Big Union Drops Tough Social Security Mailer Hitting McCain's Wealth

In a move that signals a major new effort to woo elderly voters to Obama, the AFL-CIO is dropping a scorching new mailer in battleground states hammering John McCain on Social Security and directly referencing McCain's wealth, his corporate jet, and his expensive Italian shoes.

"McCain's worth over $100 million," reads the mailer, which we obtained in advance of its public release. "He owns 10 houses...he flies around on a $12.6 million corporate jet...he walks around in $520 Italian loafers."

"If John McCain lost his social security, he'd get by just fine," the mailer continues. "Would you?" Click on the images below to enlarge:

The new mailer, which highlights McCain's history of support for privatizing Social Security, signals a recognition that unions can play a role reaching out to what they think will be a pivotal swing state vote: Retired union members.

Steve Smith, a spokesperson for the AFL-CIO, tells me that the union will be striving to reach out to more than a million union retirees in coming weeks.

"In key battleground states, the retiree vote is going to be crucial in the presidential race," Smith says. "Our research -- polling, focus groups -- indicates that many seniors still are unaware of John McCain's record in support of privatization and plans to drastically reduce benefits."

The mailer will go out tomorrow to 50,000 retirees in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan, and more mailings will soon be dropped in those states, where the union is also planning a series of Social Security events.

The mailing's hard-hitting references to McCain's wealth also suggests that the big unions see another role for themselves: Striking a sharp populist tone in attacks against McCain that others have been calling on the Obama camp to employ, particularly in response to McCain's "celeb" ads. The message, quite simply, is: Who's the real elitist here?

Bravo!

It's about time.

The AFL-CIO is doing a GREAT job this summer, much better than the so-called surrogates in the Democratic Party are.

This one is going to leave a mark!

user-pic

agreed with all of you, it's long overdue and great stuff

Greg,
As some have also pointed out below, I, too, was confused by your verbiage.
Seeing that the union "dropped" the mailer appears to say they were going to use it, but now have "dropped" plans to do so.
Maybe "distributes" would be a better term.
I can envision that you wanted to avoid "mailing a mailer," but drop is not even an accurate description of its distribution since it's being mailed and not "dropped" door-to-door.

user-pic

Yeah, WTF? Drops a mailer? This may be insider speak, I don't know but it conveys an entirely different meaning to those of us not in the loop. Until I read the line, "the mailer will go out..." I thought that they had "dropped" (Meaning canceled) plans to send it out.

I'm in the direct mail business.
DROP merely means, to DROP THE MAILINGS AT THE POST OFFICE. WHEN YOU MAIL LOTS OF PIECES THAT ARE SORTED AND PRE-SORTED, THE POST OFFICE CALLS IT A DROP.

user-pic

Well, I'm just not in with the cool kids, so I didn't know that "drop" means "mail". I guess I learned something new today.

But TPM's editorial authority has to decide whether a word like this will actually make sense to most of its readers. I contend it does not. Most of us are not in the direct mail business.

Slang and jargon have their place. But a headline might not be it.

At least I wasn't the only one temporarily confused by this.

-- ARG

'Drop' is pretty common slang for "release" in more than just direct mail culture -- authors and musicians use it as well. When did your record drop? Or has asking a blogger whether a post has "dropped yet"? Just as an FYI thing here. I'm sure you'll hear it all over the place now. (That's how it is when I learn something new, suddenly... everyone is saying it.)

user-pic

Yeah, as I said, at least I learned something new today. (Or yesterday.)

Just for grins, I went to dictionary.com, and of the 74 definitions listed for "drop", none of them matches this exact usage. (Under "noun" definitions, it includes reference to a post office, and references to a secret location, as in a place to drop off a bag full of drug money. But no listings of this type under the many "verb" definitions.)

Of course, I can easily see how this word could be used in this way. And I'm sure I'll see it more often now, as you suggest.

But my point is to question whether a news organization -- and I want to stress that I view TPM as a major news outlet; this is my primary source for news -- should be using the cool lingo, or trying to communicate clearly.

Or, like, maybe the headline could be "Labor Dudes Drop SICK Mailer Totally Shredding McCain".

-- ARG

Hey, this is a great piece! Can we contribute to get it distributed in more places?

user-pic

I went to aflcio.org, but did not easily find a way to just contribute money. Downthread, speakesa flagged an affilitated orgainzation called Working America (www.workingamerica.org), that does offer a straightforward way to contribute.

It appears to me, however, that this flyer comes directly from the AFL-CIO, rather than from Working America. (In other words, I don't know whether contributing money to Working America would widen the distribution of this flyer -- though they are clearly doing good work in this campaign.)

-- ARG

I'm fairly certain that you can't just donate to a union. You can join, but that's about it. Working America has been specifically created to allow non-union members from participating in their organization. Working America is also a full subsidiary of the AFL-CIO.

Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan....why not Florida?
or are they planning on sending the flyer there later?

that state is full of retirees; my mom can't get by without social security

Yes, Florida would be a great place to send these flyers!

user-pic

Also the Sun Belt. Tucson's like 50% over 50 (or so it seemed when I lived there)

I lived in Tucson too. You are right, and Phoenix greater areas should be hit hard also.

Arizona too. Lots of snow birds there.

Bravo. It's about time.

Will the cowardly gelded assclowns in the MSM like Jake Tapper or Wolf Blitzer pick up on the $520 Italian loafers like they did Edwards' $400 haircut? I won't hold my breath.

Don't count on it... Jake and Wolf probably wear them too- I doubt they think its unusual or newsworthy.

AFL-CIO, you're doing a excellent job.

Finally!

My roots are working class and I've favored this kind of campaigning since Gore versus Bush.

Yes, it is "class-based" campaigning, but does anyone have any doubt that that's what this election is all about, anyway?

Hit the Republicans hard with this, because these are the issues that are going to win the White House AND Capitol Hill for the Democrats.

SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSmack! Nice work.

Me likey! Me likey lots!

Sorry to hijack, but has anyone read Joe Klein's bitch slap of McGoo this morning? Holy cow:

http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2008/08/scholarship.html

Klein has had some sort of epiphany it appears. Go read it for yourself.

user-pic

I think I speak for a nation of millions when I say...IT'S ON BITCHES!

user-pic

Hey, Greg.

Probably it's just me, but I got confused reading this article because of the headline. I read the headline, "Big Union Drops Tough Mailer...", to imply that they were NOT going to mail this one, and instead maybe replace it with something else. I had to read through the article twice before I realized that in fact this one IS the mailer going out.

Like I said, it's probably just me.

Of course, I also LOVE this piece. I'd like to see this get to every household in the country, and I'd like to see it get the attention of the cable chat shows. They NEVER talk about McCain's wealth, let alone his plans to gut Social Security.

user-pic

Arg,

I thought "dropped" meant pulled back too.

ole dopey us. :)

Yep, "drop" means "discontinue" or "cancel."

I have mentioned this error before, but it seems to persist.

user-pic

OMFG! Another DEM leaning organization doing the correct thing . . . This is, like, twice in ONE week. If they are not careful, the DEMs might not be able to snatch defeat out the the jaws of certain victory!

From Andrew Sullivan's "Take Back the Campaign" contest.

This is great.

That is an amazing ad. It scared the shit out of me, and I've heard all those arguments before. Thanks for posting hyperRevue!

Goes to show there is far more creativity out there then what comes out of the usual political consultants shops. Anyone independent group could run that ad today as is.

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! This pretty much sum up the whole argument against McCain and debunk the elitist nonsense from right wingers.

oh, you can bet woof drops a nice chunk to keep that beard so neatly trimmed....

lol

Good move, AAARP next?

Hit the scum sacks with a little of their own tactics.

user-pic
AARP next?

Not a chance.  The AARP gets a huge amount of their income from selling insurance.

They supported Dubya's Medicare prescription-benefits sleight-of-hand, despite its hugely negative impact on their members.  Perplexing until you look under the hood.

Look for them to behave according to their interests as a big insurance company.

Pretty good. However, it still will not matter until Obama makes this election about McCain. Like it or not, McCain comes across as qualified to be president. His much hyped war record and the "high road" compliments that he has received from other Democrats gets him just past the bar. McCain has followed the classic Republican tactic of smear. There is very little about the actual policies and then McCain just lies out of his a**. When will the Democrats catch on. The union certainly has.

Look, I want to see a higher tone in this election just like everyone else. But negative ads work. They have worked in the last two presidential election. Being nice is all good. However, you have to fight back against the media bias and negative advertising. There are legitimate issues as to veterans' issues, lobbyists, credibility and even intellect that need to be raised. Yes, they are negative but this election is about who is better fit to lead. You have to highlight the factors that militate against electing one just as much as the positives for our position.

user-pic

It's not just you.

Oh come on, Obama: The AFL-CIO is tantmount to a 527. Aren't you gonna call them off? Ya wouldn't want them to be too effective, now would you?

user-pic

LOL

It ought to be put up on billboards. Does ClearChannel (they own a shitton of billboards) cater to Republicans or to any buck that comes it's way?

user-pic

Weird. That was supposed to be a reply to Richard L. Adlof

user-pic

That was supposed to be a reply to ARG, above, who found use of the word "drop" confusing. So did I. I saw the headline and immediately thought, "That sounds like a great idea, so why the AFL-CIO drop it?"

user-pic

Oh, you have to check the box for the reply function. Maybe I'm too stupid to comment.

user-pic

I thought the same thing.

user-pic

Now this is the kind of ad I want to see!!

This summer I've been knocking on doors in southwest Ohio for an affiliate of the AFL-CIO called Working America. We knock on non-union doors getting our message out. The issues we talk about are: good jobs, fair pay, education, health care and secure retirement. We've been registering people to vote and to vote by mail. If we can get working class folks to vote on these issues we will win Ohio! Last week I was in Wilmington (a traditionally conservative town) and talked to some shell shocked people. As you might know they are a town of 10,000 and they will lose 6,000 jobs in the DHL deal.

I noticed someone asked if they could contribute and yes you can. Our web site is: http://www.workingamerica.org/

That mailer is a beautiful thing. More like this, please.

Just remember, kids, how this really works:

R's drop a swiftboat smear, a lie... [crickets].

Dems drop a devastating expose of McCain's real track record, positions, life... it's a "smear".

It's all in the framing, and the MSM has determined that you can't win. And IOKIYOR. And all that rot.

user-pic

My god, I'd given up hope that somebody on our side would have the balls and initiative to make this simple, elemental argument. The fact that the geniuses at the Obama campaign and/or the DNC didn't have this out within a week after Obama clinched is an indication of how incompetent these two groups are at retail politics, but the important thing is that it was done. Kudos to organized labor.

Doing this stuff is not hard, folks, and it's a target-rich environment out there. Maybe Obama should just fire Axelrod or whoever the dope is that's managing his communications and hire the AFL-CIO in his place.

And yes, the headline is completely misleading and should be changed.

Take a deep breath...

user-pic

Yeah, I think Obama is just keeping his powder dry. Face it, most people aren't paying any attention right now. They're watching the Olympics, or going on vacation, or sending their kids off to college. The real contest is won or lost in October.

So I wouldn't sell Obama short just yet.

But yes, it helps a great deal to get some of this stuff out there now (especially by supporting organizations like the AFL-CIO). You've got to plant the seed, then come back and water it later.

-- ARG

AFL-CIO leaders, how well are YOU guys doing with all that money you forcibly take from your members?

user-pic

Bugmenot asks:

AFL-CIO leaders, how well are YOU guys doing with all that money you forcibly take from your members?

That's it? That's your comment?

user-pic

Bugmenot asks:

AFL-CIO leaders, how well are YOU guys doing with all that money you forcibly take from your members?

That's all you have to say?

user-pic

The AFL-CIO takes not a dime of mandatory dues from any individual American citizen. You spread a lie. The AFL-CIO, contrary to what Greg writes in his post, is not a labor union, but rather is an umbrella organization of autonomous national and international labor unions. Those unions, in some cases, have negotiated lawful union security provisions, and generally at the local level upon ratification by the membership. But anti-union folks like you can never be required under federal law to pay union dues. You may be required to pay "core" fees to cover the costs that a union expends in representing every person in the bargaining unit, members and non-members, even people who hate unions like you (in the event, for example, that you are unfairly fired by a miserable boss). Of course, in your world that probably never happens.

user-pic

Excellent! It's about time!

It's about freaking time! Our side has wasted enough time not engaging them on the bulls*** Mccain has been spewing. How can he call Barack Obama an elitist with a straight face? Only an ugly smug never-been-off the government teat Republican would have the grapes to even attempt this line of attack. It is so profoundly insulting to our collective intelligence that it takes my breath away.

This won't sound too polite, but if you really listen to McCain and pay close attention to the way he is running this campaign, a very simple explanation will surface. I know this isn't really any longer in vogue in our PC society, but the reason for McCain's behavior is that he is an asshole. Just because he's gotten to where he is does not protect him from this basic flaw in his character. There's no need for charity here, Christian or otherwise. The plain truth will suffice.

user-pic

Sounds like an effective mailer by the AFL-CIO. I have to say however, TPM page editors, that the verb "drops" in the headline makes it appear that the group sent out such a mailer, then retracted it. I was convinced of this actually, until I read the article.

Now THAT's how you hit McCain for his lifestyle. Whoever put this one together should get a raise. It links McCain's wealth, his policies and his age together to form a devastating portrait of the old coot. Bravo, big union.

user-pic

As usual, the GOPers will call it class warfare.

Politics

Definition: The art of class warfare in a democracy.

Whenever I hear somebody say "we don't want to start playing class warfare", I respond hell yes we do! It is then fairly easy to tear apart their stupid statement. Usually people that utter the class warfare statement haven't thought about it.

Hey, some Dems are acting and talking like real Dems again! Not at all like Danziger's passive donkeys in a bar wondering what conservatives are thinking so they can do the same.
Yo, this is F-R-E-S-H.

Drop is a common word in regard to sending out mailers. The direct mail department at the non-profit where I work has always used the term "drop" in regard to when a particular month's pieces went out.

Mailers dropped on Monday. Etc.

Bravo. Its about time. I wish Obama and his campaign had the balls to run this ad. This is a perfect spot for TV

The reason the AFL can't solicit money directly is that it's illegal for unions to ask non-union members to give to their PACs (gotta love union-busting labor laws). Working America is the community affiliate of the AFL-CIO, so you can become a member of Working America and support all the amazing political work they're doing to reach out to working class voters on pocketbook issues. They run one of the most effective canvass and mail operations in politics, and I would highly advocate giving to them.

It about time somebody brought McShames 'exotic life style.'

Beautifully designed!

user-pic

While perhaps it is not familiar to you, "dropped" is the exact right word. "Drop" is an extremely common usage for describing mailings, especially large bulk ones. Google "mail" and "drop" -- or any variation thereof -- if you don't believe me. I would argue that thinking of it as "cancelling" a mailing would definitely be the more obscure use of the word "drop" in this context.

user-pic

That was supposed to be a reply to a comment above. Oh, well.

Love the ad Josh was lovin' and this too is great !!!

Thanks AFL-CIO

Point of order: My simple brain was confused by the repeated use of the word "dropping" the mailer. To me that sounded like they had plans to send it, but then dropped those plans.

Hey, I'm simple.

Otherwise, good for them. The message about McCain's wealth is totally fair game. The GOP has somehow made this issue off limits for far too long.

Love, love, LOVE this ad. Brilliant work AFL-CIO!

user-pic

Game on! Ironic isn't?... that the GOP attack lines against Obama actually ring louder and truer against their own candidate.

Here's one they should use:

John McCain wants you to have his government funded Healthcare benefits, but can you afford it under his plan with the additional profits provided for the pharmaceutical companies? People's good health should not be compensated for corporate profits!

I'm in the direct mail business.
DROP merely means, to DROP THE MAILINGS AT THE POST OFFICE. WHEN YOU MAIL LOTS OF PIECES THAT ARE SORTED AND PRE-SORTED, THE POST OFFICE CALLS IT A DROP.

We need for all the working people's organizations to stand up and be counted! SHOW UP McCain's hypocrisy, he is a lying old fool with a Hitler complex. He is UNDOUBTEDLY complicit in this Russian/Georgian upheaval - and TGDSOBGWB KNEW about it in advance. Anyone seeing his smirk as he was interviewed in China about it could see he was ENJOYING having a secret. Gawd, the unplumbed slimy depths of TGDSOBGWB's feeble mind, his proud anti-intellectualism ("anybody who knows more than me is obviously an elitist pinko commie pedophile and probably gay as well") - how did we get to be a nation of morons? Why do the Rethugs GLORIFY ignorance and perversion? Why have they dedicated themselves to being the party of the LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR? Why are they so virulently anti-humanist, taking money from hungry children and wounded soldiers to give to their corporate masters?? And what are we going to do to reverse this onslaught against the educated citizenry of our Beloved Country? DEMAND accountability, from everyone! R or D, I want to see REAL processes in place that will advance our rhetoric instead of stifling it in the name of the Lowest Common Denominators. Stand up and stand together, our very lives are at stake! Another term of this kind of blind pig-ignorant incompetence and it will be too late!

>>>where are we going, and why are we in this handbasket?

It's time to TAKE BACK AMERICA
