Rudy Pops Up, Recites China-Cuba Oil Myth

Oh man. We now have another Republican voicing the silly myth that China is drilling for oil off of American shores -- and not just any Republican, but Rudy Giuliani himself!

As noted by Think Progress, Rudy appeared last night on Glenn Beck's TV show and made the claim.

"You look at Cuba," Rudy said. "Cuba is going to allow China to drill for oil within 80 miles of Florida. And Florida had a 300-mile limit. So in essence, we have China drilling for American oil."

Um, no. China's agreements with Cuba extend only to shoreline areas. Some exploration contracts for deep sea areas have been sold to firms from other countries, but no active drilling is happening as of yet.

Maybe Rudy hasn't heard that the GOP's heavy-hitters have already retired this line -- Dick Cheney himself retracted it three weeks ago, though a few GOP stragglers here and there continue to repeat it.

Someone needs to call them on this insanity. Specifically Obama.

Paging Joe Biden...

This is from the guy who is more qualified than McFuddle for the job of President. What a freakin mess the GOP is in these days!

avatar

Rudy make up crap when it suits him. Tell us something new.

However, it is amazing how long the Dem leadership is letting this inanity go without serious challenge. The Repugs will keep ringing this bell until they are called out on it.

There are days that I wish we could have run against him. Like every day, for instance.

Losing that comb over is obviously allowing brain cells to escape from his head!

What? China drilling off the coast of Florida is not related to 9/11?

Here's the facts:

Then who is drilling off the coast of Florida?

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/blogs/markg8/

"The United States Geological Survey estimates that the energy field on
Cuba's side alone may have 4.6 billion barrels of oil and 9.8 trillion
cubic feet of natural gas. That much energy is equivalent to just a few
months of the United States' total energy consumption."

Jesus how far off can you be? 4.6 billion barrels of oil is equivalent to a few months of our energy needs? According to the US Energy Information Agency we used 20,687,000 barrels/day in 2007. 4.6 billion barrels of oil would amount to about 6 years of our needs. Either the Time's Michael Janofsky or the USGS doesn't know how to add.

That's from your blog post, you dope. Janofsky and USGS probably can add, and more to the point, multiply as well. 20,687,000 X 365 (the number of days in a year, remember) = 7,550,755,000. That's just under 7.6 trillion barrels of oil for one year. 4.6 trillion would cover about seven and a half months. Go home and wipe the egg off your face.

Yikes. 7.6 billion barrels per year, not trillion. The rest stands.

A big Brazilian oil company spent $17 million in 2001 looking for oil in Cuban waters. A big Spanish oil company drilled a mile down 18 miles off the coast of Cuba in 2004. They didn't find anything worthwhile. USA Today in 2007 and the NY Times in 2006 had articles predicting China would be looking for oil this year in Cuban waters this year. It hasn't happened probably because deep seas rigs are expensive and hard to come by.

Fact is there's lots better places to look for oil than Cuba or off the FL coast. The Chinese aren't that dumb but Republicans are.

I guess I'm thick. Why are the repubs putting that story out? Are they just trying to gain support for US off shore drilling?

TPM, you can do better with your headline-writing. The China-Cuba drilling story is a lie. Not myth, not "conspiracy," but a lie. Please, call a spade a spade.

Are they just trying to gain support for US off shore drilling? Yes.

Obviously Glen Schreck agrees with that lie also. Why is that idiot on CNN?? He demeans their brand with his nonesense. Doesn't Rudy understand that the people in Florida don't want offshore drilling?? Perhaps he didn't spend enough time down there to know that. I hope that Johnny picks Crist as VP. Now that Crist has jumped on the let's drill everywhere bandwagon, they might just lose Florida.

Are there 9 or 11?

From the pic, it appears that Rudi is trying to pop a cap in someone's a$$ using a finger gun.

Interesting point. Other than being kept informed here, I haven't heard or seen reported any of these claims by the Rs of Chinese drilling for oil off of Cuba

avatar

where to begin?

first, don't the Chinese already own most of our debt? we're shocked that they would deal with someone else?

second, if we had a sane policy about trade with Cuba, we might have oil contracts there. but NOOOOOOO, we're signing contracts in Iraq...which we all know will make us far more energy secure and strategically secure? and we won't give the Cubans wristwatches, much less oil production technology

and please, who is listening to this guy anyway? why would McBush put a guy out front that no one would vote for? in his own party?

Where are the satilite pictures? America has not trusted Cuba since 1962...nothing happens in Cuba that this government does not have documentation for.

The average American brainiac couldn't identify the Strait of Hormuz if a sheikh wrapped him in oilcloth and dunked him right in the middle of it. The Cuba-China oil connection brings the enemy's nefarious activities right up to our precious shores. This talking point has emotional firepower, regardless of the lack of truth in it.

Calling a spade a spade. Florida's offshore oil exploration has been reduced by the Republicans with the "Florida Compromise" at a cost to the American taxpayer of $235 million.

That is not a typo. Actual tracts leased by oil companies were actually bought back. See here.

Yeah Rudy is the genius amongst idiots,....so Cuba is roughly 100 miles away from Florida and American oil rights are around 200+ miles,....so really we should be able to drill right in downtown Havana under his theories of genius. These type of Republicans are what's wrong with American standing in the world,....all they cry out is "it's mine,mine,mine,mine.....me,me,me,me,me,me". This is rich when he says "it would much better if american companies would do the drilling". If only these assholes would say that about most manufacturing jobs that are sent to China.

Other than being kept informed here, I haven't heard or seen reported any of these claims by the Rs of Chinese drilling for oil off of Cuba

You won't because it's not for your consumption, it's for those who pass on rumors that Obama is a muslim, etc. It's all under the radar so it doesn't get factchecked and debunked in the media.

avatar

Repeating myths? That's the GOP's whole plan. They did it to get us into Iraq, they're doing it to get us into Iran, they're doing it to discredit Obama, and they'll keep doing it until they're driven from power.

how many cuba/china oil stories can you write about in a week?

i mean its not like there's a war, or a depression, or an environmentla crises on a global scale we need to worry about...

its nice to see TPM sticking to the hardhitting important issues that really matter.

Yeah like the price of gas won't have any affect on the election freaktown. This is an important issue and Repubs are trying to dishonestly use it to bludgeon Dems. You may think it's more productive to ignore it but we'd be fools to let them get away with it.

Absolutely. This is no gaffe. It's an orchestrated Big Lie campaign to bulldoze the cowardly Democratic Congress into authorizing coastal and ANWR drilling before Election Day. I wish I could say that I think it will fail. But not after FISA and the other recent Dem capitulations.

You may check here for extents of Exclusive Economic Zones in the Straits of Florida:

http://walrus.wr.usgs.gov/infobank/gazette/html/regions/flez.html

A couple of other points:

1. Deep-ocean drilling rigs don't work well in even moderate current flows, and the Straits of Florida has one of the world's swiftest, the Gulf Stream. How to even hold station with a rig in that region would be a difficult task. I have seen the Gulf Stream flow within a few miles of the northern coast of Cuba, so even in the Cuban EEZ drilling could be risky.

2. Drilling just offshore in that area will be possible. There the near-shore current flow is generally east to west, around the western end of Cuba, thence eastward along the southern Cuban coastline -- dispersing right into the most productive Cuban lobster beds. The Cubans know this, and I'd be surprised if the risk of destroying such a fertile fishing region is not of great concern to them.

Hold on, Rudy said "You look at Cuba, Cuba is going to allow China to drill for oil within 80 miles of Florida. And Florida had a 300-mile limit. So in essence, we have China drilling for American oil." Cuba is 90 miles from Florida. You say "Um, no. China's agreements with Cuba extend only to shoreline areas." How far from Cuba's shorline do you consider "shoreline area?"

The headline for this story is "Norm Coleman: China Drilling Off U.S." Shores. This is the story about Rudy Giuliani. Make the correction please.

Someone started celebrating the 4th a little early...

I noticed that as well but don't bother with the correction, he won't be far behind spouting this crap.

I received a forwarded email (from a right-wing acquaintance) that was written by Bill Phillips (you know, Phillips Petroleum). It was a long email that claimed that US oil companies are not making any windfall profits because they have to buy most of their crude oil from foreigners who charge a lot! In the course of this email, Bill Phillips retails the idea that China is drilling off the coast of Cuba. As my acquaintance said, when Bill Phillips talks, people listen. I pointed out that this lie had already been refuted, and disavowed by Cheney, but my acquaintance said that if Bill Phillips said it, it must be true.

Those of you who never get any emails about Obama as a muslim, China drilling off Cuba, and other right-wing circulating lies, ought to beg your right wing acquaintances to forward you information. Otherwise you will be blindsided. I always "Reply all" when I have some piece of counterinfo to share with these folks. Who knows? Someone might take note. Of course, you have to have a strong stomach and a sense of humor, otherwise you can end up just helplessly fuming.
