Obama Campaign Hits McCain Iraq Ad As "Misleading," Uncivil

Obama campaign spokesperson Bill Burton releases a statement hitting back at the McCain campaign's ad pillorying Obama on Iraq:

"While Barack Obama wants to change American foreign policy to wind down the war in Iraq and address the grave threat posed by a resurgent al Qaeda and Taliban in Afghanistan, John McCain offers this patently misleading negative ad. Given his calls for a civil campaign, it's disappointing that Senator McCain has slipped so easily into the same, tired campaign tactics that have become so familiar to the American people."

I assume they are going to do more than issue a statement. It was actually pretty good timing by the McCain campaign (knowing that Obama would be preoccupied with his overseas trip).

Not good enough.

It's time for a major ad buy on "Social Security is a disgrace" commercial, with the "call Senator McCain and ask him why he hates old people who don't have the luxury of living off his rich wife's family fortune..." command at the end of the commercial.

avatar

You really didn't think they would roll out an ad in an hour did you? Give them 48 hours (I suspect less, but we'll see).

The McCain ad is tame. Nobody will make too much of it other than the people who want to hear it. Obama should quit pooping on his base and he'll be fine. Save the money for something else. This doesn't require a huge push-back.

McCain's blunder concerning BO's Iraq visit should cover this and then some -- and it's free.

Damn right, bring out the BIG GUNS and fire back, even better go on the attack. Time and time again the Obama campaign is responding to tripe like this. Hit hard, hit harder!!

That handle you're using is intended to be ironic, isn't it?

No, not really.

The candidate losing the election always has to go negative. Sen. Clinton did the same thing in the Dem Primary as have basically every candidate running in second place.

Obama can't hit back hard because he is supposed to be "new politics" and above it all. There is nothing the McCain Camp would love more than to get into a mudslinging battle with Obama. It's like that old saying goes - Don't argue with an idiot because they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Obama just needs to stop allowing McCain and Co from re framing the Iraq issue. It's not about the surge working or not it's about not being there in the first place. Did the surge bring back the 4000+ young Americans killed, did it heal the tens of thousands of American soldiers injured (to varying degrees), or bring back to life the the hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqi's or heal the hundreds of thousands injured Iraqi citizens or refund the trillions of dollars spent on the war that could have went to much better use at home. That is the only way the surge could work for a war that should have never been fought.

Absolutely right. Stop letting McSame frame the debate on virtually EVERYTHING (certainly all military and defense issues). An add touting his prescience on everything from Iraq to Afghanistan to Iran (a la Josh's post on TPM) would be a nice start to re-focus America on the truth, rather than McSame's tired attacks.

That said, I do think they need to come back with something a lot stronger than this mealy-mouthed statement. The "well that's certainly not civil" response is the blandest, most overused nonsense of a response, from all the campaigns, that we've heard ad nauseum in this election. It's disappointing we have to keep hearing it.

Boring!!!....

I disagree though, solely because the traditional media is an accessory to McCain's attack, and its only a matter of time before Obama will need to attack anyway, because Obama'll be down in the polls.

Excellent analysis.

"The candidate losing the election always has to go negative."

That's the brilliant analysis that won the election for Kerry in Nov. 04!

A press release won't do. Voters aren't reporters. They need a response ad.

Here's my suggestion:

1. "John McCain thinks he can mislead you with dishonorable attacks while Barack Obama is away meeting with America's allies."

2. "What John McCain isn't telling you is that he has repeatedly voted against funding for our soldiers and veterans. He even voted against the new GI Bill that would help our brave men and women train for new jobs."

3. "And while Obama was attending full committee hearings on the war in Afghanistan, John McCain skipped every single one of his hearings to campaign for president."

4. "After eight years of dishonesty, it's time for some real straight talk. Barack Obama has a plan to work together with our commanders on the ground to get our troops home by 2010. He's leading the way forward on Afghanistan, believing we need to end the distractions and take the fight to Al Qaeda's own backyard."

5. "John McCain only wants to continue with the policies of George W. Bush. Is it any wonder why he doesn't want to tell it straight?"
[cue footage of McCain and Bush hugging]

The corresponding points:
1) McCain is dishonorable, a mis-leader, maybe even cowardly.
2) McCain is a hypocrite, doesn't care about veterans and he doesn't think about the economy they're returning to.
3) McCain is a hypocrite and blindly ambitious, while Obama is responsible and engaged.
4) Obama is the real straight-talker, he's got plans and wants to kick bin Laden's ass.
5) McCain isn't honest, he wants to be just like Bush, he doesn't talk straight, he might even be a little fruity for him.

You should email the campaign. It's a good start.

or just post it to your mybarackobama blog.

Best ad I've read/seen/heard from Obama in weeks. Please get that funded and produced!

Excellent points stroszek. You should e-mail them the fluffy Burton. Where is the Obama who was supposed to not to hold his punches in the GE ? By now, he should have had a series of ads made and running about the Mclame's blunders, flip-flops, religion baiting, McConomics etc. etc.

The WO!rld TO!ur's put McBush in real pickle. From Iran to Pakistan to Iraq to Afghanistan, he's got em appeasing like chickenhawks with their heads cut off.

Sarkozy's mouthpiece Le Figaro's even caught on, preparing the ground for The Visit?

Bush's about-face on Iran

B.S. Statement?

Are they serious?

I hope they're going to do more than just releasing a statement that no one will ever pay attention toward.

Cut an ad {SCREAMING}...NOW

Of course it was misleading and uncivil . . . It was put out by a Republican.

avatar

Fire Bill Burton. Seriously, this is weak.

If I had his job, I'd do a point-by-point takedown of the ad.
1. Barack Obama has attended multiple Foreign Relations Committee hearings on Afganistan, while John McCain was absent for every single one.
2. He was in Iraq 2 years ago.
3. John McCain also voted against funding when it was attached to a timetable for withdrawal.
4. Obama's consistent, unflinching position: "1-2 brigades per month, 16 months."
5. John McCain voted against funding our veterans medical care. He also opposed the new GI bill and failed to even show up to vote on it.

See, iff Bill Burton had balls he'd take the 5 points I just laid out and turn them into an ad. But that would make to much sense, wouldn't it?

avatar

Aborton,

I agree. There have been previous calls in the past among Obama supporters to fire Bill Burton. What a is mute and pathetic response to a dishonest and misleading ad.

Agreed. I think "Bill Burton" is the name of the fill-in-the-blank-with-attack-we-are-responding-to software they use at the headquarters.

McCain's bullshit can be picked apart five ways to Tuesday in about 8 seconds, as you have aptly demonstrated.

avatar

You folks have no trust in the Obama campaign.

The ad rolled a few hours ago. No rapid-response team is THAT fast. If there's no response ad in a day or two, then jump on your soapboxes.

I'm going to take the contrarian position for a change.

I don't think that the McCain ad needs more than a statement, perhaps some surrogate Sunday talk show comment.

Let the trip speak for itself. Starting it off with a big ad war will only reduce the effectiveness

I suspect that is just what McCain's looking for

Hate to say it, but this response reminds me a lot of the Clinton campaign and its "whatever happened to the politics of hope" response we heard so often during the primaries.

Count me among those who find this response lame.

Personally, I'd hit McCain on his bullshit Iraq stroll every time he's stupid enough to utter the word "Iraq."

avatar

The gloves are off...and this is just the beginning.

Remember the words of John Kerry: "The most crooked guys ever seen". They will not stop at nothing.

The mistake of four years ago must not be repeated.

Not this time.

Not much content. Doesn't really specifically address anything in the ad. Maybe they thought they didn't need to.

Republican voter = low information

A statement isn't enough but I have noticed that in this election so far when the Repubs put out an attack ad, then the next day or the day after that the Obama campaign responds with a counterattack ad.

They have had 2 counterattack ads both which have been quite good: 1st is the one which shows McCain hugging Bush and that he has voted with Bush 95% of the time. The 2nd is the radio attack which talks about McCain, McSame as Bush.

Look to see a biting counterattack ad by the Obama campaign soon.

You won't see a counterattack any time soon.
The McCain ad's going to be out of date in a few days

WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama intends to sit down with European leaders as well as King Abdullah of Jordan, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas as part of a campaign-season trip that aides described Friday as substantive rather than political

It's not rocket science folks. The LAST and worst move the Obama campaign could make would be to run a counterattack POLITICAL advertisement two days before he leaves on this trip

Let the Republicans continue to wonder whether to S--T or go brown. They're just giving Obama rope for their hanging

He's even meeting Netanyahu (cringe)

And the GOP is running attack ads in the JERUSALEM Post!

Thank God the campaign's not dumb enough to go for the bait

avatar

This is BS. It's almost like, "Are you trying to lose, Senator?" He better put out a good counter-ad. No weak tea.

Can't wait for the Obama attack ads which will use "social security is a disgrace" and America is a "nation of whiners" and we are in a "mental recession".

I actually don't think that that McCain attack ad is that good. It definitely could have been far worse. I actually think that it is a little wimpy.

avatar

Calm down, folks. Re-read the statement. The statement had multiple aims. The primary one was to lay the groundwork for returning fire on McCain by establishing that McCain has fired the opening salvo in a negative ad war; they've laid the onus of the negativity squarely at McCain's feet. Furthermore, they call the ad "patently misleading." So, they are not boxed in at all, in fact, they've deftly placed themselves in position to hit back hard and frame any returned fire as "setting the record straight." But most importantly, they suggest that McCain is not running the civil campaign he's promised. Thus, they are justified in defending themselves. Ultimately, it seems that they're saying, "Ok, we thought we'd have a civil campaign. But, apparently McCain doesn't want that. So, don't be surprised if we take our gloves off too." Expect a strong response soon.

Did anybody read the Ryan Lizza piece about Obama in the New Yorker?

If you had than you would know that Obama can be RUTHLESS when he needs to be.

Obama is no Obambi. Obama will bring a gun to a knife fight. Gloves are coming off...

You're right. Very interesting view of how Obama moved through Chicago politics while remaining ethical.

avatar

LOL, remaining ethical? YOu think the man has an ounce of integrity in his bone/ Check out this article http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/17/AR2008071701839.html?nav%3Dhcmodule&sub=AR

This sitty figure is full of himself.

Richard Wolf on Countdown gets it. The McCain ad will be out of date in a few hours

Which we might not have known this if McCain hadn't made a point of leaking the schedule to the public. Nice of him to basically puncture one of his own talking points I guess?

This is the guy who slams social security as a "disgrace", takes the checks; scraped Phil Gramm from under the bus and threw him back under in one day, and plans a visit to Czechoslovakia to do battle with the Russians

Sit back, take a deep breath, enjoy the World Tour on your favorite network and watch em squirm

I'm all for vinegar too, and the sooner the better.

Wes Clark as VP has been growing on me after time. It would focus attention on McCain's foreign policy credentials, tying a neat ribbon around the Republican's giving in to Obama's paradigm, McCain's oft-repeated (and sure to be reprised) gaffes and, most importantly, McCain's war experience as cred.

Compared to Clark, McCain appears slight - valedictorian v. last in class; real military executive experience v. bs about refusing position as admiral; helped orchestrate successful, complex military operation v. naive, wrongheaded, shortsighted warmongering viz. Iraq, inability to identify salient threats from abroad, etc, etc.

Your avatar reminds me of Europe '72, btw.

avatar

I doubt Obama will poop on his base again.... trust me, he got the memo!!

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!! blunders from McWar are free...

What a pretty little statement by the Obama camp... as in Day Camp. And all the while the Republican swarm of thugs and villains prepares to continue the assualt virtually unassailed by their "honorable" opponents.

Obama was quoted not too long ago that he didn't think one should bring a knife to a gunfight. If this is what he's talking about then he's full of it. I was looking for them to unload a couple of clips and bust a cap up the Republican's asses but alas it was not to be. This pansy ass "statement" does nothing to counter the lies of the Republican ad. It's flowery prose will be utterly lost on the public and of course lost on the brain dead corporate media.

The only effective response would be hellfire and brimstone, a snarling retort that includes the word: "LIES!" and that characterizes this bullshit as exactly what it is. It's known as fighting back. But no, we have a nice tea party defense of Obama's sullied "characta" as the genteel Scarlett O'Hara and friends might say.

It is difficult not to chuckle in mordant fashion as the Obama spokespeople unruffle their lace cuffs and sniff at the ungentlemanly conduct of the Republican swine. Perhaps they ae considering challenging the McCain camp to meet them on the field of honor one day? Meanwhile, McCain and his Republican filth reload every barrel they have with more sewage and infected bile for the next volly. Will these DC Democrats ever understand that when someone spits in your face, calls you a coward and dares you to fight back that it's time to kick his ever lovin ass six ways to Sunday and make him like it? Oy! Until they do that, we are doomed to lose.

avatar

How about this, go negative by expressing sympathy for McCain's in ability to control the Rove-Cheney wing of the Republican party.

I honestly believe that McCain is not all bad, and would have been a reasonably good President if elected in 2000. But the McCain of today just doesn't have the balls, back, or brains to retake his party from the Cheney-Rove crowd. If McCain is elected it's another 4 years of Cheney-Rove (even if both of those guys die, it's the people they have placed throughout the party.

So say that. Every time one of these ugly-false attack ads remind every American that the reason the ad is out is because McCain can't control the neo-cons; McCain can't make the neo-cons irrelavent!

My response from the Obama camp read like this:
"John McCain promised to run a campaign I take him at his word that he wants to do exactly that. Unfortunately, this ad X is another example that he can not control the Cheney-Rove wing of the Republican party."

Everytime one of these ads comes out, every American should think Cheney-Rove.

Why???
Because it's true!
Everytime we see this filth it is easy to connect it to Cheney-Rove because we all know that is the kind of people Cheney and Rove are. If John McCain is elected the Cheney-Rove wing of the party will be running the country. And we all know that is not a good thing.

avatar

Do you sense a theme here?
Bush is gone on January 20, and people are happy about that. But there are two people like liked than Bush, even by the people who still like Bush.
And they just happen to be the same two people who will be running the show if McCain is elected.

The meme can change, to more accurately reflect the truth -- if McCain is elected, we will have 4 more years of Cheney and Rove. Suddenly McSame is even more scary and easier to believe.

Excellent points. Don't just stop with Bush's 3rd term. Call it the fucking trifecta of Bush-Cheney-Rove coterie's 3rd term. Many people have an innate hatred for the last two since Bush is seen a idiotic moron and could earn some sympathy points.

avatar

wish they'd drop the nice talk - it's not "patently misleading," it's "lying" . . .

Obama started the negative uncivil attacks when he lied about what McCain said about Iraq (100 years), so this is nothing but crocodile tears.

avatar

mcsame didn't say he wanted to stay in Iraq for 100 years ???

what planet are you on ???

mcsame is really looking like a fool today

or didn't ya hear ???

Al Maliki endorsed Obama's 16 month plan

so much for mcsame's judgment

but you keep telling people that mcsame never said he wanted to stay in Iraq for 100 years

it really helps the Democrats down ticket when the repuglitards endorse this lying asshat

avatar

Actually, McSame didn't vote against the GI bill--he just didn't bother to vote (just in the interest of accuracy).

He was, however, vocally and publicly against it before it magically became the bill that he heroically got passed....

avatar

While I'm all for nuanced, straightforward statements, I have to agree that that statement is as weak as water. It ain't got no bite, as if whoever wrote it had removed their dentures.

They need to release statements with more vinegar, like Stroszek's excellent point-by-point response.

As suggested by others, please send it to the Obama campaign or at least post it on your Obama site blog.

avatar

Why not a spoof campaign ad?

John McCain presents his new Social Security Plan:

Don't depend on a government handout!
Don't rely on a government pension!
My plan assures you a bontiful retirement.

Dump your wife and marry a young beautiful heiress.

You are so right. Obama needs to stay on his winning message rather than allowing himself to get sidetracked by responding to the tripe being put out by McCain.
