Obama On The Britney Ad: They're Painting Me As "Risky"

Did Barack Obama cry racism and xenophobia in responding to the Britney ad? Last night, Obama turned up the volume a notch in response to the spot:

"Since they don't have any new ideas the only strategy they've got in this election is to try to scare you about me. They're going to try to say that I'm a risky guy, they're going to try to say, 'Well, you know, he's got a funny name and he doesn't look like all the presidents on the dollar bills and the five dollar bills and, and they're going to send out nasty emails.

"And, you know, the latest one they've got me in an ad with Paris Hilton," Obama said, referring to a McCain campaign ad launched today. "You know, never met the woman. But, but, you know, what they're gonna try to argue is that somehow I'm too risky."

Some folks are arguing that Obama is accusing the McCain camp of racism. The dollar bill line sounds like it could be an allusion to race, but Obama has said similar stuff before, and this isn't quite conclusive enough to support that claim.

What's more, the "risky" part certainly doesn't have to be an allusion to race. Obama could easily be saying that the ad is painting him as "risky" by portraying him as a lightweight who doesn't have the leadership qualities necessary to be president.

Separately, it should probably be pointed out that the Republicans are not exactly strangers to using race to frighten voters, so it's perfectly reasonable for the Obama camp to expect such tactics to be used against him.

Late Update: The McCain campaign accuses Obama of playing the race card.

Can someone please explain why there is something wrong with calling what they say what it is?

Jesus Christ - is this thing rigged to the point where you can't be honest aobut it and about the GOP's motives? Fuck this -if they are being racist, then why do we have to tip toe and whisper?

user-pic

Obama can't even point out that he looks different than previous presidents.

The political punditry has managed to stir up another firestorm over this issue. "Obama's crying racism!" even though he isn't. But even if he came right out and said "Yes, they're going to use my race against me", is that wrong, somehow, to recognize reality?

user-pic

Which is ridiculous - that he can't even refer to the fact that he looks different because he doesn't look like a caucasian because he's mostly not.

Jesus god this is stupid. It's fucking Orwellian to the max.

More like W.E.B.DuBois-ian -- it's "Double Consciousness" all over.

user-pic

"Orwellian to the max". Perfect.

It seems like a depressing repeat of 2004. One campaign remains positive, focused on the candidate and the issues. The other gets right into the gutter and starts dishing smears. We know how that turned out.

If the voters fall for this crap, they'll get the president they so richly deserve.

user-pic

I agree.

I don't think they will, by and large. It is the same old thing - the GOP has been appealing to the lowest common denominator for years. They appeal to what is worst in us every damn time. That's all a negative campaign is - an invitation to be a hater.

The racists out there are not going to vote for Obama anyway.

That's because the GOP knows the masses are asses.
Yes, they will believe and focus on anything other than the issuss as that is how information works today..it is all entertainment, non-policy, personal and salacious.

The GOP understands that very well. Thank God Obama does also, which is why he responded at the same level...telling the story like it is gossip...see yall they are gonna say this, and they are gonna say that and they are gonna say I don't look like those Prez on bills...Obama is right!

He has to talk like this and he has to bring it home and say..yeah, I know they are saying ...AND he is black!!....saying that folks are saying that doesn't make Obama anymore racist than the folks who say it!!

If the folks who say it aren't racist, who the media constantly defend, and say that it is not racist to say he's black (which it isn't) then Obama isn't crying racism..when he points out what they say about him.

Even if everybody KNOWS that is precisely what is going on.

WE are can be in DENIAL.

Fine with me, as long as the sword cuts BOTH ways.

None of this Obama is cryin racism, cause he points out 'non-racist' comments made about him.

That dog won't hunt!!

We are all non-racist in America and Obama is just describing how he 'looks different' just like those other folks are.

I think you all should relax a little. All of the anger in the world didn't get Kerry elected...Racism will always be a part of the American fabric...'Get out the vote' http://www.enewsreference.wordpress.com

Hussein,

"We, the homophobes, the anti semites, the racists, the purveyors of hate, the greedy,
the bullies, the fascists, the war mongers,
the xenophobes, and the religious fanatics,
do hereby pledge our allegiance to the Republican Party."

They build the gallows that the Republicans use to hang them.

Your boy Obama appeals to the lowest of the low. Lets see, first we have Rev. Wright, the white-hating preacher man from Chicago, who Obama ONCE called his mentor. Then, and this is funny, we have Ludacris with his rap song supporting Obama calling Hillary a bit__ _ and saying McCain should be paralyzed and lets paint the white house black. Your Obama , like I pointed out yesterday is starting to slip in the polls, not only nationally but in key battelground states and this was happening before the Ludacris song. America is slowly but surely waking up to this empty suit who has associated himself with some of the most shady , white-racist people. Quit whining and face facts, your Obama ship is sinking. The only racist in this race is Obama and all his friends he's been throwing under the bus.

Call me Harold

user-pic

Zactly. Call me Harold Part Deux. Rove's "Country Club with an attractive woman" comment, putting Paris Hilton (gee what's she famous for) and Obama in the same sentence. It's pretty blatant "they're coming for our white women" kinda stuff.

Yeah, but that sycophant harold on Race to the White House (anyone else note how it is race this year instead of ROAD?) when Maddow correctly call all this 'presumptiousness'..nothing but code for 'uppitty negro'...Ford denied that it had racial overtones!!

He is such a suckup and especially to Buchannan, he makes me ill. It was Harold Ford, who Rove was describing when he said...he reminds you of the guy at the country club with the cigar and martini and pretty girl on his arm that makes snide commentary about the folks in the room...that is Harold to a 'T'..it ain't Obama...and Harold married Threlkeld and is wose than ever.

Everyone knows those 'call me harold' ads were just the same racial attack as 'presumptious...everyone BUT Harold Ford Jr that is!

I can't STAND harold ford jr..the scion from TN

user-pic

vicissitudes,

I agree with you, there was always something about Harold Ford that seemed sleazy to me.

For the sake of the party I'm sorry he lost that Senate election, but I'm not THAT sorry.

user-pic

I'm not sorry one bit. We're better off without him.

I think the mccain campaign is taking a risk. I dont think people are going to see this ad and think that obama is somehow risky. the britney ad was completely ridiculous and immature that people will laugh not take it seriously. McCain's image is going to be tarnished by all these attacks on obama, I mean the mccain camp should know this because it happened during the primaries...stupid attacks against Obama doesn't work.

Maturity Went Out The Window And People Noticed

robert gibbs' explanation is total bullshit. sorry. just say it for what it is. i mean the whole fucking media has been saying it for a year now. "IS HE ONE OF US?? HE'S EXOTIC! SO FOREIGN!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

The dollar bill line sounds like it could be an allusion to race, but Obama has said similar stuff before,

What similar stuff has he said?

I thought he used to have a section in his stump speech where he joked about how people were going to talk about how scary he was and how he was different and had a funny name, etc.

I just don't see what all the hoopla is all about over this because it doesn't seem far off from this previous stuff he was saying.

First of all, please stop using words like "cry" in reference to Obama. It feeds into the dandy, wimp narrative that is going around the right wing circles.

Second, Jake Tapper is a fucking idiot. I read that post last night and it's like he fell off of a turnip truck or something. If calling someone on their bullshit tactics is racist, then I guess there are A LOT of racists here at TPM.

Tell Tapper to pull his head out of his ass.

I can see why Obama wanted to control the message instead of people giving money to 527s. This MoveOn ad is lame, just like it's "hope" ad. They talk about McCain "dissappointing" them instead of pointing out that he raised more than $1 million from the oil industry within two weeks of announcing he wanted off-shore drilling.

I'm sick of everybody treating McCain with respect and acting as if he's just gone off his "straght talk" track. McCain has outright lied repeatedly and now he's being owned by big oil. Yet, nobody is calling him on it.

Based on Obama's track record, I have to believe he would know the trouble this comment would cause.

Strategically, I think the comment will cause short-term damage, but might have a strong long-term benefit:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/07/preemptive-strike.php

So this is Obama's response? I have to say, I'm not terribly impressed...

Now, I didn't really agree with the "let's-just-ignore-it-all" strategy that the Obama camp has seemed to be employing the last several weeks with regards to McCain's attacks, but at least it had it's own logic.

What does emphasizing/reframing the attacks as "risk"-mongering accomplish?

Were he going to respond, some of the responses put up here yesterday (e.g., "childish," "immature," "desperate," "tired") seemed much more effective to me.

It's called exposing the bullshit to the light. It's not like the media is going to call bullshit on the Republican tactics.

I'm so tired of the mainstream media pretending race is not an issue in this country. Why can't we have an open and honest discussion about race? Why do we get all hot and bothered when a person of color or woman cries racism or sexism, especially when the evidence is in our faces. McCain's is using race baiting tactics--that is no secret.

i don't think he is crying racism....but let's be real here--obama is considered risky mainly because he is black and more so than a non-traditional name, he has a muslim sounding name!...the "experience" mumbo jumbo floating around is just that, a flimsy cover up...

if any other young buck came around and did what obama has managed to do and continue to be dead on with avant-guard thinking, we would be thanking the good lord for his probable candidacy...

we are not comfortable with obama's look and their-in lies the fundamental difference in treatment...

the good news, he has enough of us to think like him behind to possibly tip the scale in a new direction!!! who would have ever thought that when we were teaching our kids to treat everyone as an equal, they would have listened huh?

The GOP is doing exactly what the Obama campaign and Barack are saying..planting race into this election and trying to scare voters....remember the Harold ford ad in 2006?

I'm all for calling these sleaze masters out and I hope Obama will keep this tactic out. Let the GOP explain how what they are doing is not about race and fear over and over again. They have no platform to convince the voters they can solve our issues and bring positive change ....I know they will only keep this up and in fact we haven't seen anything yet! This election will be all about the GOP ads and we haven't even scratch the surface with their sleaze and fear! wait until Sept and Oct when they have nothing to lose...they have no shame!

user-pic

I say O's team should really push this angle for a few days. Call McCain's campaign out for their Rovian tactics and make them respond. Make them deny they are dog-whistling racist scum. Make the charge stick enough for people to start asking if McCain is who they think he is.

It is time to attack McCain's credibility and the myth of his 'integrity.' His campaign is built on a lie. Take away the McCain myth and what you've got left is a 71 year old man with anger management issues.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a Bingo.

Yes indeedy. [terrorist fist bump]

Ditto.

EXACTLY.

So... why isn't it happening?

If it is, please show me how.

And remember, as Bob Schieffer effectively told John Kerry, exploding the "integrity" myth is essentially off limits in the corporate media.

More from Jamison Foser at Media Matters.

user-pic

I don't think that Obama is talking about race but that the Republicans are trying to paint Obama as "unAmerican", someone who is NOT that "one of us".

It doesn't have anything to do with race.

However, I personally think that there is subtle racism here. The GOP (and the media too) is trying to portray Obama as an "Uppity Negro" who doesn't know his place.

John McCain does weekly radio addresses as if he is President and no one calls him "presumptuous". John McCain created 2 TV ads in which he called himself "President McCain" and no one called him "arrogant". John McCain did a major speech in which he talked about how the world would be after his first term as president and no one said "who does he think he is".

This is a subtle form of racism going on on both the media's and the GOP's side.

They are trying to say that Obama is an "Uppity Negro" who doesn't know his place.

You are so right Maritza, way to clarify the muddled inconsistencies.

Team Obama are masters of race-baiting. White-Guilt ridden Democrats fell for it in the primaries, actually blaming the race-baiting on the Clintons. Well, the Clinton's are gone, yet the race-baiting continues. Sadly Obama brand of race-baiting won't work as well in the General Election.

Oh, I see, Bill Clinton comparing Obama's win in South Carolina to Jesse Jackson's victories there was actually Obama doing the race-baiting.
Just another bitter PUMA, 'eh?

Seizing on those comments and blowing them out of proportion was 'race-baiting', 'playing the race card' what ever you want to call it.

Guilty whites fell for it while AAs soaked it up.

user-pic

It was the media, not the Obama campaign, that seized on those issues.

You are consistently challenged by facts.

Obama did nothing to correct the 'media distortion'. If it works for you why change it?

Not his job to correct the Clintons' comments. That's for the Clintons to do--which they didn't.

user-pic

Thanks for acknowledging that it was media driven, and not the Obama campaign.

Guilty whites, my ass.

How about being sick of the Clintons?

Talk about playing the race card to explain the inevitable one's crushing defeat....AGAIN!

Pathetic.

user-pic

That's all Bk knows how to do - BK is not very bright, and that's putting it mildly.

Have you ever seen the cartoon version of The Boondocks, on the Cartoon Network?

His avatar is of the old, cranky black guy who continually gripes about his fellow "darkies" and "negras" acting all like animals and stuff.

That's where this douchebag is coming from. If I read his post, I get the character's voice in my head.

masters of race-baiting

Now that is a WWE pay-per-view smackdown I might actually watch...I'm picturing Trent Lott vs. Lou Dobbs, mano a mano, refereed by the chain-clanking ghost of Jesse Helms...

Maritza hit the nail on the head. McCain, the GOP and now the Washington-based press corps are calling Obama an "Uppity Negro" in every term but the one they really mean.

That said, I love the way Rachel Maddow smacked down Pat Buchanan on Wednesday, telling him on "Road to the White House" that his insistence on citing Dana Milbank's dishonest piece of crap column as proof positive, even after it was soundly debunked, said more about Buchanan than it did about Obama. Throw this back in their faces. They're bullies who squeal like stuck pigs when anyone stands up to them. Let them squeal.

word

Um, Raifan...it is RACE to the White House this year...how coincidental is that? All other years it has been ROAD but not this year!

And they accuse Obama of race baiting?

Please.

Not to mention that obsequious harold Ford..disagreeing with Maddow and claiming that the comments about presumptiousness have no racial undertons that 'ford hears'

Give. Me. A. Break.

That southern ass Ford knows DAMN well this entire semantics smacks of nothing BUT..."uppity negro..doesn't know his place"...guess Ford is tone deaf to that now after marrying Threlkeld. Even though that 'call me Harold' ad blew his Senate aspirations out of the water in TN.

The headline of this post, and its content, should be questioning McCain's use of race. To focus the post on Obama and whether he did/ didn't say anything about racism is to play into the right-wing project of painting Obama as overly sensitive and different (a ridiculous portrait, by the way.) We need to stop de-coding Obama's responses and start clearly naming McCain's offensive attacks.

user-pic
Maritza hit the nail on the head. McCain, the GOP and now the Washington-based press corps are calling Obama an "Uppity Negro" in every term but the one they really mean.

You got it - nail, hammer - that's just exactly it. It's The Obama is Uppity Week with the GOP. What else can they say at this point? He was fucking brilliant last week.

user-pic

Oh god spare me the gnashing of teeth from the media.

One week ago yesterday, the media - including TPM - was reporting breathlessly on a poll that showed "A solid 55% of registered voters view him as the "riskier" choice for president, compared to only 35% who say McCain is the bigger risk."

So Obama is answering back to that risk question, and the McCain campaign is trying to exploit it.

Shocker, huh.

user-pic

You're right! Thanks for connecting the messages.

user-pic

"So Obama is answering back to that risk question, and the McCain campaign is trying to exploit it."
No...no...no! Republicans are racists...they're too dumb to point out any risks posed by inexperience...it's always about race with them! Remember the "Southern Strategy!"

user-pic

I do remember the Southern Strategy. And so does John McCain. Don't twist what I said into something that excuses any of the vile things your compatriots have done over the years.

He's stating the facts. If someone wants to look at the facts and say McCain is using racist tactics, that's up to them, but don't blame Obama for it.

And I'm sure it was a coincidence to have the huge word FOREIGN next to his face in the celeb ad.

He is absolutely right, hell, how many right-wing attacks on Obama so far have been racist? Plenty. He certainly isn't talking about just McCain, or just the RNC, or just the Republicans. He is talking about swiftboaters and Fox News and his opposition in general. Hell yes racism has been, and will continue to be, part of their attacks.

Who cares? Crying racism and xenophobia? He isn't complaining, he is just saying it like it is, they will attack him with everything, and his race will be part of it. The Republican Party is rife with racism. Nothing shocking there. He certainly isn't complaining though.

user-pic

Exactly.

And instead of focusing on the race issue, could we focus on what he actually said? Is there anyone debating whether his comments are false? Anyone?

user-pic

Focus on reality?

Are you high?

No. Just on a conference call....

user-pic

Ahhhhh. The polar opposite of being high....

Everybody already knows that Barack has a funny name (he said so himself) and doesn't look like the guys on paper currency, so those are not focal points for the GOP ads.

As for the Paris Hilton ad I think it is petty and silly. That's not hot.

Little presumptuous for him to be talking about his face being on a dollar bill. You need to have at least three pets before you can broach that subject.

user-pic

...I think you have to be dead already too.

Britney and Paris celebrities. To Britney's career has taken her from trailer park to Disney to Pop Tart to Rehab. A real american success story. Paris is socialite turned her 15 minutes in the spotlight into the Paris Phenom. She may be a celebrity, but she's an empty suit.

The ad is implying that Obama is either an empty suit or headed for a fall. Neither of these has anything to do with race.

He was making a commentary on their overall tactics, rather than just offering a rebuttal to the Britney ad.

Dammit, stop playing on McCain's turf. Don't just whine about McCain's tactics; hit back. He's a confused old fool. He wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years. He's George Bush's third term. L'audace, l'audace, toujours l'audace!

After several really scummy ads from McCain about which the media does not call the McCain campaign onto the carpet. They are more likely to show the ad for free - which is what McCain's campaign expects, after all, these are made for TV news ads. We now have to watch Obama navigate an off-the-cuff comment about said ads.

Does anyone in the media even watch the stuff McCain puts up?

To use McCain's comments from months ago to provide cover for his current campaign staff is just infuriating.

And Greg, you are part of the problem. The rhetorical question as the lede, with no direct contradiction is all we can expect from the "liberal media." The right wing media feels no such compunction.

user-pic

If McCain doesnt start pulling ahead in the polls soon, I expect the Willy Horton ad be taken out and dusted off.

How come Obama is being described as Black and not White?

user-pic
How come Obama is being described as Black and not White?

Yes, this all reminds me of Groucho Marx's story about taking his daughter to a swimming pool. Turns out the pool was restricted and they didn't allow Jews. So Groucho replied to the desk clerk "But my daughter's only half Jewish. Can't she go in the water up to her knees?"

user-pic

stemper,

hahaha, I love the Marx Brothers, especially Groucho. :-)

Its wrong, IMO, for Obama to directly attack or even address THIS particular ridiculous, childish, desperate attempt by McCain. Will only cause trouble. Obama should deal with other ones, but something so lame does not dignify a response. He can only get into trouble if he even hints (or it can be perceived as hinting at...) at race. Just say no, Barack!

Isn't it amazing how they can turn the discussion from, is McCain going too far with his low blows? to is Obama another Negro crying "racism!"?

user-pic

Obama's telling it like it is -- making people think whether they want to or not. His remarks also diminish and marginalize McCain.

The racists won't change. However, I'm beginning to suspect there are a lot of people out there who are afraid to admit they are coming around to Obama. That's awful to say, but a stark reality, especially here in the south.

I've been sporting an Obama sticker on my car for over a year. There have been times when I've been more than a little nervous about it. Then I think about the courage Obama shows every day putting himself out there. The teensy sliver of courage I have to muster to drive out of my garage is pathetic by comparison.

Obama and his campaign know what they're doing.

and the closest racist on this board and beyond will run to say "see obama should have never said what he said",.....obama needs to keep repeating it!

give me a break mccain!!

To quote one of my favorite movies "... whatever your problems, I can assure you (Sen. McCain) is not the least bit interested in solving them. His only interested is telling you to fear them and telling who to blame for them. That's his tactic and that's how you win elections." McSame's tactics are carbon copied out of the anti-christ Rove's playbook. Be afraid, hate everything that isn't attack mode and vote your fear." All Americans must vote their conscience. Be strong and say enough is enough. Do not reward the GOP by voting for McCain. America can simply do better than to vote for an angry 72 year old relic who suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome). Evidence is clear that McCain was tortured so severely in Vietnam that he tried to commit suicide. On the campaign trail, including interviews with media professionals, McCain has exhibited a consistent failure to recall basic facts and has been known to lash out in anger and sing strange songs like "Bomb Bomb Iran" to the tune of the Beachboys Barbara Ann. In my opinion, McCain's behavior indicates the onset of Alzheimers, senility or at least some form of mental illness, which should have been treated a long time ago.

The Mainstream media and McCain's handlers have focused on selling Americans on imagery of the "War Hero...Maverick...Naval Aviator" while hiding the disturbing side of McCain. Nine out of 10 POW's who returned from Vietnam were diagnosed with PTSD. Despite his wearing Navy ballcaps regularly and posing as a TOP GUN ala Tom Cruise, all evidence illustrates that McCain was a horrible pilot, nearly flunked out of the Naval Academy where he spent more of his time behind a bar stool than studying and preparing to become a proficient pilot. McCain was unprepared for Vietnam and is admittedly unprepared now. He has stated that "the economy is not my strong suit" and "I need my assistants to log me on to the internet. I have no use for email." ----Is this the type of Maverick America needs right now...or an old ignorant schmuck who is the Trojan Horse of the GOP & the NEOCONS? McCain is off his rocker and many in his own party know it which is why they want a stabilizing force (i.e., Mitt Romney) who the business community trusts on the ticket. If Mccain were a product you purchased at a store, you would return it for being broken or defective.

Know this, while Reagan's Alzheimers is believed to have taken hold in his second term, were we to elect McCain President, we would be putting someone in the White House who might in fact be mentally ill or at least mentally unstable at present. The mainstream media is ignoring the evidence. You don't have to. Google: 'McCain PTSD'

From "The American President".

Sorkin at his finest.

user-pic

Obama needs to fight fire with fire. If he's Britney, then McCain is a cross between Mel Gibson and Dick Clark.

user-pic

inches away from the perfect comment...you should have said "Bea Arthur and Anne B. Davis."

It would be dumb to call white people racists while asking for their votes. Barack Obama has found the defining narrative of McCain08, without mentioning race at all.

John McCain can't say anything good about himself. His supporters can't say anything good about him. McCain has no choice but to try scaring people; doubt and fear are all he has left.

i think mcgrumpy is the bigger risk. first of all, his age. the man might drop dead after winning the election (which he won't. win that is). second of all, he is a repub. do we want them back in? they have made a mess of everything

The best comeback is the short jab. I hate to say it but Reagan had a good one: "There you go again!" Remember that one? It worked.

So let's do a little brainstorming shall we?

Obama's jab might be:

(on troop withdrawal) "Get your own campaign"
(on off-shore drilling and the gas tax) "you have a dependency on bad ideas"
(on his geography gaffes) "I said 'map' not 'nap'"
(on 'no child left behind')"no child, just teachers and schools"
(on the environment)"I guess Anwar is not part of environment"
(on more of the same) "You had your chance"
(This can be a tag line to anything as in: "I may not have been around as long as you have . . . (tag) . . . but what happened to your face?" or, does it hurt you as much as it hurts me?

talk amongst yourselves. . .

user-pic

I don't know...."If you don't vote for me you're a racist" seems to be working fine.

Seriously, how hard is it to point out that 1) Brit was one of those uneducated Bush supporters who once said we should just trust Bush and shut up about minor issues like the war in Iraq (as did millions of other f-tards) and 2) that Paris would benefit enormously from tax policies of a McCain administration, and would certainly be more likely to frequent to circles of a multimillionaire heiress and the son of successive generations of navy admirals...

It's not that difficult, but I suppose such obvious points are verboten in the breathless media.

I support Obama.
I trust Obama.

Newsflash: McCain played the race card...by saying Obama played race card. Don't be fooled.

Obama has a real vision for the future,
McCain has no idea.
OBAMA '08!

"Obama has a real vision for the future"

This includes:

1) windfall taxes on "big oil." Anyone with a brain knows the oil companies will pass these costs onto the consumers.

2) universal health care. Great, rationed health care for everyone.

I can hardly wait!

Its already happening:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080731/ap_on_el_pr/obama

What the heck does Obama mean by "I don't look like all the other people on a dollar bill"? Not wearing a wig? Not old? No-he means he's not white. He should have just said that.

I would try and have a civil debate with you, Tena, but obviously you'd rather engage in, playground name-calling.
