New Obama Ad: McCain's Attacks Are "Same Old Politics"

The Obama campaign is airing a tough new ad responding to the multiple McCain attack ads we've been seeing lately:

The ad continues using the strategy the Obama camp used in the primary to great effect. It dismisses Mccain's attacks as the "politics of the past," "the low road," and, most cuttingly, the "same old politics," thus simultaneously rising above the fray, dismissing McCain's attacks without engaging them, and amplifying the Obama change message.

The Obama campaign has not yet released details on where the ad will run.

GREAT AD!! only wish they would have come out sooner but this is good!

If it came out any sooner, it wouldn't have the quotes in it, and half the people in America wouldn't even know what it was responding to.

user-pic

They do seem to have a pretty calculated sense as to where in the arc of a particular news cycle is the most effective point to strike back. My impression is that they always wait for the thing to hit what seems like a peak and try to catch it just as the Meeedia would be looking for the next development, so that they end up getting the last word. Am I wrong or haven't we seen this pattern a number of times? How effective it is is the question. So far, not too bad. But it can lead to some nail biting on the part of his supporters--"Why doesn't he hit back? Please, not another John Kerry above-it-all non-response strategy, it doesn't work!!!!"

To paraphrase a few of my own posts here 'n' there.

As a practical matter it's imperative that a response to a negative ad be made as quickly as possible. But as a matter of prudence, no size fits all, as a response to each ad should be dictated by the nature of the ad. at issue.

**There is NO DOUBT about him being another John Kerry.

I was going to say all ads should have McCain in black and white and Obama in color because it was like The Wizard of Oz. However at the end Dorothy wanted to go home to the black and white life she knew so maybe not...

So Jonze, you've been understandably critical of Team Obama's responses or lacktherof - what did you think about this ad?

It was necessary even if it's too uncontroversial to possibly get the free coverage McCain's hatchet ads get from the MSM. Obama using outside quotes to call McCain's honesty into question was a good idea as well, because it allows him to appear to stay above the fray. If he is questioned about calling John McCain a liar, he can just point to where those quotes came from as well as point to the two big articles from today that conclude McCain's "not visiting the troops because of no camera" ad as blatantly false and an attempt to mislead.

I assume this will get aired wherever McCain decided to air his "Celebrity" ad. I read elsewhere that the Obama Camp said it didn't know how many buys they would make for this ad which I read to say that it's up to the McCain camp. If the McCain camp wants to air the smear ads, Obama will air this ad which essentially calls McCain a liar.

Of course I'm waiting for the McCain ad "Barack lies too".

Obama smacks the crap without getting soiled with this ad. Bravo and encore!

You have to give it to BO campaign team. the response time to JM ad was lightening fast.

I just posted in another thread that this was solid ad, but I bet we'll see many of the chicken littles and handwringers saying that the ad was too late, or not strong enough, guess I was right.

This is a solid ad. Instead of 3 or 4 contradicting ads the Obama campaign has released just 1, that can be used to combat all the previously released McCain ads.

Notice that the ad does not try to respond to any particular McCain ad. It's aimed at all the attacks, and brings the issue back to the economy which as I said in an earlier thread is Obama's message for this week.

This is how you respond to these type of attacks, McCain has so many ads up that can be either debunked or totally dismissed that I tend to think it dilutes his message.

Anyway, good ad.

No hand-wringing here. Excellent ad all around. :)

Oh, you all have to vote on the TMZ link below, they are slamming McCain, too funny!

http://www.tmz.com/2008/07/30/mccain-as-hip-as-the-one-hes-inclined-to-break/

In his new song “Politics: Obama Is Here,” rapper and staunch Barack Obama supporter Ludacris trashes presumptive Republican presidential nominee John McCain and former Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Clinton.
“Hillary hated on you, so that bitch is irrelevant. … McCain don’t belong in any chair unless he’s paralyzed. Yeah I said it cause Bush is mentally handicapped,” Ludacris sings.

Thank goodness for Obamabots like Ludachris sticking to the message of "Hope" and "Change".
What a wonderful message to our Children.

Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton issued a statement, condemning Luda for his ridiculous lyrics.

In a group of statements that might come back to bite the presumptive Republican nominee in his wrinkled backside, criminal, close friend, and staunch John McCain supporter G Gordon Liddy once told Branch Davidians: "If the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms insists upon a firefight, give them a firefight. Just remember, they're wearing flak jackets and you're better off shooting for the head." Also, when talking about listening to Adolf Hitler on the radio he said: "It made me feel a strength inside I had never known before," he explains. "Hitler's sheer animal confidence and power of will [entranced me]. He sent an electric current through my body." This is a man who has given 5,000 to the McCain Campaign, and has held a fundraiser at his house for the Senator from Arizona. Thank goodness for McCainiacs like Liddy are sticking to the message of "Patriotism" and putting "Country First". What a wonderful message to our Children

PS. Despite all that, McCain went on Liddy's radio program last November and said: ""I'm proud of you, I'm proud of your family. Its always a pleasure for me to come on your program Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and [philosophies that make this country great." What in the fuck was that about Ludacris again?

Great post HC

You should send this to Obermann and especially Rachel Maddow...they are likely the only 2 who will bring this out to counter the bias and hate Obama is going to get about Ludacris.

Also you should send in it as a letter to editor to every single newspaper that writes about how horrible Ludacris is!!

Like someone would have sex with you.

user-pic

Don't feed the trolls.

user-pic

O - my guy Luda has a new track? O cool - thanks for letting me know.

I saw you mentioned him below and came looking.

See, you just think you're being obnoxious, Dem.

LOL!

Great. Dimbecilic is back. a) Ludacris isn't Obama. b) Ludacris isn't affiliated with Obama. c) Ludacris didn't get or seek approval for this before or after. d) The overwhelming majority of Obama's supporters aren't affiliated with Ludacris.

Oh, and e) Obama's campaign harshly criticized this thing hours ago, all of which taken together means,
f) You're a halfwit.

user-pic

But any prominent black person is responsible for what all black people think, say or do, don't you know that? It's not racist either, it's just... um... how things are. In the media. 'N' stuff.

This is the future of America ? This criminal filth "rapper" who is nothing but a glorified gang banger just released a "song" endorsing Obama. In this "song" the filthy Ludacris call Hillary a "bit*h" and bashes Bush and Mccain and says it's time to paint the White House "Black". Obama says he listens to the criminal filth "Ludacris" and appreciates his "art". Do you want a president that listens to glorified gang banging filth and calls it "art". Thank you Ludicris, your song is ludicris and you just ranked in some more votes for McCain. Whats funny is you Obamabots are promoting that this 'gang banger' supports Obama, absolutely hilarious. As if this is a GOOD thing for your empty suit. HA, I can't stop laughing.

"This criminal filth "rapper" who is nothing but a glorified gang banger just released a "song" endorsing Obama."

Criminal? Holy Hyperbole Batman! The rapper in question was the valedictorian of his high school, with no criminal record to speak of. See, clumsily sticking to racist talking points sinks already pathetic argument.

"In this "song" the filthy Ludacris call Hillary a "bit*h" and bashes Bush and Mccain and says it's time to paint the White House "Black". Obama says he listens to the criminal filth "Ludacris" and appreciates his "art"."

He also has a song addressing abuse and teen runaways, but don't let the facts fuck up an already inbred argument. That said, Johnny Cash had songs about killing people, John McCain wouldn't be negatively affected by being a fan of his. I wonder what the difference is? Hmmm

"Thank you Ludicris, your song is ludicris and you just ranked in some more votes for McCain."

The people shocked by this, you know, clumsy guilt-by-association by a person who was never affiliated with the campaign - are people who weren't going to vote for Obama anyways.

"HA, I can't stop laughing."

That because you've lost hope on substantive arguments a long time ago - its the only retorts you can muster nowadays. :)

user-pic

Mr Cash not only sang about murder he sang about killing his woman while using cocaine.

Early one mornin' while makin' the rounds
I took a shot of cocaine and I shot my woman down
I went right home and I went to bed
I stuck that lovin' 44 beneath my head

Here are some lyrics by Ludacris, who you think is a "criminal", from his song Runaway Love
addressing the pain of forgotten kids:

Runaway Love
Now little Lisa's only nine years old
She's trying to figure out why the world is so cold
Why she's all alone and ain't never met her family
Mama's always gone and she never met her daddy
Part of her is missing and nobody will listen
Mama's on drugs getting high up in the kitchen
Bringing home men at different hours of the night
Startin' with some laughs, usually ending in a fight
Sneakin' in her room while her mama's knocked out
Trying to have his way and little Lisa says 'ouch'
She tries to resist but then all he does is beat her
Tries to tell her mom but her mama don't believe her
Lisa is stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that hell is a place called home
Nothing else to do but get some clothes and pack
She says she's 'bout to run away and never come back

Runaway Love

Little Nicole is only ten years old
She's steady trying to figure why the world is so cold
Why she's not pretty and nobody seems to like her
Alcoholic stepdad always wanna strike her
Yells and abuses, leaves her with some bruises
Teachers ask questions she makin' up excuses
Bleeding on the inside, cryin' on the out
It's only one girl really knows what she about
Her name is little Stacey and they become friends
Promise that they always be tight 'till the end
Until one day little Stacey gets shot
A drive by bullet went stray up on her block
Now Nicole stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that Hell is a place called home
Nothing else to do but get her clothes and pack
She says she's 'bout to run away and never come back

Runaway love

Little Erica is eleven years old
She's steady trying to figure why the world is so cold
So she pops 'X' to get rid of all the pain
Plus she's having sex with a boy who's sixteen
Emotions run deep and she thinks she's in love
So there's no protection he's using no glove
Never thinking about the consequences of her actions
Living for today and not tomorrow's satisfaction
The days go by and her belly gets big
The father bails out - he ain't ready for a kid
Knowing her mama will blow it all outta proportion
Plus she lives poor so no money for abortion
Erica is stuck up in the world on her own
Forced to think that Hell is a place called home
Nothing else to do but get her clothes and pack
She say she's 'bout to run away and never come back

The remainder of the song offers a message of hope to such children.

Hardly a criminal or gangsta. Check it, your bias is showing.

JOAN RIVERS McCAIN.

Dem Bill C here is a message for you from yer Doc: "Take yer meds!" Wanker. The old reference is brilliant on one hand it highlights the tried BS of attack politics and at the same time highlights Mccain's age. Yet it cannot be pinpointed as an atatck on his age because it is easy for Obama's camapign and Obama to relate it to Rovain BS. It also works again when Republicans (assuming they will) complain about it as an age attack by raising that point in the voter's conciousness. All in all a simple, on message and scathing comeback.

user-pic

Damn, that was fast.

Maybe Bill Burton can apologize to Clinton supporters for not coming to her defense during the primaries and helping her battle a torrent of sexist media criticism? I guess he is to busy responding to "Luda" as you call him.

user-pic

What's up with Luda? What did I miss?

user-pic

You are so sweet. Thanks.

user-pic

I'm loving this - how stupid is Luda? This is how stupid he is: When he wound up Bill O'Lielly, he got a grammy.

This is why I love hip hop so much - I love how smart the artists are.

Not only that, but I think McCain totally screwed up by having Brittany and Paris in his latest ad, as TMZ is making a big deal out of it, and all the 20 somethings read this site and People's, which mentions it too. So McCain has tried to equate Obama with Spears and Hilton, which is getting huge attention. I read one Republican operative that used to work for McCain said McCain's celebrity ad is childish.

user-pic

Amelie, that's one reason I can't believe Greg is being told that this is a serious money buy ad - it's so LAME.

Unless you are about mmmmm 82.

Then it really hits home, I'm sure.

Of course the MSM wont give this near the airtime...

user-pic

It'll be paired with the McCain ad from now on. Olbermann will be all over this, of course. But the damage may be done.

It's getting covered.

Maybe Dem can take his meds, just maybe

user-pic

I love this campaign. I've loved it every goddamn step of the way so far.

This is not only the most effective way to attack McLame, it happens to be the truth - something McLame wouldn't realize nowadays if it crawled up his butt and bit him.

Tena: Mental image for a moment, YUK :)

user-pic

sorry.

It's a good ad for a # of reasons. Perhaps most importantly, it starts its own meme: McCain's campaign has lied, is lying, will lie.

That's a theme that the Obama campaign can return to again and again, as needed.

The concern is gone.

The Bush-McCain picture makes the ad.

The best is that it's preemptive against future ads.

Good ad- the litany of quotes are quite effective at the beginning. $1000 middle class tax cut- grabs the attention as well. Glad they came out so quickly. A classy counter to the baseless, negative, muck flowing out of the McCan't camp.

I'm still hoping McCain's record will get aired at some point. McCan't has a particularly horrible track record on veteran's issues. Maybe in the last month before the election?

I must say this week is shaping up how I'd imagined it would last week- McCan't floundering, going negative, and releasing attack ads. Obama pivoting and focusing on domestic issues.

I think the Obama camp has something up their sleeves for next week.

Like naming the VP nominee?

My favorite part: When McLame is pictured next to W. Infact, if I had to tweak and add one letter, I'd say- "Same Old W Politics."

But a nice one. Now play and replay it.

stupid server, apologies on the double post.

user-pic

Ludacris is an artist.

Artists say all kinds of things that regular people don't say - that is in a large part, their function in society -

Luda has nothing to do with Obama - thanks for the racism, though, that was implicit there - yes you can tell them apart if you try a little bit.

;)

Well damn, it's about time. Do you guys have any idea how many milliseconds its been since McCain started this trash? I only pray that it isn't coming too late for him to salvage the election.

Thank God there were blog commenters here to demand that Obama respond to McCain's ads RIGHT THIS MINUTE and even threaten not to contribute if he didn't heed their advice immediately. Why, I'll bet that if we hadn't gotten a mass TPM-EC Chicken Little Dance going over the last two days, Obama would have just let it all slide without any response whatsoever, just like Kerry did with the Swiftboaters in 2004.

Yes, whatever would his campaign would do without expert panic-tinged campaign advice from blog commenters?

user-pic

Heh.

user-pic

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah baby!

Anybody want to take odds on the Sunday shows covering Obama's use of code words to smack McCain about his age? "Same Old Politics"? I can just hear the magical song of the concern trolls now....

I think the black and white was far more effective in conveying his age than the use of the words "same old politics"

user-pic

That's what I was thinking. Its like watching an old B&W sitcom. You know there was something there once, but its time has come and gone.

I think his surrogates will be all indignant about snot-nosed Barack Obama calling the honorable John Sidney McCain a liar. The Obama surrogates should all carry today's Wapo's front page and NYTimes lead editorials where they concluded McCain's "Troops/photo-op" ad was blatantly false and an attempt to mislead. McCain's own blogger even walked back on the claim, of course I doubt they'll run ads admitting their mistake ( http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0708/McCain_campaign_backs_off_cameras_charge.html ).

Candid hop they do, its perfect

I don care if MSM gets in an uproar over age issue the more it is mentioned the more low info voters will hear it and it will sink in the Republican guy is dirt old

user-pic

Really. Let the Republicans complain. Its a valid response to accusations that Obama is "presumptuous".

Which is just an updated version of uppity.

If this response (as good as it is), simply responding to McCain's attacks becomes a pattern, I will be concerned.

McCain is out front, forcing his opponent to respond.

If Obama doesn't balance it out and go out front
against McCain, I don't care how good his response is/will be, he'll be in trouble.

527s not being in the vanguard, not having Obama's back may have been a bad decision.

Ah sorry, McCain is not forcing Obama to do anything. These McCain ads have been up for a short time, and Obama responded on his own time, not McCain's. If McCain was truly "forcing his opponent to respond" wouldn't the Obama campaign have had to be responding to these ads as they appeared.

Ludacris writes a song slamming Obama's political rivals and Obama has to respond to it - Imagine if he had to defend/denounce every 527 ad. Obama is all about message discipline, I think the netroots are his vanguard this election cycle.

user-pic

Remember, as of today we are still in JULY! It is very, very early for McCain to go so negative; the Republicans must be very concerned.

Obama's current strategy is two-fold. 1. promote a positive change agenda. 2. respond quickly to McCain's attacks.

This ad works so well because it does both; only in reverse order.

I imagine the Obama campaign will debate in the fall on whether or not to go negative against McCain. At this point not enough people are paying attention so when these people finally start their decision process the Obama camp probably wants them to see their candidate acting in a way that is different.

I think it is too early to launch attack ads against McCain but it isn't too early to have them produced and ready to go (and I suppose I should also add "and be fired up.")

McCain is a terrible candidate; an unsure of the facts inarticulate, angry, unprinicpled flip-flopper who is offering nothing new. It might not take negative ads from Obama for people to realize this.

1 People.com, and 3 of the 5 top TMZ.com headlines are about Obama, due to Hilton and Spears McCain ad. Thank you John McCain! They are calling McCain over "The Hills", too funny.

user-pic

Shit - I just replied to you on this subject upstream.

I am all over this thread in the wrong places at the wrong times.

ROFLMAO!

As I said, Amelie, I find it hard to believe that Greg was told this is a serious money buy ad. It's so very fucking LAME!!!!

unless you are in your 80s. Then I'm sure it rocks.

Pretty good ad, but what I really want to hear Obama say is something like this...

McCain is an honorable man who has served his country well and promised to run a decent campaign focused on the issues affecting all Americans. Yet by running a constant stream of baseless negative attacks against me, he is not only undermining his own words, but he is allowing his long standing principles to be sacrificed by the people managing his campaign. I hope that John McCain can take control of his campaign and bring it to a dignified level of discourse that is worthy of the principles he once held. It is a disappointment.

In other words...

Make McCain feel shame. Make him feel embarrassed. Make him feel weak and powerless. Make him angry.

Good stuff.

I would like to see this sort of statement, but for a very different reason.

First off, I believe it to be true. McCain has SERIOUSLY shifted his politics in the last two years, ostensibly to make himself more palatable to the neo-cons in power. I mean...a man who's made his chops by being pro-military and anti-torture voting to allow torture and against veterans benefits (multiple times)?! It's almost pod-people here.

Secondly, it would expose how the Rovian/neo-con branch of the GOP is attempting to retain control of the White House. Not expose to you and me, because we're engaged in the political scene. Rather, it would expose them to the average Joe-voter who doesn't understand the AG scandal, the FISA/Warrantless wiretapping issue or the concept of unitary executive privilege.

Policies and politics aside, Sen. McCain has had a long and distinguished career as a western-style hero. Gritty, determined and unwilling to compromise on his beliefs. I can respect that, even if I think he's wrong on issues. I think there should be some discussion regarding his mental ability to lead (he IS getting up in years and it IS starting to show), but the last few months has been so counter to the person of McCain that someone should expose the 'handlers' and 'consultants' for what they are.

In a sense O's a victim of his own success. McSame's attacking him because he's popular which is odd to say the least until you realize that as long as the election is framed around McSame's attacks, no matter how absurd the attacks are, McBush isn't the issue

This ad attempts to return Bush to his rightful place

user-pic

Nice insight.

user-pic

I agree with Greg's analysis, and I'll add: any time you get to associate McCain with the word "old" is an opportunity not to be missed.

Good ad. Gets right to the point: McCain is a liar, just like George W.

Wrapped it up with some positive rebuttal, though. I like the phrase "taking on Big Oil" as a counter to the "drill here" rant from the badguys.

I feel good about our ads. Plus McCain is getting some blowback in the MSM on his dishonesty about the wounded troop visit.

The old guy is a f-ing liar. It has to be said.

user-pic

It's a smart ad, but I would expect nothing less. The Obama campaign has been consistent throughout. They're doing a masterful job.

With respect to "McCain is getting some blowback in the MSM on his dishonesty about the wounded troop visit," Judy Woodruff on PBS' NewsHour tonight had Brooks Jackson from FactCheck.org and Dan Balz from WaPo to discuss McCain's ad. Jackson pointed out the discrete statements were true, but they combined to insinuate a false claim. They're playing this very carefully. Good that Obama gets his shot in and redirects to the real issues.

user-pic

Obama himself says that he did not visit the troops because he realized it would look bad politically to use the troops as props. This is so same old, same old: Obama did not care what the troops thouht about it -- he thought about how it would play politically.

He also claims that he had not realized this until informed by the DOD's position that he couldn't have campaign staff with him. Is Obama nuts or does he just think we are?

Is this what GOP trolls like yourself do; I mean, other than pounding off by the keyboard?

but thanks for asking!,/b>

It must be lonely being a McComplain troll.

user-pic

Ummmm....no.

The important point here is that the MSM has finaly given permission to question McCain's integrity and honor - the only things besides the surge he had to run on.

John McCain, same OLD politics. Oh, and by the way, he's losing it.

user-pic

yes, any time one can get the word old and McCain together on screen the main message has been sent.

McComplain should have left well enough alone. Here's their response:

Pointing out your opponent’s worldwide celebrity is not the ‘low road,’ and neither is pointing out that he opposes oil drilling and supports higher taxes.”

Weak sauce....

The McCain campaign is hoping to get the following email to go viral. It was forwarded to me by a friend and its authenticity should be investigated. Here's the email:
>>>
Hello everyone, As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass along that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his visit to 'The War Zone'. I wanted to share with you what happened.
He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram.
As the Soldiers were lined up to shake his hand, he blew them off and didn't say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General.
As he finished, the vehicles took him to the Clamshell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with Weights) so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for Their service.
So,really, he was just here to make a showing for the Americans back Home that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are Going to make an effort to come all the way over here, you would thank those who are providing the freedom for you.
I swear, we got more thanks from the NBA basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States. I just don't understand how anyone would want him to be our Commander-in-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those who provide the freedom for him and our great country.
If this is blunt and to the point, I am sorry, but I wanted you all to Know what kind of caliber of person he really is.
What you see in the news is all fake.
In service,
CPT Jeffrey S. Porter
Battle Captain
TF Wasatch
American Soldier

It has been investigated. Although it is from an actual Army officer, he has recanted it, presumably because its all lies and his superiors called him on the carpet for publishing lies... conduct unbecoming an officer. ANd not very smart if BO is his future Commander in Chief. I think this came out over the weekend.

Excellent - thanks for finding that.

user-pic

Unfortunately, this ad probably won't be amplified by the media the way McCain's ad was. McCain only had to run the ad in a few markets and the media did the rest of the work. Today's Chicago Tribune featured a front-page-below-the-fold story about McCain's ads equating Obama with airhead celebrities. The story about Rove's contempt of Congress was buried inside, as was a story about Ted Stevens and his recent troubles. I seriously doubt the Trib will have a front-page story about Obama's response to McCain's ad. The article did quote some former McCain advisors who thought the ad wouldn't help McCain.
It's an uphill climb for Obama, who has an entire TV network running against him, most of the Radio Ranters, as well as the other McCain-sympathetic media in print.

"BALONEY", and the the requisite picture of McCain with Bush. I am McLovin' it.

user-pic

Greg,

You call this "tough"? I don't think so. Yes, it is an adequate response and at least uses others to say that McCain's bullshit is "false". But "tough" it ain't.

It will take a whole lot more than this level of response to get Obama over the finish line in first place. They need to rip McCain a new one and now, not later. If they don't, Obama (and the nation and world) loses.

On top of their shit. They've already got these ads written before McCain's camp even cuts them. Now that's how you run a campaign. No wonder John Weaver got the fuck out of there.
