McCain Jokes About Obama's Overseas Trip And Press Coverage
The McCain campaign couldn't help but get in a joke about Barack Obama's overseas trip, with the candidate delivering a joke that encompassed two separate narratives: That Obama is being ridiculous by traveling all over the world, and the press loves him.
"My opponent, of course, is traveling in Europe, and tomorrow his tour takes him to France," McCain said according to the prepared remarks for tonight's LIVESTRONG town hall meeting with Lance Armstrong in Ohio, set up by Armstrong to talk about health care and cancer issues. "In a scene Lance would recognize, a throng of adoring fans awaits Senator Obama in Paris -- and that's just the American press."

I find this continuance by McCain to say Obama's getting preferential treatment by the media to be absolutely ridiculous. If the media hadn't been in love with McCain, he wouldn't be the Republican Nominee for President.

McCain's campaign is basically Hillary 2.0 with a side of judgement-clouding partisan animosity. I know he was busy during much of the Dem primary, but it seems like he would've had someone taking note of the things that Obama's opponents tried to little effect. Many of the tactics Team McCain is trying have already been proven ineffective. Sure, sometimes repetition works, but sometimes selling something that the public has already decided they want no part of just leaves you with a product that is a proven loser.
John McCain = A proven loser with his own green screen!

Figures; McCain goes to Canada, Columbia, London, etc. and that's okay. Obama goes to Berlin and because he got more press coverage (200,000 people did not show up to see McCain)McCain is unhappy. Maybe if he would quit making so many gaffes and start making some sense he might generate more interest. He can start, since he is at a LiveStrong event, by explaining why his health care program plans on taxing employee health benefits?

Yeah, I was incredulous when I read that, too--like he was going to start listing policy positions in a speech before 200,000 people!!! Honestly, you just can't please some people, if he had done the professorial thing he would have been accused of being an "elitist academic" or something, not to mention putting the crowd to sleep. And did you notice that they slipped in the detail that the flags were "supplied by the campaign"?
The speech was inspiring and please, McCain is a big, fat liar if he denies that he would take a rocket ship to any country in the world that could guarantee him one quarter the size of that audience!!

I believe what you are calling a smirk is where his teleprompter is telling him to "SMILE"--that's so we, and he, know that he told us a joke, and also to dispel that nasty rumor going around about his bad temper. Haven't you noticed that little pause between the "humorous" line and the weird, death's head lip-stretch he does?? I figure it takes his aging brain that long to process the "SMILE" instruction (one of these days he will just read it out loud).

From Bob Cesca:
And today, the word of the day in the corporate press is... presumptuous. Used in a sentence: Senator Obama is being presumptuous during his trip -- acting all presidential and dignified. How dare he be presidential while running for, you know, president. Presumptuous. During the live CNN web feed of the Berlin address, an anchor used it to describe the event. Joe Klein used it in a blog post today. Of course Joe attributed it to racist voters rather than very serious reporters -- racist because it's presumably a synonym for 'uppity' and we can't accuse the press of such awfulness. And Candy Crowley used it in her post-address analysis on CNN. That's a lot of coincidences. "Presumptuous" must really be a popular word. Odd that it's being used so often by people who want Senator Obama to win.
AP: "In a speech that risked being seen as presumptuous..."
TIME Magazine: "capable to become the Commander in Chief of a superpower -- without seeming presumptuous..."
The National Journal: "He is well aware voters here at home might see that as presumptuous..."
Washington Post: "Whether by the end of this week he will be seen as presumptuous or overly cocky..."
Chicago Tribune: "That means walking the fine line between looking presidential and appearing arrogant and presumptuous..."
Boston Globe: "plus the growing sense in some quarters that the presumptive Democratic nominee is getting a little presumptuous..."
Can you feel the wanting-Obama-to-win love radiating off your computer screen? No?

All I can say is the MSM should watch what they wish for--do they actually want to have Cindy McCain diss them for the next 4-8 years, because she will if her husband wins. Did anyone see the attitude she took about releasing her tax returns? I mean, honestly, do they really want to cover the McCains and Romneys or whoever come November?? Wouldn't it be a lot more fun to watch little Sasha and Malia?
And BTW, that was also my impression of Armstrong, that he's not endorsing McCain, just standing next to him because he was there. And let's face it, getting a mole removed doesn't compare to losing a nut.

While I believe there is bias in the MSM for McCain, I also think the MSM to some degree play to their audience. For example the network news is watched mostly by elderly people who are probably McCain supporters. But the age group that advertisers really want to reach is the 28-50 age group, because elderly people don't buy. Progressives need to use our power in the MSM by becoming a force on at least one channel, such as NBC. Rather than cancelling subscriptions to the major papers and magazines, we need to buy subscriptions. As long as Republicans control their profits, they will give them what they want.

Can we all just agree that there is alot that's funny about this Obama overseas spectacle?
I mean come on, the man looks the opposite of presidential. He looks like a man trying to be a cool GQ model with his sunglasses, rolled up shirt-sleeves, and jacket slung casually over his shoulder. The only thing missing was a diamond stud in one ear.
He descends the stairs of his newly painted plane (sans American flag) onto his campaign provided red carpet while chewing gum like good manners do not apply to him. (It was nice to see that he's learned that shaking hands is probably more 'presidential' than 'fist bumping' though so a point for that.)
This is all in his first minute on his overseas tour. The sad thing is he can pimp-walk all over the world doing meet and greets and giving speeches but it won't make him ready to be president.

July 25, 2008 10:15 AM | Reply | Permalink
SFC Wallace,
There are substantive criticisms of Obama, then there are slanderous associations.
First, Lori explicitly references Obama's clothing. Noting how it's hip and cool, and that he chews on gum (probably nicorette). She offhandedly comments about a "diamond stud in one ear". Read: Bling.
She then questions his patriotism because his plane doesn't have an American flag slathered over it--apparently donning a flag pin on his lapel to appease these concern trolls no longer cuts the mustard. She proceeds to condescendingly imply that Obama has now learned proper etiquette and has forsworn the "fist bump" for a handshake. All kinds of racist code here, SFC Wallace, if your attuned to that sort of thing.
She then makes the mistake of making explicit, what was only implied, she claims he's pimp-walking all over the world.
Now, I wasn't born yesterday. I live in a racist area and know the code. What Lori was propagating, either consciously or not, is a form of racist litany about her discomfort with a black, (in her thinking) cocky candidate. She's trying to frame her concerns as inexperience, but it's clearly racist sentiment that under girds her fears.
My grandmother is a great example of this. She's a staunch democrat who won't vote for Obama. She says he's a secret muslim. After arguing with her and showing her the facts, she lets out the truth: I won't vote for him because he will favor the "blacks over the whites". It's difficult to admit these sorts of things, so they are shrouded in other seemingly socially acceptable frames.
July 25, 2008 10:42 AM | Reply | Permalink
...that's what "you" assign to her as code. There are a lot of white, pimp-walking, diomondstud wearing, cocky guys I wouldn't want to be president either. Not everything is secret code for racism. The left is race obssessed, looking around every corner for some racist clue or code word. I don't like the guy cuz he's a closet socialist (which is also the same reason Europe loves him). It has nothing to do with skin color. I think Justice Thomas is the bomb! I'd love to see Condi Rice or J.C.Watts on the ticket. I voted for Alan Keys when he ran against Obama (I was stationed in Southern Illinois at the time). I agree that Obama is a cocky, smooth talking, empyt suit, and if he wasn't running against "Bob Dole without the personality" he be getting creamed...nothing racial about it.

Chris's response wasn't to you, though. It was to the first post in that part of the thread.
No one's saying you're racist. But LoriInMo certainly is, and she's going to get called on it. If you keep defending her, you run the risk of being collateral damage.
BTW, saying you voted for Keyes is hardly an argument you should use, as both candidates were black.

SFC Wallace,
We will have to agree to disagree. I have friends and relatives who are racist, and I'm well aware of the language used to convey it. You can give her the benefit of the doubt, and I would too if she hadn't made three thematically related, racially-tinged arguments. And, by the way, you need not over compensate on your rejoinder about how open minded you are. The fact that you would vote for Alan Keyes is quite revealing. Are you a Christian Reconstructionist too? I've not seen anything in your comments, however, to suggest you are racist.
I find it interesting that you have completely drunk the republican kool-aid regarding Obama. What evidence do you have that he's a closet socialist? Obama is a free-market guy, in fact, I would prefer that he were socialist. This country could use more socialism. But I digress.

Here's an interesting link from Drudge Report that shows journalists' campaign donations as proof of their bias to the Democrats.
http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=301702713742569
What's really strange about their numbers is that journalists at FoxNews have only donated to the Democrats, and have given $0 to Republicans. I guess they were among the Republicans donating to Clinton to help keep the primary going until June.
Speaking of FoxNews, has Lanny Davis become a Republican? He's talking more like one every day.

...I think it proves that Democrats (or supporters) out number Republicans in the media (way above the national averages). Does that mean they intentionally slant coverage? No. Does it mean that what they consider important and newsworthy comes from the perspective of a Democrat or supporter? Yes 10, 15 or sometimes 20 to 1. As discussed earlier, for a few really dim and bigoted people, this will continue to work and even harden their jackass feelings. What Obama did in Germany was nothing short of remarkable. Germany has not been a country well know for racial harmony in recent years and to see people of all colors, coming out in the hundreds of thousands, to hear an African American candidate from the US give a speech,...the accomplishment cannot be understated, despite haters like David Brooks and the NY Times. Can you imagine how they would have gone after him if he was specific on policy pronouncements overseas? And the juxtaposition of John McCain in a German restaurant, without a minority in site. But, let's not make this a racial issue (even though the elements are there), what it's really about is smart and dumb. And I'm not talking about the candidates. This country was dumb to vote for George W. Bush and I would hope enough good people are smart enough this time to vote for the candidate that will actually do something to improve the people's plight and advance our place in the world. In my humble opinion, you're not going to get that from John McCain, Bob Barr, Ralph Nader, or Cynthia McKiney.
