CNN: McCain Picks Sarah Palin As Veep
CNN is reporting that a "senior campaign source" confirmed McCain's pick of the Alaska governor.
First thought: If McCain's entire campaign is premised on the idea that Obama lacks the commander-in-chief readiness for the presidency, how on earth can he possibly continue to make this argument when he's chosen Palin, who's been in high office only two years (half the time Obama has been a Senator) as a back-up commander in chief?
More soon.

You jokers have no idea what has just hit you!
first, this out of left field pick totally elipses any talk about Obama's convention. People will be spending next two days finding out who this hottie is? Trust me, she is as hot as any politician can get.
second, while Obama chose an old washington hand, McCain choose change, choose someone who really has balance her life and work - which most working women will definitely identify with.
third, you think this removes McCain's attack of Obama's inexperience? You must be kidding. Palin is McCain's under study and unless McCain dies in hte first week of assuming the office, she will have ample time to get up to speed. Obama on the other hand is the leading figure of a improbable Obama-Biden adiministration. McCain should have no qualm attacking Obama's lack of experience. Obama will cry: it is unfair, your vp choice has less experience! Biden on the other hand, has no way to attack Palin's inexperience. Doing so will only bring attention to his emperor's lack of it.
the forth point? You want to talk about experience? putting Obama's and Biden's together, they don't have Palin's executive experience. She ran Anchorage, she ran Alaska. what did Obama and biden run, their Senate office/
also do you think old white women have any qualm voting for the ticket now that they can see clearly a chance a woman in the White house?
finally, go ahead and talk your lung out of Palin's mini scandal. if you think the McCain team has not thoroughly vetted her background, you were simply more out of your mind than I ever thought.
I personally prefer Meg Whitman but Palin does have a more compelling personal story.
I love this pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go McCain-Palin, all the way to the big White House.

I mean...you're kidding, right? A creationist from Alaska with two years of experience will, as McCain's "understudy", learn how to fail to differentiate between Sunni and Shia, for example? And Obama and Biden, together, don't have her "executive experience?" And just so I'm sure...you're insulting women by thinking they're so easily bamboozled that putting ANY woman on a ticket will win their vote? Regardless of the issues espoused on the ticket? Finally, Anatomy 101 as to "talking our lung (sic) out"...most of us have two; but all of us together probably couldn't marshal together the hot air in your post. What exactly are they smoking out in your parts?

This would completely destroy McCain's experience narrative. He's moving to a change meme - he'll have to play this game on Obama's home court.

Moreover, since the CW says the VP candidate is supposed to be the attack dog, how's Palin going to criticize Obama for a lack of experience?
Although the McCain campaign will describe every criticism of Palin as sexist, so every McCain campaign talking point will boil down to the POW-sexist defense.

So true! McCain has just completely destroyed his own arguments against Obama and demonstrated his own piss-poor judgement, all in one deft stroke.
McCain must think that this choice will woo women voters who supported Clinton. But what about the history that those women voters had with Hillary, and the reasons they were so intent on electing her? Clinton was known for a long record of supporting women's and children's issues, something Palin just doesn't have. What, a 2 year experience as Governor can replace all the things that women voters loved about Hillary?
McCain must think women voters are stupid. There may be a few women who will fall for this, but most will see it as the cynical gambit that it is.
And what about her experience? With McCain at 72, there's much more chance than there ordinarily would be that this woman as VP would become President. What, he's gonna give her on-the-job training?
Poor McCain - he is so toast.

Grampy McSame just doesn't get it.
He "thinks" picking a woman will bring him the Hillary backers.
This smacks of Geraldine Ferraro redux given the scandal that she and her family used the governor’s office to carry out a vendetta against a policeman who was a former brother in-law, up to firing the public safety commissioner because he wouldn’t fire the trooper.

Yeah, that's a concern of mine as well. The Obama camp doesn't need to be seen as a bunch of misogynists. Then again, both Biden and Obama already have the benefit of running against a woman from the primaries.
I'd be curious to know how Obama/Biden are polling among women these days now that Hillary's given the nod to Obama.

What's funny is that this will motivate Hillary to campaign hard for Obama. If Hillary hated the idea of Obama picking Sebelius she must really be pissed off to see a pretty young thing get the chance to be a heartbeat away from the presidency. She is 44 years old. She was elected governor in November of 2006 and took office in January of 2007, meaning that she has been in that office only 1 year and 7 months. Her previous "experience" is as a member of the Alaska Oil and Gas Commission and, before that, on the Wasilla City Council. Fun facts about Wasilla:

No, you don't know anything about her and that's the point. She's media-friendly, and is popular in Republican AK, but still largely a ??? outside her home state, as far as the average American goes. She was being groomed as the next woman/younger demo-friendly face of the GOP (I caught her on either "The Daily Show" or "Colbert", and she didn't suck).
The problem is: there is no way in Hell the GOP expected to "roll her out" this soon. A clear signal of panic in the McCain camp, especially with McCain's "senior moment" with the TIME reporter, revealed yesterday. The old man ain't goin' four rounds (years). This is desperation.
Biden can wipe the floor with her, if: [a] He uses the word "EXPERIENCE" in the first 5-10 seconds of every response during their debate, and; [b] Regardless of anything that Palin wishes to talk about, he focuses like a laser beam on McCain's failings... like Obama did last night. He needs to put her in the position of doing nothing except defending McCain's personal weakness.
I hope for their sake the Dems don't fuck that up. It's easy, and it will finish McCain.

Oh absolutely, and you can bet the farm and the firstborn that they've already written that particular attack, in anticipation of the very first engagement with Palin: "You're a bunch of MISOGYNISTS! Why didn't you choose HILLARY? You SEXISTS!"
What makes me puke is that this subtly sends the message that no "girl" is strong enough to take the slings and arrows that come with a political war.
So it follows that any woman who actually gets swayed by such a campaign, on the grounds that they're standing up for "women", is really endorsing the fact that you should never be mean to a girl.
These people are evil. Late note: Obama campaign already walking back their earlier "experience" criticism, and kissing her butt.

Biden can't beat up her experience without questioning Obama's...if she's too inexperienced for the #2 slot he has to admit Obama's too inexperienced for the #1 slot. I see a perfect debate moment coming where he knocks her experience and she points out the she has more executive experience in Government than his running mate...who has "zero" to be exact.

I will bet you a bagel that the word "bold" is used often ("a bold choice..."); along with "young", "fresh", "maverick", and the argument that boy, the Dems had better watch their asses now, because the Women's Vote is up for grabs, fer sure.
Jesus could be running as a Democrat, and He'd have a tough time looking competent, in the eyes of the media. McCain could have sex with little boys on the front lawn of each of his eight houses, and POW-POW-POW. You already know this.
Stalin was right: it's who counts the votes that counts. But it's also who tells the story. And the guys telling the story are gonna give Palin all the handicap she needs, mark my words.

Agree totally. We're all saying WTF and that he seems desperate to us (and I'd wager he definitely is desperate), but you think the media is going to say anything even vaguely sexist or insulting about this one? Not on your life. They're all going to wet their knickers over her, and the Republican base seems to not care whether or not you even have a brain anyway, just so long as you come down against abortion and wave the flag.
And while the same women who got all high and mighty over Hillary Clinton's trip back to the back of the line should see this as the cheesy kind of pandering it is -- and the insult it is (Read: misogynist takes beauty queen as running mate!) will they? If she babbles some inanities that make her seem like a regular gal and plays up the governor who still has time for her 5 kids meme, who knows where it will go. She's lacking the victim (screwed like you) appeal that Clinton had, but if the Clinton grandmothers and waitresses are really angry still, none of this will matter to them.
I don't say be very afraid. But this is not something to simply laugh off -- especially since I understand her husband is some kind of Nascar dad's dream.

That was the first thing that came to mind. I thought Palin was a long shot until I read about her forcing someone to fire her sister's exhusband. That's petty small town corrupt politics. Alaska's politics seems to have been a cess pool of corruption. Does the Veco scandal touch her at all? It seems to have touched everyone else in Alaska.
I think Palin is pretty much token. There is no way he picked her with an eye to the possibility she will have to step in before his term is over.

The long primary, in Obama's case -- plus, frankly, race, which made the choice of a "wingman" important.
Age and health, in McCain's case.

McCain is an old 72. He was tortured (enhanced interrogated) for 5 years. He is a cancer survivor. His father and grandfather didn't live to the same ripe old age as his mother.
The Republican pick for VP this time is a damn big deal. If McCain is elected there is a real chance Palin will be president by 2012.

Or sooner. The actuarial charts don't favor McCain with his history of skin cancer. Not to mention the frequent memory lapses and general cluelessness.

Disagree. LBJ was definitely a big deal, headline news, and one could easily make the argument that the vice-presidency changed substantially under Eisenhower, when he sent Nixon all over the globe. Love Esienhower historically, had more courage than our Senate and House of Representatives taken together as one. But he did like to stay at home and play golf.

McCain is eyeing the ladies on this one; those spurned by their fellow Dems who broke their hearts and went for the dude. Maybe this is smart, maybe those ladies who were for Hillary and opposed to Barack might see something here - someone has been listening to them. This could be a smart choice - I wonder how they'll look together.

About Palin:
The abrupt firing of Walt Monegan was a shock not only to him but all of the men and women of the Department of Public Safety. The way Monegan was fired raises serious questions about the governor's true motives.
So why was Walt Monegan fired out of the blue? Why would Governor Palin send a surrogate to fire her Public Safety Commissioner and then not have a decent explanation for the public? And why would Monegan's replacement be telling people three days before Monegan got fired, that he was going to become the new Commissioner of Public Safety?
Walt Monegan got fired for all of the wrong reasons. Walt Monegan got fired because he had the audacity to tell Governor Palin no, when apparently nobody is allowed to say no to Governor Palin.
Monegan said no, he couldn't cut his budget because his State Troopers were already being stretched to the limit and public safety suffering. He said no, he couldn't cut his budget because fuel costs for planes, boats and patrol vehicles soaring, while crime in rural Alaska was putting more demands on the Troopers transportation system.
But more alarming than any budget battle, Monegan said no to firing a State Trooper who had divorced Governor Palin's sister because the guy was being maliciously hounded by Palin's family.
And not just that; Monegan's firing came after his Colonel had to reprimand the governor's office for meddling in department personnel affairs.
Let's repeat that last bit again:
But more alarming than any budget battle, Monegan said no to firing a State Trooper who had divorced Governor Palin's sister because the guy was being maliciously hounded by Palin's family.

The way this came across MSNBC -- which might have gotten all the facts of two stories mixed up -- is that Palin had her ex-brother-in-law fired because he had beat up her sister. Andrea Mitchell actually said that because of the abuse, Palin might get a pass on this ethical lapse. WTF??? I'm sorry, but that shows a woman willing to abuse her power for a personal vendetta. After eight years of an administration that abused power for personal reasons and vendettas, we need this why??

I'm truly tickled!
I was somewhat concerned that they might pick Mittens, who would have been a formidable attack dog.
The selection of Palin will be seen a cynical attempt to woo disaffected Hillary supporters into the GOP fold.
Remember, the choice of a Number Two is someone that you would vouch for to be President in case the President is unable to carry out his or her duties. Ms. Palin, while a wonderful person, has two years of executive experience in a very sparsely populated state.
This raises questions of McCain's judgment as well as undermines his core attack against Obama of experience.
I couldn't be happier!

Americans are going to realize Gov. Palin could easily be President well before 2012.

Plus, there's only 1 VP debate, so not that big a deal. Bigger deal is the idea that Palin might be President, and we know NOTHING about her. I just read her Wikipedia entry, and she seems like a very interesting woman. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarah_Palin
But Vice-President? Really?

He might not be able to make her look stupid. She's very personable and a lot sharper than McCain. He can, however, blast her on the experience issue and force her to defend every incredibly stupid thing that the Bush-Cheney years have done to us. Especially on oil. I'll bet you dollars to donuts that the oil industry folks love her as a pick.

You're absolutely right -- but I think it's something The Obama Campaign will have ol' Joe primed and ready for. His attacks in the debate will, I presume, focus almost exclusively on McCain. And her utter lack of depth of knowledge/experience will shine through the tele screen without Biden saying a single negative thing about her, simply by dint of comparison to him.

Some thoughts:
*They think they can get angry Hillary voters who haven't already moved to McCain. I think they're wrong but it may be their only chance. This could be a desperation pick.
*That said, the base loves her - she's the Cornerite, NRLC, Club for Growth pick from heaven. It might seem like a "mavericky" pick, but how can it be "mavericky" if it's a base favorite?
*But the base already rallied around McCain, even though they don't like him. A pro-choice pick might have pushed some folks back to "staying home" but how much more base support can he get if he's already pulling in like 90+%?
*Nobody knows her and she's a half-term governor of Alaska...Alaska. Sorry, she's even more inexperienced than Obama...much more.
*Biden will eat her alive at the debate...but he'll have to be careful about not looking like he's beating up on the lady.
*I really can't see how they can keep up the "inexperience" attacks. McCain is 72 with a history of cancer. From a risk perspective, Palin would be closer to the Oval Office than just about any veep in recent history.
*This is the end of McCain's opposition to drilling in ANWR.
*She parochial, she has middle class appeal, she's got five kids, one in (or heading to) Iraq and one with Down's Syndrome. She's like the conservative version of Joe Biden, only much younger and much less experienced.
I don't see this helping them. I think they're overestimating their potential for winning over pro-choice, Dem/Dem leaning Hillary supporters.
But, whatever - this year we have 3 Senators, a 72-year old, two 40 somethings, a woman, and a black man all involved in the presidential race. Talk about diversity.

I don't think people are going to take kindly to Biden running up the score. Maybe have a restriction that Biden has to speak entirely in haikus, complete with season references?

See. While I understand the inexperience thing, I still think this is a bad pick for us.
The number of offensive jokes about Mccain sleeping with her already makes me worried about the same kind of "female s0olidarity" phenomenon we have seen in the primaries.
Stop it with the chauvinistic jokes

Yeah, there have been a number of them already this morning. Palin's got exploitable flaws, but it's going to be hard to exploit them when you're being (rightly) tagged as sexist.

Wow. I expected Lieberman or Romney, but this is even better. God forbid, should anything happen to him while President, this is the person who's next in line? It's not even about a talking point with me, it's about genuine fear. This scares the hell out of me. She has NO experience on a national stage, has never met a foreign leader, probably doesn't know the difference between Iraq and Iran, etc, etc, etc. What are they going to do, give her a crash course in 70 days?
I'm offended that someone whose running for President would honestly think that she would be acceptable for this country should she have to take his place. It's reprehensible.

This first thought that crossed my mind when hearing this pick is that McCain's top 2 or 3 choices all withdrew their names after last night.

Honestly McCain should it go with the Huck.
He will regret this.

I would not be surprised.
Anyone who wants a long term career in D.C. had better be smart enough to avoid the Repugs altogether until this election is over.
If I was a Repug looking to move into higher office I would run so far so fast if approached.

You know, that's a very good possibility. Being a losing veep candidate is pretty close to political death. My guess is that McCain really wanted Ridge or Lieberman but when they floated the trial balloon, the base came back with a resounding, "no way!" That left Pawlenty and Romney. As the week progressed and the Dem unified, both may have kindly said, "no thanks, John." Jindal had already taken himself out of the running. That left him with Palin and Portman. Desperate for women's votes, they went with Palin.
Based on what I've read about her, she strikes me as somebody who would appeal much more to NASCAR/NRA men than pro-choice women. In fact, if you are a pro-choice woman, you'd have to be completely bonkers or stupid if McCain's selection of Palin causes you to support that ticket.

Why does this remind me more of a Ferraro "just because she's a woman" pick than anything else?
Maybe he's trying to recreate the Mondale electoral success
August 29, 2008 11:01 AM | Reply | Permalink
This is a pick of pure political cynicism. Ny McCain's own standards, Gov. Palin's only qualification appears to be that she is a woman who will show that he is doing something independent, original and maverick. But women may well be insulted that he tries to appeal to them with a choice who clearly would not otherwise have been chosen. He hopes to get some buzz to counterbalance the effect of Obama's acceptance speech. The campaign apparently decided that with Obama's choice of Biden that the experience argument might not work anyway and that none of the other choices could stand up well in a debate with Biden. With this choice, the assumption is that Biden will not be able to attack easily in a debate. Of course, this is really mistaken because Biden's attacks will be on McCain and it is his superior knowledge and experience which will contrast with Palin. McCain is probably also assuming that the Obama campaign cannot easily attack without being viewed as sexist, but there is a secret weapon in the Obama campaign quiver to discuss the qualifications of this choice-HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON.

Reading that did make me think of a possible Obama ad. Just put together a clip of Palin's Miss America Q&A session. I'd be curious to hear her answer on how she would achieve world peace. You know that clip's gotta be out there somewhere.

So Palin shores up the Right wing base because she's pro-life, eats moose and has a lifetime membership to the NRA. This helps appeal to moderates and so called "Reagan Democrats" how?
August 29, 2008 11:03 AM | Reply | Permalink
It accomplishes two tasks:
(1) Panders to the PUMAs
(2) Gives the wingnutts a bedrock red-state conservative on the ticket
(3) Gives the misogynists in the Rethug party a pretty face to look at for 2 months.

great pick! maybe now some women will like him even though he doesn't believe in equal pay or women's rights.

Palin, who is under investigation herself, came to political prominence by blowing the whistle on other Republicans. A lot of mainstream Pugs hate her! And what about all the crap on EXPERIENCE? Ready to be Commander-n-Chief on day 1. Being Governor of Alaska doesn’t qualify you to be President of the PTA in most cities.

Another worry is much like the POW card, there is now the misogyny defense.
This isn't going to be a cake walk - Obama and Biden will have to watch how they attack now. Biden can't get all smarmy during the debates because he'll look like a bully.
This is to get the woman vote. Purely a political move - but it could pay off.
August 29, 2008 11:05 AM | Reply | Permalink
I call bulls*it on that. This will not pay off. Biden will attach McCain. She will never be able to play in his league.

between this pick and the constant use of young, attractive women in his attack ads, it seems to me that mccain thinks objectifying women is the way to go. also, her standing next to him is going to look like every creepy old guy with a young girlfriend you've ever seen.

Now McCain is not going to be able to argue a few things about Obama:
1. His lack of experience since Palin has even LESS experience.
2. She comes with a scandal already so all of Obama's supposed scandals ie Rezko can be counteracted by Palin's scandal.
3. This puts Roe vs Wade up in the forefront on whether we want to overturn this since the supreme court.
4. The question is this that if the PUMAs wanted to vote for McCain because they wanted to defeat Obama so that Hillary could run in 2012, do they just want a woman or do they want Hillary?
August 29, 2008 11:06 AM | Reply | Permalink
He's going to argue these things anyways, and no one in the media is going to call him out on it. Well, except maybe Olbermann and Matthews.

Being the mom of two kids has taken its toll on my brain. Gov. Palin has five kids (with one under a year old) and a burgeoning family/trooper scandal on her plate already. Wow, knock yourself out, GOP.
August 29, 2008 11:06 AM | Reply | Permalink
This is the one pick that scares me, simply because I am not sure how the Obama campaign will attack her. But I think, at the very least, it gives us a break because it takes the inexperience argument off the table. There's simply no way that he can argue that Obama is too experienced when he picked someone less experienced. And if there was any issue that was going to hold Obama back, it's that one. (Not that all Republicans are bigots, but they already had those who had a problem with Obama's race.) Like I said at Kevin Drum's blog, I'm worried, but not panicked.

And she's gonna debate Joe Biden? Oy.
I think the deal was just sealed. Obama will be the next President. Hallelujah!

This pick is directed at making a short-term impact to take away the spotlight on Obama. This pick seems all about making a splash today. I don't know that they've even thought about what is going to happen tomorrow when they realize they've got a 72 year-old candidate and their VP undercuts every argument they've made against Obama. Maybe they feel they've already lost the argument and are conceding that Obama does have the requisite experience.
Otherwise this can only be seen as a pick to shore up the base with an strong anti-abortion conservative who could potentially become president, while also potentially appealing to the few dozen PUMAs whose preference was based solely on identity politics. The irony is that Palin is undercut by all the same arguments the PUMAs used against Obama. No Sale, I expect.

From FOX NEWS: You can't get any further from Washington than Alaska, so she's the ultimate outsider.
Hello. Have you forgotten "exotic" Hawaii?

MSNBC is talking about Palin's "troopergate," how she fired someone for not firing her ex-brother-in-law. I can't believe they're saying this -- MSNBC is saying that her ex-brother-in-law beat her sister, and she was taking it personally, so she'll probably "get a pass" on this ethical lapse. Excuse me?? What this demonstrates is someone who is willing to abuse power for personal reasons, willing to abuse power to get revenge. This is truly scary. If Dems don't play this up, they're nuts.

I find it difficult to believe until I see her on stage with McCain. She must have some serious positives to counter the obvious Biden/Palin debate comparision, Obama's a celebrity so i choose an ex-beauty pagent winner, and she's ready to be president if I kick the bucket in office...

I know next to nothing about Sarah Palin, but I assume the majority of voters no even less.
I would expect that McCain will get little or no bounce from this pick.
The RNC is shaping up to be a mess. The juxtaposition to the DNC, the lack of talent, and of course Gustav all point to a bad convention. Maybe not much bounce there either.
Obama may have a 10 point lead once polls absorb the convention. He can hold it.
Do we dare say it? L... L... Land... Landsl...
