Alaska Dem's New Ad Takes Swipe At Ted Stevens

Check out the new ad from Alaska Democratic Senate candidate Mark Begich, who has managed to run about even in the polls against scandal-plagued Republican incumbent Ted Stevens in this deep-red state, where Democrats usually aren't competitive in Congressional races.

The ad accomplishes two main goals for the Alaska Dems: It introduces Begich to voters in a positive way -- and subtly reminds people of Stevens' personal scandals:

Begich says how he's made all his finances public, so the people can know what he's up to. "But it's not that way in Washington, DC," Begich says. "It's time to end the secret deals for special interests, and the special favors for elected officials."

I know zero about Alaskan politics. Here, in CT, I haven't seen any ads by David Cappiello, the challenger to incumbent Dem, Chris Murphy. My question is this: does advertising for political races normally start in July, in Alaska?

Important STAT call, all done for you, just go to link re: FISA, telecom immunity. Thank you.

I've never seen an Alaskan political ad before; does everything up there pronounce every vowel as though it were a short "i"?

There has never been an election year in Alaska like 2008.

Obama is in play, and coming to campaign in Alaska. McCain came in 4th, way behind Ron Paul, on the February 4 GOP Voter Preference event. The US House race has two very strong Democratic Party candidates battling each other, and Don Young is already in the fight of his life - in the GOP primary.

For Begich to be putting TV ads out this early, given that we are exactly seven weeks from the Alaska primary, is interesting. He's not in a close race in the primary, but his numbers stack up against Ted Stevens as very, very close. To combat Stevens' high profile, incumbency advantages and high level of funding, he's probably decided to start the Fall campaign now.

Jake Metcalfe, who was one of three candidates in the AK-AL Democratic Primary primary, but backed out last spring - ran some TV ads late last year, which was entirely unprecedented.

A breaking story is Stevens' incredibly lame performance at a press conference in Anchorage last week.

Also, research is beginning to uncover Stevens' key role, back in December, 2000, in the creation of the "Enron Loophole," which has - since around the time of Katrina, or earlier - added so much to the cost of fuel and heating oil. With people in the Alaska bush having to pay over $1,000 per month and up to heat their homes this coming winter - Stevens' role in these high prices may end up proving to be the critical issue in November.

do you have any links to the lame press conference story?

Is this assortment of tubes of the only way this commercial is being seen. Do most alaskans have access to these series of tubes?
