. He lost because he was portrayed as a bumbling idiot (even though he was not), because no one wants a President who is a bumbling idiot like the one we have right now.
Kerry should have used this tactic in 2004.
McBush IS a bumbling idiot, so all Obama has to do is take luny quotes like this from McBush's own mouth and shove it down the Republican's throats, which is EXACTLY what he is doing.
I was a little worried that McBush would blunt the "old, tired" mantra of the Obama campaign by announcing he was running for one term only, but it appears that he is not going to do that either.

Don't agree with you on Ford. I was an adult during this mess and I remember it well. There was widespread anger that Nixon received a pardon from Ford. It was elitism at its finest hour. I contend that the primary reason Ford lost his elecion was exactly what folks were angry about--the Nixon pardon.
Do not underestimate just how visceral the anger at Nixon has been. The "resurrection of Nixon" was attempted several times and it always failed.

I agree. Visceral it was. I remember our softball game with co-workers in Grant Park Chicago stopping to listen and a portable radio turned up to max volume. And then a round of applause that could be heard throughout the park. It still amazes me that there is something as disgraceful as a "Nixon Library".

I hope we hammer this for a few more days so we go into the convention with some good energy. And remember, the GOP has already likened their convention to "a graveyard" so if we can reverse the recent movement towards McBush and leave them deflated after a month of surreptitious attacks, it will highlight just how pathetic and desperate they really are (recent gains notwithstanding).

This is how campaigns are won. You pray for a quote like this, especially with the economy tanking and home foreclosures on every block.

Dude, it's not about McCain's personal wealth. It's that he DOESN'T EVEN KNOW how many houses he owns! That shows (a) his lack of attention to detail and (b) a disconnect with his own real-life issues and explains why he thinks the economy is great and home foreclosures aren't a problem.
August 21, 2008 10:20 AM | Reply | Permalink
LOL, what a bunch of crap!
All he has to do now is say - look, I'm talking about the future direction of the country, keeping Americans safe and the Democrats respond by counting my personal money?
This is just reinforcing the "not ready" meme.
I thought yesterday's ideas about exaggerating his national security advantage into a "trigger-happy" caricature and linking that to weakness on economy was a really smart idea.
Because it suggests that while McCain is ready to lead, he would lead straight into a disaster.
But it seems that Democrats are hell-bent of sticking to small change and ineffective attacks. Look how well coordinated this house-counting is. On all blogs and House Dems, all orchestrated

It's the economy stupid.
McCain isn't ready to lead on the issue voters are most concerned about because he's so out of touch with the trials and tribulations of the American people that he doesn't even know how many homes he owns. Can this guy real feel/understand your foreclosure pain?
This storyline plays perfectly into his support of tax cuts for the rich and kickbacks to big oil.
I'm into the out of touch at home + reckless abroad = not remotely competent to lead attack line.
August 21, 2008 10:54 AM | Reply | Permalink
It DOES address that question. How can an out of touch millionaire who doesn't even know how many houses he has appreciate the plight of those in the middle class who are struggling to make house payments? He's so out of touch, that he's not ready to lead. Remember, it's all in our heads.

I think there are much better ways to take on McCain and they were discussed here yesterday. I think this is not one of them. If it becomes part of a larger strategy, fine. My problem with it is very simple:
- it SOUNDS defensive
- it's not unmistakably about economy
Obama's strategy HAS to connect all the dots (economy, security, anything) with the fact that he is (a) ready and (b) more competent than McCain.
This line of attack just barely falls into (b)
August 21, 2008 11:30 AM | Reply | Permalink
I don't think it's a matter of how much more competent Obama is as McCain - this quote reduces it to a question of whether McCain is competent or not.
And after sitting through months of gibberish about arugula and herbal tea as the entire basis of McCain's campaign, I think Obama's campaign is due a little fun along those lines.
McCain handed this one to the Dems. It isn't Obama's fault that McCain has to check with his staff on the question of how many houses he owns.

McCain is a liar, out of touch, not in control of his own campaign and failing. He decided to go with a house of cards attack and screwed it up. He showed his hand and now Obama has every right to call the bluff and win the money.
This has nothing to do with jealousy and has everything to do with be beaten at your own game. If you want to play the gambit and you get caught no one feels bad for you.

Check out the full quote from Kaine below, posted by flufferwink. He's not just saying, "McCain is rich". He ties it all back to the struggles Americans are facing today and how McCain's solutions to working Americans' struggles is to provide more breaks to the wealthy.

There isn't any need to exaggerate McCain's excessive focus on military force and sabre rattling . Just calling more attention to what is there is sufficient.
People want a President that understands their concerns and is in touch with their struggles. A person who is worth tens of millions and doesn't even know how many houses he owns is very far from the economic world most of us live in. I mean really, to not even know? Thats a pretty basic fact about his personal financial situation. He is even out of touch with that.
We democrats cannot let him get away with ANYTHING. No freebies. There is much material to work with to show that he is much less than his image. No need to exaggerate, just don't drop the ball.

That the GOP candidate for president is so out of touch that he thinks our economy is doing just fine, thinks you aren't rich until you hit $5M in annual income, and doesn't even know how many homes he owns isn't petty, small, or desperate - it gets right to the heart of the matter....on the economy - voters top concern, by far - McCain is completely disinterested, uninformed, and would be a disaster as president. It's a perfect soundbite to catch voters' attention - many will think, "is he kidding?" - after which you can then attack McCain's policies. You need a hook. The celeb thing was stupid and juvenile but it was a hook that allowed McCain to then talk about how Obama is inexperienced and not ready to lead. (in his opinion, of course, not mine)

When McCain keeps up with the "Celebrity Obama is raising taxes on your family because celebrity's love to spend" message, this is a perfect counter.
It'd be a great ad: McCain thinks that if you earn $5 million a year, then you're rich. Below that, you're just struggling. A million a year? How many houses will that buy you? Probably not enough to lose count of them all. But really, the rich are unhappy, unlike folks like this family (shot of the Cratchits from an old "Christmas Carol" movie). Vote McCain -- God bless us, everyone!

This is an excellent opening, Obama and Dems need to push it for all it's worth. It's not petty at all- the guy can't even keep track of how many houses he has - plus, his "spiritual" answer about the true meaning of wealth is total BS for a candidate. McCain's policies will help the rich a lot and the middle class, not. (private health care accounts? Are you kidding???)
His dodging of questions on facts and figures (in this interview and at Saddleback, etc.) shows he doesn't really care about these bread and butter issues. I am having a hard time paying bills, and to me, every dollar counts! McCain doesn't care about me, that much is clear.

Finally an attempt to brand him beyond just as a third Bush term. Keep up the Bush tactics, but you need to expand on it, make the country think he's an asshole, beyond policy decisions.
Liberals know what an asshole McCain is: the constant off color comments, the sleazy deals, the disgusting two-faced nature of his 'straight talk' image, etc, etc. There is a huge laundry list of legitimate character problems John McCain has, and no one seems ready to call him on them.
This is about damn time. McCain had it right with the celeb ad - a personality smear, followed by a lie about policy. Obama can use this same tactic, but he doesn't have to lie because McCain's truth is bad enough as it is!

It's actually great, fortunate timing that they released a few really great ads (Ralph Reed/Atl, Yucca Mtn/Nevada) just when the Dems were getting restless, and yet they all of a sudden have at least 3 more angles of attack on top of that (houses, what is rich, and the draft) that REALLY play into the overall Dem memes of "It's The Economy Stupid, Again" and "McCain's a Dangerous Hothead".

My whole point was that Obama was going to do exactly what you were saying he should do, but at his own time.
It's frustrating to watch this campaign work, because they are disciplined beyond belief. The result is it creates the appearance of inaction when they're actually looking for an undeniable line of attack - which McCain gave them on a silver platter yesterday.
And because of their holding back until a week before the conventions, I'm expecting McCain to go into his convention with much higher negatives than he thought he would.

Awesome. Great 'surrogacy' from Kaine.
McCain is filthy rich. Not a little rich, but obscenely rich. He got his money and political connections by dumping his loser first wife (seriously injured in car accident) and having affair with rich heiress.
(And it bears pointing out that his wife got all that money from 1) promoting alcohol to underager drinkers at college sports despite protests from many and 2) sales of America businesses to Europeans.
Selling Budweiser to Europeans might make the McCains even richer -- hey, buy yourself another jet!!-- but it stinks for anyone who cares about America having any companies left after 8 years of GOP misrule.)

I think this is actually a good place to start. People are really hurting economically right now. My family is well off in terms of income but we have HUGE debt. The thought of someone having TEN houses while we are struggling to keep ours- it makes me angry. I can imagine it does for other people too. Think about the people you personally know who are significantly wealthier than you- ever feel resentment? Now magnify it because you don't personally know McCain and he is richer than anyone you know. Pair that with his being out of touch- doesn't know how we feel- will give tax breaks to people like himself and Obama's story of rising from nothing- single mom, food stamps etc- I think it is a winner. It ties policy to natural resentment and people's feeling of insecurity- not about national security but financial security. I like this way of going- it also undermines the Obama celebrity meme without addressing it head on.

McCain went on, "As for me personally, I'm rich in the 'I left my first wife after she became disabled and married a woman half my age who was worth $100 million' kind of way. But really, since our annual income doesn't quite reach the $5 million mark, it gets tough some months when we run up a $900,000 credit card balance, sometimes it even takes two months to pay it off."

This is gold. Sure it's silly, but so was Kerry's "I was for it before I voted against it." This needs to be repeated ad nauseum. It's the founding block of "McCain's an uber-rich guy who has no clue what it's like for a regular Joe." There's plenty of other threads to weave together.
McCain started the whole "grand" lifestyle meme. It's time to hoist him on his own petard.

Let's rephrase the question:
Senator McCain, how many of your homes will have to be foreclosed before you are homeless?
August 21, 2008 10:58 AM | Reply | Permalink
OK, Obama campaign, make sure you keep emphasizing this point. You've had multiple opportunities in the past to drive home an unflattering message about "nation of whiners" McCain, but you let those opportunities evaporate.
John McCain can't keep track of how many homes he owns. Rich, to John McCain, is someone making 5 million a year. John McCain is completely out of touch with the average American. Simple, understandable, and easy to repeat.
Plus, it reinforces the "John McCain is confused" theme that was put into play six weeks ago (and dropped, as usual).

Obama got a favorable rate perhaps because he had good credit. Just like I did when I bought my house. I pay my bills on time and because of that I am seen as less of a foreclosure risk. Simple economics. And as for McCain, if your wife is worth $100 million, you don't need mortgages. Seriously, that is your response?

And, by the way, I don't know what you call "interesting aspects" but owning homes because you ditched your first crippled wife and got a license to marry the new younger RICH one before your divorce was even final is pretty interesting to me. McCain's never earned any money himself, it's all Cindy's. He's never done anything but work for the government, which doesn't pay very well as we all know -- albeit his lobbyist friends may have helped him out with a few extra perks here and there, and maybe the Keating Five stuff wound him up with a few extra bucks , or maybe he just hoped it would. But, basically, the guy's a gigolo.

It is kind of a sad commentary that the reason this story will get so much is play is because of its core absurdity, which gives it far more traction in the media than the populist symbolism the Dems are attaching to it. After all, the underying information (how many homes McCain actually owns) doesn't matter very much to the media. Nor do McCain's policies relating to wealth. All that matters is that John McCain said a silly, silly thing that makes the political class chuckle. To the extent McCain's gaffe has any meaning whatsoever to Halperin and his ilk, it is that McCain was unprepared for an easy question.
Of course, it is Karl Rove's world and we just live in it. Absurdity, mockery, gaffes, gotcha moments, and symbolic revelations of "character" now trump policy and substance on every level of the debate. And Saint John McCain just walked right into a statement of truly devine mockery. That his silly statement will now be construed as revealing of his underlying "character" is simply the Pavlovian response of the Rove-trained media. They don't believe it, but they know how to follow the script.

Come on, fogu2, you might be a partisan, but you know the rules of the game. The true number of houses McCain owns doesn't matter. Nor does the "populist" symbolism the Dems are attaching to his gaffe. ALL that matters is that McCain said something weird and goofy and absurd. Nothing more.
It is just like Obama's "air in your tires" statement. The underlying truth didn't matter - all that mattered was that Obama said something kind of goofy and weird that was easy to mock.
I agree the Republicans will try to connect it to Obama's fishy loan, but I doubt it will work. The story is "McCain said something stupid," nothing more, nothing less. His best bet it is to distract the media with a new story, because the stupidity of this story is what gives it legs.

It's two pronged attack on two very tangible McCain weaknesses.
One, he's an out of touch multi-millionaire who has no sense of the economic hardships of the middle class.
Two, he's so old and senile he can't even keep remember something as simple as how many houses he owns.
If you're in an offensive state of mind, Cain is good for one of these verbal or mental blunders every few days. I have no idea why it took Obama this long to get into this attacking mindset, but better late than never.

The fact is not everyone can have 10 houses. Every xtra house that he owns just makes the american dream for the middle class that much harder to get,....it plays into the corporate profits theme.
Since McCain's camp mentioned it: Where does McCain go on vacation to? I would be surprised that it's only ten houses,...maybe just 10 in the US. Does he have a villa next to Romneys on the riveria? 100 million can go a long ways,...even despite the downfall of the dollar since Bush took office.

...I am not sure the average American buys your logic.
It took construction workers to build those condos, so Cindy paid their salary by purchasing the house...
...does she employ 10 maids? 10 Gardeners? 10 interior designers?
Me buying a house has nothing to do with your ability to buy one. In fact, if you are construction worker, it may very well help you.
This is the problem because too many Democrats think the economy is a zero sum game. Democrat economists, like me, get red-faced mad when we see that.
The more I spend, the more jobs I create, which in turn allows those people to spend...and so on and so on.
It is a fallacy that one man's fortune makes another man poor. Let the man be wealthy, just make him pay taxes commensurate with his wealth, but do not blame poverty on him...

I am not sure how fruitful this line of attack is, and Kaines (can't count high enough) comment was less than Presidential.
I am sorry guys, but there is a huge risk here. Trying to portray McCain as a bumbling slobbering old man might seem to make sense, until we have another Saddleback moment where the media agrees that it was Obama who was bumbling around giving meandering answers.
If the slobbering old man bests Barack (or even matches him) in the debates, and I am not so naive as to think it might not happen, then what will that make all of this look like? Barack gets beaten by the bumbling old man?
THEY ARE LOWERING EXPECTATIONS FOR MCCAIN!!!
Bush artfully did this in 2000 when he talked down his abilities to debate. The left relentless replayed Bushism after Bushism until America was convinced he could not speak English.
Then he proceeded to come out and hold his own against Gore, while Gore went off like an obnoxious grad student. Gore probably actually won on points, but the fact that Bush did not pee his pants made the perception seem that Bush actually beat him.
The same thing happened against Kerry.
Also, I am not sure playing up the age thing is a good idea politically. This is an aging country and they will turn out in droves.
I am astonished at how giddy everyone is over this ad. It is not even clear that it is factually correct.
According to the Politico, McCain does not actually own any houses himself, his wife's family owns them...so are we attacking Cindy McCain for owning too many condo's? Is that our strategy, to attack Cindy McCain's condos?
It is frivolous and reduces Barack's stature. It gave a wonderful opening to the Rezko mess, which almost nobody in the mainstream knew about. They will now...AHHHHHH!
Attacking Cindy McCain's condos vs. Scrutiny (and possibly a debate question) on Rezco is not a winning trade-off folks. The Rezko thing is an ugly affair for which Barack does not have any real defense. Rezko was indeed a scumbag.
Also, it is well documented that McCain goes everywhere doing unscripted town halls, I cannot wait until the do an ad that compares the number of town halls Barack has done vs. McCain.
It is going to be real hard to keep up this "out of touch" message when the other guy has done 5 times as many town hall events.
Sorry to give you a dose of reality, but I still think Barack's team has their head screwed on backwards.
They have done little right since the primary...

...and this $5 million thing guys...come on.
Every channel showed the footage of the event and it was obvious McCain was joking. FactCheck.org is already call him Barack the Butcher for taking quotes out of context.
The problem is that nobody believes that McCain actually thinks that because he was joking. He even said "they will use that one out of context".
That prompted the local Denver affiliate to do a spot on how quotes get taken out of context...AND THEY USED THAT EXAMPLE!
...and here we are with the mighty David Axelrod saying with a straight face that this is what McCain actually meant. It diminishes credibility, and the fact that McCain said they would use that actually makes this look worse.
Lastly, when do people equate being rich with not understanding what is going on in the world?
When did Americans start equating being rich with being stupid...
People EXPECT leaders to be wealthy. THEY ARE NEVER GOING TO VOTE FOR THEIR NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR.
If people expect McCain to be rich, what good does it do to confirm it?
...and he is not even in the top 20 wealthiest Senators.
Why can't David Axelrod produce a decent ad...really. Why? Just someone tell me why?
The fact that you guys are scripting your own ads for them proves that nobody has any confidence in these guys....NONE!

Who cares what factcheck.org has to say about anything? No one pays attention to them?
Guess what, McCain is an elitist with a rich heiress wife. Kerry was portrayed as an elitist, with a rich heiress wife- he was sound ly beaten by a member of the Bush family (can you say uber-elite?) who likes getting photographed on the porch of his Texas ranch in his shirt sleeves and says "folks" so often he slips and calls terrorists "folks".
This shit works. Not only that - it's friggin relavent and true. McCain went to an AFL-CIO function and told a bunch of $20 - $40/hr skilled tradesmen that they wouldn't do mindless meanial labor in hot weather for $50/hr.
Oh yeah? I am a technician that works on roofs and in boiler rooms of industrial buildings for less than $50/hr in my check. Temperatures are usually between 90 and 110 degrees and it's way more humid than Arizona, and I'm usually carting and hoisting around 100lb plus peices of equipment while diagnosing and repairing complex electrical and mechanical problems in these conditions. I am at the top end of the wage range for my job and there are few jobs that pay more.
It' hard to figure out which is worse: McCain thinking $50/hr (100 grand a year) is not worth working your ass off for, or McCain thinking that no American workers are willing to work their asses off for a nice wage.
No one can deny that McCain thinks US workers won't work when conditions are harsh, even if the pay is substantial.
I am stunned that he is even able to show his face in a crowd after this kind of pure working class bashing.
For any of you Obama supporters who think a wealthy career politician who doesn't even keep count of the multiple plush living compounds he and his wife keep all around the country, and has the nerve to tell me that the reason non citizens are needed to keep fresh food on their table is because no Americans will work for them at any price, I say F*** you -- vote for the out of touch warmongering rich douchebag then.

How many houses does John own?
Let's see. Probably zero; hard number to remember. First wife Carol received two houses as part of the divorce settlement so John could marry Cindy Lou. Cindy Lou must have realized something about John as they had a prenuptial agreement where she kept most of the Hensley family assets, their finances are separate, and they file separate income tax returns.
