New McCain Ad: Barack Obama To Blame For Gas Crisis

This is interesting. The McCain campaign, which has long thought it holds an advantage on foreign policy issues, is shifting the focus to domestic concerns with a new ad blaming the gas crisis on Barack Obama...

The ad, which will run on national cable and in "key states" (no further details given), reflects the fact that the McCain campaign believes it has staked out an advantage on the gas-crisis issue. The Dem polling firm Democracy Corps recently concluded:

"McCain's message adding domestic oil production to a policy of alternative energy investment and conservation is favored over Obama's message that blames oil companies, calls for investments in alternative energy, and rejects limited offshore drilling."

It also suggests that McCain advisers want to move the discussion away from the combo of the Obama trip optics, Nouri al-Maliki's recent endorsement of Obama's withdrawal timetable, and the White House's talk of a withdrawal "horizon."

This is part of their long-term up-is-down, black-is-white strategy: Obama is more like Bush and now, just like Bush, he's to blame for high gas prices.

Yup, exactly according to plan.

http://strategy08.wordpress.com

The Obama campaign should respond by aggressively linking high gas prices to the Iraq fiasco and "bomb, bomb Iran".

user-pic

Obama and his surrogates need to hammer home that there are already these drilling leases that the industry is not using -- the subject of the "use it or lose it" bill the GOP just defeated. I doubt most voters are aware of that.

The Democratic response should be a picture of gas prices BEFORE the Iraq war invasion, people from the Bush administration talking about how invasion of Iraq would help lower gas prices, then a montage of gas prices rising with every single year of the Iraq war.

Then a voiceover from Barack Obama saying, "The Republicans are lying to the American people again. Their plan to lower gas prices won't bring a single drop of gas for ten years. That means Americans will suffer at the gas pump for ten more years.

My plan immediately addresses the pain that Americans feel at the gas pump by investing in renewable energies, and alternative fuels. This brings real relief to Americans, not just the mental relief that McCain talks about."

Was going to write a diary about this ad - mind if I paraphrase this from you Slink? (with all credit given)

Sure, go ahead.

You going to post it on Dkos? I was thinking about doing that.

user-pic

Yeah, was going to - want me to wait?

Nah, you go ahead.

user-pic

Done and done.

That's pretty good, but I'd add in the bit about ANWR only having enough oil for a single year's oil needs. I'm not sure how much oil is off-shore, however.

An Interior Department study says the U.S. continental shelf in the Gulf of Mexico contains 115 billion barrels of oil and 633 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That would be enough oil to satisfy U.S. demand, at current consumption levels, for 16 years and enough natural gas for 25 years, according to the Times.

Personally speaking, I think this will lose as many voters as win them. Most Americans are not for drilling as McCain is suggesting. And the 'who do you have to blame for higher gas prices' line is just too stupid to be taken seriously, everyone knows the Bush/Cheney love for oil companies.

There are ALOT of stupid people out there who believe that Democrats are responsible for the high gas prices.

But do they really believe it's Obama in particular to blame?

I mean, how can you believe that the guy is a four-year-old inexperienced upstart AND believe that he has masterminded energy policy for years?

I know, I know; they're good at cognitive dissonance.

In any case, the moment Amelie highlights gave me a good chuckle.

user-pic

Greg? Do you know where this ad is being shown?

I hope that isn't how the Democracy Corps framed the argument between Obama and McCain about the energy crisis. It isn't a fair characterization. McCain's description is full of positives ("adding" alternative energy, "conservation") while Obama's policy is described as "blaming oil companies" and "rejecting" offshore drilling. These types of terms introduce bias into the questioning, so I hope the questions were more balanced, without reading the actual article.

yes, mcCain is desperately trying to shift the debate away from foreign policy (his weakness) and on to domestic issues (his other weakness). give him a week and he'll desperately try to shift back.

I read that piece this morning, and wondered about this:

Yet polls suggest that Mr. Obama hasn’t cemented his advantage, while voters remain open to Mr. McCain’s arguments and experience. In particular, he has the chance to persuade them in the states he values most.

What polls is Harwood referring to? I've never seen anything that suggests that Obama isn't strongly favored over McCain on economic issues...

I'm just taking a guess, but last week I heard from various sources that there was a lot of movement amongst independents, bleeding from Obama. That could be what Harwood's talking about, especially as many self-identified indies are blue-collar white voters - a group leery, to say the least, of Obama.

They can't be freakin serious..... This is pathetic..... I'm just hoping America can break through it's genetic racial bias and vote for the black guy who is on the right side of the issues....
Sorry no deep analysis today just felt like saying how i really feel....

user-pic

This offshore drilling is a pander, plain and simple.

There are lots of places the oil companies can drill already that they are not drilling, even though we gave them huge tax cuts so they would increase their drilling.

Do you know what they chose to do with that money they got in tax breaks? They chose to buy back their own stock. That is right, you and I and all other tax payers are paying to increase the value of Exxon stock.

My friends, that's not change you can believe in.

user-pic

And not to belabor the point, but that piece by Harwood closes with this:

For that reason, as well as his superior familiarity, the Michigan pollster Ed Sarpolus places Mr. McCain in stronger position on the economy for now. “John McCain is a known quantity,” Mr. Sarpolus said. “Barack Obama has the right message for Michigan, but he doesn’t have the trust yet.”

Then why the heck is Obama so far ahead of McCain?

Obama needs to hit McCain on drilling and on Nuclear Energy with the NIMBY principle. Where does he want to build the nuclear plants and where does he want to bury all of the Nuclear waste and then where does he want to drill off the coast of? I'm sure he'll give the cop out answer "It will be up to the States..." but I think you could corner him with it to make your point.

the Dems also really have to hit him on his ridiculous gas tax holiday and really spell out how bad an idea it is and how little effect it would have on gas prices (if any), while draining all money from road and infrastructure repair and putting tens of thousands out of jobs.

user-pic

The Obama campaign shouldn't let this Ad go a day without a solid response. Permitting off shore drilling won't result in a single drop for 10 years. We need solutions that are far more timely. How about more efficient cars, hybrids and electrics. We can start right now. Why wait for the Republicans and big oil?

Exactly, "Why wait ten years when we can do it NOW with hybrid cars, alternative fuels, and renewable energy?"

user-pic

What about repeating T.Boone Pickens line that we can't drill our way out of this crisis?

user-pic

Well Pickens is right, but in the upside down world of the modern GOP when you are in a hole (drilling being the hole) you must keep digging if you want to get out.

Makes sense, no?

Uhh...seriously? Let's see, what is the single biggest contributor to the price of gas...instability in the Middle East...what policy has done the most to destabilize the Middle East...Iraq. Who supported it from the beginning, and continues to support that war? McCain. Who has always been against it? Obama.

Done.

user-pic

The hindsight stuff doesn't work when it comes to pocketbook issues, especially when people are hurting as much as they are today. Plus, they already know the Obama and the Dems want us out of Iraq pronto and want us to avoid any other similar mistakes - eg, attacking/invading Iran. They want solutions. McCain and the GOP are offering solutions that sound like they will deliver short-term relief. The Dems and Obama - correctly, I might add - argue that the only way we'll ever get relief is by reducing our reliance on oil, by investing in alternative energy sources, by regulating the oil industry more close, etc. But these are all long-term solutions with no defitive delivery date, if they get delivered at all. People have been hearing about the promise of wind-power, solar-power, etc. for years but their still paying $4.50 for a gallon of gas.

I think the Dems need to hammer home the "use it or lose it" message. And they need to present the documented facts and figures every day - the oil companies already own leases for tens of millions of acres and they aren't drilling on them...why not? Point out that the GOP members of the House just last week voted against forcing the oil companies to drill on those acres. I see too much effort being put into calling the GOP's policies a pander. Need to talk a lot more about what Big Oil already has that they aren't using. I don't think this is something of which most American voters are aware.

user-pic

Folks, there is WAY to much nuance within the case against the tax holiday and opening up the restricted areas for drilling for the average American voter to grasp. And they don't care that most of these price increases occurred while the GOP was running the WH and Congress. All they know is that a gallon of gas costs between $4-5 today and they want relief now, from anybody. Gas tax holiday? Sounds good if it means I'll pay less at the tank each time I visit the station. Open up more areas for drilling? More drilling = more supply = lower prices - sign me up for that as well.

The Dems have a big challenge here and I'm interested to see how they will handle it. I fear that this issue is the reason why we're seeing Obama starting to drop in the polls - not below McCain, who isn't gaining as a result, but more and more folks are moving to undecided, at least per both of the daily tracking polls.

user-pic

Obama & Co. need to do three things:

1. Hammer home the message that gas and oil prices have soared during Republican rule, and that GOP-friendly oil companies have cashed in big time.

2. State clearly and repeatedly that Barack and Democrats have economically viable plans to promote the use of new green technologies that will provide clean, efficient energy/

3. Hammer McCain's support of the Bush Administration's disastrous record on the environment. McCain claims to be green, but apart froma handful of votes, his record doesn't bear that out and he will be beholden to traditional GOP corporate interests.

user-pic

The people who will be most easily swayed by the GOP's panders on this issue will be the famous, "working class whites" whom - as the media tells us every day - Obama struggles to win over. As I noted above in response to another poster, item "1" is a hindsight argument. It can and should be used, but a "solution" needs to be presented as well.

As for #2 and #3, when times are tough financially, most of the "working class whites" don't give a rat's arse about environmental issues or green technology. It's a sad reality, but it's a reality we need to face.

user-pic

That is why we have to hammer home current pocketbook solutions. Interestingly those pocket book solutions are both green and immediately viable. They also put Americans to work. Hit hard on hybrids and electric vehicles and rebuilding our electric generation infrastructure.

Al Gore is dead on target. So is T. Boone Pickens when he says we can't drill our way out of this crisis.

user-pic

OK, that probably is a way to get the green message out there in this environment. Maybe something like this,

"Not only will an investment in alternative energy solutions provide us with a long-term solution for our oil and environmental problems, it will create new jobs and new opportunities TODAY."

"I'm to blame for high fuel prices? Gee, John, thanks, but I really do not have that much power." - Barack Obama

user-pic

You know, I just watched the ad and I can't believe just how ridiculous it is. From a theatrical point of view, it isn't bad. But while I think many American voters will have a tough time grasping the nuances of the drill/don't drill argument, they know there are a number of reasons why gas prices are high - and none of them include a first-term Senator from Illinois.

One guy is to blame. Come on!

And don't you just love the inclusion of the Nuremberg Rally-like Obama chants in the background? Look - the scary black Muslim cult leader is stealing your gas!

I agree. This is so absurd, that bemusement and ridicule is the only proper response.

It's difficult to fathom Obama camp's reluntance to respond or counter attack. This is second attack ad in two weeks- as CNN would like to call it a "contrast ad" whatever that means.

While these are thin and flimsy baseless attacks (both Iraq flip flop and gas hike attack), Obama camp does have obligation to counter attack- dispel the notions well-before they take any form or shape in the political dialogue.

Obama's camp hit back with this nugget from one of McCain's speeches:

"Let me give you a little bit of straight talk on energy. Our dangerous dependence on foreign oil has been thirty years in the making, and was caused by the failure of politicians in Washington to think long term about the future of the country."

Via Ben Smith.

WOW...

EVEN THE GAS PUMP IS OLD!!!!

And are we drilling in RIVERS now... yeah, that'll work.

Obama needs to run an ad showing Bush and Cheney as the oil men in the White House and point out that just because the oil companies drill off our shores it doesn't guarantee the oil will be sold to U.S. It only guarantees more money for oil companies. And then ask "Is it a coincidence we haven't advanced our energy technology during the Bush years?" We also need environmentalists running ads showing the marine life covered in oil on the Alaska shores.

user-pic

Here's a better idea Johnny boy. Let's get the hell out of Iraq and quit treating their country as our battle space so they can get on with the business of pumping their 115 billion barrels of oil out of the ground and into the int'l market.

That'll do a lot more to drive down gas prices than hunting all over the ocean off tourist beaches in Miami and Santa Barbara for years looking for the last dregs of our supply.

"Who can you thank for higher prices at the pump?"

Here's a better question: Who can make the most ridiculous charges and not get laughed off the political stage?

I'm hoping that the "Reality Check" teams and factcheck.org and WaPo's pinnochio-delaing Fact Checker will hav a field day with this one, but I'm not holding my breath.

This reeks of desperation. Wow.

McCain needs to talk with Karl Rove on how to run a negative campaign. His last campaign add had such good looking pictures of Obama smiling, if you had the sound turned down, you would have thought it was an Obama add!

This ad is laughable and utterly unconvincing.

The McCain campaign is asking you to believe that after all these years of rising oil prices with oil executives running the Whitehouse and war in the Middle East that suddenly the neophyte Senator from Illinois, that has no experience, and that nobody had even heard of until a couple of years ago... he's to blame?!?

Yeah, right.

Lets see: how long has McDementia been in the Senate? Nearly 30 years, right? Why is he now so concerned about our energy policy? Where was this urgrncy 5 yrs ago? Ten or even 20 years ago? Obama has only been in D.C. 21/2 yrs. I think if McDementia wants to know who to blame, he should take a look in the mirror. What is HIS record over the past 28 yrs?

According to Michael Scherer, who has turned into as bad an MSM pod person as Ana Marie Cox since he got his Time gig, this ad is really just part of a brilliant McCain team plot to convince people that Obama are strange, crazy, dangerous, otherish cultists.

Michael, of course, does not report that, if that's what they're really doing, this would be about the twentieth retread of a dismally unsuccessful Hillary strategy that McCain's brain trust has tried.

McCain has evidently lost touch with reality. Where has he been for the last eight years as the rest of us Americans have watched gas prices continue to soar with no end in sight? McCain with all his so called experience and this is what he and his advisors comes up with. WOW.
