Obama Courting Montana Voters Today
Barack Obama is spending today in an unlikely place for a Democratic candidate for president: Montana, a state that has only voted Dem twice in the last 50 years but where a recent poll has put him ahead. It's a further indication of just how the wide the playing field could be this year.
The Associated Press notes that Obama has hired staff and targeted the state with his ad campaign, while John McCain has zero paid staff here and has yet to visit.

Isn't John McCain resting at home today?

Well, the 4th of July parade up in Arroyo Seco that I just got home from was the best parade I've ever been to. Codepink was in the parade, there were about 5 different Obama for president groups, a group from Taos just went to Iran to forge ties and try to stop this nonsense about Iran, and they carried a sign in the parade and the other floats were all anti-Bush, anti-war. Everyone one of them.
I was in heaven. I've spent the last 10 4ths up in Colorado with a bunch of retired Republicans.
I've finally come home - Taos is just it.

He's out campaigning on the 4th, McCain is taking the day off.
Imagine the brouhaha and attacks on Obama's patriotism if the reverse had happened.

LOL!
Obama was supposed to do well in the west.
He's doing splendidly in the Taos Valley and environs.
The main street in Arroyo Seco is about 2 blocks long and there 4 different tables set up where people were registering voters and selling Obama tee shirts.

Happy 4th...and I enjoy posts! Glad you had fun and Taos sounds like they great celebration!

I think Taos has a parade, but I'm not sure - this was just outside of Taos, but half of Taos was there, so it's about the same thing.
And yeah, Taos likes parties. A lot.
But what is so soothing for me is that everyone here thinks like I do.
I'm from Dallas, and that's where I live in the winter. I used to spend summers in Colorado, but I was surrounded by the same Repugs I lived with in the winter.
Everyone around here except Donald Rumsfeld, is a liberal. They don't like Repugs as much as I don't.
I think I must have died, because this has to be heaven.
Or close enough - it's where old hippies come to die. I'm in the right place. ;)

We live in ABQ and go up to Taos at least once a year. Often some festival or another is going on and it's a great place to kick back. Must be great to live there, but after visiting Sedona, I think most of the hippies end up there!
Happy 4th!

Hi Tena,
My in laws are even seeing lots of Obama support in Roswell ( which is majority Hispanic) - its beginning to look like the fifty state strategy will be a good one for the Democrats this cycle. Say what you will about Chairman Dean -and I have & will again - but the good doctor's decision to take the Party to all fifty states certainly appears brilliant now !
And what did Sen Obama say today in Montana - "ninety percent of success in life is just showing up ! "
Is it just me are other stalwart progressives feeling like we have crossed the Rubicon - or more appropriately the Pecos ? I just remember feelin vaguley desperate about now in 2004 when Kerry was running,,not all as optimistic as now !

Do you think Obama is considering Montana's governor Brian Schweitzer as a VP candidate?
July 4, 2008 8:26 PM | Reply | Permalink
I don't know, but I sure hope he's considering Gov. Schweitzer.
The Governor used to work in Saudi Arabia as an engineer; he could rip McCain on energy security with one hand tied behind his back. He knows his shit.

I like this idea. I likes it a lot - a western governor with that kind of background - oooo.

Considering his profile, there's a good chance that Brian Schweitzer was or is in the running for Obama's VP pick.
And, truth be told, I think he would be a better pick than Jim Webb or Strickland.

I heard some talkinghead recently recount that Sen. Joe Tester had said (obviously before the nomination was decided) that of all the Dems in the field, Tester thought that Obama was the only Dem who had a chance at winning Montana.
I, too, like Schweitzer.
The corporate-pig media would diss it as "he can only bring 3 electoral votes," which would give them yet another opportunity to display the shallowness of their political analysis (big surprise).
