McCain Camp Rolls Out Brutal New Attack Ad On Foreign Policy
The McCain campaign has just unleashed a brutally negative new TV ad on national cable and key battleground states, accusing Barack Obama of shifting his positions and failing to support the troops:
"He hasn't been to Iraq in years. He voted against funding our troops," the announcer says. "Positions that helped him win his nomination. Now Obama is changing to help himself become president."
"John McCain has always supported our troops and the surge that's working. McCain. Country first."
Late Update: The Obama campaign has responded to the ad.

As will no doubt be pointed out many times McCain's recent record on veterans sucks donkey dick.
He didn't support the GI health benefits nor the GI college program.
Of course, if you are Republican, "Support our Troops," means, "Hide behind our troops for political cover while simultaneously screwing our troops over. Oh, and bumper stickers and lapel pins are the ulitmate sign of patriotness."

Forgot about that for a second. Definitely should hit him on the GI Bill....

Why stop at the GI Bill?
Listen, some of our troops are on their 4th or 5th tour of duty. The divorce rate and suicide rate amongst our enlisted is a fucking travesty, and McCain is the one that wants to stay. If he really supported our troops McCain would be hell bent on getting a draft going, that way we wouldn't be putting our soldiers out in the field for so many rotations with so little down time.
Support our troops my fat white pimpled hairy ass!

True. Here's another one that he voted against:

That is what I was talking about.
Obama really could take the "support our troops" mythology away from the Republicans if he wanted to, but he would have to be very careful. I could see the potential for a backfire.
I think the first thing that Obama needs to do is define exactly what, "Support our troops," means. Once that is done he needs to, carefully, draw contrasts.

I don't think he has to be too careful. This is about WORDS and DEEDS. McCain always mouths the right words, but his deeds give away his contempt for the military.

You aren't worried about the, "Are you questioning Senator McCain's patriotism," thing? Because they pull that as often as Bush pulled terror alerts during the 2004 election. In other words they do it all the time.
Which reminds me, is there anyone, besides me, who is hopeing Tom Ridge gets McCain's VP nod? I saw an excellent graff of the 2003 Bush polls that proved everyime Bush's approval numbers dipped another terror alert was issued.

Besides, I'd just lie ther and sweat, then I'd fall asleep and he'd fall in love. Been there, done that (only not with Yoda's grandfather.)

Ouch. Total crap, of course, but highly effective. Obama's camp has to respond very quickly, can't coast through the summer being painted as an anti-troop neophyte. C'mon Barack, show us what you got!

Seems to me this line here should be the jumping off point of Obama's response:
First thing that comes to mind is McCain's statement that he wouldn't support his own immigration bill now.

I said this before. "He hasn't been to Iraq in years" is going to make the McCain campaign sound really out of touch by Monday. So just how long do they think they're going to run this?
July 18, 2008 3:48 PM | Reply | Permalink
Perhaps, but it still is effective at making it sound like he's visiting for political purposes. Don't get me wrong, it's garbage, but it's pretty strong stuff.

I think the McSame campaign pushed this out very hastily, if we can trust McCain (jackass) who leaked that Obama will be landing in Iraq probably tomorrow or Sunday.
Obama is very vulnerable to political attacks in the coming week, because (a) every second of his foreign trip will be parsed for "gaffes" and (b) he can't directly respond to the outragous attacks that will come from McCain.
So he will need strong surrogates who can try to influence the coverage in the US to his favor. His campaign advisers must be on their A-game or this could possibly backfire, atleast in the media narrative.

Well when you hear McCain say that it is a "safety word." It is how McCain lets his handlers know he has, once again, made poo poo in his depends.
When you hear a McCain surrogate/handler say it it is his surrogate/handlers way of saying, "Hell no, I aint changin that thing again, somebody get Cindy... What do you mean she passed out after sucking down two bottles of Oxycontin? Okay, fine, I'll clean up the old bastards poop chute, but so help me god this is the last time."

That's the thing you see, it doesn't matter if he did or not. They will SAY he did! And they will say it 50 billion times and the corporate stenography corps will report that McCain and the Republicans are saying it but they will religiously fail to point out to the public it is a lie.
This has been going on for 40 years now. Our only hope is if the Obama people are over basking in their own genius and start ripping McCain a new asshole for lying and being warmonger and an all around idiot. If they don't, Obama might win but probably not. If they do, there could be a very happy Tuesday in November for millions at home and abroad.
Italways amazes me that people want to argue the facts when they clearly don't matter. This is a fight: it's not a debate. It's dog eat dog. It won't be long before we find out if Obama gets it or not or at least if his people do. If they allow this bullshit to go on until after labor day, as Kerry did, Obama will never be elected.

It's certainly no surprise that the McCain camp will produce despicable mangles for the length of the campaign. He's desperate, what else would he do?
Oh, maybe jeopardize Obama's life (as well as a contingent of other Senators) by revealing when they will be landing in Iraq. There's strategic thinking for you...

I think Obama is smart by talking IRAQ and Foreign policy NOW, by the time Oct rolls around, Americans will be so UPSET over the economy and lack of jobs they'll tell McCain politely to "shut up" about war -- we're HURTING HERE JOHN MCCAIN!! What are YOU going to do about it?
As John Kerry's PUSH of his military back fired on him, so shall McCain's.
Americans will see through the crap this time. They are tired of hearing what kind of HERO somebody was over almost 40 years ago -- they are more worried about TODAY.

Ads happen. Don't focus on it too hard.
Focus instead on the fact that the McCain campaign has made Obama's travel plans to Iraq very, very public. That means some bad guys are going to have advance notice of when Barack is probably going to be in Iraq. That is a very, very bad mistake no experienced Presidential candidate with a military background would make unless he is trying to get Obama killed. Any bets as to McCain's motivations?

Hopefully the media will wake up (or have someone slap them upside the head) and it will be revealed as the security fuck-up it really is -- from someone who claims "I know how to win wars, so just trust me."

It's okay. Unknown to the McCain campaign, it turns out Obama's people have access to mysterious devices or something that they call "telephones" and "the Internet." Evidently, these things will enable Obama and his team to see this ad and make decisions even while they are travelling.

I do think the Obama camp needs to hit back at this sort of thing fast and the best would be as others have said to cite the instances where Obama supported the troops and McCain did not. What is more I think it is important to frame the idea of bringing home the troops from Bush's unnecessary war as a way to "support the troops".
July 18, 2008 5:07 PM | Reply | Permalink
This is how the response ad needs to go:
1) "John McCain thinks he can mislead you with dishonorable attacks while Barack Obama is meeting with America's allies."
2) "What John McCain isn't telling you is that he has repeatedly voted against funding for our troops and veterans, including the new GI Bill."
3) "And while Obama was attending full committee hearings the war in Afghanistan, John McCain skipped every single one of his hearings to campaign for president."
4) "Here is the truth. Barack Obama has a plan to work together with our commanders on the ground to get our troops home by 2010. Barack Obama has led on Afghanistan, recommending an increase in troops there to fight the real threat: Al Qaeda."
5) "John McCain will do nothing but continue the policies of George W. Bush. Is it any wonder why he refuses to tell it straight?"

I know I'm late arriving, as usual.
But I gotta say, that was supposed to be a "negative" ad? Has everyone already forgotten Hillary's 3 AM Phone Call ad (aka the Red Phone ad)? That was far more frightening and menacing, with the music track and the threatening voice. This thing is narrated by a young-sounding pointy-head, the music track for the first half sounds like a cereal commercial (or an anti-depressant ad). The only remotely menacing or "serious" sounding segment is the last ten seconds when you get to the flag background with the ringing bell. (Admiral, anyone?)
I bet nobody will take it seriously. The "pinocchio" factor is also off the charts.

Is our agenda war? Well, I'm not voting for that! If it's not, tell Americans what it is. What is it?

Look how well going against himself on FISA protected Obama from this attack in his patriotism and his "toughness" on terror!
Gee, I'm really, really glad he screwed the whole nation over FISA now, aren't you? This way he will blunt Republican criticism of him for being weak. Uh huh. Right.
And this, folks, is only the first salvo of smears and innuendos. The Republicans are going to screw Obama to the wall not just as not being tough and being against the troops, but as a two-faced liar who no matter what he says is not really for American aims in the world and certainly not for our troops. And the bow they will tie it all up with is going to be his insincere, appeasing FISA vote. Oy!

BERLIN, July 19 (Reuters) - Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki told a German magazine he supported prospective U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's proposal that U.S. troops should leave Iraq within 16 months.
In an interview with Der Spiegel released on Saturday, Maliki said he wanted U.S. troops to withdraw from Iraq as soon as possible.
"U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes."

So far John McCain is doing everything in this campaign he said he wouldn't do. Going back on his word has become the hallmark of his campaign. Each time he does something like this it eats away at the "mavrick" image he has tried so hard to put together. Last year McCain voted with Bush 100% of the time -- that is, when he even bothered to vote. Some maverick that is!
