Poll: Despite Obama Trip, McCain Still Holds Edge On Foreign Policy
A new CNN poll just released today has the first numbers taken entirely since Obama's overseas trip on key national-security readiness questions -- and the survey finds that McCain still holds an advantage in these areas.
CNN's article on the poll says that McCain polled better than Obama on all the foreign policy and national security questions: Who's trusted more to handle terrorism, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Middle East, and Iran. No internals are available yet, so we can't be sure that Obama didn't cut into McCain's lead on these questions -- but the McCain sweep seems pretty telling.
On the other hand, the poll also suggests that McCain's days-long effort to paint Obama as unpatriotic and indifferent to the troops has flopped. Two thirds of respondents said the trip was appropriate for a presidential candidate, and 72% say Obama cares about veterans and the troops in Iraq.
And Obama is ahead in the horse race: Obama 51%, McCain 44%, beyond the ±3% margin of error. So even if McCain is viewed as superior on foreign policy issues, it's not enough -- and Obama is getting a passing grade.

The debates will hurt McCain

It's the McCain Brand, and it will not diminish until Obama starts attacking it or people start paying attention (and neither are likely to happen). It's too bad Obama isn't a better debater, because that might have been his only shot at making real inroads against McCain on this issue.
I still say you bring Biden on your ticket and McCain loses his only edge. However I think Obama's campaign is too message disciplined for Biden. Biden would have went off today if McCain came at him like he came at Sen. Obama.

One of the mysteries of America is the willingness -- even eagerness -- of consumers to believe in the "brand", even past the point where it has become synonymous with shit.
Doubly so in politics, I guess, where the connection between the "consumers" and the "product" is a complete abstraction most of the time.

If I had to guess, I would attribute these foreign policy poll results to the media drumbeat that reinforces these memes that Dems are inherently 'weak' on defense issues. Then again, the Dems seem often willing to fall into those traps on their own, so they don't often help themselves as often as they could.
Still, the media is playing a big part in how the electorate perceives the party's relative strengths - it certainly has nothing to do with any objective measure. The past 20 years should make that abundantly clear.

Given how Gallup pureed the polling data to come up with the "McCain leads by 4", I'd be seriously interested in the internals on this poll, because I really don't trust CNN on this.
In the release, they only mention that Obama has a double-digit lead over McCain on multiple issues, but not how much McCAin is leading Obama.

Not really pureed, just looked at likely voters...people who voted in the last election...how sure are you that you'll vote in this election?...That sort of thing. There're a lot of registered voters who never vote.

Well, the media is certainly on the McCain bandwagon. Any of you wanting to slap Dana Milbank (which I hope KO does on his show) for his misquoting Obama and making national headlines read that Obama is pompous, here is asshole Dana's email. And yes, just for clarification, Dana is a guy.

They aren't polling foreign policy, they're polling war policy. Who do you think is the best warrior in countries A-Z?
If you love war, vote for McCain. If you want peace, when the alarm goes off on election day, pull the covers over your head, go back to sleep and dream.
Hint for perpetually clueless Dems, explain to the folks that all that money Gore was going to put in the "lock box" for your social security has been spent and continues to be spent on war.
As long as the Dems cannot present alternatives or explain choices they are going to be beat by the guys with the biggest gun.
Well, at least we get the government we deserve.

Oh, and as reported, the D.C. office top guy for the AP was offered a job by McCain, which he gave consideration to before finally declining. Today, the AP justifies McCain's gaffes (dementia) with this pronouncement below. So now when McCain screws up his facts it is because he is breezy. WTF?!
PER THE AP:
Some of McCain's remarks seem to stem from his generally breezy nature and occasional tendency to leave details to subordinates. A case in point is the pending referendum in Arizona, which would bar affirmative action efforts in state agencies' hiring, contracting and college admissions.

The point was never to win on foreign policy. The (false) narrative of McCain's competence in that area and Republicans in general was never going to go away overnight. The point was to establish a certain threshold of acceptability for Obama on the issue.
Obviously I don't know what the poll question was but I bet if they asked something like "Is Barack Obama qualified to lead on foreign policy?" he would score better this week than a couple of weeks ago.

What can we Obama supporters do? It's perfectly obvious now that the media is going to push the pro-McCain talking points at every available opportunity directly or in disguised form: Who does that UPPITY NIGGER think he is (Don't forget why Emmett Till was lynched); "What's Obama's problem. Why can't he close the deal, etc.") We're fighting a losing battle if we think we can change a state of affairs that simply isn't going to change.
What we can do is register voters focusing on the young and African-Americans and others but with major emphasis on these two crucial voting blocks. North Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Virginia ARE IN PLAY! Let's forget the pundits and put our efforts where they will really pay off.

Folks, let's keep some perspective here. Obama is never going to overtake McCain on war issues, and he doesn't have to. No Democrat would. Obama just has to seem plausible in foreign policy generally -- and the trip really laid a good basis for that -- and he needs to keep the focus relentlessly on the economy, which is the primary voter concern.

here's an idea:
why doesn't obama put together a highlight reel of all of john mccain's foreign policy gaffes of the last week and put it in an ad and saturate the airwaves with it?
i honestly think its all about john mccain's bio and reputation and has nothing to do with the voters being informed.
all the voters hear from the tv's talking heads is "mccain's a foreign policy expert" so they believe it.

The Tour was never intended nor expected to give Obama an edge on foreign policy. That may come, but the whole point was to prepare the ground, to show voters that the man could indeed represent this country to the world.

What?!?! Obama was out of the country for a week and didn't magically overcome McCain in every single category mentioned in a poll? Sounds like he's losing!!!11!1!
Yes, that's the MSM spin on it, I'm sure. But I look at the 51-44 number and think, I'd rather have my candidate with the 51 than the 44, thank you very much. And how about that, he actually does.

I think we all need to take a deep breath, and keep registering voters and working the phones. This is like watching football and your team is way up but because you are so used to losing, you think the other team can pull it off. We will all feel this way till november. The fact is when the other team is throwing everything they've got at you, and is snapping at reporters, and outright lying, they have a problem. Trust me McCain's camp is looking at their organization in the states, the money they have to work with and internal numbers, and it does not look good. Thats politics, you realize the solid people you have and then the solid people your opponent has, and then the swings that can be swayed. When a campaign goes this negative this early it tells me that they have a lot less solid voters than the otehr guy and they are hoping for some kind of scandal to knock him down because they cant catch up. It happens all the time. Obama's people know this better than anyone else.

Obama's trip was not going to change this perception by itself. But Obama laid a solid foundation to build on (and destroyed much of McCain's foundation in the process).
Come debate time, McCain can no longer accuse Obama of naivety. Well, he can and probably will, but the fact that the Bush Adminstration and the Maliki government are backing Obama's policies, leaving McCain out on an island, does not give McCain much room to maneuver.
It will be during the debates when it becomes clear how much ground McCain has lost to Obama on this issue. That's when we'll see the polls move.

I agree with the first part of your statement, not the second. You can't destroy something that doesn't exist. Sure, McCain's credentials are an illusion but an annoyingly persistent one.
It is impossible to win a decisive victory over ignorance that will banish it forever, in other words, we will never have a really well informed electorate. We just have to fight the battles and do the best we can, then when the low-information voters perform their final gut-check, consult their Ouija boards or whatever means they use, it will hopefully be enough to put us over the top.

You know:
To think that a trip abroad was to result in an immediate shift in perceptions of Obama as credible on foreign affairs is just...stupid (and I don't use that word often. But I am sick, sick, sick of this kind of "reporting").
"Despite" trip - the wording - suggests that the trip was a miscalculation; a waste of time.
Obama's camp itself has said that the trip was meant to reduce people's "fears" that he would not be able to function on the world scene. People have to imagine Obama with world leaders. They assume, with no evidence, that McCain would be comfortable in these settings. Some people have to be constantly reassured about Obama. Geez: Don't you know that by now, Eric????? Don't you know why??????
So the pictures, the speech, the crowd...while not resulting in an immediate "bump," (and to expect a "bump" is to indicate a really profound lack of basic knowledge about how images do their work) - will hopefully factor into the "Obama" that people have in their heads when they ponder who they are going to vote for.
God: I really, really wish that there was more analytical sophistication in how these postings are written. I understand that some of the slippage in MSM has to do with really inexperienced people (you don't have to pay them as much)moving into positions of responsibility.
But I thought blogs were supposed to be better.

Eric, it's odd that you would focus on that number. After seeing the results of a poll conducted by a major news organization that has a sizable margin for Obama, and with Obama breaking 50%, what drove you to dig through the numbers to find something upon which you can craft a negative headline? I'm all for trying to stem irrational exuberance, but this is just silly.
