GOP Attacks Obama Over Disputed Quote

Not surprisingly, the Republican National Committee is now attacking Barack Obama over the Washington Post account of him supposedly hailing his own symbolic importance before a roomful of House Dems -- an account that's being disputed by multiple sources.

But here's what's funny: The RNC's attack consists of nothing more than a reproduction of the entire WaPo post, under the headline "Audacity Watch." In other words, the WaPo post is seen by the RNC as a perfect and complete attack in and of itself -- akin to an RNC press release.

I'm not kidding. Take a look.

Separately, it turns out that WaPo used this quote to hit Obama not once, but twice. WaPo's Dana Milbank has a "sketch" which is entirely devoted to tarring Obama as "presumptuous" (his word), a perfectly distilled GOP talking point. And it, too, is based partly on precisely the same quote, which came from an anonymous source.

That seem odd to anyone else?

It would seem odd to me, Greg, if I hadn't lived here during the last 8 years. Since I have, no it doesn't seem so fucking odd. They've been doing this for 8 years- the media just publishes whatever bullshit the RNC sends to them.

user-pic

Ok...you can claim that about the Washington Times and FNC (even if it isn't true) but the Post is almost as LeftLoving as The NY and LA Times.

..but SFCWallace, we both know that journalistic incompetence is bi-partisan.

user-pic

True...I'm just trying to point out that most of the MSN is and has been slanted left for years...this is the first election cycle that I've seen this level of complaint about the media from your side of the isle.

user-pic

Wow! I admire your consistency: You still have no idea what you're talking about!

user-pic

...and your disapproval removes any concern on my part that I may be slipping a little.

user-pic

Why don't you take your "MSM Liberal Conspiracy" nonsense back to Freeperville where it belongs. This is the first election cycle you seen of our criticism? So obviously you're not old enough to remember Kerry or Gore's election cycle.

user-pic

Dude, go back and look at the Kerry and Gore cycles...and Clinton and Clinton and Dukakis and Mondale and Carter and Carter (that's as far back as I can remember the tone of the news coverage) the MSM was firmly entrenched in y'alls corner.

user-pic

Oh yeah, so true. The MSM was so firmly in the bag for Dems that they never allowed the Swiftboaters to spread their lies by having them on all their shows repeatedly. Nor did they ever constantly repeat RNC talking points about how Gore "invented the internet", etc. And they didn't do any reporting at all on the Lewinsky affair. Yep, nothing but a bunch of liberal sock-puppets that MSM. *eyeroll*

user-pic

And look at this cycle, the MSM never once talked about the Reverend Wright, Ayers, "terrorist fist jabs", his being a "secret muslim", his "arrogance", etc. And all the while constantly grilling McCain about his numerous flip-flops and mistatement of facts. Why it almost criminal how much the MSM is trying to get Obama elected.

GOP troll.

"Liberal bias" my ass!

Thanks for the laugh.

You have no idea what you are talking about if you think media had a "liberal bias" in last couple(possibly more) of presidential elections.

Media is firmly incompetent and has had a right leaning bias(thats after you take out propaganda outlets such as Faux etc).

user-pic

O so true - yeah, the Dallas Morning New is soooooooooo liberal.

I mean the bias drips - right off their two editorial endorsements for George W. Fucking Commander CooCoo Bananas Bush.

You really are not equipped for this role you've decided you want to have, Wallace.

They earned it in 2003 and 2004. It's just that nobody could believe that our media could be so complacent that they'd essentially cheerlead a war and give credulity to liers and smearmongers in their attacks on a Presidential candidate and Vietnam veteran. At the time, Jon Stewart made a huge name for himself by taking on the media head on. Everyone else just kinda assumed that journalists would "wake up" and start reporting facts again at some point, not lies and spin just because it's easier to get.

That never happened. I guess 911 really did change everything.

You're misinformed: The Post isn't really left or right, it's simply the paper of the Washington's elite establishment. It's mission is simply self-preservation.

user-pic

correct. it's basically out of touch. which makes it look pretty conservative to me. though I'd suspect that helps make it look lefty to your average wingnuts.

I wish those making this claim would back it up, without leaving the Rightwing media machine, including the vast talk radio elements and direct mail, out of the response.

This is paranoia, pure and simple. The 'media' is not left or right: it is a mixed bag. It is, however, almost totally self-serving and profit-driven. Left or right.

The Washington Post and the New York Times being leftwing/left leaning is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO pre 9/11. Get with the program, pal. 9/11 happened on Repubicscum watch so clearly they, and ONLY THEY, can protect this nation. GOT IT? I SAID GOT IT?

Respectfully, because you seem to be more than just a loathed concern troll (you are reasonable so far), this is a case of who ya gonna believe, what the RNC/Milbank, et al, are spouting or yer own lying eyes reading the actual article?

In a further comment, you said this is the first election where you've seen the Democrats voice the complaint of media bias. Please, think about whole reality for a moment: This is the first election cycle where you say you have personally been exposed to the complaint of conservative media bias; this is because it's taken THIS LONG for the long-held and long-suffered complaint to reach through the major media blackout. It was building from well before 2004, continued after 2004, and finally, with the media-favored Republicans taking the whole country and half the world down the toilet with it, only now does reality start to set in a little - and STILL the truth about conservative media bias seems only to trickle through for somebody paying closer attention than most.

I do congratulate your for your being open enough to notice what's been going on for years. Next recommended step for you? Think for yourself! C'mon, you can do it.

The WaPo should just set up a FAX machine in Dana Mountebank's office with a direct line to the RNC; seriously, why bother with the pretense of letting this hack draw a salary?

user-pic

Who gives a crap if he's presumptuous or not? Could there be a more press-driven non-story than this?

user-pic

GWB AWOL in the Texas Air National Guard was...but y'all loved that one. Phoney documents and all!

user-pic

Forest for the trees. Everyone older than Gen X'ers knows why people joined the National Guard in the 60's, it was to get out of serving in Vietnam. We're all hoping and praying that Chickenhawk "sipping lattes in Paris during Nam" Romney gets the Veep nod.

user-pic

When did "sipping lattes in Paris during Nam" become a bad thing for you guys? That used to be an enterance requirement for the hard core left.

user-pic

Dude - you are an idiot.

Commander Coocoo Bananas was AWOL because he didn't want to take a physical. Gee I wonder why? How many jets did he crash while coked to the gills, one wonders. I've heard 2.

And then there was the DUI, out of 3 or 4 he got over the years...

user-pic

Tena, don't fall for SFC's bait. I'm sure he'd much rather rehash the 2004 election than talk about the content of this post.

user-pic

nope...just showing how "Right-wing" that media coverage has been "since the advent of the printing press."

user-pic

Hussein,

the Troll is back clammoring for attention. Ignore him and you starve him.

Aw, come on now, Tena, I'm not sure about that "idiot" label. But SFC does most definitely fall into that "some of the people all of the time" category that Abraham Lincoln spoke of.

That Dana Milbank piece is something else. There's no detail in it that is extraordinary for a Presidential nominee, but yet it's all treated as if it were. From the high level of security right down to planning the transition, it's all pretty typical stuff. This is the danger when the press loses perspective and anything past last week is washed down the memory hole.

Nice Warren Ellis avatar! I like!!

user-pic

Haven't you seen Spider here before? He's not here very often, I admit, but yeah - love that avatar.

and how the hell are the Filthy Assistants?

user-pic

I bet Obama would welcome the day when he only has one opponent. First, in the primaries, he had Hillary AND Bill.

Now, in the general, he has McCain AND the press. Sure would be nice if he had only one opponent at a time.

word.

We already knew the media would not be Obama's friend in this election.

The only reason they went on his Mideast trip was to catch him misspeaking in some way, and then blow it all out of proprtion to "prove" that he was too inexperienced to lead the country.

Even now, the media is on 24-hour Obama "gaffe" watch. McCain can say any stupid, misinformed or crazy thing he wants, and the media either doesn't report it or explains it away.

But God forbid Obama say anything that could be considered self promoting in the slightest, and the media will try to drum him out of the race because of it.

The double standard lives on, and Obama will be fighting the majority of the media as well as his Republican opponents for the rest of his life.

The Obama camp needs to respond quickly before this gets out of hand but in a way that is un-Republican.

Obama needs to point out how the Reps are just willing to go with inaccurate, unchecked information. After all, if the Reps are willing to draw conclusions on un-facts, how can you trust them with the country?

Nothing the Washington PoS does surprises me today.

Actually, that's not true. The fact that they actually called out McCain on his deceitful attack ad was a bit of a surprise to me.

user-pic

This is nothing more than the media doing their "uppity" bit on Obama. I saw this last night on Hardball where they repeatedly played a tape of Obama at a fundraiser stating that his "chances are good". This was, of course, immediately turned in to Obama being "arrogant".

"Audacity" is just the rethug codeword for "uppity".

user-pic

Another prediction: they keep this up and they are going to piss off African American voters worse than they already have.

If I can see that what this is really about is: "Obama is Uppity," then I'm sure others can see it.

Uppity if you do
Inexperienced if you don't

Forget the commander in chief test

What about the SMELL TEST?

user-pic

He passes that, Biden said he smelled nice a while ago.

This is what the GOP does, Lord knows they can't run on any issues because they simply do not line up with those of the American people this election year. Not one issue. So they attack, rub in the dirt, and use scare tactics. And it's not going to work this year for a change.

My gaydar says that Dana Milbank's just nasty ole queen who's been doin it too long.

Eh ya gotta take the bitter with the sweet...an acquired taste

user-pic

Don't know if Dana's gay, but he is a member, like both Presidents Bush, of Yale's Skull anmd Bones Society.

But, but what about the issues? I heard the Straight Talk Express himself say that this election would be about issues, not personal attacks. Boy, what a crappy MSM we have.

This whole presumptuous thing is Gore inventing the Internet all over again -- just making stuff up and watching the media lap it up.

It's time for a media critic to call out the media for doing Rove's bidding. This is exactly the seed the in-contempt one planted with his country club comment a few weeks back. Howard Kurtz, earn your pay! (I won't hold my breath.)

Fight back dammit! The GOP Sleaze Machine is winning the narrative war and Obama is doing nothing to combat it. It's infuriating.

user-pic

He is fighting back...he's sponsoring a bill in the Senate that would allow the Frenc and Germans to vote in this election...relax, the Messiah has everything under control.

user-pic

Link, please.

I see no evidence that these attacks have substantially hurt Obama among actual voters. McCain has had MSM and the punditocracy in his pocket for a long time, now.

Obama's message this week is about he economy. If the Obama campaign responded to every McCain ad that they put out, then thety will never get their economic message out there.

Aren't some of you guys the same people who said Obama needs to be hitting home his economic message more. Well that is what Obama is trying to do. While McCain is having to respond to the response to his own ads, the campaign can never talk about get it's message out.

If Obama stops to respond to every McCain ad, then doesn't he become McCain. That is how Obama truly beat Clinton early on, because the Obama campaign was good at staying on message. It was once the campaign go off message (neg ads, PA, Rev Wright) that time became dicey.

It's weird. The media started trying on the "arrogant" tag back during the primaries, and no one really paid attention to it. Then sometime this month, "arrogant" turned into "presumptuous," and they got away with it for a few days, and now they can't control themselves anymore. They're positively giddy. I honestly think they know what it's a code word for, and they can't believe that no one is calling them on it (until now, at least.)

user-pic

The back and forth on this is what amuses me. Joe Scarborough got in a feedback loop with himself this morning where he would mention what an awful statement it was... and then mention that it was essentially second-hand hearsay... and then mention how presumptuous it was... and then...

And of course last night, "Barnacle" got in a simlar loop with the "Our odds of winning are good" quote. Oh, that might seem arrogant to people... but what else should he say to fundraisers... oh, but it's so presumptuous... but it's actually true... oh, but what if the people don't like him saying these things...

The Republican will jump at anything to attack. The only problem i have with WaPo is that they provide ammunition for negative Ad.

I won't be surprise if John McCain's Ad features this headline.

When you have journalist like Ron Fournier saying Obama is arrogant. We should all know that the rest of DC press will follow suite?

user-pic

Fournier? A journalist? Please.

I agree with those who say this is just a one hundred percent media madeup story for the purpose of reminding the stinking and shrinking lot of racists out there that he's an uppity one.

Lots of these folks still buy newspapers after all. They don't know how to logon yet unless their wives (who are infinitely more patient and savvy than they are) help them out.

This is a tempest in a teapot and anyone who's not one of the aforementioned demographic isn't fooled or intrigued by this stuff. I personally think it backfires bigtime. We want to look up to a strong president with something beyond just a bit of swagger again.

But a little swagger is good. Just so one doesn't get too, you know, uppity.

This is not the first time Obama's been labeled presumptuous or arrogant. In the primaries, many Clinton supporters had these same feelings.

Team Obama was able to deflect the criticism at the time by playing the race card. "What, a Black man can't be confident?", "What, a Black man ACTING presidential? What you tryin' to say?" Essentially, Blackman this, Blackman that.

Playing on White guilt works like a charm with Democrats. Too bad the same strategy is entirely ineffective with Republicans.

I have question about your avatar, mainly because the comment you used in this section, does that character from boondocks represent your perspective?

Just more "red meat" tossed to the GOP and the NOIQ crowd (which is probably the same thing), etc. Hopefully the debates will really draw out the differences between these candidates and set the tone for the fall.

user-pic

You had to figure something like this would happen with Blue Dogs (i.e. Quisling Dems) in the room. Obama needs to keep in mind that a lot of the people allegedly on "his" side are working for the enemy.

"Presumptuous" is the new uppity.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/bob-cesca/the-barbeque-media-wants_b_114843.html
...
AP: "In a speech that risked being seen as presumptuous..."

TIME Magazine: "capable to become the Commander in Chief of a superpower -- without seeming presumptuous..."

The National Journal: "He is well aware voters here at home might see that as presumptuous..."

Washington Post: "Whether by the end of this week he will be seen as presumptuous or overly cocky..."

Chicago Tribune: "That means walking the fine line between looking presidential and appearing arrogant and presumptuous..."

Boston Globe: "plus the growing sense in some quarters that the presumptive Democratic nominee is getting a little presumptuous..."
...

I love how the reporters repeat campaign talking points as if "people are saying it". They use the passive voice with out attribution:

"risks being seen as presumptuous"
"appearing presumptuous"

by whom? to who? God????

I wish they would spell it out that they are talking about rightwing attacks dogs claiming it is presumptuous and MSM pundits/reporters echoing it.

Watch out for the sneaky, deceitful use of passive voice. IMHO reporters should quote real people or STFU. Anyone agree?

user-pic

Why don't we all write Dana Milbank and ask him if calling Obama uppity makes him a racist? Better yet, isn't he one of the MSNBC talking heads. Why doesn't KO ask him to his face?

Great minds...Thought the same thing while reading Ms. Milbank's piece. KO attacked that meme just last night

Let's see if I've got this right. First you attack the media for it's overly friendly reporting on your opponent, THEN you attack your opponent confident that the media will give your charges free coverage in the name of fairness and balance

I know I've seen this movie before? What's Howard Wolfson up2 these days

user-pic

Jonathan Capehart literally used "uppity" in reference to Obama this morning on MSNBC- video here.

Maybe it is time to start an anti-meme: Why doesn't McCain attack Obama's policies instead of just making stuff up?

Or Obama could say: "I'm skinny, but I'm not the straw man McCain is attacking."

The DC press elite's lockstep repetition of GOP narratives since Nixon's day has been as reliable as day and night. Dems are big faggy girly men, or manly girls who want to chop your Cheney off, or angry/lazy Negros, or troop-hatin', rootin-tootin' decadent rich flower children, or pointy-headed big faggy girly men who think they're so smart, etc., and Republicans are simple, manly men of virtue who will smack some sense into the Other or the terrsts or whatever and won't raise your taxes.

One obvious problem with this formulation, which I think most of America has finally cottoned to, is that manly men don't generally sit around crying that the big bad media is picking on them waaaaaaaah!

seems like obama has a traitor in his midst feeding the press with half-truths to damage his candidacy.

and seems like this arrogant/presumptuous theme is from the rove playbook. the best way to diffuse this is to go back to the issues; go to the heartland and shake hands and listen. people will respond to images of him talking with ordinary folks. the campaign can do minimum pushback so that morale among supporters will not dip. with enough morale, the supporters can fight the war with the principle of lex talionis (an eye for an eye).

Dana should call a spade a spade and use the word "uppity".

if the obama campaign has a tape of the quote then they should release it. maybe this will also teach them to tape everything obama says to prepare for attacks like this.
