Poll: GOP Sen. Ted Stevens Down By Eight In Re-Election Bid

A new Rasmussen poll of Alaska has some big news: Democratic candidate for Senate Mark Begich now leads long-time incumbent Republican Ted Stevens by a margin of 52%-44%, in a deep-red state that hasn't sent a Dem to Congress since 1974.

Stevens has been easily re-elected since he was first appointed to his seat in the late 1960s, but his many ethics scandals have slowly but surely dragged his popularity down. He now has only a 50% approval rating to a nearly-identical 48% unfavorable rating, compared to Begich's 63%-34% favorables.

In short, Republicans could be on track to lose this seat unless something drastic happens.

Calling the DSCC, please send check for $5 million please care of Mark Begich, AK.

Couldn't happen to a bigger ass.

True. Stevens revels in his bad reputation. I think that not only will the corruption allegations bring Stevens down but also the fact that he is 84 years old. This is a change election and Steven is most definitely the past.

My favorite bit, via NPR:

Senator Stevens, you once described yourself as a "mean, miserable SOB." What makes you miserable?

We knew you were a mean SOB, but we figured you were happy about it!

Was this poll conducted by telephone or by a series of tubes?

NO!

So the combined mockery of the intertubes might bring down another GOP hack? Sweet!

It's NOT a truck...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Republicans? The voters just aren't that into you this year.

F yes. Just, yeah. (How does TS have even close to a 50% approval?)

Incumbent.

Bridge to nowhere is an example.

TS has bought much of his support. Alaska is extremely dependent on money from the lower 48 provided by the federal government, and TS is a key gatekeeper. A lot of the rest comes from the general Republican bent of the Alaska electorate.

down the tubes, you might say

Well that poll is good news indeed. One less complete corrupt idiot running our government is always good news.

I can hardly believe that there is a serious chance Uncle Ted won't die on the Senate floor after slipping on his own drool. I was sure that was going to be how he'd go. I like this way much better. The land of the midnight sun gets a better, though less entertaining, deal out it then.

Guess who will be taking a trip across a bridge to nowhere?

Polls of Alaskans can't be accurate. There are massive differences in constituencies between rural/remote areas and urban ones.

Uncle Ted delivers jobs to Alaskans, (usually via DOD spending), consistently votes pro-union and pro-oil development (issues that go hand-in-hand in Alaska).

Regarding Begich: Anchorage mayors are notoriously mediocre.
