McCain Again Refers To Czechoslovakia, A Non-Existent Country

At his press avail today, John McCain referenced current relations between Russia and, um, a non-existent country.

From a transcript...

"I was concerned about a couple of steps that the Russian government took in the last several days. One was reducing the energy supplies to Czechoslovakia. Apparently that is in reaction to the Czech's agreement with us concerning missile defense, and again some of the Russian now announcement they are now retargeting new targets, something they abandoned at the end of the Cold War, is also a concern."

Czechoslovakia, of course, hasn't existed in over 15 years. Not the hugest deal, of course, but McCain keeps making this mistake.

Around three months ago, McCain told Don Imus that he would "work closely with Czechoslovakia and Poland and other countries" to install the European Missile Defense System in Poland, according to the Democratic National Committee. (The slip-up was referenced elsewhere, too.)

And during a GOP debate in October 2007, McCain said: "The first thing I would do is make sure that we have a missile defense system in place in Czechoslovakia and Poland, and I don't care what his objections are to it."

We're nitpicking a bit here. But McCain is running on his supposed foreign policy superiority. And the GOP and McCain would hit Obama as a foreign policy greenhorn based on less than this.

Mcfuddle is such a clear brillant thinker....

vote for a whiner..vote mcfuddle!

user-pic

Now that is hilarious, but frightening at the same time. I really think mcbush has lost it. Next thing you know he will be referring to the Soviet Union and doing a speech that the wall should come down. Pathetic.

user-pic

We're nitpicking a bit here.

Oh, nonsense. If Obama or any other Democratic candidate for president repeatedly made the same mistake, we'd be inundated in coverage about it.

These McCainisms are getting creepy. Why won't other media outlets make an issue of them?

user-pic

Creepy is an understatement. It's starting to scare the sh*t out of me. I really think that he has lost it. Do we really want this buffoon in charge of the country? If it winds up being a republican, by some fluke, I'd rather have mitt the flip than mcbush. This is getting really, really frightening.

Yep, Obama must be PERFECT or else be savaged by the "fair and balanced" press corp. Amazingly, Obama has misstepped relatively little. But it is astounding how high the bar is set.

McCain just has to not drool on himself or grunt too much to be considered Super Experienced Foreign Policy Master. The foul mouthed little creep makes jokes about how to kill Iranian civilians and gets a big ole pass.

user-pic

Two possible reactions from the media:

1) Oh that's charming, makes you want to have a beer with him, he's a regular guy

or

2) Look, it sure seems like he's wrong about that country existing, but since none of us spent 5 years in a POW camp, who are we to question?

The media almost always only reacts to the things that the opposing candidates bring up.

Obama is not going to touch this, and therefore the media will not either. If Obama were to make it an issue, the media would pick it up.

However then the question becomes, do they make the story:

1) Does McCain have a clue?

or

2) Is Obama being unfairly ageist?

Obama desperately needs to start pointing these things out or the media will never ever touch on them.

user-pic

I bet the Czechs don't appreciate it! Not to mention the Slovaks.

Czechoslovakia, Czech Republic; Shi'ites, Sunnis. i guess McCain's inability to understand basic principles of geography and religion are what give him such strong Republican national security cred.

I guess McCain's still in a 1993 frame of mind.

user-pic

Would that make it a pre-9/11 mindset?

hahaha, yes.

Nice!

I have said it over and over, and some here have expressed that I was being too harsh, but I am convinced he has some dementia. Not to belittle the man, but this is a BIG concern that seems to be ignored. Again, scientific fact, 86% of people his age show some signs of dementia. It will happen to the best of us, but it should not be noted in a man running for President. People keep saying it is a gaffe, but if you are around patients with dementia you easily pick up the signs. I think we needed FULL disclosure of his medical records, and also his mental capabilities.

user-pic

I'm starting to think that maybe you are right. Each of these McCainisms (Putin, the President of Germany, Czechoslovakia, the Sunni vs Shite, "I never said I wasn't smart on the economy", the painfully confused look when asked about insurance companies covering Viagra but not birth control) by itself is probably not a big deal. The problem is that they're part of a growing family.

And that should scare people.

Not so much a nitpick seeing that McCain made a huge deal about Obama camp's spelling of the word "flak" ("flack").

Basic geography doesn't seem too much to ask of someone who wants to be president.

user-pic

Having had both "flack" and "flak" thrown in my direction...there is a difference.

user-pic

True, but I can handle that type of spelling error. The mcbush screw ups aren't spelling errors, they are major problems and show a person out of touch with reality. The sunni/shia gaffe was huge, especially with mcbush's claim to fame being on top of the iraq situation. He obviously isn't. Czechoslovakia doesn't exist! If that isn't a huge problem, I don't know what is.

Cut the bullshit. Both spelling are accepted as being correct.

A flak jacket or flak vest (or flack jacket)[1] is a form of protective clothing designed to provide protection from shrapnel and other indirect low velocity projectiles. Today it frequently refers to bulletproof vests, particularly Type III and above which have added steel, titanium, ceramic or polyethylene plates which can withstand high-powered rounds such as from rifles.

It is almost like hearing Montgomery Burns hold forth on world events.

Yes, I'd like to send this letter to the Prussian consulate in Siam by aeromail. Am I too late for the 4:30 autogyro?

"And Smithers,", McCain said to Lieberman, "don't forget to polish the knobs on my undercarriage!"

user-pic

Is it stupidity or is it old age? Only his wife knows for sure.

I don't think it's nitpicking when it's one of many examples of his blunders on foreign policy. Can't we just have a President who's SMART?

At least he didn't say 'The Soviet Union' . . .

That would have been great. It seems like it has to be coming any day now. I tried to search to see if he has already done this, but I couldn't find anything in the little bit of searching I did... Oh well...

I don't think this is nitpicking at all.

"The metric system is the tool of the devil! My car gets 40 rods to the hogshead and that's the way I likes it."

McCain knows the difference. He is still just distorting the facts to fool the Vietnamese, just like he undermined their efforts to defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers.

How many voters know Czechoslovakia no longer exists? Obama points this out and he's just being elitist and condescending.

user-pic

...as long as he remains clean cut and well spoken about it...

Honest question. Do you have any concerns about McCain having dementia?

Despite Americans' poor geography skills, it is the job of the media to point out such errors. While some (or even "many") voters may not know the difference between "Czechoslovakia" and the current entities of The Czech Republic and Slovakia, any legitimate candidate for President must.

Had McCain made this slip-up once, it should be written off as a "gaffe." But multiple repetitions of the error do give cause for concern. It's like this: Obama can say "57 states" once and we know that he doesn't really think there are 57 states. He made a slip; any of us might do so. If he repeatedly referred to the "57 states" of America, we should be alarmed. Similarly with "Shi'ite/Sunni," "Czechoslovakia," and other repeated McCain "gaffes."

user-pic

I just read the transcript. What do you suppose McCain meant at the end:

So I'll be looking forward to hearing what he has to say when he returns and I hope that, I hope that he will have learned that we will withdraw and we will withdraw with honor and we are succeeding so that we will be able to withdraw.”

John McCain hopes that Obama will have learned that we will withdraw? Hmmmm. Isn't Obama arguing already that we should withdraw?

Isn't this the sort of misspeak that should be highlighted?

Is it just me, or does that statement make absolutely no sense at all?

user-pic

"I hope that he will learn that we will withdraw" is an important statement from McCain, don't you?

user-pic

"don't you" shoul be "don't you think?"

Sigh.

Talk about making absolutely no sense.

Do I understand this? "I hope that he will return and will learn that we will succeed when we withdraw with honor." WTF is this man babbling about? This is gibberish!

Oh, Oh, my mistake! He said "I hope that he will have learned that we will withdraw and we will withdraw with honor and we are succeeding so that we will be able to withdraw.” That clarifies everything.

user-pic

Ok, let me see if I get this. Obama wants to withdraw. The american people want to withdraw. The iraqis want us to withdraw. Now, mcbush wants us to withdraw. Can someone please explain WTF we are doing there then? Can't we all just sit down and put together a plan to withdraw, force it through congress and down the king's throat since mcbush is on board now? How many more americans and iraqis have to die? This is absurd.

Did anyone in the press corps point out this mistake? What consistently annoys me is the way the press only points out these mistakes later -- as if they had to go google the country to make sure they were right. Why can't the people at the presser directly ask McCain, "Excuse me, senator, did you really mean Czechoslovakia or did you mean to say the Czech Republic?"

You nailed it. They really actually don't know at the time for sure.

wow and obama has the problem with foreign policy

He must have been consulting with Condi "Soviet Union" Rice.

He meant to say Yugoslavia. He is looking forward to a visit with Tito.

user-pic

And next month? Lunch with Generalissimo Franco, who's still dead.

Around three months ago, McCain told Don Imus that he would "work closely with Czechoslovakia and Poland and other countries"

Give the guy a break. At least he knows Poland is a separate country. So his view of the world can't be any older than 1919 (unless it's so old it pre-dates the partitions).

I have to agree with Istanbul. We're so focused on the countries he doesn't know don't exist that we're failing to credit him for the ones he names that do. When will we see those stories, foul press?

We'll see how Obama does with place-naming when he voyages to the Old World.

You're right. We should certainly overlook this repeated error because, after all, he did not forget Poland.

mcsame thinks we need to establish strong relationships with nonexistent countries ???

so why descriminate

lets add Prussia, Siam, and Persia to the list

user-pic

Enough about Czecholovakia - what is McCain's policy regarding Rhodesia and Ceylon???

Well, McCain criticized Obama for spelling "flak jacket" "flack jacket" but according the military, both spellings are acceptable.

Obama should just bring it up during a debate....and have McCain answer about Czechoslovakia. Make him look like a moron on National TV.

Tensions are mounting between the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the Grand Duchy of Muscovy.

What say the Prussians on this matter?

Cold War Mindset.

But someone ask Vaclav Havel for comment. 'Cause I love that guy.

Quick. Somebody appease the old fart before he sends troops into the Sudetenland

Or starts selling massive quantities of cigarettes to them, to soften them up.

user-pic

McCain could learn about Czechoslovakia just by looking it up on Wikipedia or Google. Oh wait--never mind.

And this man is the ranking member of the Armed Services Committee? This national campaign has revealed that John McCain is not only inadequate to the job of president - he is also not up to the job of US senator. The librarian was right, McCain = Bush in so many ways. Another real embarrassment for the US in the eyes of the world community.

user-pic

The MSM will not look at McCain's repeated misstatements and confusion induced meltdowns with anything approaching evenhandedness unless Obama and his surrogates make more of an effort to foreground the issue.

The "Dr. Phil" crack was cute, but McCain's constant slips - count on seeing more of these - need to be a consistent leitmotif within the Obama campaign's general talking points if we're ever gonna get them to stick in people's minds.

That's NOT nitpicking. I've visited the Czech Republic and Slovak Republics and for three years I lived in neighboring Ukraine. The Czechs and Slovaks spent 50 years struggling under communist rule and fought hard politically to gain independence. The Czechs and Slovaks were able to separate peacefully, which is incredible.

The Czech Republic worked hard in the 90's earn membership into the European Union. And the Slovak Republic will join the EU next year. Bottom line: These countries and the people have overcome a lot to become two great emerging democracies in Europe. The least that idiot John McCain can do is acknowledge this.

Hey, if McFuddle says it's there, it's there. ;)

Right on. Do the Czech Republic or Slovak Republic or maps have John McCain's military service to refer to on this issue? I didn't think so.

"... Pittsburgh Steelers"

or the Green Bay Packers, depending on the audience.

user-pic

OMFG! Senator Wackadoo is the reincarnation of Rondog RE-again

I think McBrain should be dispatched posthaste to be the new ambassador to Upper Volta.

I've said this a hundred times before, McCain's brain lapses are due to his advancing age. You can't force a synapse to fire. He is mentally unfit for the position of President of the United States. period. With all the imbalances we are experiencing in the Financial markets, the last thing we need now is a Leader of the Western World with an incurable imbalance of his own.

Now, on to the Beer Queen-------

Alright people, this is a bit out there. How many of you refer to the country of the Commonwealth of Independent States as Russia? Russia is a country that ceased to exist when the Soviets took over. It became the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic, or USSR. Or how about Burma? Sorry kiddies that country now calls itself Myanmar(or spelled somewhat similar to that). The point is why bust his balls over calling a country what it used to be called, when you could be busting his balls for something that really matters. Such as his promises to continue the failed Bush policies, ensuring that more jobs go to Mexico, promising to extend American colonialism to Iran, and the list goes on.

So McCain is ranking on Fgn Svc C'tee? Czech Republic has been a NATO member for years now.

I feel for the old guy, but it does seem slightly peculiar.

Must be early signs of Alzheimer's. McCain has had several of these "confusions."

I am not trying to be disrespectful, but given how often he has done this, is it not fair to raise concern about Sen. McCain's mental faculty?

Beal, for the record, there has never been a country called "Confederation of Independent States." It is a loose, informal collection of sovereign countries that once made up the Soviet Union. Also, Russia did not cease to exist when the USSR was formed. It was known as the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. Also, note that none of the other 14 Republicans were "federative." They were simply "Social Republics."
