Big News Orgs Start Declaring McCain's Troop Visit Attack False
Progress! Today's Washington Post comes through with a great front-page piece devoted entirely to debunking McCain's false attack on Obama's canceled troop visit. Here's a key excerpt from the piece, which is entitled, "McCain charge against Obama lacks evidence:
For four days, Sen. John McCain and his allies have accused Sen. Barack Obama of snubbing wounded soldiers by canceling a visit to a military hospital because he could not take reporters with him, despite no evidence that the charge is true...A reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding Obama's decision not to visit Landstuhl, based on firsthand reporting from the trip, shows that his campaign never contemplated taking the media with him.
There's a great detail in the piece, too: McCain spokesperson Tucker Bounds tells the WaPo reporters that "press reports" show that Obama canceled the trip because he couldn't bring the media. And then...
Asked repeatedly for the "reports," Bounds provided three examples, none of which alleged that Obama had wanted to take members of the media to the hospital.
The sweet sound of journalism, ladies and gents. Meanwhile, the lead editorial in today's New York Times calls the McCain version of events a "false account of what occurred."
As Atrios would say, Baby steps into the light...

Now there's the hit piece Washington Post article by Weisman to attack. He took the Obama quote completely out of context, truncated it, and then called him "presumptuous."

This one?
"This is the moment . . . that the world is waiting for," adding: "I have become a symbol of the possibility of America returning to our best traditions."
It does sound a little "presumptuous."

The Republicans know these are lies. They showed how the truth is irrelevant to them in the German troop visit story. As long as they can get hacks willing to promote their lies and smears (Milbank, Halperin and Scarborough), they will keep doing it.

Greg, it doesn't matter, the meme of the day is "hubris."
Watching Morning Joe this morning was incredible. Joe, who rode this troop-visiting story until it could be ridden no more, barely made a mention of the WaPo story.
But Obama being "arrogant" and "presumptuous," was worth hours of discussion.
I think if there were ever an example of the total emptiness of modern journalism, it's this "hubris" story. It isn't examining policy or describing how an Obama presidency will affect real people. It is something that literally will have no impact on our daily lives.
And yet, journalists are dedicated hours of coverage to this as a major determining factor in whether we should elect Obama. Sigh.
Thanks, just had to get that off my chest.

Finally some reporting by the WaPo. This is really getting beyond ridiculous. I thought the primaries were bad, but I suppose it was inevitable with two candidates identical on the issues. But now, we have two candidates who are world's apart on the issues, and all the media can talk about are the implications of Barack Obama's star power....The current headline on cnn.com/politics..."Election May be a Referendum on Obama".
Irritating, to say the least.
July 30, 2008 10:15 AM | Reply | Permalink
Sigh - the notion of election as referendum on Obama is incredibly frustrating. BOTH candidates deserve scrutiny.
This plays right into the hands of McCain, who wants to be seen as the "safe" choice. Well, if the campaign is referendum on Obama, and only one candidate gets scrutiny, the other is the safe choice.
Thanks press.

The McCain attack had the short term effect of changing the media narrative coming out of the Obama trip. So it was a short term win for McCain, but in the long term the media push back could prove far more damaging to McCain. If Old Straight Talk's reputation for telling the truth is destroyed Old Straight Talk will have to change his nickname.
The big media organizations made the mistake of not asking their reporters accompanying Obama if he ever had any plans to take them or their cameras to the hospital. If they had they would have known the truth before the lie propagated. Their willingness to take McCain at his word without fact checking proved a big embarrassment for all of them.

I am sorry to say that I think the McCain attack ad served its purpose regardless of the eventual counter-analyses in the highbrow press. This ad was intended to get a lot of play on cable news and turn around the perception of Obama and troops created earlier in the week. It worked at very low cost, and eventual pieces in the TIMES and POST explaining it is false may hurt McCain with higher educated voters but do not affect his gains with low-info types. Same with the headlines McCain created on his "oppostion to affirmative action."
As for Obama, he is not drawing policy contrasts with McCain to make McCain seem risky -- on Social Security, health care, etc. -- and he is losing valuable time to do so.

Theda...you are exactly right...the contrasts are stark and indeed scary! This is the direction the Obama campign needs to take. McFuddle is at his worst when he is expalining his positions and responding to Obama positions! I agree and let's hope this direction for the campaign begins sooner rather than later!

Theda, I think you underestimate the electorate. They are generally dumb, but not stupid. I think they are able to grasp a blatant falsehood, especially when it's being called out by a media friendly press corp. But, I do agree with you that
Obama is losing valuable time and not drawing policy contrasts with McCain, which should be a cake-walk!
July 30, 2008 10:32 AM | Reply | Permalink
The electorate is not stupid??? If 2004 didn't prove for all time that they indeed are stupid I don't know how it could ever be proved.
McCain's campaign is right on track at the moment. It will culminate in McCain becoming our next president if Obama continues to assume, as you do, that the electorate is not stupid.
Obama has to get on with campaigning against McCain, and do it very soon, or it will be too late. It isn't like it is difficult to work up an effective campaign against McCain. One could simply replay McCain's comments about almost any subject and that would be an effective attack on him. This election is as easy to win as the 2004 one was.

Traitor Joe wants you to believe McCain is brilliant and strategic, and Traitor Joe wants you to believe America is just as dumb as we were in 2004, but Traitor Joe thinks you guys are underestimating Obama. He will still win in a landslide and the MSM who predicted the Republicans would win the House and Senate in 2006 will report "no one could have seen this happening!" just like they did then.

I agree jchan. Sadly, I think when a story like this happens, the correction often gets over looked. Two days ago, I was radio channel surfing and came across some talk radio--of course this was what they were talking about. Do you think they're going to go out of their way to admit that they had been repeating false accusations? I don't think so.
Das2003, Last night on Hardball, a guest suggested that this hubris line in the media could have racial undertones. It's an interesting idea, and I'm not certain that it's entirely untrue. The basic idea is that while a white man is referred to as confident, a black man is called arrogant. I find it similar to the powerful woman, who is often called the worst of names when they are confident or aggressive, but those qualities are admired in a man in politics and business.

Hats off to Greg and TPM. You guys helped push this correction to the mainstream media, which are begrudgingly, belatedly correcting the record.

McCain and Co have finally found an attack that could stick, so expect them to run on it until November. They're going to paint Obama as an egoist out for personal glory and adoration - his penchant for big speeches (and the stadium acceptance speech) play to this meme. Take his positive (speech giving) and turn it into a negative - Classic Rove.
You have their storyline now - Obama First vs Country First. Get used to it because Obama hoped to ignore it and have it go away. However in that time it stuck and now it's part of the narrative he;s going to have to battle the rest of the campaign and every speech he gives will just be playing right into that narrative.
So much for bringing a gun to a knife fight. Maybe he's using a pop gun, you know those old timey toys with the cork in the end of the barrel, on a string. And McCain is using a samurai sword...

I agree with McCain that this campaign is about wisdom, Judgement and honor and clearly much of his campaign is based on little of these policies. From his endless switching of positions on Iraq, his self-procalimed "critic of Bush", to his endless pandering to the religious right and the environmentalist while his record shows a lack of enthusiasm for either, to his false ascertation that he does not like talking about his war record while talking about it all the time, to this latest blatant falsehood, McCain is losing all of his honor judgement and and wisdom for the reality that we as Americans face everyday!

Congratulations Greg and TPM for keeping this on the front burner and shaming the MSM into getting at the truth. It was such a dismal state on air, with almost every talking head repeating McCain's allegations. Let's hope the debunking gets widely aired soon, not just limited to the printing press. If we haven't kept up the pressure and raised a ruckus, here or out there in the MSM, the MSM will *again* hand this to McCain. Still don't know if the ads might have had an impact on voters, we'll soon find out. It's not only important that this gets debunked swiftly and decisively to correct the lies about Obama, hopefully, it'll teach McCain a lesson he will remember for the rest of this election. The outcome of this fight is therefore pivotal - Obama's campaign cannot sit back and take this on the chin, it'll only encourage them.

Let's not get all excited about the 'big media' suddenly developing concerns about being manipulated by the McCain campaign.
As of this writing, the web WaPo's front page features two Obama-related headlines. First, "McCain's Charge Lacks Evidence," -- not "is false".
Second, right beneath it, "President Obama Continues Tour," with a first sentence that repeats the McCain line virtually verbatim:

Why wouldn't Obama WANT to visit the troops? It'd be a major mistake NOT to UNLESS it could be seen a mere aggrandizement for his campaign. Which he thought it would be. Like kissing a baby. Except this baby belongs to the general's daughter. So he didn't.
If he had, he would have to have said at the outset that it was not it anyway to be construed with campaigning. But that would've been difficult because the whole European trip was paid for with campaign dollars.
So was he snookered? Well, kind of, but when you're playing with a man who wears Beelzebub's shoes, all bets are off.

The Obama campaign had multiple responses and excuses for this. I have only one question. It was on the schedule- why didn't Obama just go by himself- without his general/campaign aide?
You and the media may nit pick about whether this was technically a lie or just a misrepresentation. Most people just hear he didn't visit the troops.
Gee this reminds me of the accusations that Hillary was a racist when she said LBJ was instrumental in helping Martin Luther King achieve his goals. The Obama campaign was all over that and all the people heard was racist no matter what the explanations were. What goes around comes around.
And Josh is toatally off base with his idea that the Paris/Brittany/celebrity ad is ala Harold Ford. The point is that the most vacuous of the vacuous draws big crowds and media and it doesn't imbue them with substance. And Obama's 10 day visit to Europe and the middle east doesn't give him foreign policy experience.
