Gaffe-Prone GOP Congressman In Danger Of Primary Defeat Tonight
You might not have noticed this, but there is in fact a hotly-contested Congressional primary tonight in Utah. And here's why it matters: One of the most entertaining gaffe-machines in Congress, GOP Rep. Chris Cannon, could very well lose reelection after six terms.
Cannon has a history of making colorful comments, to say the least. For example, back in April he said that there are "lots of women who choose to be in polygamous relationships and who are very articulate about the benefits they get," and that it was a preferable arrangement to single parenthood.
And after the Foley scandal in 2006, he declared the teenage pages were "egging this guy on."
Although Cannon votes consistently with the GOP leadership -- he has a 96% lifetime score from the American Conservative Union -- he has faced criticism back home for being too much of a liberal on issues like immigration and spending.
Primary challenger Jason Chaffetz, a top political operative in the state, has his own issues, too. Cannon has gone after him as a career politico now running in someone else's district as an easier way to get into office -- Chaffetz actually lives in the district of Democratic Rep. Jim Matheson -- and Cannon thinks he can hammer this issue in a primary.
The latest poll from Utah pollster Dan Jones shows a narrow 44%-40% edge for Cannon, meaning this could go anywhere. Keep an eye on this one tonight -- the choice facing local voters is a right-wing buffoon versus a right-wing suit.
The polls close tonight at 10 ET.

I'm rooting for the buffoon to win by 2 votes to 1.
Let's see how low that turnout can go.

There's quite a bit more involved in Cannon's career than this post would indicate. Cannon has indeed been quite "liberal" on immigration, just as a long as you define "liberal" as "completely corrupt". I've been keeping track of him for a few years, and here's a roundup.
