Dems: McCain A "Maverick No More"

Here's the DNC's Web ad responding to an earlier McCain Web ad that featured a bunch of Dems praising McCain...

The DNC response ad features the same Dems from the McCain ad making the point that he used to be a maverick, but is now a "maverick no more."

And the maverick wars -- in which the Dems work to tarnish McCain's maverick brand while McCain and the Repubs feverishly buff it -- continue apace.

is this the ad?

i hope it's not. if you are trying to convince democrats that sen. mccain is no longer a "maverick", then this ad will do just fine. but if you're trying to convince independents and republicans of that fact, putting up sen. clinton, sen. kerry, and chairman dean might not be the way to go.

i think a more effective ad would have the arguments that they deliver, but from a voice-over along with some pictures/stats of mccain voting in favor of bush/mccain standing with bush.

It's a web ad, so the audience is wonky.

Also, it's responding to a specific previous ad.

good point.

And once again I will post this vid as I think it's is both appropriate and damning and I wish somebody at the Obama Camp would pick it up -

I really hope they find a way to use that. Most devastatingly effective ad I've seen all year (perhaps Fox hasn't given them permission to use it?). I can only hope that's one of the big guns they plan on rolling out closer to November.

avatar

i'm not really up on the law here. would fox have to give permission? i would think that obama could use a clip that short w/o permission under fair use. anybody know?

avatar

yes! i was going to post basically the same post. that's such a good clip. why on earth would they not use it. it would fit perfectly instead of that stupid bush quote.

How about adding comments by Republicans who don't trust McCain. Maybe there's no videotape of Thad Cochran saying "the thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine, He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.”
The text on screen would do.

avatar

Text wouldn't do, because people generally won't read it. If you can't make your argument without text, you're not ready for a TV commercial.

The most effective part of this ad, in my view, is the music. Sets the right tone for the ad. But I'm not sure the ad itself is really worthy of the music.

All statements taken from the HuffPo - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/07/dems-praise-mccain-in-new_n_117457.html

Howard Dean:

"John McCain a maverick? The John McCain of 2000 wouldn't even consider voting for the John McCain of 2008. The American people are learning that the John McCain of 2008 represents more of the same failed policies we've gotten from George Bush for the past eight years. Senator McCain is clearly in the tank for Exxon and big oil, for keeping our troops stuck in Iraq for decades to come, and for an economic policy that puts tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations above relief for hardworking families. John McCain has changed: he's taken the low road, leveling false, negative and misleading attacks against Barack Obama. John McCain is no more a maverick within the Republican Party than Dick Cheney is. He's just more of the same."

John Kerry:

"The McCain campaign is determined to give their Paris Hilton ad a run for its money in the desperation department, and they've succeeded only in shining a light on the fact that the John McCain of today is unrecognizable from the John McCain of just a couple years ago. The real question is what happened to the John McCain we used to know and why he changed overnight into a George Bush nominee with a Karl Rove campaign. The new John McCain supports the Bush tax giveaways for the wealthy he once denounced, opposes his own immigration bill, flip-flopped on torture, and runs negative ads after calling for an honorable campaign. Frankly, it tells you everything about this election that the McCain campaign spins its wheels recycling what we said about John McCain way back when while scrambling and sputtering to explain away Governor Pawlenty's praise of Barack Obama today."

Joe Biden:

"The John McCain of 2008 is not the maverick of 2000. On the most urgent national security challenges we face - Iraq, Iran and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan -there is no day light between George Bush and John McCain. He has embraced President Bush's failed policies and will continue them. It's unfortunate he's changed so much in just eight years."

Well citing the Huff Post, Joseph Romm has some basics for the campaign:

"While Obama is a terrific rhetorician, he and his ad team don't understand a core principle of rhetoric. Never repeat the word your opponent is trying to push. That is not just a basic tenet of the 25-century old art of persuasion, but a well-demonstrated principle of modern psychology.

Never say things like "They're going to say I'm a risky guy. What they're going to argue is I'm too risky." All that does is plant in the listener's mind the word "risky" associated directly with Obama. It's like saying, "I'm not a crook."

"The bottom line is you can't debunk a myth by verbally repeating it. This is actually very basic stuff, so it is surprising that neither Obama nor his team understand it.

It's why linguist George Lakoff titled his best-selling book, Don't think of an elephant. If I say that to you, you will think of an elephant. Negatives carry very little rhetorical weight."

Never run an ad with a picture of your opponent that opens, "He's the original maverick" and ends "The original maverick?" That's especially true because "maverick" is such a strong and memorable word.

When voters go into the voting booth, especially the key voters the campaigns are targeting with these ads that don't actually pay close attention to the race, they focus on just a few key thoughts and words. The last thing you want to do is repeat and reinforce your opponent's message."

Good ad, good response. And pretty damn fast, to boot.

Ah, how stupid, stupid, stupid.

"Now that we're in the middle of election campaign, we have no choice but to flip-flop on McCain, sorry dear voters"

Wooden delivery of tin and tired talking points. And on top of it all, it's not credible in the least, as politicalnovice points out above.

What's with the freaking web ads, anyway?

The people who are going to watch them are already not fans of McCain.

Come on DNC, start putting ads out there on the TEE VEE. This one is too long and won't reach the intended audience...

avatar

The point is to get the cable news pundits talking. Free airtime.

(Anyway, the original McCain ad was a web ad, too.)

Ding, ding, ding!

we have a good bingo!

WTF? John mcCain was NEVER a maverick!

You mean, he wasn't in Top Gun?

The clip of McCain declaring how hard he worked to get Bush elected and re-elected, giggling semi-crazily with O'Reilly, would work better, IMHO.

Also, leave the names and titles off, most people wouldn't recognize Dean or Daschle, and would think it was "some expert" saying that about McCain.

John McCain -- Retired Maverick

This press release just out from the McSame campaign:

My friends... (grin)... You've known me as a maverick for many years.  Yes, almost an uncountable number of years.  But lately I've had to hang up my guns, and I think you deserve an explanation of why I've decided to retire.

You see, I'm now running for President.  There are rules about how I have to do that.  My handlers told me about them, but most of them I've forgotten.  One I do remember, though, is there's no maverickiness allowed.  No offense to Bret or Bart, but it's time to sing Happy Trails and ride into the sunset.

Another problem -- I'm sure you've noticed -- is that I've begun to slow down.  Having trouble remembering things.  I have to rely on my handlers to remind me of my current position on a lot of the issues.  So the mavericky bit has to go.  It's just too hard to remember what I'm supposed to be mavericky on and what I'm not.

More importantly, I've been having a harder time lately controlling my temper.  It'd be just awful to shoot the wrong guy by mistake.  Lots of bad publicity from that.  Just ask Dick PlausibleDeniability Cheney.

So that's why I'm hanging 'em up.  But don't you worry at all -- my reruns are still available on the internets.  I know 'cuz Cindy just showed me how to work the tubes!

Curious,,,, but there's a theme here. PBS ran a series of, I think, American Esperience, on Monday nights, on recent US Presidents. The one on Bush41 seems a parallel to McCain,,,, they tell the story of how Bush, in order to win, adopted the tacky attack motief,,,,, just like McCain is using, on pressure from a new set of advisors and 'the base'. If the episode is on archive at PBS, it is indeed an enlightening and morst curious tale to tell.

I'm kind of waiting for the GOP to screw McCain yet again and snatch the nomination away from him at the convention. Not that I can fathom any other member of the GOP who'd be able to take his place.

As someone who respected McCain at one time, I just find all of the current ads and the way that he's run his campaign very, very sad. I just don't want to see any of it.

He's becoming a Cautionary Tale, which is sad for him and also for the U.S. As for his lobbyist/staffers, screw them.

avatar

Who do you think would replace him? Jeb? I'd say W has ruined the Bush brand for good.

avatar

Good idea, terrible execution.

I'm not shedding any tears for those Dems or anyone who has mouthed the obligatory "maverick" or "war hero" memes.

Lies have consequences

Has the Top Gun - Maverick analogy been discussed/mentioned? An over simplified, Jerry Bruckheimer - Lt. Pete Mitchel- 'Top Gun'- McCain complex?

avatar

Uh...whoever thinks that Kerry would make a good dark horse VP candidate just has to watch that clip. The guy is an anchor who can't string three words together without sounding smug and self-important. Compare his delivery, and directness of message, to Daschle. No contest.

Kerry sucked as Presidential candidate. He would suck as a VP candidate.

The whole "maverick" thing is such bullshit. I don't think the Democratic Party should even lend that meme a bit of credence. John McCain has been the most ubiquitous presence on the Sunday morning hot-air circuit for 25 years. "Meet the Press", "Face the Nation", whatever...he's done it. Many times. At the very least, that shows that he's not a "maverick" at all, just another politician who's part of the problem. To any seasoned political observer, it's always been patently obvious that John McCain is driven by ambition, and a complete phony. To me, this ad seems kinda off-message.

Two MUST-READ articles spelling out the reasons why Obama can't drop McCain in the polls:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/joseph-romm/obamas-self-defeating-rhe_b_117463.html
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/drew-westen/why-voters-say-they-dont_b_117238.html

Same reasons Kerry (war hero) and Gore (Nobel Laureate) BOTH LOST TO A CHIMPANZEE.

Obama's campaign needs to WAKE UP and stop playing Little League ball!!!

Josh: can you make sure these articles get forwarded to the campaign? PLEASE!!?!?

We've just posted ringtone-ready audio from this spot over at Entertonement.
