Election Central Morning Roundup

Obama In France Today
Barack Obama is headed to Paris today for the next leg of his overseas tour, which has focused on the idea that he can repair America's relationship with allies and forge an international consensus. Obama will be meeting with the country's conservative (and colorful) leader, President Nicolas Sarkozy.

McCain To Speak To GI Convention And The Dalai Lama
John McCain has an interesting day ahead of him, with a speech in the swing state of Colorado before the annual American GI Forum convention. He will then meet with the Dalai Lama, giving him a chance to both talk about the honor of military service and a yearning for peace in one day.

Merkel's Office Praises Obama's Speech
Barack Obama's speech yesterday in Berlin is being praised by the office of Germany's conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel. Spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said the speech "underlined the fact that the challenges of the 21st century can only be tackled together, only in international cooperation -- that corresponds with the German government's position."

WaPo: McCain Could Announce VP Pick Soon
The Washington Post reports that John McCain could make his running-mate selection very soon -- between Obama's return home on Sunday and before the Olympics begin on August 8. Anything outside that window, and he risks being overshadowed by other media events.

Dem Chances In House Get Even Better
CQ has changed their ratings on 14 House races, with only two rating changes in the GOP's direction and the other 12 in favor of the Democrats. Furthermore, the two ratings changes for the Republicans are in seats they already hold, with the magazine declaring them to be safer than before -- so the GOP hasn't really made any true headway.

Report: Clinton Donors Helping Obama, But Not Vice-Versa
The Los Angeles Times reports that big donors for Hillary Clinton have donated a total of over $2.5 million up through June to the Obama campaign and to the campaign's joint victory fund with the DNC. On the other hand, Obama donors have only given about $105,000 to help retire Hillary's campaign debts during that period.

McCain Camp Creates Its Own Social Network Site
The McCain campaign is playing catch-up with the Obama team, launching their own social networking site to help supporters find each other and organize events: McCain Nation. The Obama campaign used this idea from practically the very start of their campaign, allowing their grassroots organizers to better contact each other.

On Morning Joe, Andrea Mitchell reported that there's suspicions that the Pentagon colluded with McCain allies to cancel Obama's visit to wounded troops (the McCain campaign, along with Drudge, subsequently accused Obama of hating the troops, even though it was the Pentagon who told Obama they opposed the visit at the last minute). Any chance we could get video of the segment from Veracifier?

That seems plausible. Especially in light of Condi Rice's statement regarding embassy's offering assistance and the US Embassy in Berlin prohibiting workers from attending the rally (regardless of whether they were on duty/working that day).

Petty and pathetic.

The backlash is starting to begin, the morning papers all down-played the very eventful speech in Berlin yesterday, take a look:

http://strategy08.wordpress.com/2008/07/25/what-your-papers-decided-for-you-this-am/

ras did poll on speech and 55 percent thought it excellent or good.........http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2008_presidential_election/55_rate_obama_s_berlin_speech_good_or_excellent_46_think_europe_should_be_more_like_u_s

We should all go here and leave a comment. This reporter is a jerk and a whiner, and mentions Greg having the audacity to question his report about Obama for further clarification. What crap.

Here is the link, comments can be left easily.

Of course Sarkozy felt he had to point out that he never thought Clinton could have won the nomination (not helping, Nico . . . )

avatar

The only thing keeping McCain in this game and viable is the media. That's why he's inviting them down to Sedona this weekend. I think every reporter who is going should have to go on the record about it. Today.

Good suggestion. We absolutely should know what members the media are saying to John McCain in private.

Heh.  Sedona, AZ, in the middle of summer.  McSame sure knows how to make reporters sweat!

avatar

There is a major scandal brewing that may just become known as "Obamagate" if the mainstream media decides to follow it up. Read more. http://www.tagg-lines.com/2008/07/breakingpenatagon-used-for-dirty.html

If this is true why did Obama's people say it was their decision?

OMG! Another 'fer-inner' leader endorsing the Obama!

Golly! He should run for President of the World . . . Then the pResident of 'strangely homoerotically named guy, Serge' and the President of the World can cage-match for the ultimate prize of King o' America and the rest of the known Universe.

Also would like some more elaboration/reporting on McCain's jab at Obama for not visiting American wounded in Germany. The reasons against doing so as part and parcel of a campaign event are obvious -- we wouldn't want a candidate turning a meeting with troops in a military facility into a campaign rally, would we?

McCain's response was ridiculous and insulting, ditto for accusing Obama of wanting to lose the war while he's meeting with troops and commanders -- if that were so self-evident, you'd think Petraeus or someone would've been a little more critical during his trip, yes?

avatar

Unfortunately the media is preoccupied with wondering if Obama is being too presumptuous by meeting with foreign leaders, or cocky, or overly confident, or why he hasn't received a 30 point bounce, or why he wears Dockers, or why ....

You get the idea.

Nothing says he had to take Katie Brian and (theOtherGuy) with him. He could siply have visited them. No cameras, no press, as a Senator. Then he would've looked even better.

Like your old guy raoming around in flak (or is it flack ....fucking morons) jacket putting accompanying troops in danger just to show the sureg was working (which it is not) ?

And even a trip like that requires substantial preparation owing to Obama's Secret Service protection. You can't change the parameters of an Obama appearance overseas that severely without even a day's notice without putting security in jeopardy.

avatar

Look, this trip has been divided into sections paid by the Senate (us, the taxpayers) and sections paid by the Obama campaign. The European section was paid by the campaign--and that means the plane, etc. Even landing the plane would have bent the DOD rules.

This was a prudent decision. And if McCain is so damned good about visiting the troops, perhaps someone will explain to me why the mess at Walter Reed wasn't uncovered by his diligence? Perhaps we should all look into that.

yuck a social networking site about mccain is weird. i suspect a whole bunch of old people and lunatic fringe conspiracy theorist to be on that site

McCain made another! gaffe during the CBS interview that the media didnt pick up on
http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/07/24/another-mccain-gaffe-during-cbs-interview/

Yeah, it's really an event planning site, not a social-networking site, since it doesn't appear to have any, y'know, networking.

Republicans are inherently top-down controllers; they don't dare have a truly open grassroots site. It's anyone's guess whether they are just technically lame, or whether they realize that if they actually gave their base an open forum, it would quickly be filled with embarrassing racist diatribes.

avatar

After all of the handwring over Obama not getting a bump in the daily tracking polls, I wonder if anyone will report that he's now up by 5 in the Rasmussen Poll after being tied late last week....

I won't hold my breathe.

is that 5 point lead by ras the biggest obama ever recieved by them

avatar

No, but in the neighborhood. He was up 50-43 for a day or so.

"big donors for Hillary Clinton have donated a total of over $2.5 million up through June to the Obama campaign and to the campaign's joint victory fund with the DNC. On the other hand, Obama donors have only given about $105,000 to help retire Hillary's campaign debts during that period."

These things can't be compared. What sane person gives to a failed business venture that threw good money after bad even when it was obvious that the business was finished? It's just unreasonable to expect Obama donors (as though he controls them) to give to a dead venture when there is so much more positive that can be achieved with that hard-earned money (like giving to party structures, eating, paying for gas, etc.)

The Clintons are rich. They decided to gamble more money even after all hope was lost. They need to accept personal responsibility and stop putting their hands out when the party needs to use the money for productive purposes.

I know some will say this is a non-unifying message. I disagree. Those who want to be unified will recognize the practical truth of what I am saying and that the Clintons, in the spirit of the public servants they once were, should not be a financial drag on the immediate and future needs of the Party.

It isn't even necessary to go into that to see how silly this story is. I suspect if compared to most campaigns' fundraising for an active campaign vs. retiring debt afterwards, the so-called "Obama donors" are probably well ahead of the usual level. Pretending that they ought to be equal, as the article implies, is just silly, and bad journalism.

I can understand that most Obama supporters wouldn't want to help Hillary pay off her debt to Mark Penn.

Hillary supporters shouldn't want to pay him, either.

the two ratings changes for the Republicans are in seats they already hold, with the magazine declaring them to be safer than before

You may want to double check that one. The two races that shifted toward the Republicans according to CQ:

TX-22 (Lampson-D) from Lean Dem to No Clear Favorite
IL-11 (open-R) from Favor Dem to Lean Dem

A lot of head fakes going on with these VP announcements. Next week could be a big week. It seems like a good week for him to announce. McCain may want to step on the announcement by naming his own VP. Otherwise, the race may be getting away from him. McCain could also wait until right after the Olympics and before the DNC and perhaps stay in focus for the beginning of the DNC, which likely won't be all that well covered.

I don't understand why the DNC is always before the RNC. I'd schedule my convention for afterward, so that you have the last bounce going into the general election.

"Since 1936, the party not holding the White House has convened first"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._presidential_nominating_convention

Charismatic leader who promises change speaks in front of massive adoring crowd of Germans.

Sounds familiar.

As far as Clinton's debt, apparently Obama is not that persuasive, or maybe doesn't want to be.

avatar

Yep. Shades of JFK and Reagan.

You really are quite vile.

Yeah, the really bad thing about Hitler was that he was charismatic and gave speeches to adoring crowds. All that other stuff was just icing on the cake.

Too bad Europeans don't vote for the American president.

Obama needs to get back Stateside already. This gambit has been too long, especially during a unfortunately tight Presidential campaign. He has been virtually unable to hit back at McCain while abroad, so McCain has basically a free week from any challenges. He still has Paris today and then Britain tomorrow? Considering he left last Friday, this trip is going to push 10-days. Enough already, there is many problems Stateside that need proper attention and addressing. His Love-In is getting tiresome.

McCain is going to make his VP announcement right after Obama does, to limit any coverage or bump - of course in doing so he'll also limit his own coverage. I half believe that McCain's VP is going to depend on who Obama chooses. If he goes left with his pick to placate the netroots and activists who feel abandoned by Obama's move to the center then McCain will choose a centrist and try and stake claim to the center. However if Obama chooses Kaine and claims the center, McCain will choose a strong Republican and try to activate the GOP base and hope the Democratic left abandons Obama.

fogu: you must have watched john stewart last night. that was his line. not too funny.

Nope. But great minds think alike.

avatar

SFCWallace @1045,
Watch Andrea Mitchell's report about this. She clearly states that Obama had planned to "leave the press on the tarmac" and visit the wounded with no cameras, as he had done in Iraq. It was the military's decision to bar him in Germany.

Scott Harper IL-13 is at the top of CQ's list. Yeah baby! But they only say Harper's already out raised Biggert's last challenger. In fact he's already outraised the last four of her previous challengers combined and outraised her in the second quarter. There's still a hell of a lot do but we're meeting our goals and this race looks good.

If anybody wants to volunteer, sign up here.

Despite the megabucks, Obama continues to slowly sink. His speeches abroad show the same tendency toward generalities. He has a rock star draw, nothing to do with what we need as a president. His campaign people are using his "non-campaign" Berlin speech to hook people into donating. His plane sports his campaign slogan -- "Change we can believe in" -- in huge lettering. And some voters are beginning to say "presumptuous" instead of "presumptive."

The deal is is that he is a newcomer and needs to look presidential so voters can get comfortable with him potentially in that role and vote for him. It's a case of he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't with those who want to attack him either choosing one or the other depending on Obama's decisions.

When does John McCain ever get into the nuts and bolts of his policies on the campaign trail? Never. So why only hold it against Barack?

The specifics of Obama's proposed policies are available elsewhere, even the trolls know that. The funny things is, they probably don't like McCain either, it's just that attacking Democrats is their chosen lifestyle.

"Some voters" -- do they live next door to the "some Democrats" that wingnut radio talkers are always telling us about who disapprove of the same things the host does?

avatar

But it's not presumptuous to assume because a candidate was a POW for 5 years that he are qualified to be president.
McCain has NO new ideas. He thinks the military is the answer to everything. He's mistake-prone with no attention to detail. He's tired and "some people" are tired of him already.

avatar

Poor republican trolls, I have bad news to report. It is time to pack your bags, and join the McBushSame campaign, where you belong.

Senator Obama is impressive, and the world leaders are impressed by him. The latest one is Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president.

Senator Obama understands the importance of working with different nations to solve the world problems as well as the US problems.

I am pretty sure that next week, he will own the economic debate.
He actually hit McBushSame about the "patriotism" words...

Anything coming from McbusSame is gaffe after gaffe, which is not even reported by the American media...

At least European media have a better understanding and reporting the news...

avatar

I am surprised: no report from the press conference, no report on the latest polls...
What is going on?

avatar

Which raises the point: Instead of implicitly blaming Sen. Obama for Sen. Clinton's inability to attract donors to relieve her debt, why doesn't the media narrative simply state, "Hillary Clinton still unable to attract additional donations from her supporters who haven't maxxed out?" That seems to be a marginally more persuasive theme, that a Clinton can't attract Clinton donors to relieve debt than that a Clinton can't attract Obama donors to relieve debt.
