Election Central Saturday Roundup
In London, Obama Defends Overseas Tour
Barack Obama is spending the day in London, where he took some tough questions from reporters about the validity of his overseas trip. "This was important for me not only to try to highlight or amplify how the international situation affects our economy back home," Obama said, "but also hopefully to give people at home, but also leaders abroad, some sense of where an Obama administration might take our foreign policy."
McCain: Obama's Tour Is Leaving Us All Out
John McCain is now attacking Barack Obama for traveling the world during the campaign, with the angle that Obama is ignoring the American people -- and John McCain. From McCain's weekly radio address: With all the breathless coverage from abroad, and with Senator Obama now addressing his speeches to 'the people of the world,' I'm starting to feel a little left out. Maybe you are, too."
Obama: McCain Has Travelled Abroad During Campaign, Too
Also during this his press conference in London, Barack Obama rebutted John McCain's charges that his overseas tour was some how inappropriate: "John McCain has visited every one of these countries post-primary that I have. He has given speeches in Canada, in Colombia, Mexico, he made visits. And so it doesn't strike me that we have done anything different than the McCain campaign has done which is to recognize that part of the job of the next president, commander in chief is to forge effective relationships with our allies."
Obama Caught On Tape Discussing Vacation Plans For August
Barack Obama apparently plans to take a week's vacation in August, having been caught on tape discussing it with UK Conservative Party leader David Cameron. "Do you have a break at all?" Cameron asked. Obama replied: "I have not. I am going to take a week in August."
Jack Reed Takes Self Out Of VP Consideration
Sen. Jack Reed, the Rhode Island Democrat and Democratic point man on foreign policy who is accompanying Barack Obama on his overseas trip, has taken himself out of consideration for the vice presidency. Reed told the Providence Journal that he would refuse the running-mate position if he were asked, "but I frankly I don't expect to be offered the position."
Wisconsin Dems Oust Pro-McCain Delegate
The Democratic Party of Wisconsin's administrative committee voted unanimously yesterday to disqualify Debra Bartoshevich, a pledged delegate for Hillary Clinton who has said she'll now be voting for John McCain. "I won't drink the Kool-Aid," Bartoshevich told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel.
GOP Rep. McHenry Digs Into His Own Pockets For Campaign
In a sign that he could be facing a tough race for what is usually a safe Republican seat, Congressman Patrick McHenry (R-NC) has loaned his campaign $175,000 for his race against Democratic nominee Daniel Johnson, a disabled Navy veteran. If not for the loan, McHenry would have been roughly tied with Johnson for cash on hand. (Via BlueNC.)

It's interesting because Obama himself admitted that the overseas trip might have negative repercussions here in the US.
“I am not sure that there is going to be some immediate political impact. I wouldn’t even be surprised if that in some polls that you saw a little bit of a dip as a consequence..."
The fact is, he felt the trip was important enough for him that it was worth the risk. Again, Obama doesn't take the "safe" route to get an immediate boost. He does what he feels is best and most beneficial in the long run.

Obama is just tamping down expectations.
As much as we think he deserves to open up a wide lead over McCain, I don't think it will happen, at least not in terms of polls. However, if nothing happens between now and November to inject some enthusiasm into would-be McCain voters a lot of them might sit out the election, resulting in Obama winning by a larger than predicted margin. That's my hope, at least.

Whomever wins in November is at most going to win by a 52-48 pop vote spread.

I don't really think my interpretation is necessarily incorrect, given his history. But you're probably right, too. Still, it's very smart of him to do so.
I don't know if he'll open up a wide lead. Honestly, I don't think it's that huge of a deal. I think that many polls are polling behind reality. What I mean by that is that I think Obama is further ahead than some polls make him out to be.
I do agree with Jonez, though. When it comes to the popular vote, the spread isn't going to be huge.

I'm curious: who's broadcasting these weekly "radio addresses" of John McCain? And, has Obama been offered an equivalent amount of time?
Seems like it's Mr. McCain who's acting "presumptuous" rather than Obama.
And that McCain "flip-flop" on Iraq is just priceless.

Nobody is broadcasting his "radio address". It's something he's posting on his site and calling it that. I guess "podcast" would be too cutting edge for the McCain camp. He just started it a couple of weeks ago.

Obama might take a week off in August?? Oh my God!!!
Why was he "caught on tape", like he isn't supposed to take a break? Doesn't McCain not campaign on weekends? Don't those weekends add up to much more than one week?
What the fuck.

So the trip was just perfect. He managed to win at every level:
Senator Obama has impressed all the leaders he met with, his foreign policies are well received. He brought a positive image of the US. No gaffes to be reported.
McBushSame has lost the national security debate, he has lost credibility, he has lost the debate on foreign affairs. The McBushsame gaffes are adding by the day...
Pretty good week for Senator Obama..

McCain went to Europe in March when the GOP primary was decided. He gave a speech in Canada, and was "just by chance" in Columbia when the hostages were freed.
McCain doesn't campaign on weekends and didn't nearly have as long or tough a primary as Obama did - both points Obama's Camp should readily point out. Obama virtually had to campaign and visit(save Alaska and Hawaii) every State during the Democratic primary season - how many States did McCain set foot in?
Taking one week off in August is equal to McCain taking weekends off for a month, so Obama has a few more week long vacations to go before McCain should even start talking (of course we all know such facts won't stop McCain).

I think Bush's "Drunk Uncle" performance at G8 partly contributed to the success. Obama had an even lower hurdle than usual to cross, and so I'm not the least bit surprised that other leaders came away from the meetings exuberant that Americans would even consider someone with class and intellect.
Also, why do this site's PUMA trolls not use alternate usernames? I thought that was standard practice for GOP trolls taking that particular route. For TPM's PUMAs, it's pretty easy to find their xenophobic, racist, and Bush-loving rants on other sites.

This is a good example of why Obama has been less accessible to the media now that he's dealing with the likes of Jake Tapper and Andrea Mitchell.
It's not that Obama's comments to Cameron were newsworthy, it's just that Tapper was so thrilled that they succeeded in invading Obama's privacy that he immediately went and published it on his blog and sold it as if it were a negative. If Tapper could bug God's phone, he would.

What the hell is "McCain's Weekly Radio Address"?
Who broadcasts it? Because if it's just some recording that he releases to the press it's not a radio address, it's a talking press release.
Does the McCain campaign buy time for this "radio address"? Isn't it really a podcast? If so, why do you treat it any differently then the many, many audio files that are released by the Obama campaign on their website? Because it gets released to your...inbox? It seems you are making the McCain camp look more presidential by parroting their "radio address" label. It's an MP3, not a "radio address".

People need to check out the jackass stupidity at
http://mccainnow.com/index.php
I came across the Web site by accident looking up someone's name, and it's just awful. It exists, I guess, for dumb postings about how Democrats are afraid, incredibly afraid, of Mike Huckabee, etc., etc., etc.
But let's not forget the incredibly awful graphic of McCain himself. They try to flatter him, but he still looks old and sickly and just weird. Then they surround him with an otherworldly glow. (Is he...Jesus??). And then they give him a backdrop of about a dozen shadowy outlined figures. I guess they're supposed to be McCain supporters rapturously listening to his wisdom at a speech, but they look like evil monsters (zombies? aliens?) in a 1960s horror film--"Children of the Damned," maybe.
Add to that the lame, dumb tagline "keep your faith, keep that courage" (thank you, e.e. cummings-mccain), and you have a many-carat gem of stupidity on so many levels.

There is a saying in the Budhist world:
The juice died but alas ain't the fruit.
It perfectly fits McLame. The age died, but alas ain't the sURGE. I firmly believe, no kidding, he is less concerned about "a winning strategy," and more frustrated he ain't the center of vanity focus of national cameras and international marvel. It ain't an accident he had an affair with a woman 35 years younger and married to a plasticity 20 years younger. He loves the superficiality of being a human being.
He is a man of vanity, lust and greed and while the age eroded, the sURG ain't.

Whatever meager allotment of virtue McCain might once have possessed has been replaced by naked ambition. When he accuses Obama of being willing to lose the war to win the election, it is because that is what HE would do. Indeed, McCain would sacrifice everything good and just in America to become president.
And now, having used the words "McCain" and "naked" in the same sentence, I fear I am running late for my electric shock therapy.

Too close. With that sort of spread, the GOP can diddle one or two states' computerized voting tallies and emerge with a "shocking unexpected squeaker" for McCain!
I expect to see the TV commercials morphing Obama into Satan - his face, with a reddish hue, mustache, and horns - before this campaign is over. Isn't that the whole setup of the "McCain is running for God" poster?

They released an ad saying Obama hasn't been to Iraq in...over the weekend when Obama is actually VISITING IRAQ. Then this radio address is released on the day when Obama is actually finished with his trip and his on his way back to America.
It really seems to me that someone in McLame's campaign is really not paying attention to ad cycling. Both of these "ads" have a 24 hr shefl life. Unless they "tweak" them later, they can't be used again.

What strikes me as typically duplicitous about McCain's insistence that Obama look at the past and acknowledge the success of The Surge, is the fact that he used to make such a point of telling people NOT to look back. I feel like he went on Meet the Press a dozen times, and when asked about the quagmire in Iraq kept repeating some version of this mantra: "What's past is past. We need to look forward." Now that he thinks he's got a winner, he can't take his eyes off the rearview. He keeps insisting that everyone else look at it, too. Careful, McWalkingCane, there's a pedestrian in the crosswalk!
