Lieberman On Britney Ad: "Just Relax And Enjoy It"
You knew this one was coming: Joe Lieberman is defending the Britney-Obama ad.
Lieberman took a different tack, saying the ad simply compares the two candidates in a "creative" way and people should lighten up. "To some extent the appearance of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears -- people complain about it -- they should just relax and enjoy it," he said. The idea is to draw people into the ad. The point of the ad is really quite strong: Who's ready to lead America?"
"Relax and enjoy" Britney and Paris? Hmmm. Wasn't there a time when Lieberman crusaded against the sort of crass celeb imagery that supposedly threatens our morals and culture? Thought I remembered something like that. Oh, well.

I'd say the guy who doesn't make childish ads like this one.

That particular phrase is generally only used in one particularly offensive context.
Regardless, Joe should know that the lie about an electricity tax in the ad suggests that the person doing the lying, John McCain, is NOT the one ready to lead America.
Someone should ask Joe:
1. Do you support an electricity tax?
2. When he answers no, then "You support some form of cap-and-trade. Is that an electricity tax?"
3. When he also answers no, "If that's not an electricity tax, then why does John McCain call it one in his latest ad? Is he lying?"
I'd like to see Joe try and square that circle.

It did contrast the candidates in a creative way. It was very creative to show Obama speaking before a crowd of two hundred thousand...the six people who show up for McCain's press conferences can then think about how pitiful their candidate actually is.

I think he meant people should "relax and enjoy" Paris and Britney within the context of the campaign ad. For example, "Haha, what a delightful comparison they're making between these drug-added starlets and Obama. I enjoy this advertisement so much I'll be mailing this stack of blank checks to McCain's office, post haste."
I don't get how everyone is supposed to just relax and enjoy a campaign advertisement as if it's some cartoon on YouTube. It's not some video made purely for entertainment; people are going to object to the political arguments voiced in it and that's what they're doing. Then again, if you've ever watched Lieberman speak for any extended period of time, it's pretty clear he never understand the meaning of the word "entertainment" to begin with.

Yes, and the remarks coming from Joe sweetie and McLamebrain are just more of the same. But if one puts up those ads, side by side, don't you see how totally lame brained the McCain ads are. They went for the ad that places a black man in the company of two young, celebrity, WHITE girls. It is not even artfully done. And it is certainly not subtle. It is another Non stated statement about a black man with not just one white girl but two. That ad in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and in pockets of most states is a subliminal message to whites that electing Obama will open the tidal waves of misogyny. It is totally as sick and coming from the "Senator who fathered a black child" crowd, it is so disgusting. I never want to even say the name McCain again and he certainly never gets my vote even for Senator again. He is beyond the pale and then this guy calls out Obama for introducing the race issue. McCain has lost his guts since he hides from criticism so easily. He has no shame either. Even so, I am not buying his silly defense nor his charge that Obama brought up race. How stupid can that statement be. Very is the word!!!!

people of my father's generation don't see the 'Celebrity' as the issue. . they see the gender of the celebrity FIRST and to them, McCain has just called Obama a girl. And that is one down and fighting words in that culture. the fact that they are celebrities is not the meta message to their target base.

If I were Paris Hilton or Britney Spears I would really think about suing for the unauthorized use of my image. Since it's not a commercial use, I am not sure that it would fly. For all I know McCain negotiated a payment with them for permission to use their images. But even though I usually find their antics disgusting and their fame totally (Paris) and mostly (Britney) undeserved, it irks me to see someone holding young women up to ridicule like this, especially with the not so subtle implications that they are stupid and sexually promiscuous. In Britney's case it is especially sad because she clearly has some mental health issues. It's intended to harm Obama, but it clearly never occurred to McCain that it is exploitive, cheap and just plain mean to use and abuse live people like this. And to boot, they are almost certainly Republicans (as one mag said, Paris looks like a junior Cindy McCain).

The ad features two "sexually available" (as the euphemism apparently goes) blond women in an ad with Obama, and now Lieberman says to relax and enjoy it -- the rape line?? This is about the most outrageously sexist and racist BS garbage to show up in the campaign so far.
It will be interesting to see how the media handles this. And whether the people who were up in arms about sexism against Clinton will respond to this.
This is really gutter politics, and Lieberman ought to be thrown under the bus by McCain, pronto. This is not even on the same scale with calling Hillary a "monster" or many of the other errors that have led to the departure of campaign surrogates and aides.

Obama has tumbled in the Gallup tracking poll from 49 to 45% in just a few days, and it's probably all because of this spate of negative advertising. The point of the Britney and Paris ad isn't just to caricature Obama as a vacuous celebrity; it's to insinuate that he is less than a real or complete man. We're back to James Carvell and his notorious remark that if Hillary gave Obama one of her balls, then they would both have two. The Obama campaign can't sit idly by while the McCain camp continues to feed these juicy scraps to the media dogs that greedily snatch them up. I'm thinking now of Olympia Dukakis speaking to her aged father-in-law in the movie Moonstruck: "Old man, if you give that dog any more of my food, I'm going to kick you until your dead." It's time to starting kicking the lying old fuck.

Ron Brownstein brought up an interesting point on Andrea Mitchell's show on MSNBC. Why did the McCain campaign pick two white women to compare Obama to? Remember that the guy who created the Ford ad (call me, Harold) in Tennessee is now with the McCain campaign. I missed hearing this, but apparently on the same show Rick Davis (McCain campaign) accused Obama of playing the race card. Johnathan Capeheart with the WaPo said that he thinks that will be the big story for the next 24 hours, or more. It will be interesting to see who else, if anybody, in the MSM picks up on these story lines.

Krusher, Joe Lieberman has been in NY Metro area politics to know this line is explosive. He used it anyway.
The press did not challenge Lieberman, so here goes.
Tex Antoine was a weatherman for WABC-TV7 (pre-disney ownership, same property) in 'the late 70's.' Even I remember the newscast that got him fired. He was a very popular weatherman at the time.
This from Everything2.com.... http://everything2.com/e2node/Tex%2520Antoine
"His weather spot came up just after a report of a violent rape case. Tex thereupon said about the last story, ``Confucius says, `If rape be inevitable, just lie back and enjoy it.' '' This so-called joke got him first suspended, and then fired. Supposedly some said he was a little drunk at the time. The incident was a major news story at the time"
So Lieverman was actually remixing Tex Antoine's rape 'joke.'
Does anyone from the media understand how serious an ethics violation Lieberman made just yet.
Has anyone asked Hadassah (his wife) how she feels about her husband joking about rape? I think we need her on the record about this. I take it very seriously. but no one in the media has the brains to do the same.

So, Joe, Hadassah should just relax and enjoy it when she's taking it in the ass from Karl Rove, too?
Maybe you'd have different thoughts if it was your own wife. Maybe not.
Either way, you're a putz.

"Relax and enjoy it?"
Is he talking about the campaign ad or the rape of the working class by the GOP?

Just. WOW.
Another bombastic blasphemy from Rape Gurney Joe: all classy, all the time.
What an utter piece of shit this douchebag is. Using dog-whistle, frat-boy "wink wink nudge nudge" language like this is beyond the pale, besides being hopelessly juvenile and incredibly - some might even say arrogantly - stupid. I wonder how women in his home state like that phraseology?

Puerile, adolescent scum, all of them. And this suckup is like the maladjusted creep who feels compelled to ass-kiss the class miscreants in the schoolyard, so as to guard against getting beaten up.
