Yet Another Republican Has Pushed China-Cuba Oil Myth

This one slipped our attention at first, but it turns there was yet another Republican who continued to push the China-Cuba Oil Myth even after Dick Cheney retracted it: Rep. Mike Rogers of Alabama.

By our count, this makes 12 Republicans who have continued to push the story.

In a guest op-ed for the Opelika-Auburn News published on June 16, Rogers wrote:

In December 2006 Congress passed, with my support, a bill that partially expanded drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. But there is still a large area that is off limits to U.S. companies.

Since then, you may have seen China has signed an agreement with Cuba to drill for this oil. That's right: China has set up shop off the coast of Florida and is using oil our country could readily use instead.

Rogers' Congressional office has not responded to our requests for comment.

It's time to do a poll of Faux News viewers: How do you feel about China drilling our oil off the coast of Cuba while Congressional Democrats keep blocking our God-given right to fill up our Hummers at $2 a gallon?

Isn't that how it goes? Remember the numbers on how many Faux News viewers who to this day believe there were WMDs in Iraq?

it's good you guys are keeping track of this, but really how surprising is it?

"Republicans intentionally (or unintentionally but shockingly ignorantly) mislead public" is not exactly news anymore.

What surprises me here is that previous iterations of this have been voiced by pols from constituencies hundreds of miles from the alleged scene. Alabama's the closest, I expect.

Fantastic! This is my Congressman. It will be such a pleasure voting against Do-nothing Rogers this November.

By the way, this race (for AL-03) was recently updated by CQ from Solid Republican to Likely Republican. Rogers opponent, Josh Segall, is generating a lot of buzz and has raised a substantial amount of money.

Rachel Maddow (sp?) spoke about the vast number of Republicans repeating this lie on her show yesterday. She played a clip of Mel Martinez (R-FL) on the Senate floor calling this a straight-up lie. What's funny is she would play other Republicans repeating the lie, then follow each one with the Martinez line. Pretty funny, but then again, pretty sad.
OTOH, Breaking News! Obama isn't consistent on Iraq because McCain said so! Let's cover that instead!
Idiots...

To quote a poster on another site, Republicans prefer to live in a fact-free environment.

Newt Gingrich is pushing this tale too, in his recorded message trying to get people to donate to his "American Solutions Petition" - offshore drilling now. They are calling small business owners soliciting donations. Out of curiosity I accepted their offer to listen to a recorded message from Newt which includes the China drilling fiction. This happened last week.

Not Chinese drillers; Cheney’s drillers.
(Not Chinese hackers; Cheney’s hackers.)

I just pray to Jahweh ,and all other gods , that Prime Minister Cheney does not decide to take the last one hundred or so days of his rouge regeime to bomb Iran. What is very scary is that recently Cheneybush signed a fINDING -and got a $400 million black budget that will be used to destabilize Iranian government ...

we are big Josh Segall fans over at the The Progressive Electorate. we are cover this story on Rogers also. turns out he ran this again on June 18. he has yet to retract this also
