GOP Rep. Musgrave Repeats China-Cuba Oil Myth

Well how about that. We now have a seventh Republican continuing to spread the myth that China is drilling for oil off American shores: Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, a Christian Right champion from Colorado, repeated the idea to the Fort Collins Coloradoan.

The Coloradoan immediately called Musgrave on it, causing her to then refer them to her staff. To his credit, her chief of staff told the paper that she misspoke -- which is more than we've personally seen from other Republicans we've encountered.

Musgrave faces a tough race against Betsy Markey, a former top aide to Democratic Sen. Ken Salazar.

So, will Musgrave no longer repeat the myth, assuming her chief of staff has informed her of the facts, or will we be hearing it from her again?

I appreciate you guys keeping track of this one. It's good to see someone out there keeping them honest.

Musgrave, I think, had a close election with a fairly "librul" opponent a couple of years ago. In about 2004 or so, I was in a meeting with a bunch of guys at one of the water conservancy groups in her district. Farmers and sons of farmers become engineers and water managers, not the type you'd expect to be flaming liberals by any stretch. I mentioned something about Musgrave and almost all of them rolled their eyes and had slightly pained looks as if I'd mentioned some major embarrassment. I think her one-issue schtick (getting the bible into government) is getting old with her constituents who realize there are practical problems to be solved and that gay marriage isn't one of them.

That's true. The district as a whole leans Republican, but Musgrave is surprisingly weak. CO-4 is ripe for the picking, and some of us are really hoping she continues to belabor these non-issues, which may rally support from a few quarters, but will annoy the hell out of virtually everyone else.

so let's see if I got this straight

candidate makes false claim

candidate refers reporters to "staff"

staff says candidate "misspoke"

any word from the candidate on this ???

who's gonna cast the fucking votes in congress, the candidate, or the staff ???

cuz the candidate has NO FOOKIN CLUE ...

Ok, off topic, but this is very disturbing. I think it would have been better for the country if there was more of this kind of press during the republican primary. WTF. It looks like this guy is a loose cannon. Check this out.

How to start a meme among stupid people who vote:

Tell a useful, self-serving lie that confirms their existing belief system.
Get other liars and numbskulls to repeat it.
Mumble something when caught by the liberal elite intellectuals in media that stupid people who vote don't read.
Wait a bit, then repeat the lie.
Find even dumber numbskulls to repeat it out in the sticks.

Wasn't Musgrave the one who ran her campaign out of her taxpayer-funded local congressional office until she got caught? Nice ethics.

Saying it three times will make it true.

I hate to see the word myth debased the way it is in the headline.

1 a: a usually traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon b: parable, allegory 2 a: a popular belief or tradition that has grown up around something or someone; especially : one embodying the ideals and institutions of a society or segment of society b: an unfounded or false notion 3: a person or thing having only an imaginary or unverifiable existence 4: the whole body of myths
