New Obama Spanish-Language Radio Ad Emphasizes His Fatherless Upbringing
Is the Obama campaign selectively referring to his long-absent father in some ads and not in others, depending on the target audience?
The question -- which was answered by the Obama campaign with a resounding No -- was posed to the Obama campaign on a conference call with reporters today where Obama aides unveiled a new Spanish language radio ad that emphasizes his fatherless upbringing to appeal to struggling immigrants.
"Some people have power and connections," says the ad, which will run in Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, and Nevada. "But most of us have to make our own way through life."
"This is true even for the man who could become the next President ... Barack Obama," the ad continues. "He grew up without a father -- raised by his mother with the support of his grandparents."
On the conference call, Politico reporter Ben Smith asked whether the decision to include his father in some ads but not others was a strategic one.
The Obama campaign flatly rejected the premise of the question. "There's no strategy going on to eliminate him by any stretch," senior Obama adviser Steve Hildebrand said. The campaign also cited Obama's books and speeches mentioning his dad.
Full script of the ad after the jump.
"Nuestro Propio Camino"
[BO:] I´m Barack Obama and I approve this message.
[VO:] Some people have power and connections.
But most of us have to make our own way through life.
This is true even for the man who could become the next President ... Barack Obama.
He grew up without a father -- raised by his mother with the support of his grandparents.
Through student loans and hard work, he graduated from college.
Obama never forgot his roots...
He worked with churches to help families get job training and after-school care for their children.
In the State Senate, he passed a law that helped reduce the welfare roles by over 80% by helping families to secure jobs.
And despite the political pressure, Obama has stood with us for immigration reform and spoke out for our veterans.
It's time we had a President who understands we all deserve a chance to make our own way.

I think this is fairly ridiculous, he does talk about it a lot and he's going to be talking about his bio even more at the convention.

I actually think it isn't - I don't think enough people know that part of McCain's bio. And if they did, his POW service would be enough to wipe away the "elitist label."
More than anything, this is a pushback against the "elitism" charge, and a way to connect with the Hispanic community, large swaths of which are working class.

Excellent point.
In the interest of fair and balanced reportage, when will someone ask McCain about his father's influence on him?

Greg, any chance on a post dedicated to the CBS McCain surge story?
According to Politico CBS has now defended it's actions thusly:
Aint that a kick in the ass? I understand editing for time, but they can't just interchange answers, can they? Why isn't this a big deal?
July 23, 2008 12:47 PM | Reply | Permalink
If you have to edit for time, you edit out WHOLE questions and answers, you don't cut and paste answers to different questions. THAT IS DECEPTION, pure and simple. We rely on the media to accurately portray what the candidate's are saying, and they are essentially counterfeiting what the politicians are saying, and in this case they are doing it to protect McCain. How many other responses to questions have been edited and replaced and doctored?? We have no way of knowing, but given how the media is carrying McCain's water, this catch probably isn't the first time it has happened.
And yes, waiting for a real post on that.

Exactly. Also, unless CBS news has become intellectually bankrupt, you edit the same'ol, same'ol, already heard that one part of the interview retaining the "new" news.
McCain was certainly making "new" news.

Hmmmm. Now John McCain's father was where, when he was growing up?
Oh, that's right, the Admiral was right there.
Who's freaking elite in this race?

Greg,
while you're at it, McCain Campaign Accuses Obama Of Supporting Genocide!
It's on HuffPost and DKos.

I would dispute the headline here. The ad does not appear to emphasize the absence of Obama's father; it merely mentions it as part of a larger narrative. Now, if you were to say that the ad emphasizes Obama's humble origins, I think that would be more accurate.

Seriously, you are bringing up this nonsense while McCain is running around exploiting the Holocaust to attack Obama??

Yeah, he mentioned his family, big deal.
Urg, I can't stand the media, nor can I stand it when decent liberal media regurgitates the ridiculousness, the worst seems to be HuffPo.

Obama's been in private prep school since 5th grade and went to Harvard as a legacy.
He must be speaking from personal experience when he says, "Some people have power and connections."

With all the advantages afforded to them, is it any surprise that all 43 presidents have been biracial Hawaiians with the middle name "Hussein"?

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Off-topic but Rasmussen just released new Florida numbers. Obama is up by one w/o leaners and up by 2 with leaners. Has Rasmussen entered bizarro world? I expected the exact opposite re: Ohio/Florida.

Wasn't he essentially abandoned by his mother, too? Left in the care of his grandparents while she worked out of the country, pursuing her career? Seems to me Obama should be giving sermons about the strengths of black women compared to his mother, instead of sermons about the weaknesses of black men. But I guess we have to consider his target audience.

It does not surprise me in the least that Ben Smith was the one to ask this question.
I have heard Senator Obama many times, in front of diverse crowds, and in different ads talk about his upbringing. He's written about it extensively.
Keep digging Ben, I'm sure you'll hit the bottom of the slime pile soon.
