Breaking: McCain Campaign "Concedes" That Obama Is Patriotic

This line from a top McCain adviser, in a Politico article on Obama's efforts to convince the electorate that he's American through and through, is unintentionally funny and revealing:

"We don't want to talk about his patriotism and character," said McCain adviser Charlie Black. "We concede that he's a patriot and person of good character. This is about big issues."

It kind of says it all that to this senior McCain campaign hand, acknowledging that Obama is patriotic is a concession.

"We concede"?

Damning by faint praise -

user-pic

Gee - so nice of him to grant us that concession. Who the f*&k made the GOP the patriotism police?

Oh yeah, the media.

I believe this was a slip up by Mcfuddle...what they are conceding is the election!

I concede that McCain is Panamanian.

I concede that Charlie Black is a preeminent douchebag.

Importantly, though, they did not concede that he was not a muslim or that he's not a scary black man.....

user-pic

"So far as they know..."

The word that should've been used was "acknowledge."

Soooo, great now he is a patriot because the GOP officially acknowledges such? Give, me. a. break.

I want to know what in the heck is going on with the media? Why are they insisting on twisting and spinning McCain's talking points to obscure the fact that Obama has been very consistent about what he is doing in Iraq?

It is one thing for McCain to try this spin, it is another whole ball of wax for the media to pick it up and run with it, when they have no darn words that even IMPLY such out of Obama's mouth!

Does the media not understand the terms strategy and tactic? Do they not get that the President sets the strategic mission for the troops? Have they all jsut lost their cognitive ability and can only parrot the McCain spin?

I find this to be riDICulous coverage of a non-statement.

Then I heard the analyst this morning say DESPITE, Obama's changing Iraq position the Gallup poll shows a 6 point GAP between him and MCain with Obama at 48% and McCain at 42% in the polls.

I was like WTF?....gap..Gap? GAP?....since when did a LEAD in the polls turn into a GAP.

The coverage is so biased against Obama it is absurd.

Shorter Charlie Black, "Our opposition research team hasn't been able to find any real skeletons in Obama's closet. We will run a nasty rumor campaign to take him down below the level of outright charges. We might even float the rumor that he has a white baby."

That's actually much longer.

user-pic

You are right.

He just "conceded" McCain's only shot at winning the election.

Concessions Day, is it? Concede the fookin earth is round, too, while you're at it.

user-pic

They'll never do that. Republicans don't believe the earth is round, or in evolution, or in global warming. They beleive that tax cuts pay for themselves and that killing embryos is aweful but killing full grown humans (especially if they are brown) is just fine.

user-pic

Shorter ronbyers, "It was a dark and stormy night."

The McCain camp's too busy trying to make Obama's and McCain's Iraq policy look identical to worry about their inability to make political hay of Obama's presumed lack of patriotism. The concession is all about the political tactic they chose to abandon. "We concede we're not getting anywhere with this dirty trick. We'll try another."

Greg Sargent overlooked the more important part of that sentence -- its construction. And he mischaracterized what was actually said. Read it again: "We concede that he's a patriot and person of good character."

Not only is he labelled a patriot, which is actually a larger compliment than just being "patriotic". We are all patriotic at some point -- but being a patriot is someone who actively does (or did) things to, for or in service of his country. That's Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, Nathan Hale, Paul Revere country. But Charlie Black (that Jesse Helms-lovin', Harvey Gantt-hatin' fella) goes on to say that Obama is "a person of good character." So no assaults on Obama's moral turpitude?

That was no simple "concession" on flag pins. Whether Charlie Black recognizes it or not, he just exposed the weakness of the Republican strategy against Obama. They are stymied when it comes to portraying Obama as "alien" to voters.

Sorry, Jade, but I disagree. McCain's campaign is, as I said, just giving up the ghost on an unsuccessful meme regarding Obama's patriotism. They are frankly acknowledging, rather than incidentally exposing, a tactical dead end and plan to move on to other nasty bits. Obama's camp should move on, too, and watch out.

I concede McCain ain't fully dead.

user-pic

But he is fully loaded. At least his depends are.

Screw McSame and the Repugnantan Noise Machine.

user-pic

The McCain campaign is going to have more opportunities to say "We concede." This is just them getting in some early practice.

user-pic

Let's not get too cocky. Don't forget the McCain camps secret weapon: they have the Joementum on their side. With Lieberman's help they could prove an unstoppable juggernaut.

PS - that was snark.

Good for Charlie, I hope we now have that little bit of business out of the way. I guess the flag pin must have done the trick. Now we all can move on to more important issues.

user-pic

Like discussing ad nauseum mcbush's vietnam experience and arguing about the number of days that he was imprisoned and tortured.

Someone who touts POW heroism as his political raison d'etre should never have "conceded" to the policies and tactics of fellow Republicans - themselves service evaders to a person - who started an unnecessary war under false pretenses. Finding such common cause amounts to having "conceded" any claim to patriotism on his own part...so who the hell is he to be the arbiter of anybody else's patriotism? Moreover, why the fuck are we even talking about this? Can we maybe graduate from high school to college?

I never could understand the stupidity of this "unpatriotic" thing.

My common sense says:
How could someone have even been elected and served as a State Senator and then have been elected to serve and continue to serve as a US Senator and be considered unpatriotic. By the nature of these "jobs" the person is being of service to the country and is patriotic. And don't their duties include at times leading the pledge of allegiance and other "patriotic" symbolic rituals? And don't US Senators have "security clearances" regarding national security that the rest of us don't. Hardly given to someone who is "unpatriotic."

This s a non issue. People are in financial trouble with high gas and food prices, mortgage foreclosures, job layoffs, and white people are concerned with whether or not obama is patriotic or not. this makes no sense! why is it een being questioned.

"We don't want to talk about his patriotism and character," said McCain adviser Charlie Black.

I remember W using the opening of his daddy's presidential library to blast Bill Clinton, seated with the other presidents, saying something to the effect of, "Character DOES matter." Papa Bush took Jr. to the woodshed for his impertinence after the guests had all gone home.

Anyway, the G.O.P. is perfectly willing to run on the issue of character when they think it works for them. The REAL concession here might be that they don't think McCain fares well in a character comparison.

I don't think this is one to just let alone and move on.

Perhaps I'm just too cynical, but I think that throughout the campaign we will see one McCain spokesperson saying nice things about Obama while some more distant but higher visability surrogate says something nasty and questionable. Black is just innoculating McCain against cricitism. Unfortunately, as monotonous as it's become, I think we've got to keep going back to McCain and Black over and over again to reject the unfounded attacks of his surrogates, and restate the statement just made. Just watch - we'll see an attack on Obama's patriotism sometime this week from one of McCain's henchmen.

Seriously! How does that guy still have a job?

Oh what a tangled web we weave, When first we practice to concede . . .

Remember the MO for the Republicans is not to engage in meaningful debate about real issues affecting ordinary americans. Theirs is to lie, confuse, attack without cause, shape-shift, morph, hiss and froth-at-the-mouth, if it so much as gives them a little airtime on TV to peddle their nonsense.Shamefully, the media and of course the right wind nutters give them the time of day. Sad,pathetic.

These guys are a joke. It is like they really do not know what they are doing or saying. The latest on the economy is that the victory in Irag and Afghansitan will lead to paying of the deficit. I mean come on.

The mcbush campaign is allegedly waiting to spring murphy on as campaign manager according to herr kristol. He only wishes. I have watched murphy giving opinions over the last year and two points struck me. One, I actually think he likes obama and he called obama as the nominee over a year ago. Two, he doesn't want to take over the wheel of the titanic as its going down. His career would be over and he's not stupid. Herr kristol can dream on. The guy is a complete moron, check out this silly article.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/07/opinion/07kristol.html

Herr Kristol also is pushing Sarah Palin for VP very hard. Bet McShame doesn't even know who she is. (Governor of Alaska)

user-pic

I heard that as well. I'm sure mcbush doesn't know who she is as well. I also think that mcbush will have a hard time picking a good vp nominee. Again, noone wants to jump on board the titanic who has a political future. Only fools like mitt the flip would jump on board.

I concede that McShame is a complete idiot.

We concede that he's a patriot and person of good character. This is about big issues

Typical liberal media taking things out of context.

Here's the full quote:

We concede that he's a patriot and person of good character. This is about big issues.

On the other hand, the 527s, the RNC and state parties...

WOW... To be an American... Am I American if I was born here? Does the fact of my birth in this country make me a patriot? What does patriotism have to do with being an American or running for POTUS, if the constitution doesn't require it? What makes me an American? What makes me a patriot? Do I have a choice of either or? Can I be an unpatriotic American or is that an oximoron? What would a debate about patriotism vs. American sound like in 1863? Or better yet, what about a debate in 1776?

Who were the real patriots in the revolutionary war (excluding the obvious British)? Who were the real patriots in the civil war? Or, were these people, Americans, with a difference in opinion and direction of the country?

What makes us patriots and what makes us Americans or would this be repetitious question?

Who can I talk to to make me a patriot because I have been waivering? Please bless me so I can be an American!!!!!

"I concede my defeat and congratulate President Barack Obama"
John McCain on November 4, 2008, after most media outlets project Obama's victory.

Right now he and his staff are rehearsing the imminent occurrence. Good job, guys.

I concede that Lieberman's finger smells like McCain's ass..

Dropping By,
There is only one entrance to be a patriot: be a POW in Vietnam, in a manner your enemy missile brings you down because you are an under-average, unadept pilot and you don't know how to use parachute so you break your leg and the enemy captures you on Oct. 26, 1967. And in the captivity, you monologue it, "I love America." Then, you will be conceded the certificate of patriotism.
Meaning there is only one Patriot in America right now until the day of the election, Nov. 4, 2008, and there cannot be two until that day.

Jade, please remember who we are talking about (Charlie Black). This is nothing but a faint. It won't be long before they hit Obama with a number of "White Hands" advertisements. Just like the Jesse Helms campaign ads against Harvey Gantt.

In the near future, this is going to get very ugly. Especially in the southern states that Obama is going to campaign hard in.

You think the campaign against Harold Ford in Tennessee was nasty? Just wait.

Before this is over, Willie Horton will be Obama's first cousin, Obama has a harrem at the Playboy mansion, and Mike Tyson is Obama's financial advisor.

We have to remind the public, and the media, that one of McCain's advisors is Harpo Marx (Joe Lieberman). Always blowing his horn, but never saying anything.

I agree. Actually, I think this "concession" was more about reminding people that there was a "question mark" (MSM 2008) in the first place.

Can someone recommend this man a good orthopodiatrist and a top-notch neuro-gastroenterologist so he can get his foot out of his mouth and remove his head from his @ss?

Keep talking Chuckie as every time you open your mouth more votes swing to Obama....
