Election Central Morning Roundup

Obama: Dems Wouldn't Attack Spouses Like Fox Does With Michelle
In an interview with Glamour magazine, Barack Obama went after Fox News and other right-wing media outlets for attacks on Michelle Obama, saying they "went fairly deliberately at her in a pretty systematic way." Obama added that they "treated her as the candidate in a way that you just rarely see the Democrats try to do against Republicans."

The Obamas In Washington State
Barack Obama will be in Washington state today, an area that he is expected to win this fall. Also, Michelle Obama will be holding a fundraiser for Gov. Christine Gregoire, who is facing a close re-election fight this Fall.

McCain In Missouri Today
John McCain is in Kansas City, Missouri, today, seeking votes in a Democratic area within a pivotal swing state. Missouri has voted for the winner in every election but one over the last 100 years, and the recent polls have been mixed on who is ahead.

Obama Camp, DNC Set Up Funding Agreements With State Parties
The Obama campaign and the DNC have set up a joint fundraising program with 18 state parties -- the same 18 where his ads have been running thus far -- to funnel money specifically for those states for the presidential race as well as down-ticket contests. Take this as further evidence of the degree to which the Obama campaign is seeking to expand the map for this year, instead of letting the race come down to one or two swing states.

House Republicans Not Shelling Out Cash For McCain
The Hill reports this morning that John McCain has had a hard time raising money from House Republicans, with only 32 members donating any money from their own campaign or PAC coffers since McCain became the presumptive nominee. House Republicans say that the campaign hasn't put much effort into soliciting their money, even though there'd probably be plenty to spare from Congressmen holding safe seats.

Solis Doyle: Hillary Was Okay With Me Working For Obama
In an interview with the Associated Press, former Hillary Clinton campaign manager said she had "complicated emotions" about her move to the Obama camp -- and she made sure to check with Hillary in order to make sure her old boss was okay with it. "And she was," Solis Doyle said.

Poll: Americans Conflicted On Gay Marriage
A new Quinnipiac poll finds that only 36% of Americans support gay marriage, with 55% opposed. On the other hand, only 45% say they support a law in their state to ban it, with a 49% plurality opposed to such a law, and they also oppose a constitutional amendment to ban it by a 56%-38% margin.

Is Obama going abroad today? There are no reports of where he is today.

He's in Washington State today, as I understand it.

It's not listed on Time's The Page.

avatar

it is listed right here on today's election central morning roundup (this page), 2nd from the top.

re: Solis Doyle story: anyone else completely sick of the media coverage of the Clinton psycho-drama? It's like a train-wreck we can't turn away from.

http://strategy08.wordpress.com

Why did you bring up the train wreck, then. Do you like to rubber-neck?

Uh, the Solis story is listed in the round-up. That's what dansac was referring to.

avatar

he did say that we can't turn away. safe to say he was including himself.

I'm with you, das2003. It's not a story. We have a nominee.

Yes. I definitely am. Nothing but Clinton surrogate drama all day long on the news. Look at how they are going to milk the JJJ slurs. They are not going to release the entire tape, just leak out bits and pieces over time.

We will probably have more of it leaked in October just before the election.

I am tired of the racial polarization and the blatant McCain bias. No one covers his outright rude crude and lewd comments in the form of 'jokes' where he talks about an 'ape rape' at the height of date rape issues. No one talks about how he calls his wife a cunt. No one talks about he voted to rescind MLK day in AZ, just that he received a rousing ovation at the NAACP. No one talks about his intemperate remarks about women and birth control. The man and what little character he possesses is the antithesis of Presidential. He even jokes aboutkilling people with cigarettes..my GOD..are Americans really considering voting for him to be President? WTF

OTOH, they are out on the news this morning demeaning Obama's character. It is almost like statemanship, integrity and dignity are foreign to Americans that they no longer recognized how true leadership looks. That friggin Scarborough and Tiki Barber this morning had the nerve to say Obama couldn't take a joke, Barber even quoted Dowd (what a source!) saying he was 'stulfyting' because he is unflappable. WTF? Do these people expect it is that same personality crap all over again where they want to make one person the 'fun and likes to hang out and joke' and the other person is a 'stick in the mud jerk who can't take a joke' Never once mentioning that the 'jokes' he doesn't laugh at represent defamation of character. They omit how he goes on DeGenere's and dances or how he calls out Clinton as Annie Oakley or even does 'brush my shoulders off'...is the real point they refuse to accept that he jokes APPROPRIATELY!!! That he does not embarass himself or the nation with his humour and just one of the guys hangin out actions?!

I am so sick of this press tearing down and characterizing the Dem nominee at this point in the election...they have nothing of substance on Obama so they are going to caricature him as the worse person you would want to be with socially while making McCain into 'just a guys guy' and one who can 'take a joke'...even when McCains jokes typically have ethnics or women as the butt of the joke?!

That is just what the country has now in the White House with frat boy Bush..guess folks like Scarborough and Barber haven't had enough of that ribald potty humour so they wnat more of it with rebel McCain the complete military failure. When the military won't put you in positions of leadership despite you being a legacy of TWO admirals and a Navy Academy grad, I say that is enough proof that he is piss poor material for Commander in Chief and leader of anything let alone Leader of the Free World.

Give. Me. A. Break.

Yeah, that same Obama can't take a joke meme wass on TV yesterday too. I believe it was on DAvid Gregory's Race to the White House. I just wish that The Nation would run a really crude front cover about old Johnny and Cindy and se how they all react to it.

avatar

Yep, I saw that too...Rachel Maddow rebutted him, but no one else did. I just find all this incredible. Just like they turned Obama into a flipflopper on the Iraq issue when Obama never ever ever changed his position. The media simply said he did by repeating the McCain talking point. And now the talking point has moved to he is like Bush?
WTF?!

The press is treating this campaign like a fraternity hazing. Barack is the hapless pledge; McCain is an upperclassman.

its true what i have learned about democrats is that they arent interested in dirty politics, I wish they were though. Because republicans are tough and democrats should be tough with the republicans.

Awkward Exchange between McCain’s press aides and St. Louis Reporter

There's a difference between tough and dirty. There are many tactics Republicans employ because they care about winning power but not about havng support from the people for their policies once they've won. The country would not be better off if Democrats did the same.

It would be absolutely wonderful if Michelle Obama could get even 50% of what was thrown at Hilary Clinton during her husband's time in office. Nothing better than seeing a smirk wiped away.

good to see that your opposition to obama is personal and not actually based on issues. so you know: not something to brag about.

I often sit on the flag-draped porch of our spotless Colonial Revival McMansion, sipping a lemonade, or perhaps a sloe gin fizz, and reminiscing about the good old days of the 1990s. Those were simpler. more wholesome times; calling Hillary Clinton a radical commie lesbian murderess, accusing the Clintons of running over teenagers with trains a la Snidely Whiplash...good times, good times. Heck, Hillary wasn't even smart enough to have the help cut out a cookie recipe from a butterscotch chip bag to submit to Family Circle - she deserved whatever she got for not knowing her place like Pickles and C-Word do.

The Congressional REPs not shelling bucks to support Senator Wackadoo's Presidential 'cash-flushed-down-the-crapper' run makes sense when you consider that most of the Congressional Republicans will need all the cash they can find for their legal defense funds once the justice system gets up and running again.

Contrast and compare:

The Obama campaign and the DNC have set up a joint fundraising program ... to funnel money specifically for those states for the presidential race as well as down-ticket contests.
House Republicans Not Shelling Out Cash For McCain

The Hill reports this morning that John McCain has had a hard time raising money from House Republicans...

So Christina West let's get this straight. Republicans slandered Hillary in the 1990s so your answer to that is to vote for the Republican in 2008?

um, christina is a parodist.

We live in an age where political pornography is commonly accepted. The New Yorker cover isn't humor, it's political pornography.

Fox News taking cracks at Obama's spouse, is political pornography.

Hannity, O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Ingram, Coulter, Maulkin, they are all porn stars, political porn stars.

We need to call this for what it is: a form of pornography. People who embellish in this sort of thing should feel a sense of embarrasment for having done so.

Michelle Malkin's behavior is definitely more tasteless than any porno I've seen...

I've been very disappointed by the relative silence from second and third wave feminists on the subject of the MSM's mistreatment of Michelle Obama.

It is saddening that any woman could revel in the hope that another would endure mysogyny. People that do aren't feminists; they're haters.

I like how Obama compares Fox News on one side to "Democrats" on the other -- reinforcing the (correct) notion that they're an arm of the GOP, rather than a news outlet.
