McCain Campaign Distances Itself From Gramm's "Nation Of Whiners" Comment
The McCain campaign is distancing itself from national campaign co-chair and top economic adviser Phil Gramm's claim that we're in a "mental recession" and are a "nation of whiners." The campaign has just sent us this:
"Phil Gramm's comments are not representative of John McCain's views. John McCain travels the country every day talking to Americans who are hurting, feeling pain at the pump and worrying about how they'll pay their mortgage. That's why he has a realistic plan to deliver immediate relief at the gas pump, grow our economy and put Americans back to work."
In a sign that the McCain campaign is worried about having to own Gramm's comments, a McCain campaign official tells me that McCain himself will address Gramm's comments to reporters on his plane today.
Late Update: The Obama campaign tries to wrap Gramm's comments around McCain's neck, blasting out this from spokesperson Bill Burton:
"One of Senator McCain's top economic advisors may think that when people are struggling with lost jobs, stagnant wages, and the rising costs of everything from gas to groceries, it's merely a 'mental recession'. And Senator McCain may think it's sufficient to offer energy proposals that he admits will have mainly 'psychological' benefits. But the American people know that our economic problems aren't just in their heads. They don't need psychological relief - they need real relief - and that's what Barack Obama will provide as President."

But then, maybe I'm just a whiny American.

Good old Phil--still an idiot after all these years. And yet the Republicans are going to try to pin the elitist tag on Obama when they're the ones who are clearly out of touch.

Why is McCain even bothering to respond to this? It's not like any news outlet has or will pick it up.

I know. I flipping through the cables now, and I literally cannot find a mention. Andrea Mitchell had one 3 minute discussion, otherwise it's all Jackson all the time. Can anyone even conceive of the hit Obama would take if what's-his-name Goolsbee or Furman had said such a thing. And they are not even well-known like Gramm!
I'm sure it'll be on the networks tonight, though, so that'll help.

AP spin yet to come:
John McCain is demonstrating his patience and toughness as he at once distances himself from Gramm's comments and carefully schools his economic advisor on the pain working class Americans feel. This demonstrates, once again, McCain's true blue, grandfatherly ways and underscores his deep, unending empathy with real Americans. God bless John McCain. What a fine demonstration of leadership.

McCain keeps talking up his gas tax pander. What has he actually done to accomplish it.
Does anyone know if he has even drafted the legislation and offered it up, in the Senate.
After all, he is talking about just a reduction for the summer months, and they will soon be gone.
Where does it stand. If he has not done the
the work required to get it voted on, then shouldn't the media challenge him on that point every time he mentions his gas tax pander bear.

I don't mean to whine -- I really don't -- but yesterday I learned that my retirement account has lost 10% of its value in the last six months. I didn't just imagine this economic insecurity, Sen. Gramm, and I lay the responsibility for it at your party's feet... of clay.

It's probably past time for the media to provide some background on Gramm to voters.
Voters should probably find out Gramm's central role in the very economic troubles they are "whining" about. That might be instructive.
Maybe the happy reporters on the Straight Talk Express could offer some insight.
Once they finish their donuts.

"nation of whiners" is good, but "social security is a disgrace" is better since it came from the candidate's mouth.
how about "george w. bush tried to dismantle social security; john mcCain says social security is a disgrace." etc. you could also throw in the GOP's historical hostility to SS. mcSame's response would probably be "i knew FDR; you're no FDR!"

Anyone under 40 should pay attention. Unless funding sources or criteria change there will not be enough young people to continue with the SS system as it is designed without a steep increase in the SS tax rate. Ask a 30 year old how they feel about having their rate doubled. Disgrace might be one of the more polite words you'd hear.

He was smart to include the word "just" in there. Fact is, a lot of our economic status is psychological. When people feel confident they spend more. Economic stimulus is what gets us out of recessions. But Gramm's way of stating it was clumsy and condescending. But he's preaching to the choir. Most Republicnas think Democrats are a bunch of immature whiners. And on the far progressive side there does seem to be alot of that.

He is the architect of the mess we are in because of the deregulation bills he pushed in congress. I am sure he is comfortable with the millions hes made from his lobbying firm.

Without any doubt if an Obama surrogate had said anything remotely like this the MSM would be up in arms and blast the airwaves for days on end with endless banter and faux analysis about meaning. But, of course, for McCain we shouldn't expect such thing to happen from the MSM. McCain really is way past his prime and out of touch. The only thing he has are his military and national security credentials. Well, if Iraq is going so well, then why do we even need those? We need a completely serious and intelligent man to run this country, and that's Obama. I don't want to have a beer with the Prez or laugh at a crude joke he made, I want him to run the country and make sure my life is safe and secure, and that will require a serious intellect. The GOP failed with Bush and they don't deserve to keep the WH with McCain.

Perhaps Phil Gramm was referring to a personal "mental recession" he experienced when he characterized us as a "nation of whiners."
What vivid imagery there is in McCain responding to Gramm's comments while aboard his plane. Here is the news report I visualize:
John McCain, with his head in the clouds, addressed Gramm's comments. Staring out of the window at the Americans beneath him, the Senator said, "I am with my fellow Americans in feeling economic pains. Have you seen the credit card debt accumulated by me and my wife? How about the property taxes that we owe on our place in California?"
Gazing down below, literally out of toucb with the country, McCain fielded some questions about his economic plans. Unfortunately, the session had to be cut short, as the plane was experiencing some turbulence. As everyone was rushing back to their seats, McCain was heard saying, "This bumpiness is making my stomach do flip flops."
